Table wasn't quite ready when we popped back at 8pm but they walked us through drinks/wine lists while we waited outside and brought the drinks out to us while we waited. Got in to our table at 8:25pm. The food: Everything was delicious. We ordered 5 dishes between the 2 of us and ended up taking a little bit of the last dish home but only so we had room for dessert. We were in Charleston visiting my son, and he has been telling me for years that Chubby Fish is the best food ever. I'll be honest, I was skeptical. I am not someone who waits in line for a reservation. I always joke that if Jesus Christ is at the end of the line, I'm still not waiting. So... we paid someone to stand in line for us. The place itself is adorable. Small, intimate, and full of charm. I was a little thrown off that the only drink options are beer, wine, or water. Two people in our party don't drink, so that felt like a miss. But then the food came. And I get it now. It was, without question, some of the best food I've had in a long time. Great experience and worth waiting in line! We got in line around 4pm on a Friday and got a 6:45 spot for two people sitting at bar stools. While we waited we went to the Felix for cocktails and sat at the bar- such a great vibe there. Then we went to the Seahorse right next door to the restaurant and enjoyed some orange wine which was great and fast service. Dinner: Our favorites in order were the grilled oysters (must get!!), caviar sandwich (get your own), the curry (so different and flavorful with mint, cilantro, coconut), tuna belly crudo on toast (so delicious), the soft shell crab (just okay for me but my family loved it!). We also got the ube banana putting to go and it hit just the sweet spot back at home. The service was quick and very helpful with recommendations. Everything was amazing- I loved these cavier sandwich more than anticipated. The grilled oysters were in a panang curry or like sauce- I couldn't taste the oysters much but the curry was perfect. The bone marrow was to die for. The tempura fish was way better than anticipated- the sauce really stood out. The grouper- was OK to me, it was very smokey which overpowered the dish for me. I'm not the biggest banana pudding fan but I'm a sucker for anything ube- and this dessert was the perfect palate cleanser after dinner. I arrived at 5:45pm and was told I would be put down for a 7:45pm seating on a Saturday night. I didn't mind, this restaurant was the main thing I looked forward to during my trip. I received a text saying she was running about 15mins behind. I was seated by 8:15pm. I dined alone so I'm sure that made it easier for me to get a seat. Luckily, I was seated at the bar so I got to watch as they prepared the meals, shucked the oysters, and everything. Since I sat at the bar, the cooks served my food. We snagged a coveted NYE reservation and spent almost a month counting down the days to our experience! We found street parking relatively close, so after a quick walk, we checked in with the hostess. We were told they were a tiny bit behind schedule (and we were also early), so she suggested we go next door to Seahorse to kill some time, letting us know she would come get us when our reservation was ready (more to come on Seahorse later). We were seated at the counter bar and our server immediately came over to greet us. When ordering a glass of wine, he recommended one that wasn't on the menu anymore after hearing what I was after. 10/10 recommendation - the wine was great. We snagged a sampling of things from the menu - including their NYE wagyu, truffle, and foie gras special. Everything was plated GORGEOUSLY and tasted even better than it looked! I was (but also wasn't) so surprised that everything was consistently excellent. Well balanced, perfectly seasoned. This chef and staff KNOW how to do seafood in an unexpected way. Second: We'd had the Red Drum that was served up in a bowl of cabbage and this incredible broth...We could have had a bowl broth with bread as a meal it was so good!!! Third: Lamb ribs that fell off the bone...superb!!! Fourth: Gnocci and mushrooms...I wish we had this first because it was incredible but we hit the wall at this point!!! NOTE: As we sat and watched the staff prepare the evening courses like a well oiled machine. I noticed a whole fish snapper being prepared that was $68 and looked fabulous. Every now and again I come across a business that was just so good that I am intimidated to write a review. This is how it has been with Chubby Fish. I just don't feel confident that I can capture the excellence. We ate here two months ago while visiting Charleston. We arrived at 3:30pm and stood in line for an hour and a half until they opened. Once they open, you get an option to dine immediately or put your name on the list to return later. We opted to dine immediately. The restaurant itself is quite humble. Simple decor. No menus, but a giant chalk board with the evenings offerings. The plates and glasses are all mismatched and vintage looking. Tasteful and comfortable is how I would describe it. We were lucky enough to be seated at the chef's counter at the two stools closest to the expeditor who just happened to be the Sous Chef. He was incredibly friendly and helpful with recommending his favorites. It was only two of us and we wanted to order everything. We started with the caviar sammich's. One for each of us was not enough and we immediately ordered two more. We then had the tuna crudo. I'm not going to lie, coming from Hawaii I don't ever expect fish to be as fresh as we get here, but the crudo was melt in your mouth and very fresh tuna. The grilled oysters with curry was my allstar favorite of the evening. I wasn't expecting that, but our new expeditor friend highly recommended it. My taste buds just danced once I tasted it. We also had the cauliflower cacio e pepe, gnuddi with blue crab, and not fried chicken for dessert. All good. We arrived to the line 45 minutes before they opened and did not get a seating, we were instead offered to put the name on the list and wait around 3 hours until 8pm ish. I felt a bit disappointed having waited 5 hours for a table just to be told I could not order food. We got to try three things: 1. bone marrow shrimp tempura: Delicious, very special and unique dish with an interesting presentation 2. : some ceviche like fish on a slice of bread. totally unremarkable and not worth 30 dollars 3. 1000 yes's to this spot!!!!! It's an adventure from the wait to the table. Waiting in line for me was about 25 minutes and since I was a solo diner I was ok with the standing table. It was great! The hostess was sweet and the server Hunter, was great! First order of business: 1/2 dozen oysters and they were fresh and delicious. However, the showstopper was the caviar sandwich. Lord have mercy, this was the best item I indulged in. Worth every cent. I could've easily eaten 3 of them. They're rich, so be sure to pace yourself if you choose to get more than two. The fat tuna belly toast was filling so be sure to share this. I shared mine with the other solo guest standing next to me. The last dish I enjoyed was the scallop pasta with the airy pasta. Phenomenal dining experience and never thought I'd say it but well worth the wait in the hot humidity. Show up at 3:30 and get ready to sweat! The food was so original, unique, and FRESH. I'm so glad I decided to get in line straight from the airport because we had a great time here. And for what you get, it's very reasonably priced. The 4 of us ordered most of the menu and several drinks and it came out to something like $70 a person. Being from the Bay Area I think it would have been almost double that here. I think the menu changes pretty often so I won't get too into specific dishes but don't be afraid to get the meat ones just because it's a seafood joint. A charming little dinning room that feels like a neighborhood kitchen. Blue crab toast: 5/5. If you've never tried this, then you're not ready for what's about to happen to your mouth! Ok - maybe you are ready. Pricey- but wildly delicous. Grouper: 2/5. I really wanted to enjoy this dish, but the fish was so over salted that I couldn't even appreciate the 2 accompanying sauces. Beautiful presentation and nice texture on the fish. Smoked fish curry: 2/5. The first bite was wonderful, but by the 2nd and 3rd bites my palette was completely overwhelmed by salt. Beautiful dish, but overtly salty. The waitress queried the chef about the salinity of the dish and they said it was salty by design. Please consider lowering the salt content. Chili garlic shrimp: 5/5. While deceptively simple, it was absolutely delicious. Shrimp was fresh and had a nice texture. Sauce was well balanced. Service: 5/5. Excellent service by our waitress. She was very knowledgeable about the menu, made great recommendations and responded well to our issue with the salinity of 2 of the dishes. read more
