Lovely patio, ambiance and very good service. Nice wine list. The onion soup was fantastic, salads were very good, entrees were ok - overcooked chicken thighs and overcooked snapper. One of two deserts was pedestrian (tapioca pudding with caramel sauce). Soaked strawberries and cookie crisp was good. Entrees we're not worth the $38 and $44 prices paid. We brought a bottle of lovely pinot which was worth the $35 corkage fee. Bottle of Sancerre was good, wines by the glass were average. read more

Really loved our dinner visit - a short walk from the Hyatt hotel on a beautiful spring evening. There is o shortage of terrific restaurants in town, but this one should be on your list. Every seat in the house (literally) upstairs and downstairs was full, so we were seated at the huge communal table outside. The house is rustic and charming, seemingly transporting you to the French countryside. The staff could not be more pleasant and we really had fun with our server. The view on a full moon night was stunning - candle lit table, a huge tree fronting the moon, and my lovely bride - doesn't get better than that! The menu (lunch and dinner) changes each day, so no sense in touting any one dish (pic of our menu posted) but we wound up eating some of everything and all was most excellent! The menu is a three course affair, and consists of a choice between one of two appetizers, one of two entrees and one of two desserts. A nice, quaint restaurant with limited seating, but terrific food. Since the restaurant changes their menu daily, you can really taste the freshness of the ingredients used. The mussels and mushroom salad were flavorful, the fish and duck were cooked perfectly (as well as the accompanying vegetables), and the desserts had the rare combination of being extremely tasty, but not overwhelmingly sweet. I would recommend Chez Nous to any food enthusiasts who happen to make their way to Charleston. read more

Wow!! Great choice for a Valentines dinner...and probably any dinner based on what we had!! The menu changes daily and hen eat way to see what is happening is to follow Chez Nous on Instagram, that being said, be prepared to want to be their nightly! They post pictures of the evenings meal Offerings and having now experienced that meal the pictures are spot on and delicious!! We did have some difficulty finding the location based on google maps, we walked by it once and never saw a sign, but back tracked again based solely on google maps and found it! Still never saw a sign - do not let that discourage you... or it well worth that confusion and more!! They offered two first course options, two main courses and 2 desserts. The options for the first course were: white asparagus salad or smoked salmon salad, second course: spaghetti with lump crab or veal chop with mustard sauce, finishing with a rose meringue or Nutella semi Freddo. We opted to share the first two courses and had one dessert, the meringue. EVERYTHING was amazing! Flavorful and delicious!! I am only sad that I can't experience more nights at this amazing restaurant, they obviously have a commitment to excellence! read more

Chez Nous is renowned as a small, intimate, French restaurant in Charleston with an ever-changing daily menu which conveys the feeling of dining in a private home versus a typical restaurant. The fact that the restaurant is indeed in a small, charming, old house certainly helps this aura as well. What really makes the whole operation shine however is the dedicated care put into the French country cuisine served and the astute decision to limit menu offerings to only a few choice, seasonal, dishes per night. When we were there, they had triggerfish--a supraregional fish common to the Caribbean up to the southern mid-Atlantic US coast--in an herb sauce, duck breast with fig sauce, and a simple leeks dish plus Gâteau Basque which I felt they did (perhaps surprisingly for a French restaurant) more in the southern Basque style than northern. Regardless, the Gâteau Basque and everything--every single little thing bar none--was superb. The atmosphere is intimate, even dark, and room is in short supply; if you have one or two patrons you miiiiiiiiight get in as we did on the spot, but reservations are a better bet. read more

