I will remove this review if my second meeting with Dr Chi goes smoother. As for now I'm left feeling extremely hurt, isolated, and frustrated. Not to mention I'm in severe pain. For 2 years I've been dealing with an intense neck pain on the right side. It causes me to adjust my neck hundreds and hundreds of times a day. The stiffness and soreness is unbearable. After getting mri's and x rays, we found out that u had nerve damage in my neck, and that my constant adjusting for years has led to spinal degeneration. I was sent to a dentist for dental x rays and an exam. I was delighted actually to find out that my wisdom teeth was likely the root cause! Two years of searching, countless x rays , medications, mri's, different pain mgmt doctors . My entire life was put on hold because I can't find any comfort. I can't even go out with friends because I can't sit comfortably or stop adjusting. Today I was so excited when sent to dr chi for extraction. I was told it would be removed same day, after waiting about 5 hours. When seeing Dr chi I was completely blown off and talked down to. 2025 Update: Nearly two years after my terrible experience with Dr. Chi, I had my wisdom teeth removed by a far better surgeon last month. During the initial exam, we discovered Dr. Chi had left a tooth root in my gums from th previous extraction without telling me--despite charging full price. Dr. Chi's initial treatment was to remove a cracked molar (which he did) and then have a multi stage approach to my wisdom teeth extractions involving 2-3 procedures in total. After my initial exam witg my new surgeon and told him Chi's plan, he completely disagreed with Chi's approach and removed all 4 teeth plus the leftover root from Dr Chi without issue. The procedure was smoother, with no side effects and minimal pain, and I was back at work within a couple days. Dr. Chi is one of the most incompetent doctors I've ever encountered. I was 18 years old when I was referred to Tony T. Chi back in 2008-2009. I went to get my wisdom teeth removed. He did not allow anyone to come in the room with me. When he came in he just stared at my breast area and insisted that I needed to go under full anesthesia. A female nurse came and tried to convince me and an IV was started. When I woke up my gown was all the way down and my bra was unhooked. I was left top less and exposed. I tried to get up and asked the female nurse why I felt the way I did and I was shushed and she denied removing my bra. Please if you are a woman and especially an under age girl do not go here. I was sent here for my son's wisdom teeth removal due to his complex teeth . Of course I went on yelp to look at reviews. I read some reviews and I got a little scared . Knowing my Dentist I trusted her and I knew she was gonna refer me to a good Doctor. When I got there the place is really clean and nice . Yeah it's not modern but it was nice and clean . I'm sure there rent there is expensive because it's close to the ocean . They took 3D X-rays before they started and explained to me options . Dr. Chi was super nice and so knowledgeable, I can't believe anyone would say otherwise. They did my son's procedure and I can't believe they even did PRP injection on him to promote healing . My son the next day wasn't even complaining about pain and his one wisdom tooth was sideways ! If you are worried about coming here because of the 1 star reviews, just know Dr. Chi is great! I had to get all 4 wisdom teeth out (2 were impacted). I, too, was worried as I read all the reviews. But I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt! Especially since my dentist referred me to him. His bed-side manners are AMAZING and he is very sweet, it made me feel so comfortable. The day of, I chose local anesthesia he asked if I was sure and I said yes (I had my first root canal at 10 lol). It only took him maybe 25 min to get all the teeth out after being numbed up. He said I did amazing as I didn't squirm or get scared haha. He checked on me throughout the procedure and asked if I felt any pain. Anytime I said I could feel it, he would add more anesthesia to make me comfortable. Today, I got my stitches out. He said everything was going well and I made sure I was on top of the amoxicillin and ibuprofen I was prescribed. My anxiety made me overthink I had dry socket, but he checked and said I was doing well. He also made time to tell me that I was a great patient and I let him know he did great as well. Yes, the office looks dated. Yes his instruments do as well. But he is an amazing oral surgeon and he is very quick and clean with his process. Two very trendy fish tanks were what I saw in the waiting room. Despite being a traditional-style medical chair, the chair I sat on was very clean. After discussing my gum lesions with Dr. Chi, I concluded that this chair must have been used by thousands of patients. I am confident that I will be content, just like every other patient who has ever sat in this chair. Indeed, Dr. Chi successfully removed and sutured my lesion within a short amount of time. As an elderly man, I was very nervous. I had read all the positive and negative reviews and had previously consulted with two