Came down from NoVa to celebrate a friend's birthday and we had reservations during restaurant week. I am always skeptical about French food but I was really pleased. ATMOSPHERE: Very classy! I love it. I've been in Richmond since 2005 and I have never been to such a classy restaurant that was so close to the campus. I love the decor. Who ever designed this place is a pure genius. It's hidden gems like these that make me miss being in Richmond. SERVICE: The waiters are soooo adorable. We were all talking about how cute they were lol. However, it's the service that we must judge. We had one waiter taking our orders and another who was going around filling water and lighting candles (we were here for a long time so it got dark). They are very polite, attentive, and chatty. I think our waiter knew he was getting a good tip from us for being such a doll. However, I have a whole other attitude when it comes to the host (some older gentleman with glasses who was seating people) - although I never had to interact with the fellow he was making it very obvious that he needed us to leave. He was giving us the stink eye every time he walked by and it looked as if when he was telling the next party that was waiting (I'm assuming for our table?) that we were just sitting around talking but he made hand gestures about it that was openly rude. I obviously couldn't help but think he was talking about our table because I have to admit were were definitely there for at least 2.75 hours so I made a comment to everyone. I didn't really appreciate him for doing that though. Maybe next time tell everyone making reservations they have a 2.5 hour max to stay in the restaurant because of restaurant week - I think that's very fair. Just for that I would rather give them 3 stars for this review but I feel bad doing that just because of one bad seed. FOOD: 3 courses for ~$25. Wine is extra. First three are things I ordered. The rest are things I tried from my friends. Forgive me for not including the entire names of the dishes. Wine - We got 2 bottles of Riesling for our table. Normally I don't like sweet wines but this Riesling was perfection because it didn't taste like sugar water. If you decide to go, ask the waiter for the Riesling that comes in the blue bottle that starts with a G. Spinach Bisque- I thought it was really good. Very creamy and savory. Cod- Really good! Comes out in this shrimp broth with a bed of edamame and corn. The cod was pan seared to a crisp on both sides and was also very savory. Tasted really good with the broth. Chocolate Mousse: Ehhhhh. I wasn't a fan. I think it needed a tad bit more sugar because it tasted like I was eating a huge mound of nothing. I had three small bites and let my friend finish the rest. Pork loin - I don't have any dietary restrictions but I personally don't like pork- for some reason the thought of it coming from a pig grosses me out. However, I have been thinking about cooking it lately because I know it's a really healthy protein so I gave this a try from my friend's plate. It has a tough texture and it was really difficult to cut - I didn't really enjoy it. BUT the barley that it came with was AMAZING. It's tossed in some broth or sauce and sort of made like a risotto. I could have had a bowl of that. Arugula risotto - ehhh...it was whatever. The parmesan cracker film was a nice though. Mahi-Mahi - I'm an idiot because I didn't try the actual fish and I just wanted to try to okra that it comes out with - it was very tasty! Almond cake - This was yummy. I didn't love the texture though because it was kind of hard. It was more like a cookie. Lemon Butter Cake - 5 STARRRRRSS!!!!!! OMG!!! This was amazing. Okay, so it's really misleading to call it a butter cake. It sounds like a fluffy, moist, buttery cake, right? WRONG - it's actually a kick ass cheese cake. It's 10x better than a cheese cake though because it doesn't have that overbearing cheesiness I'm assuming because of the butter they add. Very lemony and very refreshing. I was really surprised with my French experience because I had this idea that French food wouldn't be able to meet the expectations of my very heavy palate. I definitely recommend coming here and I would love to come back (especially for the Cod and the Lemon Butter Cake) read more

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here last weekend and couldn't have asked for a better date. Chez Foushee is upscale without being stuffy and their staff is superb. We were greeted warmly at the door by the bartender. Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive without coming across as fake and over the top. He asked us if we were in a hurry and when we said no, he spaced out the meal so that we could enjoy each course and take our sweet old time. The standout dish was the roasted brussel sprout salad with blue cheese and bacon. Yum. Get this if you go. You will not be disappointed. We also had mussels served in a delicious tomato broth. I had the soft shell crabs for dinner and they were excellent. The only reason I'm not giving this place five stars is that my husband asked that his steak be cooked medium rare and it came out well done. That shouldn't happen at a place of this caliber. We can overlook that, however, when everything else was top notch. read more