Chez Nous Review: Greeting: When we first walked in we didn't feel very welcome. The entire staff was standing in the hall. There was no formal greeting nor an interest in telling any history of the restaurant when they inquired if it was our first time. No inquiry about where we were from. Very stale! Seating: Taken upstairs. The table was cramped and barely any room to squeeze into rickety seats. The table size barely allowed room for beverage glasses. We felt like we were in a sardine can cramped in the corner. The atmosphere was not conducive to any intimacy. Service: Server was pleasant but didn't have the verbiage to describe the food. I asked if the rabbit was local and she neglected to come back with an answer. She lacked the follow up to inquire about dishes. She didn't acknowledge when dishes were untouched or difficult to eat. Menu: The server even complained about the writing of the menu. We could not read it! She said she figured some of the writing out through the years. Food: Part of the attraction was the menu made fresh every day. We were excited about seeing what The Chef had to offer. In all honesty it lacked creativity. Chef only had to come up with 4 dishes and two desserts per night and these were our options? Food was so bland and generic. One would think "Wild" shrimp would be different sizes not as uniformed. All my shrimp were exactly the same size joined by cherry tomatoes, butter and pastis. The steak tartare had no love and no acid and came with bread crisps. The only thing nice to say is the presentation was nice but "old school". I knew to combine the surrounding ingredients of red onion, capers, egg yolk, mustard and parsley but the table next to us took a bite of just the meat without mixing and didn't pursue a second bite. None of the tables had condiments to add salt or pepper to a dish. When my wife asked for lime to accompany her sparkling water the server said they didn't have any and instead brought lemons. We ended up using the lemmon from her water to squeeze in the steak tartare. The first entree option was flounder. It accompanied a Carolina Squash Casserole. The flounder was extremely over cooked and dry with no sauce. It was unpleasant. With only two entrees to make for the day Chef was not inclined to make a sauce to enhance the dish. The squash casserole was the ONLY enjoyable dish of the entire meal. The second entree option was rabbit. We asked if it was locally farmed and the server never came back with an answer. The rabbit was pan seared and cooked to order. The rabbit didn't appear to be braised for any period of time as was apparent by the difficulty in eating it. The rabbit was served with two legs and two thighs connected and served with a chic pea cake and spinach, chanterelle mushrooms and king trumpet mushrooms. The rabbit came to the table with very little sauce. The entire rabbit was tough and challenging to eat with the hip bone still connected. In an atmosphere like this using my hands should not have been what was needed to eat the rabbit. The chanterelles were never found on the plate. The king trumpets were also tough. The chic pea cake didn't even belong on the dish. When the server came to the table she could clearly see the challenge to eat the rabbit. Bones were all over the table. She must have seen this before because it didn't raise any level of concern. When we failed to order dessert that should have been a red flag. No manager came to touch the table. It is apparent their food snob elitism is out of control. read more