doctors before going. I visited his office for the first time about a week ago, during my experience, all of his staffs were courteous. Don't worry about a few negative reviews, you'll be aware once you're there. I should have updated this review years ago. Do NOT take your young daughter's here, no exceptions. The Dr made my daughter so uncomfortable talking about her body and weight. On top of that he refused to allow me in the room. My daughter was put under for a basic wisdom tooth extraction. There was no need for that and refusing parent supervision of a child that is unconscious is inappropriate. On top of that he extracted the wrong tooth! Dr. Chi knows what he's doing! I had a wisdom tooth extracted. Because it was fully erupted and the root had no complicated entanglements, I opted for Novocaine rather than being put under. After the injections, I was left in the chair for 40 minutes - I started to feel nervous wondering if the numbness was going to start to wear off before he returned! But not to worry. He came back, poked around with a needle - no pain - and had the tooth pulled in 5 minutes. I don't know what he uses for Novocaine but my mouth did little swelling and the numbness disappeared completely in less than 2 hours. I took one Advil but I needn't have. He gave me a prescription for Ibuprofen - not used! And the hole where my tooth was healed nicely within the week. read more

I went to Dr. Chi's Oral and Maxillofacial surgery because I was referred by my primary dentist to extract four of my wisdom teeth. Because I trusted my primary dentist, I didn't expect any problems with the referral. But I was wrong. When I drove to Dr. Chi, the dentist was not placed in the right neighborhood as it was by an abandoned motel and people who seemed off. Then when I entered, the whole place was very outdated, unclean, I mean even the fish tanks were not taken care of. My first thought was, "This place is so freakin sketchy man." Dr. Chi is a very nice person. However, when it was time for my surgery, the equipment such as the chair, tanks of anesthesia were so old-looking like it hasn't been changed in years. I didn't really care about how the place looked because I more so focused on my teeth. Also, when the surgery was done, one of the nurses was very rude and disrespectful because she was slapping my arm to wake me up instead of comforting and actually taking care of me since I got all four of my teeth taken out. It was very sad to see it happen because I've never met a nurse who would treat their patients like crap. It's not right. Post-surgery I was given two medications: A pain reliever, Tylenol and an antibiotic, amoxicillin. I took them at the right times. Didn't think so much about it. A week later, I went back to the dentist for a follow up, so he can also take out my stitches. The next day I started to feel unwell and coughed up yellow phlegm. I thought I was getting a cold but then the next day, I had a painful headache that felt so permanent, a fever of 100.5-101, lethargic, sore throat, and my phlegm turned green. I thought that maybe getting rest would do the trick and taking Nyquil. The day after I started to see these red dots appear on my body, as if I was getting an allergic reaction and I became even worse; I now had severe body ache, tiredness, shivers, confusion/delusion, my eyes started to burn and become droopy, I couldn't talk so much nor eat because my throat was so sore and scratchy, and my vision became blurry. I was rushed to the emergency room because I was feeling even worse, and this illness was spreading to my brain. After some blood work, I have been diagnosed with mononucleosis and I'm allergic to Amoxicillin which triggered the rash. I was told by my ER doctor that I most likely got this disease during my wisdom teeth removal. Now looking back, I noticed that as the dentist and nurses were prepping me for surgery, the tools to take out my wisdom teeth were not STERILE. I remember that it looked so rusty, out of color, and dirty like there was stuff on it. And when I came back to get my stitches, the tool wasn't in a bag. Dr. Chi just grabbed it from the counter, not caring if it was clean or not and used it in my mouth. The tool wasn't sterile because it was also fading in its color and dirty as if it hasn't been properly being taken care of. These tools were used in my mouth when it was used in other people's mouths. These tools should've been cleaned, sterile, new before placed in my mouth. But they weren't. I now have to live with Epstein-Barr-Virus for the REST OF MY LIFE. Do you know how traumatic, stressful, excruciating this is for me? This should've never happened because all of this could've been avoided by doing one simple task. This is not okay. This is not right. I am so angry, depressed, and forever traumatized by what was done to me. To just going to get my wisdom teeth removed to living with a lifetime contagious virus. Please, do not take yourself or anyone you know to Dr. Chi. Do your research before going to a dentist. I wish I could give 0 stars, I truly do. I have suffered from severe TMJ for over a decade, which is why I put off getting my wisdom teeth out for