I tell people my heart is in Italy for obvious reasons: the people, the place, the culture, the fashion, and, of course, the food. Ristorante Chez Black has to be mentioned alongside food. I had the seafood linguine and my date had some mixed seafood dish. Imagine my surprise when I got my bib! It definitely made my night. The flavors were phenomenal. Located right on the water, this place definitely has a tourist feeling. But in my opinion, Positano seems like a complete tourist trap, so I'll review this for just the restaurant itself. We stopped here twice on the trip (one lunch because it was pouring and needed a quick spot, and once at dinner which we had booked a reservation in advance). Great ambiance at Chez Black. It's sort of an outdoor restaurant with a large tent over it. Really refreshing and great people watching spot. I'll just list together the food we ordered at lunch and dinner. For starters we tried prosciutto mozzarella (duh) and the octopus carpaccio. We really enjoyed the octopus. I haven't seen many times where it was served as a carpaccio. For entrees I had the Margherita pizza and the sea urchin pasta. Pizza was good but the highlight was the sea urchin. Not only was it delicious, the presentation was one of a kind. I must have seen 7 of these trays during the dinner, so it's a popular expensive entree for sure. For dessert, we tried a combo of two of my favorite things. Pistachio profiteroles. Wow. Very disappointing. You'd think that for it being the "best" restaurant on the coast with those prices you'd be served some decent food. Our lasagna's whole top layer was burnt and stiff. The shrimp and calamari were very small and they didn't even give us a good amount . The pasta was very bland. A very traditional restaurant located steps away from the sand. It was so nice to spend some time on the beach then come to Chez Black for a very good meal. The interior is very pleasantly set up and there is plenty of space for parties of all sizes. It has an open air dining room which was nice considering the beauty of the area around you. The service was great and true to European style. They will not rush you out and they will not hover over you your entire meal. The food itself was pretty delicious. You're going to pay a little more due to this not only being great food, but a great experience with great views of the coast. This area has a special wine called Lacryma Christi ("tears of Christ") that you must try and is available at this restaurant. Go for the yummy pasta, go for the unforgettable experience, go for a glass of wine, whatever you do, just go! read more

Maybe I came on a bad day because the service was horrible. We were seated, order taken, order brought. They brought us bread in a basket and we had to ask for olive oil and vinger. The waiter never came back. We had the seafood spaghetti which was too salty, but because we didn't have a waiter couldnt complain. We flagged down a random waiter and asked him for our check. We chose Chez Black after tons of recommendations. It is definitely geared toward people coming in for a quick Positano visit but not AS tourist-y as you'd think. After walking the BUSY streets of Positano, a friend recommended this memorable place. We were immediately seated and began our first Italian feast on vacation. I love this spot for the mermaid themed and heart shaped pizzas, aka count me in. It's right on the main beach where the ferry's come and go so it's a little touristy but it's all worth it. It's also a great place to watch people right on the beach. Its right on the beach, great view of the ocean and mountainside, lively with other tourist, and occasionally live music will pass by. (They came around with hats bugging us for money. If you want to pass by, playing music, and a diner wants to give money thats one thing. But to come around bugging us for money while eating. Ugh how rude!) We thought service was slow, made us wear bibs, and pricey for what it was. We ordered the octopus carpaccio, black ink pasta with cuttlefish, and homemade pasta with seafood. We also ordered a bottle of wine. The octopus carpaccio was decent, nothing to rave about. It was missing something. Maybe a little more acid. It was just ok. I've had better. My black ink spaghetti wasn't homemade pasta which was a little disappointing but I still wanted to try it. (Based off of rave reviews). It actually did have good flavor but again nothing to rave about. I've had better at an italian reataurant in DC! The homemade pasta with seafood was just ok too. It's right on the beach. Unagi pasta was served in a black/purple unagi shaped pot!! Best clams of the trip. Fresh, flavorful and just delicious. Wish they gave us a little bit more... Our travel agency recommended this place and we thought we gave it a try. The location is probably the only best thing about this place and the lady at reservation desk. Worst meal I ever had in Italy along with worst service we got. It felt like very commercialized, not the feel of family own restaurant at all. We got bread but no olive oil and balsamic, we waited for a while and waited someone to come at our table to kindly ask (one man came to jus light the candle only) and all the response I got was "ask your waiter" very rudely. Same to other guy who came to our next table to clean our dishes. We never saw our waiter once he got our order, he never came back. My husband asked for another drink, we waited and waited (he finished his dinner and waited more) and another glass of wine never got to our table and we got charged for it. Pasta was not home made, overcooked and very salty. All waiter was rude for no reason. They don't even look at you. They are chatting around (my husband understands Italian) but never wanted to help you at all. I do not recommend this place. For the food and service we got, price was very high. You can go to Don Giovanni and get 5 star service, the view and amazing food for almost the same price read more