What a special gem in the upper King area! We dined here for New Years Eve and are still talking about it (my apologies for the delayed review; my 2020 has been hectic thus far). We had made reservations for outside and were pleasantly surprised by the presence of heat towers in the outside courtyard. Even more precious, Chez Nous provided blankets on every chair. This combination allowed me to take off my coat (so my NYE dress was actually visible) and a still be warm. The courtyard seated at least a dozen. Soft lights created a very romantic atmosphere. If you do not know, some of Chez Nous' charm comes from its ever-changing menu; they offer 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts each day. The menu draws mainly from French cuisine and includes influences from Spain and Italy. We are adventurous eaters, so we were excited to try the daily menu sight unseen. We got one of everything. For the appetizers, they served foie gras with toast points and a salad with melted Brie and cherries. Part of their preparation process for the foie gras includes bathing it in milk, which made it creamier than I've had in the past. Otherwise it was about what you expect from foie gras. THE SALAD THOUGH- something about the combination of the fresh, tart berries and the melty Brie and the acid from the dressing made it one of the best salads we have ever had. We wish we had ordered two of them! Moving on to the entrees, we enjoyed both the scallops and the filet mignon. The scallops sat atop a bed of parsnip purée. They were perfectly cooked, not oversalted, and the combination of the parsnip purée and the roasted brussel sprout leaves was magical! The filet mignon was also cooked beautifully and paired really well with the red wine reduction. The desserts were probably the least memorable of the courses, but only because everything else was so extraordinary! We had a chocolate terrine, which was rich and fudgy, and a chestnut cake, which came with lovely caramelized chestnuts. Our server was wonderful: bubbly and clearly passionate about the food. I did not take any photos of the food because it would have ruined the intimate setting, but Chez Nous does a great job of documenting their dishes on their Instagram account. Overall, I would highly recommend Chez Nous for a romantic date or an intimate get together with people who are passionate about food and the shared experience of dining. I heard about Chez Nous from the proud owners. This French couple is legit. They own Bin 152 on King Street, which is a wine bar that serves light fare. The couple have been working on opening up for quite some time and finally all of their efforts have paid off and we now get to enjoy all of their hard work! Chez Nous is definitely not a tourist place. It is off the beaten path in downtown. Parking is scarce and you may have a hard time finding the place as it sits off of the main road. Located inside of an old house, featuring outdoor seating and close quarter interior seating both upstairs and downstairs. If you sit upstairs, be ready to get to know your neighbor. Very, very close seating arrangements. This atmosphere leans towards the romantic with dim candlelight lighting and soft French music in the background. On the evening I dined upstairs, it got very loud, due to the close seating, but I enjoyed it. I like a lively atmosphere. The handwritten menu changes daily. Very, very limited options on the menu . Specifically, there were two appetizers (one which was a salad), two entrees and one dessert choice. But let me assure you, they know what they are doing in the kitchen here. Whatever you select will be amazing. We started with clams as an appetizer. They were tossed in a orange colored sauce. I honestly am not a clam fan but these converted me. They were awesome (I've included a picture). For my entrée, I selected the grouper. It was awesome (included a picture). We also tried their dessert, which was a simple gelato. The good news is that the place is quaint and the staff are friendly and helpful. The bad news is that very limited menu means (2 apps, 2 entries, 2 desserts) you are at the mercy of the chef. If you are not fond of the selections that day, you either leave or suck it up. We were not excited about the two entries offered (Red snapper and a past dish) but decided to give them both a chance. The snapper was tough and rubbery, not to mention very small....not sure how fresh of a piece it was. The pasta was undercooked and not appealing. We did not finish either dish and that staff was not astute enough to pick up that something was wrong and to offer a correction. Now I'm amongst the Elite in Yelp, I need to up my game! What a simply delightful and quaint place Chez-nous is! "Where we live" is very aptly named. Located on a narrow street off of Cannon street, opposite Tapio, Chez-nous is a family home converted to a restaurant. Parking is an issue so it's possible you may have to endure a short walk to the restaurant. The home is beautifully renovated and maintained to look very antiquated from the inside to match the outside. There is a patio area outside for a larger group gathering. I'm sure many a jovial time is enjoyed here. Patrons can be seated both downstairs or upstairs. There is a very intimate and cozy feel. Perfect for a romantic dinner for two. What is unique here, is that there are only two appetizers and two entrees on the menu each day. The menu changes each day and the same selection is served for lunch and dinner. This menu is available for viewing on Facebook and Instagram. We ordered the Veal cutlets which was enough for both of us to share. My friend had ordered shrimp risotto as well, and with me not being keen on risotto he had this all to himself. He struggled to finish the dish it was so generously portioned! The food was amazing. I was blown away. It was so flavorful and we had fresh lemons served to acidify the robust taste of the veal. My friend eagerly enjoyed his shrimp risotto and declared it was a winner. The pricing was very reasonable at $24 per entree. There are desserts available but we personally couldn't go that far. To summarize, this is a hidden gem of a restaurant in a rapidly gentrifying part of town. It is a must- go. read more

We were so disappointed here. We were looking forward to a leisurely French dinner, but ended up leaving as soon as we finished our meals. My advice: request a table when you make a reservation. When we entered the courtyard, we saw large parties and intimate 2-tops enjoying their meals and the ambiance. They seated us at the bar, which we often don't mind in certain settings. This is a very small bar with uncomfortable unpadded seats with no back. There was an empty 2-top and another table finishing dinner when we were seated. We knew we were not going to be comfortable or happy where we were, and we asked to move to a table. They told us it was not possible. They didn't have anywhere to move us. We probably should have left at that point, but we were excited for a French meal at a highly recommended restaurant, so we stayed. Out of the minimal options on the menu, we both ended up ordering pappardelle with lamb ragu. It was good, but definitely not the French meal we were so hoping for. After that, we paid and left. It's silly to think that our experience would have been so much better if only we sat somewhere different. Instead, we sat at the bar next to two guys who clearly knew the owner. They talked to her all during our time there. She never once acknowledged us or asked how anything was. Even with the good dinner, the lack of service or concern for the comfort of their customers makes it impossible to give Chez Nous more than one star. read more

