Classic Beignets with dark chocolate and salted caramel sauces

I had bookmarked Épernay Bistro for a while, and finally came here for dinner with my husband on Wednesday. We came here a couple of times when it was still Billy's Boston Chowder House. The brick walls and blackboards looked familiar. There's still a long table in the middle. With the new chairs and tablecloths, the place looked more classy than before. The floating shelves at the top of the walls were all lined with wine bottles. There're some gigantic bottles towards the back as well. It's quite a nice place to have a quiet, intimate dinner with the causal, yet upscale vibe. There're about eight tables (1-2 persons@) while we're there, and service was attentive, despite having only one server. For the $80 dinner for 2 special, we got to pick one item from each of the first two selections to share, two entrees, and one beignet each. We also added a beet salad to share, and my husband had the wine pairing. For our first course, the two baked oysters were cheesy and rich. It would be better if they were bigger, though. Our second course, the caramelized onion soup was perfectly prepared, one of the best I had ever had. The beet salad was refreshing, and the dressing was so tasty that it made arugula tasted good. I had the sole as my entree; it was cooked well, light and delicious. I took a bite of my husband's slow braised short ribs; it was tender and flavorful. The beignets were delightful, and paired really well with the dark chocolate and salted caramel sauce. I really appreciated that all their hot dishes came out really hot. Overall, it was a really enjoyable dinner. Would be back to have the onion soup again and try other items on the menu.

We tried Epernay Bistro for the first time last week and tried their $80 Four Courses for Two menu (menu shown). We added a beet salad to augment the meal. We also added one $45 wine pairing. We chose the baked oysters to start. The seasoning and taste was good, but the oysters themselves were incredibly tiny, which was disappointing. Normally, it's two for $12, and if we had ordered these for $12, it would have been even more disappointing. I didn't know oysters came this small! Next was the French onion soup, which was very good. Cheesy, lots of onion, flavorful, satisfying piece of bread under the cheese. Perfectly fine portion size to share. And serve hot, which was great. The beet salad we added ($16) was very good too from a seasoning standpoint and it was a good size to share. Just nice to have some vegetables to go with the food since we opted for soup from the featured menu. For the main course, my wife had the sole, which she enjoyed very much, and I had the Beef bourguignon, which was also great. Good size portions for both, taste spot on, also served delightfully hot. Finally we had the beignets, which were smaller, but tasted great and the sauces were more than enough to drench your beignets and still have extra to eat alone if you're so inclined. We were! The wine pairings were all good, and while I'm sure the port would have gone well with the dessert, I opted for the Sauternes wine, which was pleasantly sweet yet still refreshing and not overly sweet/"thick" like port can be. Service was excellent. Even though there was only one server for everyone, we never felt it was lacking in any way. The decor was pleasant and comfortable as well. So all in all, it was a very pleasant dining experience with the tiny oysters being the sole disappointment. Still, we found the value overall quite good for a high level French dinner and we'd be happy to come back again.

Came here for dinner on valentines weekend and it was a great choice! The inside is super cute and vibey. We did the dinner for 2 for $40 pp, which includes the baked oyster, French onion soup, risotto, beef bourguignon, and beignets which I thought was a really good deal. My favorite tho was definitely the smoked salmon soup. So much flavor and just tasted sooo good, you have to try it! The risotto was really tasty too. Also the beignets came out warm and were fried to the perfect fryness and exceeded my expectations. Overall would definitely recommend as a place to celebrate a special occasion, or just go out for a nice meal!

Second visit here. Spot on! Great service. Great ambience. We left somewhere else to come here! So glad we did!

Our server was named Yvonne. It's located on a quiet small street. Parking is a bit difficult. It wasn't busy in the morning. It's great for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. I've always enjoyed their special menu. We ordered what they called Epernay burger, which has cult. Ground beef that's made from Patty, gruyere and caramelized, onions, mushrooms, arugula, and house aioli and I got the truffles fries.(5/5) We've also ordered the Frites au voef bourguignon and we were longing for some beef. The mushroom short ribs are delicious.3.5/5 Our soup we got the soupe a loignin French onion soup comete melted into the bread, well-made.4/5 Lastly, we got escargot which is reasonably priced snails with butter

We had the most lovely and amazing meal and drinks at Épernay! We have had the Moules & Frites, French onion soup and baked Brie! The Moules are out of this world and better than any and ALL the ones we have had in France! The baked Brie was amazing! As new residents to Los Gatos we tried this hidden gem on Sunday and then had to return for more deliciousness the following Thursday! The owners and hosts, Adam & Diovanni are charming and will cater to your every need. We are hooked and you will be as well once you enter their taste of France here in Los Gatos! Can't wait to head back and continue our epicurean journey back to France! Thank you! ( btw... loved the Kir Royale & Champagne! ;-)

You will forget to take the photo first! Soo good!

