This place is so adorable! It is cozy, comfortable and chic! I was eyeing this restaurant for a while now when walking by it. It really reminded me of a Parisian place. I invited my husband who is a foodie for a lunch date and when we walked in we both said that this place reminded us of a French restaurant in Palo Alto and boom we see chef Maxim smiling and I say Wow, we were just talking about your Palo Alto restaurant and he said he closed it and works here now! We knew we were in good hands! Chef Maxim will greet you personally and call you a mademoiselle! He will suggest wine or champagne and his knowledge of food is amazing! I started with a glass of Brut Vouvray Blanc de Chenin. So delicious! French baguette was served right away with some butter, salt and pepper. Escargot was our appetizer and we shared Croque Monsieur. The food was flavorful, tasteful and authentic. The presentation was simple and chic at the same time. The buttery flavor with garlic and herbs in Escargot with French delicious bread and tasteful and hearty escargot...so so good! I loved how hospitable the chef Philip and Maxim are! They greet each guest and you feel like visiting a very friendly French place. I have been to Paris and service was not as friendly there. I guess Chef Philip and Maxim practice French hospitality and not Parisian one! They are warm, kind and present each dish in French! I was so elated! I am a terrible husband, I always forget our wedding anniversary in June So I make it up to her by taking her out to dinner in July. In Paris, This year was different. We can't travel so I had to do it right. Chez Philippe's service was over the top. Very attentive and accommodating. We spilt three dishes and dessert. We could hear the accordions around Jardin de Luxembourg while eating the French onion soup. The salad and steak were excellent. You could cut the steak with a butter knife. We tried the tarte for dessert. Excellent. You could taste the apples and cinnamon and ice cream all together. Ok the view on Santa Cruz Ave was not the top of the Eiffel Tower or Montparnasse, but everything else was perfect and I don't think the owner came out to check on us there. read more

Full disclosure... I'm French, but like any expatriates I'm very critical of French restaurant because I know what is authentic and what is not... The restaurant itself is very cute, nice atmosphere. Good service, the menu is "simple" but everything seems legit and simple is most of the time better! I was so happy to be able to get a Monaco, which is a mix of beer lemonade and grenadine... that made my day! We order the "plat du jour" salmon with back peppers sauce and steak with échalotes and fries. It was great very very tasty, the right amount of food as well, and sauce to make sure you can use the delicious bread they served you at the beginning to "sauce" everything... The fries were perfect!!! The spinach.... With cream like it supposed to be eaten, not in salad ;-)! It was a nice lunch, and you can be sure I will be back to taste more of the menu! It was our first time here, and it was wonderful. We had a reservation and were promptly seated up front in a secluded area. Yes the window looks out to the street, but that doesn't interfere with the quaint, and quiet vibe. The food was decadent yet not overfilling which left my fiance and I satisfied. The flavors were just right on each dish. It's rare we go out and I can't find something to complain about (I tend to be the pickier one). Service was lovely and not overbearing. TLDR: Duck Confit, FREE French Bread! and the haricot verts?? There is nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, better than eating freshly baked bread with some smooth room-temp butter. The Hong Kong peeps like their pineapple bun with stone-cold butter. That is NASTY. The butter is hard to spread and tears up the bread inside, leaving mushy track marks all over the place. And then when you eat it... you realize you are eating a cold butter wafer. YUM. No... I want bread fresh from the oven, a little hot on the crust so it will melt the butter evenly, while warm and fluffy on the inside. Give me a small ramekin of room-temperature butter, so I can smoothly EFFORTLESSLY glide the butter over the bread slice, letting it oooooze into the crooks and pores of that gluten. And when I bite into it, I want to hear that satisfying crunch, the spray of little crust bits flying all over the place. I want to taste, not the butter, but the creaminess and slightly saltiness. I want to smell that warm inviting buttery aroma. If you want that experience, if you never had that wonderful experience, please come to Chez Philippe. I'm happy that this place, while nestled amid the yuppiness of downtown Los Gatos, doesn't cater to that pretentiousness. Nowadays, you get NOTHING for free. You want vegetables? ORDER it. You want bread? ORDER it. But here, that wonderful bread experience comes free. When you order your main meal, it COMES with vegetables and often a starch. No ordering JUST the protein and then everything else! What a concept! But because we wanted to appear appreciative, my wife ordered a Kir... a french version of a cocktail. And like all things french, it's fruit and wine. My wife isn't much of a wine drinker. It came in a glass, was yellow, had a bit of foam, and smelled like beer. She drank it. Huh, it tasted like beer too. Weird wine! But after the first sip, the waitress immediately came to our table and apologized. It WAS beer! So in addition to the beer (FREE!), she had brought over the real Kir, in a wine glass, that still smelled like beer to me. Upon first sip, she could only taste the wine, but as the meal went on, she said (quite loudly) that she could taste more and more of the fruitiness. It might be because her senses were sharpened by the delicious food, or more likely because she had downed the glass of beer AND half the cocktail. My wife was getting pretty buzzed. We also ordered the french onion soup, and believe me, it was definitely different than AMERICAN french onion soup. For one... not so much cheese! (Yay). For two, they put 2 crostinis on top, which soaked up the soup, and was delicious! Three, it didn't taste like someone poured a vat of salt into an onion water mixture. The lovely almost drunk spouse had the sous vide salmon, over a bed of spinach, served with wild rice and green beans. As expected of a sous vide, the salmon was very moist and plump, and it REALLY tasted like Salmon. I think my wife would have preferred it to be finished with a nice sear at the end, but it was still good. Get it if you want to really TASTE the salmon. The sober me ordered duck confit over a bed of applesauce, some potatoes and the same green beans. I really liked the duck. It might have been sous vide as well, but unlike the salmon, was definitely pan-seared to make the skin have some flavor. But it was literally falling off the bone tender. I didn't need a knife at all to eat it. I didn't care much for the applesauce... reminded me too much of grade school, and unfortunately the potatoes were soaked in it, so I couldn't taste much of that either. I do want to take a MO to comment on the green beans (haricot verts) though. Unlike some of those "fancy" steakhouses (the ones that charge you for these things!), these weren't fibrous, nor crunchy, nor "snappy". I hate those things. Tastes almost raw! These lovely darlings were drenched in butter and garlic, and were soft and didn't taste like green beans at all. I HATE the taste of green beans, but I devoured all of these on my plate. They were THAT good. We wanted to finish the night with a lovely dessert, but the pie was all out, and their mousse is the thick dense fudgy kind. No thanks! All in all, a wine, an app, and 2 full dinners, cost us a hair over $100. It's actually not that bad for a French restaurant in Los Gatos. I can't talk about the authenticity of the French cuisine, but make some reservations, and give this charming place a try! We were even thanked by the chef himself when we left! I would definitely come back, just for that delicious bread again. read more