When I heard about a French restaurant that served lunch entrees for around 12 dollars, I jumped for joy. I really like French food (despite the best wishes of my franco-hater father), but I don't get to eat it too often because of the prohibitive price tag usually attached. I ordered a flounder dish, served with a fennel sauce and a spinach rice for a side. My date ordered the maple brined pork chop served with garlic mashed potatoes. Both meals came with a small salad. The salad was of mixed greens and had a light dressing. The small amount of light dressing worked to highlight the the flavorful greens. I would have preferred a bit more acidity in the dressing, but the peppery greens were fresh and satisfying. My main course came next and was pretty impressive. The fish looked perfectly cooked and the rice was presented in a cone shape that was pleasing to the eye. My date's pork chop had lovely grill marks on it with a healthy dollop of potatoes. As I had guessed, my fish was perfectly cooked. The sauce, however, left something to be desired. French cooks pride themselves on the quality of their sauces and I expect deliciousness on every occasion. The sauce was served over a fish with very subtle flavors, and so I'm sure the chef's intent was to not mask the flavor of the flounder with a delicate fennel sauce. I concentrated real hard on that sauce, and I think it could be called a fennel infused oil rather than a great sauce. There was very little fennel flavor and not too much flavor overall. The rice, on the other hand, was delicious, and I would like to learn to imitate it. I was lucky enough to get to try my date's meal as well. I'm usually timid to order grilled pork at restaurants because they often overcook the stuff, making a dry chop. This chop, however, was grilled perfectly. The meat was succulent and rich. The sauce was a well-balanced--rich, salty and deep. To end the meal, we ordered some chocolate lava cake to split. It was served with a small amount of whipped cream. There are two strategies one could take with lava cake: smooth and soft throughout, or crunchy edged. At Chez Foushee, they went with the latter. I enjoyed the cake very much and the fresh whipped cream was light and delicious, although there wasn't enough of it. At French restaurants, I usually leave hungry, but accept this fact because the food is so flavorful. This place had small portions, like most French places, but I would have liked bolder flavors. Hey, maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. At the end of the day, my judgement comes from whether or not I'd eat there again for the price, and the answer is probably no. read more

A long time lunch favorite of mine, we were downtown last night looking for a place to eat and pulled on Chez Foushee's locked door about 25 minutes prior to their open. We decided to stop nearby for a drink to wait. Instead, the door opened and the greeter apologized for our inconvenience and asked if we wanted to come in and wait until they were ready for us. As the wait staff was busily getting the dining room ready, they seated us, got us water, drinks, and warm bread all before they "opened". We were appreciative of their fine hospitality. As we expected, we all had great meals, including my cod served with a light surry sausage gravy. Of course, we all finished with the fantastic lemon butter cake. The first time I heard about Chez Foushee was in a local newspaper. My friend and I enjoy trying new restaurants out together during lunch time. We both were impressed with the young lady that took care of us, the food, and the appeal of the dining area. My friend and I were able to find parking spaces right outside the restaurant which is a big plus for me. The server was very professional. She was pleasant and friendly even as she took care of several other tables. She knew right when to come over to the table and when to leave us alone. The food was very tasty. I had sauteed tilapia with a rice mixture under and a dark green lettuce salad. My friend had the turkey, bacon and pimiento cheese sandwich which was satisfying and tasty. We shared their famous lemon butter pie for dessert. We will go back again. read more

One of my first real reviews on Yelp and that's a shame. I go out to eat on a very regular basis, 3-4 nights a week minimum. I must say I have never been treated so low and degraded ever in my entire life. A successful restaurant or any business starts with ownership, and the owner is one of the most arrogant people I have ever seen! Started with my fiancé and me wanting to book our wedding reception there, so we came today with our wedding party. We asked to speak to the owner, which we have been emailing for over a week now about this, and his response to us was he's too busy to talk to us! Then he sends his manager over to tell us the same thing our waiter told us! Mind you I understand we had no appointment but least you can say hi and introduce yourself! Especially when half the restaurant is empty and we are by far your largest party who is dropping a large bill on just brunch! Then to top it of as we exit, he wants to speak to my fiancé and only her! I'm sorry but you will not pin us against each other! When you entered it was a friendly atmosphere. We were seated and given water and bread. They have specials every day. The menu has something for everyone. I got the ribeye medium well and it was delicious. The steak was very tender and was not very chewy. The arugula salad was yummy too. The bread on the table was very tasty and had a very good crunch to it. My girlfriend got the seafood platter and she enjoyed it a lot. It's a little costly for every day but a very good meal. First I would like to say the service was excellent! The food was disappointing. Fois Gras over cooked, duck had to be sent back as half of it was raw, with rubbery skin and unrendered fat. Bouillabase was above average, but not great. The only thing that was awesome was the Brussels sprout salad. We Loved the atmosphere, but too pricey for what we were served. I made reservations here for Father's Day brunch and everything went without a hitch! Our server was very accommodating to my parents requests and was very attentive. The food here was good and I got to try the pork belly hash and lemon butter cake which was superb. I recommend trying that if anything. What's great about this place is that they have a parking area right across from their front door, which is super convenient for a restaurant in the city. read more