We came here for a date night and loved the food, but a bit dismayed by the service. Small narrow restaurant but the tables are spaced out in a way where we had ample of privacy for our date. The most disappointing part of this place was the service. The waitress did not seem interested at all in serving us, and when she finally did come by would put on THE fakest smile. When you have $500 caviar on the menu (not that we ordered it...) the service better sweep you off your feet! Regardless, we enjoyed the food and drinks. I liked my red wine (though there aren't too many options for red wine by the glass), and appreciated that they offer half glass additional pours, so you can sample various wines within a more reasonable budget. The salmon pate was a nice appetizer to start with, easily spreadable. My husband loved his french onion soup which had ample amounts of melted cheese on top for me to steal. We also had the burger which was cooked to perfection and very juicy. I absolutely loved my Sole fish dish. I am very critical about fish being too thin or too dry etc, but this was a decent sized super juicy cut.

Glad I got to cross Épernay Bistro off my list of places to try, and it was a huge plus that the overall experience was delightful. My husband and I were on a double date with our friends, so I appreciated the restaurant's intimate ambiance. This place was the most authentic when it came to service. We were at dinner for nearly 3 hours, which reminded me of Paris. The food took a long time to be prepared, and I felt that the wait staff was not as attentive. As long as you're not in a rush, champagne it up and enjoy hearty conversations at your table while waiting a while for your orders. We ordered a couple of appetizers including a charcuterie board and bacon wrapped dates stuffed with cheese. My favorite among the apps was their selection of cheeses. They tasted fresh and had very distinct flavors and textures: a type of hard cheese, a semi-soft like a manchego, a tart and creamy one like goat cheese, maybe a sharp cheddar?, and definitely a soft brie-like cheese. The entrees were fantastic. 3 out of the 4 of us got a beef bourguignon, and I got the filet. The beef bourguignon was incredibly tender, but I did think it could've used a little more salt. My filet, however, was excellent with every bite. The meat was cooked to medium rare perfection, and I enjoyed the other elements on my dish, such as the onions and potato 3-cheese puff pastry. Lastly, we had a few desserts to share. Épernay's chocolate mousse was decadent. It was thick and dense like brownie batter. Their beignets, which were like little pillows, were fine.

Excellent Boullabaise with fish, scallops, mussels. We had the dates and cheese appetizer and the potatoes with creme and caviar. Mom had the sole plate and hisband had the beef bourgonone with mushrooms. Great French wine to pair

Amazing French dining experience! Everything was great, from service to the food. I had scallops for appetizer (Coquilles Saint-Jacques), the Sole Sautée for and the Raspberry Custard Napoleon. They were all super delicious with generous portions. If you enjoy authentic French cuisine, this place is a must!

If you're craving French cuisine, this place will satisfy your palate. The restaurant is quiet and cozy--perfect for a date night--but perhaps a bit too subdued for a lively dinner with friends. The cocktail selection was limited, so we opted for a bottle of Bordeaux, which turned out to be pleasantly smooth. Every dish we tried was delicious, with the duck being the standout. Our waitress was friendly, though she didn't offer any recommendations or mention any specials. We were slightly disappointed that there wasn't a complimentary dessert for the birthday girl, but the beignets were an excellent sweet ending to the meal.

I'd been following them on instagram eagerly awaiting their opening, so when opening week finally came, I rushed in. They were still in sort of a soft opening phase trying to figure out what the hours would be, but I was thrilled to have them open a little bit earlier on a Sunday so we could enjoy some post hike bubbles. When we went in they had two different flight options of three champagnes. We opted for one of each to share, so that way we could try all of the open bottles. In addition to the flights they have champagne by the glass, bottle, and half bottle, as well as a still red, white, and rose, and a beer. They also have a few n/a options and some snacks and light bites. Mel helped us the entire time and was very fun to chat with! A lot of the time champagne can feel unapproachable, and that was not at all the case here. The whole experience was very fun and casual, but in a beautifully upscale space. Whether you're a champagne expert or have never tried it, this is a great spot to come.

