Great quality food and fresh ingredients on the main beach in Positano. Yes it's a little overpriced and yes lots of tourists but tourists are everywhere in Positano. We went there once for dinner and once for lunch. Both times amazing service and food with Peppe our main server. Great atmosphere, very clean and great people watching. Pizza is the best one on the coast, we have tried several in Positano. Pasta, especially Chez lobster specials are out of this world. Make sure you get home Made pasta. Their baked white fish with potatoes was good too but something you can make yourself at home.. and the gnocchi, well let's just say it tasted microwaved. When I kindly asked the waiter if I could switch out the gnocchi for something else, he went nuts and started yelling in italian. I ordered the rocket salad and the arugula leaves had holes all over them. Back home I have arugula salads 2-3x a week and I have never seen such a thing.. I was convinced that the waiter got pissed and asked the kitchen to serve me their arugula from last week.. I researched arugula with small holes all over it and learned that the holes come from flea beetles feeding on plant foliage and spreading disease. That was the end of our dinner. read more

This restaurant was recommended by a friend who heard it was great. To ensure a table, we made reservations for two. It is located right by the beach and close to the Positano ferry. There were many pictures of celebrities who enjoyed a meal here and it must be the place to be seen and we had very high hopes for an amazing dinner. We started off with sharing an Insalata Misto and fried calamari which was very good. My friend ordered the special pasta with lemon sauce and I ordered the pizza with tuna and capers. The pasta tasted like pasta with some olive oil; we could not taste any lemon. It was like just eating plain pasta; the restaurant was kind to replace this dish with spaghetti and meatballs; this dish was also disappointing because the meatballs were dry. Overall this dish was nothing special. My pizza with tuna was ok; soggy in the middle. Not much tuna or capers on it, but was ok. This is our personal experience and perhaps the restaurant had an off night. We did not have any alcohol and our beverage was sparking water. Our bill came out to over 100 Euros. We were rather disappointed in the quality of the food for the price paid. read more

My friends and I visited Positano during off-peak season. This meant that most of the restaurants in the area were closed. Unfortunately, Chez Black was one of the few that were open. One of my friends cannot have gluten and we were disappointed to find out that they do not have any gluten free pasta options. We each ordered our own entree and shared a grilled mozzarella in lemon leaves. I got the spaghetti with wild clams and my friends ordered the seafood spaghetti, baked white fish with potatoes, and the pasta special of the day. The best thing was probably the seafood spaghetti, but even then, it wasn't amazing. The grilled mozzarella was basically warm rubbery cheese. The lemon leaf added nothing. It just sounded cool. The worst thing about the meal was that our friend who ordered the pasta special ended up with a huge bite of sand in his last bite. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner and when we stated that we were staying at Villa Boheme we were given first class treatment! (BTW the owner of Chez Black is also the designer of Villa Boheme). We started off with cocktails and a marvelous Ravello wine, appetizers of delicious fresh marinated anchovies, yum, sweet tasty clams and mussels, yum, grilled fresh calamari, and fresh oysters. Restaurant right on the beach in Positano so definitely prime real estate for the view of the sea and the mountain side village. I had specifically bookmarked this place for their sea urchin spaghetti and so we came early and made a reservation for dinner. They get pretty busy so I'd recommend doing the same. We saw a few groups having to wait for a table and they were definitely at full capacity during prime dinner time. We ended up ordering the sea urchin spaghetti - which came in little sea urchin domes which made it a lot of fun to receive. We became a sort of spectacle. The spaghetti itself was cooked to perfection and the sea urchin flavor made it buttery and delicious! It is the dish to get when you come here! They're also famous for their fish soup and it was HUGE! Literally can probably feed like 3-4 people instead of the 2 they say it's for! Clams, mussels, Calamari, fish galore! Very nice broth as well. I think I prefer the sea urchin spaghetti over the two dishes though. The dessert came in a mountain of displays. I thought it was just ok. Good place for live music - some guys came by to try and sell their CDs and people watch and eat. We stayed for quite a bit with a bottle of wine and just relaxed. Cons: The servers always seemed in a rush and didn't seem to care about the questions we had regarding the menu. We found this restaurant on the beach, so we decided to try it. It's a little on the expensive side, but it's so worth it! The service is great, the vibe of the restaurant is so inviting, and most importantly, the food is amazing!! I ordered the steak and it was one of the best steaks I've ever had. Part of the reason Chez Black is so busy is because of its location. You won't find a better spot to dine in terms of view in Positano. This restaurant is right on the beach. You could literally walk to the beach from where my friend and I sat when we came here in April. The food is decent here. Their desserts are quite phenomenal but their pasta and fish were pretty standard for the area. The service was very much like everywhere else in Italy where you're taking your time for each and every meal. My friend and I came here for dinner and ended up trying quite a few delicious items like the heart-shaped pizza and coffeecello (a spin on limoncello but coffee flavored!). I enjoyed learning more about the history of this spot and it seems like it is a favorite of celebrities. We tried out the sister piano bar down the street afterwards which was really gorgeous as well. read more