I was really looking forward to trying this place. Finally, we decided to go for my Birthday. We were all pretty let down. The staff was nice, and the place is quite charming. However, it all started when we got there for our 8:00 reservation and the table wasn't ready and we had to wait 20 minutes before it was....thus forcing us to go to the 3 seat bar (there's nowhere else to stand in the restaurant) and spend more money while we wait. The food is decent at best. My wife didn't finish her appetizer or her entree as they were bland and not very tasty. The pimento was the best appetizer they had, which isn't saying much. The fried oysters with brie and beurre blanc....what beurre blanc? There was hardly any. They brought me my ribeye, which I ordered medium-rare. I cut into one side and it was well done, I cut the other side and it was medium, I cut in the middle and it was medium well. What the hell? I said something, and they were quick to apologize and said not only would they replace it, but also not charge us for it. They then said they would bring another out. It doesn't take more than 7 minutes or so to cook a steak mid-rare. It took them over 20 minutes to bring me another steak. The restaurant wasn't even busy at this point as it was starting to get late and most people were wrapping up. When it came, everyone else was done with their entrees because I told them to eat before it got cold. So pretty much I ate my steak by myself while people were itching to have their dessert and now waiting on me. It's a pretty pricey place, so I don't think I would go back based on my experience at dinner. However, I would possibly be interested in going for brunch one day. We shall see. read more

We visited this place during restaurant week and was excited to try their menu selections. The potato and leech bisque was Amazing, but my red beans and rice lacked the mouthful flavor that I was anticipating. Dinner was followed by dessert, I selected the key lime cake/cheesecake and it was amazing. Overall, would I go back or recommend this place to anyone, I more likely would, but it wouldn't be at the top of my selections. read more

We've picked up lunch from here twice and neither time have I enjoyed it. The first time I got the panzanella with grilled chicken breast (it was a daily special). I've never had panzanella before, but it's my understanding that it's supposed to have a lot of tomatoes, olive oil, and sometimes some herbs. What I got was chucks of rock hard bread that I couldn't even cut with the plastic cutlery, a few tomatoes, and a load of olives (I hate olives...). The chicken breast was way overcooked and slightly burnt. My coworker got the same thing and said she had to choke it down as well. They second time we picked up I went with another daily special, the coppa, salami, and mozzarella sandwich. The bread was soaked through with... mozzarella? Meat juices? I used a knife and fork to eat it after trying to pick it up with my hands and getting juice/oil/cheese water all over myself. It was ok that way, the meat was very stringy, but I just pretended it couldn't see it when I was cutting it. Our company paid for our lunch both times, so I really can't complain. I would never go there and spend my own money though. read more

I don't know if we caught them on a bad night or the new ownership has taken them in a wrong direction but it isn't the same quality anymore. It took them 15 minutes to notice we didn't have menus; they were out of 4 things on their menu; the cocktails aren't as well made and the food wasn't as good ( we almost sent the dessert back ). Our waitress apologized about the dessert and said something about the wait staff having to prepare it cause they are short staffed... while not a bad experience, it is no longer the go to restaurant where you can always expect the same great experience every time. read more

This restaurant is not too far from the Carpenter Center, so it's a great place to go before or after a show. I was somewhat puzzled by the reviewer who complained about cheap quality food - I've noticed that the menu tends to change a bit with the seasons and that the chef makes use of fresh, local ingredients while they are in season. Of the appetizers, I found the homemade pimento cheese a little bland, but the winter squash bisque and the various salads have all been good. The lemon butter cake, for which the restaurant seems to be famous, is also quite good. The meat dishes at this restaurant have all been good every time I've tried them, but I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the oricchiette with roasted cauliflower and pine nuts. So often vegetarian pasta dishes seem to be an afterthought, but this one iss quite flavorful and does not hide the ingredients beneath an abundance of overly heavy sauce. Instead the flavors of the cauliflower and the pine nuts complement eavch other very well, and there is a bit of garlic to liven it up. read more

This place was fantastic!! My girlfriend took me here for my birthday dinner. Our waiter was helpful and friendly. We started off with the fried oyster appetizer - it was delicious. The bread was fresh and warm. For the main course, I ordered the roasted duck, and she ordered the salmon special. The salmon was great, and it came with excellent corn. As for the duck - it was incredible! My girlfriend took me here because I love duck and she heard it was very good - it was probably the best duck I've had. So my wife & I arrived this Saturday night (1 july 2017) only to be told they're closing. Ok, you guys must HATE money. Your ONLINE closing time says 930, your sign on the side of the building says 900. We show up at 840, and the waitress says "we close the kitchen a half hour before the building closes." Ok, that would be 9pm genius. She says nope, tonight it's 830. The absolute BEST way to piss off as many potential customers as possible is to lure them in with a later closing time online, only to tell them one by one as they show up that their actual closing time is a half hour earlier than their online times. ON A SATURDAY NIGHT IN RICHMOND VIRGINIA?!?!?!?!!? REALLY?? You're actually going to close a restaurant on SATURDAY NIGHT in a major city at NINE O CLOCK. Yep. Your owner HATES money. Must be nice... You'd be out of business within six months of opening in Detroit. read more

