Let's talk about the best tomato salad I've ever had. We spent most of the meal trying to figure out what was in the tasty dressing. The snapper was delicious and cooked slightly crispy, which was a home run. Sabrina was a rock star server and couldn't have been more attentive. I can't believe I've never eaten here before! This has to be hands down one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston and I've lived here 3 years and have tried almost every restaurant in the city. Trevor the bartender was incredibly helpful with our wine selection and gave great advice when it came to how much we should order portion-wise. Wow. If you can get here, you should. My husband had black bass and said it was the best he's ever had. I loved it too. Small menu but well chosen. Special place that takes their food very seriously. The four of us liked this place, but we were hoping to love it. First what we didn't like: the grouper entree was a little overcooked and the super-limited number of menu choices was an unpleasant surprise for this vegetarian. I can't blame the restaurant for this, but it reminded me to always read some reviews before making a reservation. You might like the improvisational Jazz music, but we found it to be too improvisational. The bench seating is hard, flat wood, which gets uncomfortable after a while. Here's what we liked: the restaurant is in a beautiful, intimate setting, the menu is a nice change from the typical nouveau American choices, the food was served beautifully and swiftly, the clam and pork appetizer was delicious, the bib lettuce salad was tasty, the quail entree was very good, and the chocolate mousse and cherry tart were the highlights of the meal. read more

Ok, so after reading the reviews I expected this restaurant to be primo. My wife and I came here for our anniversary. First off, the ambiance seems very quaint and eclectic. The few minutes we waited increased our anticipation of an excellent experience. We were shown to our table upstairs and Bam, we were greeted with a postage stamp sized table literally adjoined to the table right next to it. For the next hour, our anniversary lunch was overshadowed by the conversation going on at the table that was for all intent and purposes, part of ours. My side featured a hard as a rock bench which became increasingly more painful as minutes passed. We shared a pear and walnut salad and it was bland and bitter at the same time with too much dressing. We ordered the chicken over polenta and it was pretty good. Chez Nous, which opened on 3/18/14, brings a unique European restaurant concept to Charleston, from the Panellas (the couple who owns local-favorite wine bar, Bin 152 @ http://www.yelp.com/biz/bin-152-charleston), and their chefs (Jill Mathias, Executive Chef and Juan Cassalett, Sous Chef). (Full disclosure, my wife and I have been huge fans of Bin 152 since we moved in down the street a few years ago.) Accepting no reservations, Chez Nous offers a different menu each day for lunch and dinner (yes, the menu changes daily, how ambitious is that?) with two appetizers, two main courses, and two desserts, along with a diverse wine list. It's a cozy and romantic two-story place: lots of dark wood, candlelight, and French music. My wife and I were lucky enough to get the chance to try Chez Nous on one of their "soft opening" nights, which ran smoothly--to my surprise given how many moving parts go into opening a restaurant. The appetizers were octopus or pork belly; the main courses were house-made chicken/veal sausage or Catalan fish stew; and the desserts were fig pudding or an orange tart. All creative, well-executed and delicious. Friendly and efficient service rounded out the experience. Personally, I thought somebody would have to be a little nuts to open a new restaurant with the white-hot Charleston fine-dining scene competition, but it seems the owners and chefs have successfully carved out a delicious niche for themselves! What a bomb. The staff was unwelcoming & our waiter was just unattentive and rude. The menu is written in some artsy script that no one can read. The waiter was inconvenienced by logical questions or requests. There are two appetizer choices & two entree choices and the chef refused a simple modification. Yes...refused. We were crammed next to another couple who was seated after us when there were 5 empty tables. No one refilled our water & we had to ask for them to pour the champagne from the bottle we ordered. We made the long trek out to visit this restaurant based on reviews, but were sorely let down by the price tag, quality of food, and snooty service. We paid $27 for a fish entree and felt robbed. The fish seemed fresh, but was so desperately over-salted I could barely get it down. I might have brought this up to the waitress, but she served up little more than attitude before disappearing for good. The green beans were so overcooked they were mush, and the mushrooms didn't have much flavor. If you're only going to serve two entrees per night, they should be excellent, not over-cooked and caked with so much salt you can't taste anything. Can it get any better? Why yes, it can, because it changes everyday. Something i forgot to mention in my previous review is that they do not have liquor. Do not let that deter u though. The food is so unexpectedly delicious and the service top notch. Its pricey but on par with mist downtown restaurants. Had a melon, prosciutto, mint and tomato salad. sound weird? Not at all! It took me 15 to find a one-hour only parking spot. The food is very good. However, for a $300 bill for two people, Chez Nous only provides a two-entree, two appetizer menu with two lame desserts. In fairness, the bill included three sauvignon blanc wines and two Rose wines (22/glass where other restaurants would be $10/glass less). Zero parking. I has to ask for butter. The owner says, "This is a French restaurant. French restaurants don't serve butter." Really? There is a word for it.."Beurre". In a city overflowing with great restaurants, this one has great food cooked the way the chef likes it, period. Suggestion: look into Sous Vide. For a limited kitchen, you could offer a full menu and come closer to justifying the high price. Also, for this pricing, Cypress, Magnolia and Blossom offer free parking and the check average is less by $50 - $100. Final suggestion: rent space from the jerks that own the empty parking lot next to your restaurant. You are making enough money to do so... read more