so long. I was recommended Dr Chi by a local dentist and its right around the corner from my apartment so I thought, why not. At my initial consult, I mentioned my TMJ and fear of it becoming an issue post surgery and Dr Chi kind of just brushed off the entire remark as if there could be absolutely nothing that would go wrong. Perhaps this was his way of calming my nerves, but I just felt ignored. On the day of surgery, I brought it up again and I asked him to please be gentle with my jaw and even to let me fully relax it myself before putting me under so that I knew it was aligned. He said he would wait, but instead tricked me and administered the anesthesia early against my wishes. All he said to address my concern was, "do you know how hard it is to break a jaw?" As I'm sure you could guess from how I'm writing this review, all did not go well. I could not open my mouth more than an inch for 2 weeks post surgery. Once I could open it enough to speak, I went back into his office to ask for help - if there was anything I could do to ease the excruciating pain and inability to use my mouth! He said time would be the only thing to help it and instead just shoved more ibuprofen and codeine at me. I have been to several dentists/oral surgeons/specialty doctors since this surgery in July 2018 and the only thing left to do to fix my jaw is extremely expensive surgery. There is no other remedy so instead I live with DAILY pain because my oral surgeon did not listen to my concerns. The TMJ Association says this on their website: "Be sure to discuss your jaw limitations with your doctor prior to surgery or a long dental appointment so he/she uses extreme caution. Anesthesia, often used during dental procedures, can affect mouth opening and damage the joint. If possible, avoid long dental appointments requiring an open mouth for more than 30 minutes." How is it possible a trained oral surgeon did not know these risks and advice ??? Couldn't he have chosen the local anesthetic route instead? Or given my jaw proper breaks? He took zero precautions and now my quality of life has dramatically decreased. If you have pre existing conditions or concerns, do not go here. read more

Yesterday arrived for a 2pm appt. After 30 minutes I checked with receptionist- Dr Chi wasn't event there! After 40 minutes I checked again and receptionist called Dr. Chi. She said "he'll be here in 5 minutes" Right, Dr Chi lied. After 50 minutes I told her I'll reschedule which I did. I got to my car & realized I forgot my X-ray and at this point decided I'm going to find another doctor. I went back in and asked for my X-ray, saw who I thought might be the doctor walking in. This was the worse Dental experience of my life. I'm in the Dental field myself as I was a Dental Tech in the United States Navy. The front desk staff was OK. But the assistants in the back were unwelcoming. The Dentist was quick and uninforming. His method of administering anesthesia was barbaric and unprofessional. My wife has been here twice to have wisdom teeth removed. While the good doctor is nice, I believe one word will sum this place up...UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!! Dr. Chi was an hour late the first time my wife went in for her 930 surgery. Which means she hadn't eaten, drank and got sick/dizzy because of it. Also, this place looks like it hasn't been updated/renovated since the 50's. Everything is old, rundown. Today she went in for her other teeth to be removed and same thing...Dr was not there on time...WTF! If you have a medical practice and charge hundreds of dollars to either us or our insurance company, the least you could do is get your ass out of bed and show the hell up ON TIME!!! The staff there is utterly useless too it seems. They weren't very warm/friendly and didn't seem to care that the Dr. was late. This is the last time I am letting my wife see this guy. I've got to admit that I have always had a fear of going to the dentist! Finally I decided to go and get my teeth fixed, however it was too late and I'm set to get dentures! My phone call and conversation with Jackie , the receptionist was very emotional. She made sure I was going to get the best quality care with them and assured me I was doing the right thing with my life. Taking this huge step for me was very frightful and facing my deep dark fear was going to mean a new start, a new beginning, a new smile but most importantly a new step for better health! My visit with Dr.Chi was very exciting. I was nervous but They made me feel calm and relaxed. The fishes in the waiting room put me in a better state of mind as I have fish at home . Dr. Chi suggested I have 13 teeth removed and I've got to say I was terrified however the day of the appointment I sat in the dentist chair and Dr. Chi and his team made me feel very calm! They had music playing, talked to me step by step and the next thing I knew I woke up in little to no pain! The next few days I was a bit soar but no pain. I went back to get the stitches removed and again, Dr. Chi worked his magic and I was out of the door with no pain! I'm going to get the rest of my teeth removed in a couple of weeks while I wait for my dentures