Chez Philippe is the latest addition to the Los Gatos dining scene, and it's a real gem. A French born, classically trained, and highly experienced restauranteur, Philippe Leroy has gone to great lengths to make his namesake restaurant as authentically French as possible. The country French decor is perfect for relaxing in either of the two indoor dining rooms. There's also a unique four seat counter facing the kitchen where adventurous diners can watch the goings on while enjoying whatever the chef decides to serve that day. The peaceful outdoor courtyard in the back (which is where we were seated) is shaded by colorful umbrellas and grape vines. My wife and I made reservations for lunch on the day after their grand opening. Our French server greeted us warmly and made us feel welcome from the very beginning. Philippe was constantly making the rounds, offering suggestions, delivering food, and checking in. He seemed anxious to please and justifiably proud of his new business. We started with a bottle of Muscadet, a dry white wine from the Loire Valley which is rarely seen on the menu in California restaurants. It pared nicely with my wife's classic Moules Frites (mussels in white wine accompanied by a gargantuan order of fries) and my Duck Confit Salad (perfectly cooked shredded duck with greens, turkey bacon, potatoes, and a light Dijon mustard dressing) which I thoroughly enjoyed. A fresh, warm, sliced baguette accompanied our meals. We finished by sharing a refreshing lemon sorbet. This authentic and unpretentious French bistro is destined to be one of our favorite restaurants. We'll definitely go back soon to experience Philippe's weekend brunch and dinner. read more

We made it for bastille day. Which was fun. Lots of fun music and specials. We did the special menu and it was great. The escargot were fresh and delightful. The French onion soup was made to perfection. The mussels were fresh and with a wonderful sauce. Then the chicken was moist and flavorful. They are under a soft opening so there are many many waitstaff issues and ordering issues but I am confident they will work it out. Food is worth it. We will try again soon. read more

Absolutely fabulous!! beautiful interior, cozy but not cramped. lots of typical French bistro fare. We loved the escargot. We both had the evening specials, my friend had the scallops and I was lucky enough to pick the cassoulet. it was amazing, surely the best I've ever had and I have a chef friend who prides himself on his cassoulet. the sausage with a touch of pastis (I guessed fennel) was on point. Service was great too. I think it's a fairly new place and I will be visiting my friend who live in the area again soon, and I hope to convince them to return!! read more

