Chez Nous was incredibly disappointing. The food was great, but the portions were chintzy (see attached pic). Every restaurant in Charleston is closed for in-house dining due to COVID-19; yet they're all vying for customers' business and offering pick up. My wife and I looked at their menu today at noon and, while limited, decided we'd take the plunge. I called and the guy who answered was friendly. I told him we've heard great things about Chez Nous and now seemed like the perfect time to give them a try. I asked him if their portions were decent, and he said, "yep...our gnocchi comes in a big bowl and the veal cutlets today are really big." Relying upon his description, I ordered for a 6:00 p.m. pick up. As you can see from the gnocchi pic, it's far from a 'big bowl'. Again, the food tasted good, but he deliberately misled me, and my wife and I feel deceived. Had he been honest, I would've respected that, but as it turns out, there a hundreds of restaurants in Charleston - all of whom are hurting right now - and I'll gladly spend our money elsewhere...helping HONEST businesses. read more

Answering a question to an out of town diner on their way to visit my beloved city for the first time prompted me to review Chez Nous, an overwhelmingly romantic establishment run by the Panella family of Bin 152. Bin 152 is a darling French wine/cheese/charcuterie/homemade bread bar, also part art/antiques gallery on upper King, which I adore, and so when I heard that Parisian-born Fanny Panella, along with her husband, renovated a historic single-family home in the Cannonborough neighborhood which was then transformed into an intimate French bistro, I could hardly wait to taste the classic French fare sourced from the bounty of the lowcountry via the talents of Chef Jill Mathias. The exposed brick and wide-plank wooden floors are reminiscent of an old French farmhouse, an appropriate feel for this place, which translates to "our house." The menu changes with the availability of ingredients, and so this restaurant certainly emphasizes flavor and freshness, usually served within a beautiful Le Creuset dish. And with only a couple options for each course, you feel like you're dining at a friend's chic rustic dinner party. This place is always fantastic. I had not visited in a while so after visiting 1 or 2 other places that were packed for lunch on a Saturday we landed here. They serve the same small menu for both lunch and dinner that normally changes everyday. The menu is handwritten in English and French? which isn't too easy to read...honestly the only thing I don't like about the restaurant. So I always check the menu on instagram before. They post every dish with its description everyday. I had never been for lunch and it may be the only time I go now. There was no wait and you get the same exact menu for lunch and dinner. The food is amazing. We literally ordered one of everything on the menu except for 1 app. The menu is small so this would feed 2 people just fine. Each course was amazing. The veal app was delicious, our entrees were great...scallops for one and pork loin with cauliflower gratin for the other. And dessert didn't let down either...but the eclairs were def better than the blackberry tart. Delectable. Warm, inviting, and everything you'd ever hoped this gem off the beaten path could be. Excited but equally apprehensive of the "two option" only menu, (I hate mushrooms, and they're always a chefs favorite), I was not disappointed. A shrimp and cauliflower salad was a combination I never would have tried, and by the first bite I trusted that chef definitely knows what she is doing. I would blindly order and eat anything she made. Granted, that's essentially what one must do unless you can decode the intricate, meticulously written menu, which by its second pass my eyes and brain considered the pretty thing exhaustive. Three of us went last night to celebrate lots of exciting things happening in our lives. We started by having a glass of wine at the bar. We asked our bartender lots of questions about her favorite wines and tried her suggestions, a Rose and a Gamay; and then took her suggestion to have a 2010 St. Joseph with dinner. Rebecca was our waitress for dinner and she was amazing. She was patient and courteous, there when we needed her and left us alone when we didn't. We all had the head on shrimp for an appetizer. The shrimp was served over braised fennel which was amazing, very well balanced and delicate flavors created a rather complex dish. For our main dish we all had the steak frites, which was perfect. The fries were crispy and creamy at the same time. The steak was beefy and tender and topped with Bearnaise sauce. I could cover everything in Bearnaise sauce. Our wine selection was pretty amazing with both the beef and the shrimp. Desert was Les Canalés de Bordeaux and a glass of champagne. Everything was simply perfect. Understated, elegant, and personal. This is definitely going on my always go back to list. read more

The $20 salad was underwhelming and small - not sure what made that dish worthy of a limited menu. My fish had a nice sear on it but the bed of carrots and broccoli rabe was so disappointing. My wife's duck was a much better dish. The crust on the chocolate tart was missing salt I think. A shame. read more