to be made ! I will walk out of the dentist office a new me! I came in to extract my wisdom tooth because the pain was unbearable. The whole process of extracting my tooth took 20-30 minutes. I was not given anesthesia but I was given the numbing shot. However, the doctor did not wait for the numbing to take place. I even told the doctor I could feel what he's doing but he just kept going. I had a cracked tooth that was causing me pain. I had went to the dentist and of course they wanted me to see an oral surgeon but the one they have only comes to the office once a month. There was no way I was waiting so I just went with the first one who popped up in a google search, which was Dr. Chi. I called to make the appointment and they got me right in. I have no dental insurance so they told me the price to pull my upper #4 tooth was between $350-$400, at this point I would have paid anything. My appointment was at 3:30, I got in at 3:20, filled out some forms, and by 3:40 I was in the exam room. Dr Chi came in and introduced himself, he was extremely friendly, looked at my tooth, said he saw the problem and would get it taken out. About 5 minutes later I was moved to another room, was numbed up very well. He was gentle with the needle, he did tell me that the shots in the roof of the mouth would hurt and he was right. About 10 min later he came back( there was a teenage girl who had her wisdom teeth out coming out of sedation and was crying and then laughing so he and his assistant kept going back and forth) he asked several times if I felt anything and I kept saying no and about 2 minutes later the tooth was out. It's been 3 days and I have had no pain whatsoever. I would ignore the negative comments on here, no one was rude, no one tried to upsell me anything, nothing was rusty or looked 3rd world as someone stated in another post. Some of these reviews are rather dramatic. Honorary mentions go to the office, the staff, parking availability, cost of services, etc. - IF you pay attention to the negativity. But never once do these comments speak of Dr. Chi and the quality care you receive. That is because Dr. Chi IS caring, knowledgeable, professional, and knows what he's doing. The office staff has been nothing but kind to me, nurses are experienced and caring. If you need a wisdom tooth removed please do your research. After all, it is oral surgery. I can understand fear of being put to sleep but sedation is standard procedure and there are added fees involved. Prices aren't cheap, but they are fair. Would you rather pay less and receive sub standard care? Dr. Chi takes his time with his patients, and I for one am thankful and appreciative of his expertise. FYI for dental chickens... Dr. Tony Chi hurts! After repeatedly literally stabbing my mouth with the lidocaine needle I told him not to do it like that on the other side and his response was "I don't have control of the needle". Then he pressed it in super softly on my right side and gave a long drawn out sarcastic "is that better?" pretty much saying he was trying hurt me. I had 3 teeth extracted and the last one was infected but he just kept stabbing my mouth with the needle and then instantly resume with the drill and not even waiting, and pressing down on my jaw like he was drilling a wood board, then when it was too painful he said " I guess we will wait 5 minutes and see". This doctor is a quack and shouldn't be practicing dental work or medicine, if I could give zero stars I would, search for a better oral surgeon, he sucks and doesn't even take Medi-Cal it's not like your are even getting treated badly for free (which is what happens at most Medi-Cal offices) you actually have to pay for this treatment. read more

The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because of dr chi's kindness. I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed last week, and while i was about to go under general anethesia, my blood pressure was 72/41. I asked the assistant politely if that was too low for sedation, and all she said was "I mean like, yeah I don't know I guess... I mean this one girl had low blood pressure last time and it wasn't good," then I went under (how calming.. I'm an ER RN, i know what the hell im talking about). 3 days later, the pain was unbearable and I was still producing blood. I called concerned and their secretary or receptionist (whatever) told me it to be expected and not to worry and completely disregarded my concern and hung up. Needless to say, the following day (Xmas eve) and Xmas morning was spent debriding and packing a gaping hole (dry socket) with exposed bone and nerve. I'm currently waiting to be seen, again, listening to nothing but the sounds of cursing and Spanish speaking only (by choice) associates of dr Chi in the waiting room. Their disregard for compassion and professionalism is shocking, the economy is so bad that I'm surprised they have their jobs. Dr Chi is a sweet sweet man, an great at what he does.. I just wish his kindness wasn't mistaken for weakness and let these employees run the show. My dentist warned me about their staff, I should've listened. If you're nervous about oral surgery, please don't come here. His