Wow, I went here for the first time after placing an order online. Interior was nice and clean, plenty of seating. The service was 10/10, the owner Shantel was very warm, kind, and friendly. She double checked if I had everything and our short interaction left a good impression on me ^_^ We ordered the fried cat fish and chicken plates. Fried fish: 7/10 good. I will say the ends were quite hard but the fry was decent, some parts were flavorless but the middle was nice and plump. I should have asked for extra tartar sauce. My family has now ordered nearly everything on the menu, and every item has been fantastic. We reside in Monterey and frequently dine out. However, we had a planned visit to the Fairfield area for a staycation and, upon my dad's recommendation, decided to dine at Che'yla's in the Solana shopping center. The hostess greeted us warmly and promptly seated us. We waited for a few minutes, and another employee informed our waiter of our presence. Finally, he arrived, but there were no introductions. He asked us what we wanted to order, and we both opted for the chicken and fish combo. We chose the dark meat for the chicken and had three choices from fish, catfish, Boston (which I've never heard of), and the third choice escapes me. The server spoke so quickly that we didn't catch his words when he said "boss" for Boston and he didn't explain, and we didn't understand. We both ended up choosing catfish. We received our drinks, but that was the last time we saw our server. The food arrived beautifully presented, piping hot, and delicious. Another waitress kindly provided us with additional napkins, which was a nice touch. As mentioned earlier, the server never checked on us. So, I went to the counter to speak with management and request a to-go box. The manager, Bev, came over and listened to our experience. She was apologetic and promised to pass our feedback on to the restaurant owner. Prior to leaving we both ordered a slice of cake to go. We wanted to provide feedback while we were there instead of leaving a negative review online, as I'm an avid Yelp user. Additionally, we believe the server needs more training in customer service. We didn't want him to misinterpret our lack of a tip as us being cheap for no apparent reason. We've been to Che'yla's a few times now and easily a dozen times or more when it was Chez Soul. We're just happy that the family recipes we loved from Chez Soul continue forward bc this has long been one of our family's favorite local spots for Southern cooking. The fried catfish and fried chicken never disappoint and are always go to items for us. And that crawfish étouffée still has a strong hold on me. Them greens are always soft and tender, well seasoned with all that deliciousness you get from the smoked meat. I believe they use smoked turkey, but whatever they're doing, keep doing it. If you like fried okra, definitely place an order. And them candied yams got emphasis on candied bc they are in a different side-item class -- dessert posing as a side item? If you're a mac&cheese fan, all that cheesy goodness might make your inner child squeal. We literally watched that happen last night when a kid at the table next to us saw their mac & cheese arrive. Happy dance moment. And man, I do love me some hot peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Just don't come expecting some solid crust bc there isn't one. That would make it a pie. Although I would not object whatsoever if they decided to make a peach pie cosplay as a cobbler. But what really stood out during this visit wasn't all the deliciousness that graced our table. And let me tell you about Ivanna bc she deserves all the praise. She was warm, attentive, friendly and completely on her service game. My current obsession: Crawfish Ettouffee!! BUT it has to be from Che'yla!! I first had this from one of their pops-ups in American Canyon, so when I found out about their Fairfield Location, I HAD TO GO! Their space is HUGE! I believe it's the old Buffalo Wild Wings. Keep in mind that there is no entry to and from the Solano Mall... or Solano Town Center. So yeah, really big space and great for a celebration with a big party. Food was excellent! The Crawfish Ettouffee has soooo much flavor, it's mind blowing. They're pretty generous with the amount of Crawfish, too. We finally were able to try this spot since they opened. I got the Short ribs with rice and gravy with greens and side of cornbread. My wife got Basa pan fried with sweet potato and potato salad. My meal is okay but it needed more gravy. The short ribs was tender but it didn't rock the show. I'm not sure of preparation but I liked it to be smothered with gravy. My favorite item on the plate was the greens and cornbread. My wife's meal on the other hand was great. Went on father's day for lunch and had one of their daily specials! Pulled up & it was PACKED! I didn't make reservations so I expected to wait a bit. Nope, with some luck we were seated within 5 minutes. Service was superb. Daisha checked on us (party of 2) at the right moments keeping drunks filled at all times. Now the fried chicken = YES! However , you can ask to take whatever you need off of it. I was new , so I wasn't aware of that until after the fact. In my opinion, the oysters had a nice crisp to it. But we're extremely salty and being a person of color that's not good for the blood pressure we as people already struggle with. But the sandwich was tasty none the less. First off I want to acknowledge Sala's excellent customer service as soon as I called over the phone and placed the order she was more than helpful with her recommendations & customer service she was absolutely amazing and when we got there, she helped us as well and was so nice & extremely professional with her attentiveness . We both got the oxtail plates and he got the red beans and rice with the Mac and cheese and I got the candy yams with the Mac. Everything was so bomb, the mac & cheese was so cheesy when you lifted up you see that cheese pull SOOO satisfying, and delicious. Stop by for my second time with the wife and sister in law and friends to have lunch. The server was nice and engaged, but then after we placed our order she disappeared, literally. Never have us refills,I had to get them for our table, thank God I waited on tables in my early years. My wife said that the chicken was dry and salty. The cat fish was good though and the sweet potato fries were good and hot. I was disappointed with the service, I feel that when a business charges an automatic 20% service charge, they forget about the service and the proof was tonight. The server only came back to give us our bill. By the way other tables got their food before we did, there was 6 in total at out table. I'm keeping it real, in the restaurant business service and taste of food is everything. I wish them the best, probably will not return, definitively not my wife. Not worth the money. Ordered the oxtail plate (which comes with no rice) with red rice & beans + greens to go. The first thing I noticed was the gravy of the oxtails smelled burnt. When I tasted it there was a burnt bitterness to it on top of it being bland. They also did not trim the fat caps so the first bite I had was pure fat. The greens tasted like they were cooked in water and not broth. They had no flavor whatsoever. The red beans & rice was bland too. The cornbread was so oily I couldn't even finish it. For a plate that cost almost $40 & doesn't even come with rice, I was expecting so much better.