This place was AWESOME! Our friends in Charleston insisted we go there last Saturday in spite the fact that Chez Nous doesn't take reservations (always a red flag for me). Well, we arrived around 5:45 to be the only guests for a while. There are only two appetizers (salad or goat cheese stuffed peppers in our case), two entrees (lamb shank - fantastic - or fish - can't remember which), two desserts and one cheese plate on the menu any given day - but they are different any single day. Everything we had was fantastic. Accentuated by the fact that our server, Rebecca, must have been the best waitress we've had in a long, long time - if not ever. The wines she recommended were spot on (and not super expensive - actually the mark up seems to be just double the store price). Maybe that's because the owner, chef and staff meet before service to discuss the best pairings. We will DEFINITELY be back here next time we go to Charleston. read more

After hearing and reading rave reviews I was excited to try this place but unfortunately it disappointed. The food was unexciting and nothing really special about it other than being overpriced with an arrogant air. Perhaps we were there on an off night as others seem to have a better experience with the food and waitstaff. Our dinner options were salt cod or green salad with rabbit or grouper with herbed lentils. The food was prepared well which is the reason I'm leaving 2 stars although I found the menu choices lacking in creativity. In fact, I could have prepared them myself at home (and my most extensive cooking experience is with Blue Apron). Literally stumbled on this hidden, little gem while walking the dog at 10 PM during a visit to Charleston. Stopped and had a glass of most excellent wine sitting on the porch with the pooch. First of all, the atmosphere is charming. A tiny, very old house with outdoor seating in an enclosed courtyard, tucked in an alley way. Complete with glowing gas lights. Went back the next day for brunch the next day. The egg dishes were excellent, farm fresh eggs served perfectly cooked. My son had a lamb ragu over polenta that was as good as it comes. Welcome to Chez Nous. Whether you sit outside in the courtyard, or inside this tiny 2-story house, there really is not a bad seat in the house. Go after dark for a romantic setting: the glow of the candlelight and the dark wood is really top notch. Or, sit at the long community table in the courtyard for a more social experience. In either place, a bottle of wine from the well-curated wine list should be mandatory. The food is very French (pro tip: read the second line of each dish on the menu for the English version) but always well executed. Just 2 starters, 2 mains and then 2 desserts. I've never been disappointed even if the small menu forced me to try something out of my comfort zone. This is an absolute gem. Possibly my favorite restaurant in the world. Located in a little back alley, in a charming little house. There's outdoor seating, rustic interiors and my favorite, a little patio table for two. The menu changes daily and is a choice of 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts. It's all very french rustic cooking, and utterly delicious. The staff is wonderful. I particularly like their wine-list, have had a nice Sancerre and a fantastic Albarino the times I've been. I am obsessed! This place was on my list of must go to. We saved it for the very last place so we could go all out. It's hidden down an ally which makes it so much fun to go to, especially while you're on vacation dreaming. We went for lunch so it wasn't busy. We were seated upstairs and our server was awesome. This place hand writes their menu everyday. Never the same menu! We ended up eating pork loin with celeriac puree and galric sauce and flounder with mussel and cider sauce. Appetizer choices were soppressata toast with gruyere or sautéed mushrooms with a fried egg. Dessert was with a chocolate pot de creme or a cheese parfait with fruit and cream. I am a classically trained chef and I went to Chez Nous on a recommendation of a colleague. I can't say that anything I ate was done poorly or tasted bad but it was not as good as the hype. I can say that the wine list, ambience and service were fantastic. The food left me wanting. If you're only going to offer six dishes a night, you'd better knock my socks off. This place was amazing, I was wow'd by the experience. They only had two options, which actually helps with your decision making and makes you focus more on the company and experience of the dinner. Their menu is different everyday, the Chef writes the menu down, so you get a copy of his handwritten menu. We went on October 26th. For being gluten free the menu was actually easy to work with, which I was pleasantly surprised seeing as the limited options. I chose to get the quail with grapes as my appetizer and the grilled swordfish with tomato purée. Everything was so delicious and mouthwatering. I will be back if I go to Charleston again. read more