Nicki (I hope I spelled that correctly) was a fabulous host/server/bartender. It is hard to make roast chicken interesting, but this place does so. Similar to The Gardener's Cottage in Edinburgh, Scotland, this place serves a limited seasonal menu supported by fabulous service, architecture, and drinks. 5 stars for a dessert with stewed prunes? As a brief visitor to Charleston, I sought to make the best of the city's dining choices. Even without having tried many places in my short stay, I can undoubtedly claim that Chez Nous must rank in the top tier. We enjoyed a thorough sampling of the brunch menu on a Sunday. It began with the bread basket and a homemade lavender blueberry jam, whose aroma heralded freshness and happiness. The quiche slice, though small for the price, was tasteful. My blue ribbon goes to the pasta, a healthy mound of al dente fettuccine bathing in a rich sauce of fresh tomatoes and other embellishments. The staff is amiable, accommodating and lively, all imbued with distinct professionalism and responsibility. folks, 4.5 stars, really? look at the fish they served to me, two pieces of burned bass fillet. i would have never served it. i told them that i could not eat it, they changed it, this time with a different fish, see the photos of both. now, the one star is not for serving a terribly burned food, though such a "fook you, eat this piece of $hit" attitude would rightfully deserve it. no, two more reasons: 1) there was absolutely no creativity on that plate, veggies, tomatoes an onions, to be precise, a piece of protein and some sauce. if i try to make a fame by serving only two dishes a night, i would either try to be creative or serve carefully selected ingredients. 2) the dish was terrible on the ingredient side too. have i mentioned "$hit" already? yeah, the fish was smelling awful, really awful, i am glad they offered me a different fish. any way, the waiters were great, but i am not rating them here. this place does not deserve the buzz it creates, serving such a $hitty plate cannot be explained by a simple mistake, i don't eat at restaurants where the chef does not care about their customers read more

It does not happen often when you visit a small, classy restaurant that begins with the work of a talented chef & her staff. Chez Nous was around the corner from our Airbnb. The quaint restaurant is a converted historic home. The menu changes daily and is remarkable. We had a salad with pine nut dressing you will want to have at home. The mussels in a savory white wine broth was soaked up by our baguette and we could have been happy with this alone. The main course of veal and snapper was delicious and the sauces a taste of superb flavors to be enjoyed ever so slowly. Chez Nous will be an experience you will treasure!! We were searching around for someplace different for brunch and we came across Chez Nous. The restaurant is in the cutest rustic little house. We luckily were the only ones in their which was cool to have the whole place to ourselves. We started with veal sliced thin with aoli and crust bread (I could not get enough of it) then we had the scallops with peas and white wine and roasted pork with cauliflower gratin, we finished with a black berry tart and an eclair. Everything was so good! The staff was really nice and friendly and the atmosphere was really cool. Incredibly crafted meals. You will need to make a reservation, probably a few weeks in advance. The menu changes EVERY DAY. You don't even know what is going to be on the menu. It's a leap of faith I encourage you to take! You'll be guaranteed 2 salad options, a meat or fish entree, and a dessert. I won't go into the details of the food as you will never be able to get what I had, effectively. But it was one of my top 5 meals of all time. I couldn't imagine that yours would be bad so long as you love food and are not a picky eater. The restaurant was established in an 1840s home. Dining is between the outdoor courtyard, lined with vines and beautiful original stonework. Great for larger parties. The first and second floor of the home. Good for couples or a double date. I did not catch a look at the upstairs, which is a small regret I have, as I am an architecture enthusiast. I'm certain it is lovely with crooked floors and true to period art styles. Major disappointment. I would not go back and would not recommend this place to anyone. My husband and I are visiting Charleston for our anniversary and did our research and chose to come here for our big Saturday night dinner. We were super excited. The ambiance was nice...at first. We were seated on the first floor, near the bar, which was rustic and charming, but we were so close to the tables next to us that our waitress kept bumping into us or the couples next to use while serving. Very awkward. Chicory salad appetizer was actually dressed lightly but was so salty that we actually couldn't eat it. It was the kind of salty where your tongue tingles a little bit after a bite. My husband ordered the "fish with stewed peppers" (weird they don't tell you what type of fish for this kind of $$$) and I got the ribeye. I asked the waitress how the ribeye was cooked and she says "to the chefs preference based on the cut, but either medium rare or medium", which is fine with me. Ribeye comes and the first half is pretty good...definitely medium rare/medium. I get into the 2nd half and it's completely rare. To the point where it was kind of gross to eat it. At that point my husband was done with his meal and we just call it a day. We mention it to the waitress, she apologizes, then a manager comes over and basically lectures me about how this is how ribeyes are and was very condescending and barely apologetic. They took it off the bill (appropriately), but we were so underwhelmed so we just paid and left. If you are only going to offer 4 dishes (plus dessert) for this kind of money; they better be the best dishes I've ever eaten. read more