Food was way below average for the price. We had lasagna, which tasted like it was from a can of Chef Boyardee, and the Ravioli Capri was not a whole lot better. Also had a watered-down Cuba Lebre' and a glass of water. Bill was 83 euros. The place was crowded, and we got a table right away, but then we waited 25 minutes for a waiter to give us any type of service. As we were walking around Pasitano this place took our attention with the nice decor and we were able to get a table for 7 within 5minutes - i would recommend making reservation for parties 4 or more. The lobster pasta was amazing! Steak was not good at all, no flavor! They do not have any steak sauce whatsoever! We asked for a garlic butter sauce to suffice but waiter forgot about it and by the time we were able to ask for it, my friend was over it. Uni pasta was ok but I've had better in the states. We also got the mixed grill- a combo of grilled shrimp, squid and fish, yummy! Mussel appetizers were delish. Spaghetti and meatballs was good too, meatballs cooked well. Bloody Mary's were bad. This restaurant is pretty busy so we were lucky to have gotten a walk-in table of 4. Service could be lots better. Our server didn't seem to care to smile or be personable at all! Pretty lame since everywhere else in Italy the waitstaff was super friendly. I was told by the waiter that the linguine with crab was the best thing. So, I changed my order. The crab had next to no meat, and the little meat there was it was super mushy. The worst meal I had in all of Italy. When I told the waiter, 1/2 way through he shrugged and said, that's how it is. I asked, did you tell the manager so he comes over and says, "I lived in LA, that's how it is". I didn't under stand that at all, I re explained the crab was clearly over cooked and mushy and he shrugged and walked away. Don't recommend this place, go to Buca di Bacco. I came here for a late lunch while on a tour of the Amalfi coast - it was recommended by our Walks of Italy tour guide - prices are in range for a place on the beach but not all that bad and service is fast and they are versed fairly well in English (though they don't have to be but it is nice) - they have everything Italian - from pizza in a wood burning oven (thicker than in Rome) to regular traditional pasta dishes to past with seafood and all sorts of fresh seafood dishes. I had baby octopus in a thick tomato reduction and fried zucchini slides with mint and vinegar - loved the Octopus and the veggie dish was just okay. Otthers in my group had past with meatballs and pasta with fish. We did try some shots of the local Limoncello at the end of the meal and it is great, though not too different from what I make at home back in Arizona but still, a nice experience. Oh, I also had a small bottle of wine made from graps on the Amalfi coast - the small bottle is about 10 Euro and it is about 2 to 3 glasses of wine - I found it to be lovely and wish I had bought a bottle to take home - as it is branded as Chez Black wine I think you can only get it there. All in all, good food, service was friendly, and they are right off the beach on the Amalfi coast so what is not to love. :-) read more

RACIST RESTAURANT - DO NOT VISIT IF YOU ARE NOT WHITE We visited here on our trip to Positano. We came here during the Christmas season, so nothing much else was open around. When we went in to ask for a table and the staff was extremely rude and borderline racists. We just stood in the middle of the restaurant while the hosts and servers walked around us without responding to us. When we stopped a waiter and asked him for a table, he told us the restaurant was closed and would open later. That was strange as THEY WERE SERVING OTHER PEOPLE SEATED IN THE RESTAURANT. Would NOT recommend this place to anyone even if it was the only place open around. I don't think the place deserves even 1 star as they don't know how to talk to people of color. read more

Chez Black sits on prime real estate in Positano, near the main pier. The restaurant offers plenty of seating with a nice view of the water. We went there for lunch on our first day in Positano because of its convenient location. The food and service were decent, but I don't think it's a place I'd revisit. read more

Contrary to other reviews -- THIS IS NOT A TOURIST TRAP!!! This is our 2nd trip to Italy but our first in Positano. Hubby and I are foodies so we do extensive research where we are going to spend our euros and while we read some foodie trip blogs about Chez Black, one couldn't help wonder at first glance if it might be a tourist trap because of its ocean front location and lots of tourists (esp Americans) dining here. We gave it a try and we enjoyed our meal so much, we had to return for my birthday dinner! The seafood is abundant and fresh and their portions are generous! The service is top notch as they always made us feel like VIPs! Our favorite server was Pepe and Frederico, and Rafael serenaded me with a birthday song opera-style! Their delizie al limone (sponge cakes filled with lemon cream which you can find everywhere in the Amalfi region) was the best I've ever had -- you must have one here! (you're welcome!) For the two meals, we had the pasta with cuttlefish ink, mussels with cherry tomatoes and garlic, marinated anchovies, spaghetti scampi e frutti de mari (pasta with seafood - they put an adorable bow-tie bib on you because of the delicious mess you'll make), baked whole seabream fish wtih potatoes and tomatoes (served and filetted table side). We actually wanted to order more both times but Pepe graciously told us to decide after we've eaten if we should order more because he expertly knew that we had ordered enough. Our eyes are usually bigger than our stomachs. :) If I have one constructive feedback is that they don't have enough olive oil and balsamic vinegar bottles for every table. However, we noticed this in most restaurants in Italy. Unlike in the US, each table gets a set per table. We enjoy drizzling olive oil in pretty much everything, and the hubby can't have his panne (bread) without olive oil & balsamic vinegar. In any event, we got our oil & vinegar every time we asked for it and even requested they leave it at our table for the duration of our meal and they gladly obliged. Trust me, it is NOT a tourist trap -- this place will more than satisfy your palate and the ambiance and people watching is wonderful! read more