Wouldn't call this place a "hidden gem" as others have claimed bc it's right along the waterfront on the main beach of positano rather than hidden in the thousands of stairways. Also wouldn't call this a tourist trap. Yes, everyone here speaks English well and the food here is expensive. However, the food is worth the money and I do not say this lightly Ordered the sea urchin spaghetti which comes piping hot and plated in a sea urchin sphere! They tied an obligatory bib around me (no words were exchanged lol). It looks average but the taste is extraordinary! Its perfectly flavorful. Even the tomato skins in the dish were the damn best tomato skins ive ever had. Used the (free) bread to wipe every bit of the oily sea urchin sauce from my bowl. It's a generous serving! Definitely can be a good lunch for 2 people. Even the last bites of the dish while I was full were as great as the first few bites - a rare foodie experience! As great as the food was the cute old man wheeling around a cart of desserts. He's the happiest man and full of jokes. Got a free lemon granita/slush for dessert! Absolutely loved the tartness and considered ordering a real portion/coming back for it... Note that there's a 3 euro table charge and they still expect you to tip. They didn't let me add tip to the credit card charge Would come back and would recommend enthusiastically. Chez Black is located in the most convenient spot if you're spending the day by the ocean in Positano. The restaurant is very cute inside and also overlooks the ocean! Unfortunately, I thought it was pretty touristy when I went (pre Covid-19). The food was very good, definitely much better than the touristy spots in Rome. I think my favorite part was being in a great location. The service was good as the staff was attentive. Some items on the menu were just better than others. read more

I've been visiting Positano for 40 years and have been to Chex Black 25 times. I am sad to say they have just gotten sooooo lazy with their cuisine it breaks my heart. Flavorless pizza dough, tastes like canned tomato sauce, just a shame. Also had the lemon pasta which was served 40 seconds after we ordered. Of course it was premade and tasted as such. I mean that's the ONE thing you can't screw up in Positano - lemon pasta. Fried calamari came straight from red lobster - not the delicate hand battered calamari you can buy virtually anywhere. The owner wanders around our front flirting for most of the day. Perhaps he should flirt in the kitchen. Try Tre Sorelle instead. It's exactly what you hope for. read more

Great location, lovely and trendy spot. We were walking around on Sunday night exhausted after a full day with two small children starving. The place is right off the main beach, near where all the boats coming in. We had no reservation, but the manager was nice enough to take us in, despite the restaurant were fully booked. There were no kids menu ( same as everywhere in Positano) but they were happy to whipped up plain pasta plate with butter for my 4 years old. We were greeted by the waiter right away. Got our drinks and ordered within 10 minutes. Obviously the place is very well run. Food was good and generous portion too. Could have split pasta plate with husband. While we having dinner, there's a local Italian live band playing in front of the restaurant. Everyone starting to clap and sing. What a great atmosphere! I would recommend this place for everyone. I was also impressed with a cute dessert display in the corner. We love it so much that we went back the next night. Again we didn't make a reservation and was turn down. Without question, the best meal, service and experience while in a Positano. Loved the wine, pasta and they have do many to choose from. We ordered different so we could share and try new items. As did the couples to our left and right. I think we all had different items from the menu and everyone loved it all. My friends liked this place so much they kept asking to go back and if they had had their way they probably would have eaten every meal here. But hey! It's Italy and there are plenty of places to try so we limited our visits to only three! The pizza was delicious. And the pizza maker was so sweet, he even made us a complimentary pizza in the shape of a heart! (guess it pays to be 4 women alone) Our server was so sweet, we asked for him each time we went in and he took great care of us. As for what to order, the pizza with the spicy pepperoni was a winner as was the lobster spaghetti. While they have an extensive wine list- the servers are also quite informed and can find you a great bottle for a reasonable price. The manager (owner?) was on site and stopped us on the way out to point out a couple of other places that we should check out which was really thoughtful. When we first arrived at the restaurant, they gave us great seats, front row & having a great beach view. We ordered exactly what the waiter recommended, a seafood appetizer dish with an assorted mix but it was mushy & slimy. We also order tomato and mozzarella as a second appetizer, the tomatoes & mozzarella were huge chunks and needed to be cut up to a normal size. For dinner, we ordered the waiter's recommendation: Mussels and spaghetti, and my husband ordered the pasta ravioli special. Again, both we nothing special. Service wasn't great. You might look at Chez Black and think "this is a tourist trap" because it's nestled right in with all the restaurants that kind of are tourist traps. And while Chez Black does cater to tourists (like us) it has some really really incredible food. We ordered the lobster spaghetti dish (the house favorite one, not the one ordered by lobster weight). It was INCREDIBLE. Just completely fantastic. I recommend it for anyone wanting seafood in a beach location. We also got the calamari, which didn't disappoint. To finish it off we had lemon cake, which was fantastic too. The restaurant was packed full with tourists from all over the globe. But it just didn't feel like a trap. And the service was *pretty* good. Nothing to swoon over, but quicker than a lot of places in Italy. We will definitely come back just for the lobster pasta! read more