We met at least 5 people in Charleston who raved about Chez Nous the day of our arrival, proclaiming it their favorite restaurant in the city. I was feeling pretty damn pleased with myself, because I had reserved a table weeks ago for dinner that evening. Inside we were escorted to a table for two very close to the table for four next to us and next to the next etc etc. I've encountered this type of seating a few times and am never wild for it, but I have to say this was the tightest seating I've ever experienced. And in a small room. I couldn't even fit between our table and the table for 4 next to us, without sending their utensils flying. Luckily my husband is Jack Sprat, so he could (barely) make it to the long bench, while I settled in to a not substantial and wobbly chair. No private conversation could be had, so we saved any deep conversation for another time. I was prepared for the limited menu, as I'd read about Chez Nous' approach and it appealed to me, as quality should supersede quantity. The evening we dined, the appetizer choices were crispy pork trotter salad or steamed clams. If you don't know pork trotter...that's another term for pigs' feet. I can't imagine that a huge number of people are itching for anything made with pigs' feet, but my parents did eat them when I was growing up. I just couldn't. So that left me with steamed clams, which I typically LOVE. But for $16 I received eleven very tiny clams in a DELICIOUS broth, but with clam meat that totaled maybe 3 T....and that's being generous. I live in a beach community and eat steamers a lot. These were very tasty but almost non-existent in terms of clam size. My husband ordered the trotter salad but found it bland and unappealing. Both entrees were fantastic ... my duck breast was AMAZING and my husband loved his snapper. My vanilla pots de creme was beautiful, but my husband found the eclairs lacking and only ate one. Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable about the food; the young man assisting with bussing, etc was a highlight of the night. Absolutely lovely and full of info. A very enthusiastic plus. Suggestion: Make sure that all wines on the list are accurately described. We chose a Bordeaux described as the grand vin, when in fact it was the third wine of the chateau. When brought to the table my husband sent it back, but the waitress insisted it was the grand vin , only the label had changed since the last vintage, for bottles distributed in the U.S. This was incorrect info. We enjoyed the wine and the price was fine, but it was not a correct representation of the wine, which is important. I learned toward the end of the night that there is a community table on the patio, where walk-ins can sometimes be seated. Thought that was a cool idea. To me that would be more pleasant than sitting way too close to your neighbor when trying to have a romantic dinner. Genius idea to accommodate guests without reservations. Chez Nous is very popular and I'm sure is deserving of its accolades. Our experience was impacted by the appetizer course, the seating/comfort and the wine misinformation. If you like a small space with a limited menu and gifted cooking (that we did experience), go for it. read more

Found this place on a list of Charleston restaurants, and indeed the ambience is very French. However, I thought the food overpriced ($40 for a pork chop), and the menu du jour a bit lacking. Even in France, there are more than 2 options on a menu such as this one. Nice place, but seems to take itself too seriously. Also, the host should know to seat a pregnant woman in a chair that has a back to it- not comfortable seating. read more

That being said, I'm throwing my $0.02 into the bucket of change. Food, atmosphere, wine list are all amazing, hands-down. Some of the best food I've eaten in Charleston or elsewhere. The menu changes daily, so a review of what we had isn't really all that helpful, aside to say that everything was prepared fresh, paired excellently, and obviously was made with attention to detail and care. I could not ask for more. The atmosphere really sets it apart from other eateries. Small, intimate, it is immediately apparent that Chez Nous is set in a converted historic home, with little touches of French bistro decor for accents.