Simply incredible. One of the best meals we have ever eaten (at a price point to match). We made a reservation a week ahead of time, and the only times available were 9:30 pm or after. However, we called to let them know that we would be available for an earlier seating if they had an opening, which they did at 8:15. We were seated immediately upon arriving. We sat inside, which has somewhat close quarters, although the patio looked pleasant as well. The menu is curated daily, so you will have a choice between 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts. We tried one of everything, as did both of the tables beside us. It was all perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious. We also shared a bottle of wine. A special experience. The restaurant is dimly lit and you are provided with just two choices; 2 appetizers, and 2 main courses. All were masterpieces in preparation and freshness. From what I understand the menu changes daily based on what's available. The service was accommodating and warm. Great advice on the wine selection. We started with toasts with burrata, basil and fresh tomatoes. So fresh and so much better than it sounds. We then had delicate ricotta dumplings with a pesto topping and a delicious olive oil dressing. Wonderful!! From start to finish, this is a true winner. Chez Nous is tucked away in a ridiculously charming building hidden from the street. The pocket-sized dining room has a handful of tables and maybe a dozen stools at the bar, with just a few more tables upstairs. The patio outside has a long communal table and one two-top tucked next to the building beside a window looking in. Its a rustic, romantic ambiance throughout. A new menu is created each day with just two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts. For our dinner, we decided to split both appetizers (sauteed calamari and a kale and radicchio salad) and one entree (moules en frites) and then finished with a cheese plate (taleggio) for dessert. Wow. The plates were beautiful and everything was prepared to perfection. They do a fantastic job of blending flavors and dishes from Southern France, Northern Italy and Spain. The service was top-notch. Very attentive and everyone made it a point to make guests feel very welcome. Because of the diminutive size of the restaurant, many conversations flowed between tables, just building upon the overall experience of the evening. Highly recommend Chez Nous!!! This was our first visit to Chez Nous. The restaurant is in a very rustic building with very minimal decor, consisting of old photographs on the walls. It's a small space and doesn't accommodate many people. In fact, one is seated very close to other diners. It's fine unless they happen to speak very loudly which was our experience today. There's an outside space with a few tables as well. The menu as advertised consists of two appetizers, two entrees, and two desserts. It's hand written and hard to read. Why not type it out? The server was good about explaining what the dishes were and how they were prepared. We chose two appetizers of whipped ricotta cheese with a mustard sauce and sauteed sweetbreads with turnips. The sweetbreads were nicely cooked as were the turnips. The ricotta cheese course was bland. We both had sauteed duck breast on a bed of whipped potatoes with cherry sauce. It was done medium rare and was very tasty. We shared dessert---a tart with a creamy flan filling with blueberries. The bottom of the crust was under baked but the filling was very flavorful. We ended with two double espressos which were very good. While the service was good and very responsive, I found the restaurant to be not the most comfortable surroundings. Chez Nous gets a lot of love from bartenders and waitstaff throughout Charleston which is always a nice sign. Super small menu. They have two starters. Two mains. The wine list is small but very well put together and priced. The space is intimate and could be romantic. Maybe? I think so. Waitstaff were great. They are all your new best friends - great attitude all around. Smart and on it. Oh, right. The food. Everything we had was tasting. There was some pasta with clams. There was chopped beef (i.e. basically a hamburger) with a fried egg. I had a spookily good green salad. Yay. read more

My husband and I had the privilege to visit Chez Nous three times during our recent stay in Charleston. We were excited to see what the menu would hold each day as the chef offers two new starters, two new entrees and two new desserts daily. We enjoyed their fish entree at each of our lunches along with whatever starter we selected for the day. My husband and I agree Chez Nous hands down receives the Best Entree in Charleston Award. Ambiance was very warm, service with Nicky was great (and Very knowledgeable) and food was outstanding. We tried everything on their carefully built menu. Both salads were fresh, amazing, served with perfectly fresh baguette and Sancerre - Sauv blanc. The duck with cherries was exquisite and paired perfectly with the Tempranillo - Riojas, Spain. The swordfish was delicate yet flavorful and not over cooked. Puff pastry au crème was sublime! read more

This restaurant has a great, Charleston setup. Set in a house, you immediately feel the Southern hospitality taking over. Making reservation is recommended but since it was low season, I was able to get a spot the same day. You can sit outside, inside table or inside bar. There is really no bad option to sit. The amazing thing is, no FOMO! 2 apps, 2 entrees and 2 desserts to choose from. If you have a good good companion, you just order everything so you can try. I want to list everything we ate, but since the menu changes daily, it might be stupid. I'll summarize, everything was great! From the service, to the drinks (mainly Belgian beers) to the food.