We came to Chez as per our friends recommendation while in Positano. At first to be seated the waitress told us there would be quite a long wait but then this older gentleman which I assume is the owner and manager seated us ASAP right in front with a beautiful view ( I want to assume that it's because we're cute but who knows?). So beautiful views of the water and port, it is very touristy in this area but then again I feel like this about all of Positano. We ordered Aperol spritzers because that's what you do when in you're a tourist in Italy. For food, I wasn't super hungry so we shared Caprese with the best cheese and heirloom tomatoes ever and I followed that with more Aperol Spritzers and calamari , they were the hugest calamari rings that I've ever eaten and were super fresh. No gumminess if that's even a word, and it was grilled not breaded. The place itself is really cute, and has mermaids on the columns throughout the restaurant. The bathrooms were pristine and pretty, very bathroom selfie worthy. I would return and recommend it even though it's a little bit on the pricier side in comparison to the other restaurants nearby. read more

They need to go back to their non commercial roots. The service was slow- not laid back in an Italian way, but simply negligent. They sat us and kept forgetting about us. The food was mediocre. Incredible restaurant!! We were in Positano for 2 nights and ate there 3 times! We really should have eaten there for our last meal as well because the other restaurant did not compare. The Lobster Spaghetti was delicious, the actual pasta was a amazing! Heart shaped pizza for an Instagram lovers dream and the Ravioli was so simple yet one of the best meals I've ever had! True pillowy perfection! Still dreaming of this meal days later and wanting it for every meal! The service is a little slow but I understand being that the restaurant is the place to be and always packed. Make a reservation in advance unless you're okay eating at 7pm. The restaurant gets really busy at about 8:30 with live music walking by, the owner and his son at the first table enjoying their meal and greeting every guest. I wouldnt come back here if you paid me. I requested some grated Parmesan cheese because my Uni pasta was bland at best. I then got a lecture by the seemingly aggravated waiter that they don't do that here but then he proceeded to come around the table and put an excessive amount of cheese on my pasta. I literally had to grab his hand and tell him to "freaking" stop. Ive eaten uni pasta in some of the best italian and japanese restaurants innthe world and this was definitely the worst...thus the need for the grated parmesan cheese. I tasted a bunch of my friends dishes as we went with a large party and it was all just straight down the middle average. "Che Black should rename itself "Che tourist" or "Che mediocrity". The single worst experience I've ever had. Service was terrible. We had a reservation for 21,00 we sat down at 21,45. A server came and took our order 30 minutes later. Food came an hour after that after we had already finished our wine. No apologies. Food was fine but not good enough to overcome the horrific service. One of the must visits when you are in Positano. It is right on the main beach and you can't miss it with its iconic blue and white striped awning. They took our temperature before entering the restaurant and seated us quickly. I always recommend trying to order in Italian but from the people inside you could tell it was more touristy of a place so all the staff speaks English. The food and drinks were very tasty but a bit on the pricey side. We went for lunch so we were able to get away with not ordering the antipasta and dessert but you could easily spend 100€ here for a dinner for two. They also give complementary bread and oil which was a nice touch. We had left our umbrella behind under the table when we left but when we returned the waiter promptly got it for us which was nice to know they kept it, overall great service and great food I definitely recommend. read more