A new favorite! I was a little worried because reviews were a little inconsistent but am so glad we went. Made a reservation noting it was my bday and was given a very nice end table upstairs. The house and the ambience inside are worth a visit alone, but add in the simple yet delicious food, friendly service, and amazing wine list (Sancerre? By the glass? Thank you) and this place will have your heart. You do need to be ok with trying new foods and not someone who likes to make several changes to dishes. I live in Charleston and recently tried Chez Nous for the first time with my wife and her parents last Saturday for an 8 pm reservation. I had heard good things, but was extremely disappointed with our experience. First off, we reserved a table for 4 in the courtyard for the ambiance, but were seated at a community table, with the party next to us listening in on our conversation. There goes the ambiance. The menu is very small (2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 deserts). My father-in-law and I each ordered the same appetizer (octopus salad) and he same entree (swordfish). About 10 minutes after ordering, we were told they were out of the octopus salad. We could either order the other option or a new option (a canned tuna salad). Of course the canned tuna salad doesn't sound appetizing at all, so I opted for the ricotta salad with snap peas, the only other choice. It lacked flavor and was really just a plate of snapped peas on top of a heap of ricotta. Time for the entrees. The wait staff brought out the entrees and we began to dig in. A few minutes into eating my fish, we overhear the waitress tell the couple next to us, at the community table, that they are now out of the swordfish. The replacement is grouper. We hear that and it dons on me that I'm not eating the swordfish I ordered, it's the grouper. They ran out of the fish we ordered and served us the replacement without alerting us or asking if we'd like to choose something different. My father-in-law doesn't like grouper so I decided to say something to the waitress. She was apologetic, but confused. She didn't know they had swapped out the fish. The manager then came over and barely apologized. Instead, he looked at our plates and saw we had starting eating the fish and sarcastically said, "well, it looks like you didn't have a problem with the grouper." The exchange was awkward to say the least as the entire courtyard looked and listed in. Needless to say, in a city rich with great restaurants, we won't be returning to Chez Nous. There are plenty of better options with more menu choices and less arrogant management. I'd give the restaurant a 1-star review, but the wine was delicious. read more

In a city full out outstanding restaurants Chez Nous is probably my favorite. Hidden down a quiet alleyway, just walking in makes you think you are in on a secret. The small number of seats reinforces that sense of privacy and exclusivity. The limited menu (which changes daily) focuses on French-inspired comfort fare and includes two starters, two entrees, and two desserts. My wife and I are able to eat the entire menu on each visit! There is little point in my expounding on how good individual courses are/were on my visits because it is unlikely you will ever see those offerings. Chez Nous is also one of my favorite Instagram accounts because they post their menu daily. Every morning in Wisconsin I'm forced to ask, "Can we have....for dinner tonight? We could if we were at Chez Nous." If a place like Chez Nous existed where I live I would eat there at least once per week. It feels like home and tastes like heaven. read more

The hostess refused to seat us because we were 5 minutes late for our reservation. We had driven all day from out of town and were delayed by a wreck just before arriving. Totally understandable if that is their policy, but the hostess was extremely rude about it and couldn't have acted more annoyed. Honestly thankful they turned us away. I'm disappointed. We had dinner next door and simply walked in to seek out some quality dessert and drinks to finish the night. We had no expectations really and kept an open mind. I remember reading positives about this restaurant online. There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the ice cream or chocolate mousse, the ambience was beautiful and intimate like out of an architectural digest magazine but unfortunately that was the only positive. There was underlying annoyance felt throughout our time there, and the passive aggressive attitudes of the service staff was very noticeable. We regularly dine at fine restaurants in New York City where food and service are top notch, but I've learned throughout the years that high price point and good food do not always correlate, and service is really what makes and breaks the experience regardless of where you dine. Judging by the dessert, it wasnt particularly memorable but really there is no justification for the arrogance displayed. I'd rather be turned away if accommodating us was such a pain. We walked in wanting to see whether we should make a reservation for dinner before we go home so we wouldn't miss out on a memorable experience, the answer is a definite no sadly. I am giving it 3 stars because of this and the ambiance. The food was extremely disappointing. The menu for our night was a salad or mushroom crepes. We went with the crepes. A fish dish and a veal dish. I got the veal and my husband got the fish. I could have made the crepes, nothing out of the ordinary. Granted, I lived in Paris for a couple of years and I am familiar with french cuisine. The veal was good, a little bit on the salty side and again nothing out of the ordinary. I went to school in France and it tasted the same as the one served at my school cafeteria. If the restaurant was going for the home cooked feeling it nailed it. I guess I was expecting more of a french unique gourmet experience. In my opinion, the restaurant is overpriced for the food it serves. read more