Amazing service and staff! Such a friendly ambiance also beautifully decorated. My friend and I came here on both nights during our stay in Positano (confession: partly it was because I developed a crush on host/ owner? ;P ) but also because we had such a great dinner experience our first night. The food was delicious and the staff was so attentive and friendly, our waiter Antonio was super nice! Really appreciated his service. Food: Portions are very generous so just make sure you order accordingly Throughout the the two nights we ordered the tomatoes and mozzarella as our appetizer cuz I mean c'mon your in Italy so of course.. We tried the burrata on the first night as well very refreshing Dinner entrees we tried were the spaghetti and meatballs and grilled mixed vegetables. (FYI the grilled mixed veggies is a small plate) however both tasted great. Second night I had the special pasta w/ cod (very good). My favorite part however was of course the dessert ..the server will bring you a cart of like 6 different cake options and asks you how big or small of a piece you want! The first night we tried the chocolate covered profiteroles (so good it was like eating profiteroles in a dark chocolate pudding!) Second night we tried the tiramisu- my favorite I've tried so far. Overall this place is very nice if your visiting Positano. You won't be disappointed. Tourist trap is right. Chez Black was probably the worst meal of our trip in Italy. After a very, very tiring 36-hour of traveling, Chez Black was our first stop in Positano. We were practically starving, and the location seemed cute -- right on the main beach! But the service was sporadic, and when the food arrived, it wasn't very good. I'd read they had gluten free options, but when we were seated, I was told they could only do some of the meats -- no pizza or pasta. Kind of a bummer, but I happily ordered the filet mignon. But what arrived was more like a very, very sad-looking piece of chuck skirt steak, and it was so incredibly over-cooked. I couldn't cut it or chew it, and my mom's side of broccoli rabe was super slimy tasting. We were both glad that we'd ordered the caprese salad to start, but even that was a bit of a miss -- more than half of the tomatoes weren't ripe! I really appreciated that our waiter took the steak off our final bill after he noticed I wasn't eating it. But we still spent over an hour and a half here with crazy slow service and pretty gross food, and I really wish we'd gone somewhere else. The location is the only thing good about this place! I couldn't tell you how the food is, we were never given a chance to order any. My wife and I came in, ordered a glass of champagne and coffee. About 20 minutes later, our drinks came out. An hr later I had to waive our waiter down and ask for our bill. Other people around us were seated and served, yet we sat for about an hr without even a hello. This place may have great food, the prices that I saw looked reasonable for the location and the food... I couldn't comment because we never had our order taken. Stumbled across this place on our day trip from Rome and completely regretted it. The server was nice enough, but the whole reason we were there was the view and supposedly good food. I ordered the "white fish" which was a terrible choice. Over priced, greasy, incredibly thin and small, it was full of bones and it was quite fishy - almost like it was about to spoil and they cooked it anyway. It was served with a lemon, but the lemon had no juice left and very much needed seasoning. Cost about €25 and was maybe worth €5 at best. We also ordered fried calamari and shrimp and it was also quite disappointing. The shrimp were very small considering they were whole shrimp (heads and all) and surprisingly had very little flavor - cooked too long maybe? The calamari were a bit soggy and had no flavor...salt couldn't even save these. We also ordered a salad, which was the saving grace of the meal so we didn't have to eat elsewhere. It was fresh, seasoned well and the balsamic was quite nice and light. The view was non-existent considering there are a ton of tables stacked in a small space. We sat about 6 inches from each neighbor and had no space for our legs considering the table was tiny and I'm quite tall. Save yourself 100€ (what we paid) and eat at another place with a view...plenty of them! read more

Beachside dining. In Positano! Yes, you are probably paying for part of that with your meal so you should probably dine during the lunch or early evening hours to get the most of it. That being said, the food here is still pretty good but still a little pricey and too heavy-handed on the seasoning with the pasta dishes. Aside from our pasta dishes we ordered the buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes as our starter. It was excellent, especially with the superb olive oil and balsalmic they provided. Our mains were the squid ink pasta with cuttlefish and the seafood pasta (you have to do some seafood pastas when you are on the shore of the bountiful Mediterranean Sea). The first few bites were quite good and they are pretty generous with the amount of seafood in each dish, but it was really over-seasoned to the point that it made it a little hard for the both of us to finish our plates. Luckily our house white wine helped cut into the saltiness. Service was friendly and attentive for the most part. Come early, like noonish (that's early for Italian lunch), to have a nice, comfortable area to enjoy without a crowd around you. read more