Very crowded, took 20 minutes to take our order and 45 minutes later informed "there is a problem with the coq au vin" Negotiated to split an order of shrimp creole so we could make an 8:00 show. Only contact was with an efficient but harried waiter. On leaving the only comment to our disappointment was "Oh, sorry" Years of prior experience have been excellent and this was our favorite restaurant; very disappointed. Went to dinner with friends. Everyone was thrilled with their meal - crab cakes, steak, salmon, and the duck (I had the duck). Appetizers/salads were very nice and was the desert. The menu has something for everyone and it's more pared down French and not haute cuisine. It's high end Virginia with a French flair. The waiter described everything honestly and openly. For example, I ordered the Bourbon and thyme crème Brule. He said that you really couldn't the bourbon and thyme....and I couldn't. I was a very normal crème brule (which still made me happy). The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because my cocktail was a bit weak. I couldn't taste the bourbon. The atmosphere is subtle elegance. The owner greeted and seated us and made sure we were happy with the meal. The place is perfect for dinner for two or a group of friends. Prices are a little high for every night dining but very reasonable for a special occasion or a "monthly" treat. I didn't see the lunch menu but I assume it would offer lighter options. The atmosphere is just wonderful. The food was good. The butternut squash soup was delicious but barely warm. The main course selections were not what I expected. The only chicken dish included sausage. The fish choices were snapper, catfish and some other unusual fish that I don't remember, no shrimp, scallops, mussels, salmon, tuna, etc. I ordered the catfish. It came with okra (gross). We ordered espresso, they don't have it. The chocolate tort cake was delicious. My husband says to make sure and say he very much enjoyed his snapper. Bottom line - loved the restaurant. The food was not what I expected. There were no choices I was really excited about. I thought it would be more French, it is indeed Cajun/Creole - my mistake. read more

Have always gone here randomly with the boyfriend and have not been disappointed yet. The service is definitely spot on and the food is right along with that. While I don't disagree that Chez Foushee has savoir faire and a French word in its name, I don't know that I would call the cuisine French. Maybe continental, or somewhat inspired by French panache. Nevertheless, I agree that this is one of the best bets in the city, and I even took my young nieces and nephews to eat there, so don't be intimidated by either the food or the atmosphere. Our server was really kid-friendly, and at lunch the white linen tablecloths were topped with doodle-worthy paper sheets. The kids did fine with pasta salad and a grilled london broil sandwich. I tried a seasonal special, a smoked gouda and apple soup. There are hot entrees as well, and the wine list definitely leans to French vintages. There's also free parking nearby , which is a real plus, and you can get take-out. Chez Foushee is only open for dinner once a month for the First Friday Artwalk events and you need to reserve early for that. read more

Made my first visit to Chez Foushee recently and as Kate P says, it is 'fancy pants'. But still delightful, especially if you go for lunch! You kind of feel like you are in a different era, even if you are dressed down in jeans and a T. I went for the tuna salad plate, which is served on tomatoes with a ton of fresh fruit and a heaping side of potato salad and it was pretty much a perfect lunch! The tuna salad is different then most, more of an Italian-style, without all the mayo. And the potato salad might be some of the best in the city! Will definitely be visiting again! read more

The star is for my favorable impression of the place upon entering; it was all downhill from there. First we were given a scrap of paper featuring last weekend's specials. The waiter returned with the correct scrap only to say that they were, at 6:30, already out of one of them. My husband ordered the duck with dirty rice; it took 40 minutes to arrive. The duck breasts were fine but the accompanying pulled duck was as dry as if it had been pulled for last weekend's special. The dirty rice amounted to barely a forkful. My rockfish tasted of dirt and the shrimp etouffe managed to be too spicy and bland at the same time. I'm a fan of heat, but there was no flavor to support it. Add to this a mix-up over the check and a freezing cold dining room and you get a 1 star experience at best. read more

What a lovely restaurant! Don't underestimate the quality of food there by the quaint & cute appearance. The staff was genuinely nice but not overly attentive that you just wish they'd go away. The menu sounds very plain but the dishes sure taste delicious! I ordered "Fried Oyster Crostini with Sauteed Spinach & Lemon Aioli" and was impressed by how tender and fresh the spinach was. For entry I ordered "Statler Chicken with Roasted Ratatouille", every single thing on the plate made sense and worked together perfectly well. The risotto cake as the staple base was a big plus!!