I want to be transparent at the outset: we ultimately did not visit, so this review is not about…read morethe Champagne, the space, or the in-person experience. It is specifically about the reservation handling and customer service we experienced. My partner and I recently moved to the Bay Area and enjoy exploring restaurants, wine, and tasting experiences. Our plan for Thursday, August 13, was to attend the San Francisco Champagne Society Happy Hour at 6:00 PM and then go to our confirmed 8:00 PM dinner at Lazy Bear. Our Lazy Bear reservation was correctly booked for August 13. My partner genuinely believed she had also selected August 13 when booking SFCS through Tock, but the completed reservation and reminder emails showed Wednesday, August 12. We do not know whether the date reset during booking or we simply made a selection error. Either way, we acknowledge that we failed to notice the date shown in those two emails and consequently missed the reservation. The next day, as soon as we discovered the problem, we contacted the owner. We did not request a cash refund. We asked whether our prepaid $102.90 Happy Hour reservation could be moved to an available time that day, either 5:00 or 6:00 PM. The owner explained that he had held two seats, prepared the space, and created a menu for the missed reservation. I understand that resources may have been used and that the original booking was designated nonrefundable. However, the only exception initially offered was an upgrade to a $125-per-person experience. The total would be $334.06, with our original $102.90 credited, requiring us to pay an additional $231.16. The first time offered was 7:00 PM, which would not work because of our 8:00 PM dinner. The owner later offered 5:30 PM under the same upgrade condition. Trying to reach a reasonable compromise, we proposed using our original payment for the same Happy Hour experience that day and separately purchasing a $75 or $125 experience that weekend. We explained that we are Champagne enthusiasts, had just moved here, and wanted to explore the different experiences step by step and potentially become repeat customers. The owner's final offer was that we prepay a completely new $125-per-person reservation for any date that month before a 3:00 PM deadline. Only if we made that new purchase--approximately $334.06--would he allow us to attend the previously paid Happy Hour at 5:00 PM that day. He also stated that we could dispute the charge and might win, that Tock's coverage would still pay him, and that we would then be unable to make any future reservations at his establishment. I understand that a business may enforce a nonrefundable no-show policy. If the answer had simply been a polite "no," I would have been disappointed but would have understood. What created such a negative impression was making a substantial, time-limited additional purchase the condition for any accommodation, even after we offered to purchase another experience separately that weekend. It felt less like a gesture of hospitality or a good-faith attempt to resolve an honest mistake and more like using the mistake as leverage to secure an immediate additional sale. The warning that a billing dispute would result in being barred from future reservations made the interaction feel even more adversarial. This was not about the $102.90 or an unwillingness to pay $125 per person. We were already prepared to make another paid reservation. It was about the principle involved and the way the situation was handled. Based solely on this customer-service experience, we decided not to visit or make any future reservations. Again, I cannot evaluate the Champagne or the on-site experience; this review concerns only the reservation process and the owner's handling of the issue.

My partner decided to go with a glass of the Brut Rose whilst I chose the tasting flight (5 wines for $40). All of the wines here are expertly made and of a beautiful style. I can't say there wasn't a wine here that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. The Brut Rose is a beautiful champagne style rose. The Rose of Pinot Noir was also excellent. A fantastic light yet flavorful wine. The chardonnay was also excellent and of a beautiful style with just a touch of oak. Next was their Passetoutgrain, which is a blend of gamay noir and pinot noir. Also in the tasting were two pinot noirs, the base pinot noir and the El Bec. Both were beautiful expressions of pinot noir. Wonderful balance of fruit, earth and spice. Finally, we had to try the Brut Cuvee, which is only offered by the glass. A truly beautiful wine reminiscent of the Champagne region. Service was from a couple of friendly and very knowledgeable attendants. The glassware here is beautiful and perfect for the wine served. The wines were all served at the proper temperature. And the pours were of a generous volume such that you could fully experience the wines.