This was the second time eating at Chez Philippe and it was just as good as the first . The ambiance is a very intimate cozy French vibe. There is limited seating so be sure to make a reservation . The owner/chef Philippe and his wife both have a presence and make a point to greet each table . The last visit here I had the coQ a vin and last night the Cassoulet. Both fantastic choices giving you a feeling of a well done authentic French meal . Great wine choices that complement your meal. There is no cocktail menu but with the great wine options there is no need . I only wish they stayed open later but considering the attention to detail to all of the fresh meal Options I can see why it may not be feasible . It was my birthday and they treated me to a dressed up table with balloons and pom poms in their beautiful patio outside. Picture yourself in a French country patio. We wanted a nearby place to celebrate out 51'st. anniversary. We usually go to La Foret in Almaden Valley but thought we would try a local place. After reading the reviews I was expecting a five star experience. Sadly it fell short. The wife's house salad was about as basic as you can get. Mixed greens with a very plane oil and vinegar. (Needed more vinegar). My Onion soup was excellent. Hearty beef broth with lots of cheese on top and bread (baked on premises), and soft butter was great with the soup. She had the ratatouille and I had mussels. Never having had ratatouille she had nothing to compare it to but enjoyed it . My mussels were ok but nothing to write home about. But a very generous portion. I should have stuck with my first choice of salmon. We skipped dessert. Service was fast but we did not feel rushed. But, five stars to the hostess who seated us even though we arrived a day before our reservation date. Yes a day early! My screwup. Next time we will stick with La Foret. read more

My wife and I had a reservation for 7:30 on New Year's Eve. We showed up about 10 minutes early. The small entrance was packed with people. We checked in with the hostess and asked how behind they were running. She said about 15 to 20 minutes. Half hour later, a couple walked in. I heard them say they had a reservation for 8:00. They were seated almost instantly. This happened a couple more times. At 8:30, one hour after the reservation time, I asked how likely it would be to get seated in the next 30 minutes. The hostess looked around and said "I doubt it..." so we left and ate somewhere else. I would have been far more happy if they told me when I walked in that they had over booked and I would not get a table, instead of wasting over an hour of my time, standing in the entryway. I have eaten here a couple times. The food was very good. The low rating is for the lack of customer service. read more

We had a nice dinner here at Chez Philippe. Fun French atmosphere and generally enjoyed the dinner. French onion soup was very tasty and the house salad was more than decent. The cassoulet was very good but I would expect it to be for $48. Quite high in price but they are in Los Gatos. The bavette steaks our dinner companions had were tasty except they complained that the string beans were way overcooked and the French fries were kind of limp which I agreed with after having a few. Desserts was very enjoyable however. Service started out very well but after the entrees were served the interaction with the server...owner I presume ..fell by the wayside. No one checked on how the entrees were . Even when the plates were picked up not a word. Our dinner companion asked about dessert and they were brought out and that was it. We sat for the longest time with empty dessert dishes in front of us. Had to flag down one of the young ladies for the check. The owner brought the check and not even a thank you expressed and the dessert dishes still sat there. We paid the young girl after waiving her down so we could pay and leave. Loving all these new restaurants popping up in downtown LG. Chez Phillipe is a nice addition. They have a beautiful outdoor seating patio area and a cute area that would be perfect for private parties. There's parking in the lot in the back but you have to walk all the way around to the front to get in. One gripe about the outdoor seating is the tree and flowers that provide beautiful coverage above, but cause constant pollen and leaves to fall in your drinks and food while you eat. I'd probably eat indoors next time. French bread was delicious with the butter. Escargot was well cooked. Not rubbery or weird tasting. Easy to eat. I like how their wine is well priced. Reasonable prices. First time trying a red sancerre, which was surprisingly good. Moules frites was good, but some of the mussels had quite a lot of sand in them. Favorite dish was the steak frites. Steak came out perfectly cooked medium rare. Juicy and tender. Special cassoulet was good as well, tasted pretty clean. Special orange glazed salmon was also good with the glaze not being overpowering. As others have stated, it's pretty pricey but a nice place to eat once in awhile. read more

Went to lunch here with two other people yesterday and was thoroughly unimpressed. While my nicoise salad tasted fine, the amount of salmon that they gave was really small and certainly not worth the $24. The other people I was dining with actually laughed when we all saw how small it was. Another person had the L'American sandwich that was literally just a burger patty on a baguette with fries... there was no tomatoes, lettuce, and certainly not enough ketchup or other condiments to provide any flavor. The service was also a bit judge-y, but I suppose it's just very French. All in all, extremely overpriced for what they give you and there are significantly better places in downtown LG to eat at. Chez Philippe has potential to be one, but for now, it is just one of those shiny new places that needs to figure it self out. Reservation system of emailing back and forth is insane. We made our reservation early in the day, but when we arrive in a partially occupied restaurant, we had only a choice of one preselected table and could not change because all the other empty tables were "reserved". Someone is running a pretty awkward system there. This whole matter did taint our visit some. The dinner menu is very limited. 6 entrees only. Typical for a small neighborhood restaurant in France, but not in California. They got to figure this out, combine with lunch menu maybe. They are short of knowledge servers for a French bistro. The food. The pate appetizer tasted like scooped out of a can. No presentation. Steak tartare was bland also with no presentation. Chopped meat on a plate. Try the one at Left Bank. The duck confit salad was good though. The fresh baguette and wine were the only standouts of the evening. We will try it again ...... in a year or so. read more