staff is GHETTO, speaks only Spanish around you (rude) and are apathetic and disregard compassion. I have been to Dr. Chi twice now. Both on the referral of my Dentist Dr. Jasmine. The first visit, I had an infected molar which he removed. He recommended that I be put to sleep for the procedure to ensure I didn't feel pain. I agreed and let him put me to sleep to pull the tooth. The combined cost was over $500.00 for a tooth extraction and to be put under anesthesia. Mind you I have Anthem PPO. Of course when you are in pain and in a tough situation you will pay just about any amount of money right? These types of tooth extractions are a little bit too much for a normal dentist to take on because there are nerves and sinus components of your facial structure that are intertwined or close to these teeth. Hence the Oral Surgeon referral. My experience with his staff has been somewhat pleasant. The office honestly looks like a dental office from a third world country. There is rust in many places, the equipment is broken down, the cleanliness is awful. I can only surmise there are routine inspections for these facilities? For my second visit, Dr. Chi was referred to extract a wisdom tooth. He looked at my tooth and estimated my copay portion would be $130.00. I opted to have the local anesthetic and NOT be put to sleep due to the enormous costs associated. He tried at least 5 times to persuade me hard to be put to sleep. He told me that I could feel pain, I could be uncomfortable, that I WOULD feel pain. He also admitted to me during his sales closing process of trying to increase my bill that if I was asleep I wouldn't fight him and he could get the job done faster. Basically, he admitted that he often times puts people to sleep for his own benefit, not theirs. When you are put to sleep he doesn't have to worry about numbing you more than once if he is hurting you, he doesn't have to worry about ensuring he is gentle and using bedside manners while taking care of your oral dental issues because you are asleep and you won't know the difference. He went out of his way to try and scare me and use scare tactics, offered to reschedule my appointment after I was in his chair and my mouth was already numb just to sell me dental services that I did not need.(Yes after he already put a needle in my gums multiple times and I was numb, he tried to reschedule my appointment and have me pay to be put under anesthesia. I was so nervous and honestly scared I was asking his assistant if I would be ok and she said I think so, but she was scared to rebut him in front of him. Ladies and Gentlemen, I have never. When he used his needle to numb my mouth, he was a little aggressive with the first round of local anesthetic application as he forced the anesthetic into my gums quite rapidly which of courses causes it to burn substantially. He started to remove the tooth, and I started to feel discomfort so he had to add more anesthesia. At this point he was jamming the needle into my gums because what the hell? I was already numb I wouldn't feel his rough and aggressive actions. Thankfully he removed the tooth in one piece. After the extraction he quickly left. The nurse said "See, I told you would be fine without being put under anesthesia". I asked her, "Why does he do that to patients? Why does he use scare tactics and force people to be put under anesthesia?" She motioned me to be quiet because he was right outside of the door(writing my prescription for pain medication) and she quietly whispered "money" Another assistant walked by, as she looked at me she rubbed her fingers together which is the sign of money. I tried to think about this experience holistically. I realize that oral surgeons are not maintenance dentists and many patients will only see them once or maybe twice. I understand trying to maximize your business to its fullest potential but this was excessive, unethical, and borderline fraudulent. read more

My wisdom tooth extraction procedure went so well, I just had it done yesterday and I feel fine! I opted for the local anesthetic (against Dr. Chi's suggestion) because it cost so much extra and my insurance had a $1250 limit. I do feel as though the complete sedation was being pushed on me for Dr. Chi's personal preference (and price increase) because the procedure was so fast and skillfully done, even though I had all four removed it only took a total of 30 min including taking time to become numb!! I don't feel like the complete sedation was necessary at all considering. Hopefully I'll continue healing so well and my follow up apt goes just as well. read more

Dr. Chi was awesome! My kid has a phobic regarding dentists and previous dentist visits. I was happy with his service. Took my son's mind out of the procedure and was very kind. Staff are also amazing. Very friendly and caring. Dr. Chi explained the procedure step by step and kept my mind at ease. I was very happy with the outcome and my son as well. read more

I am so glad that I DID NOT cancel and went to my appointment with Dr Chi. I was referred to Dr. Chi by my dentist. I have always had a fear of dentists/needles and the day before my appointment, after reading all the yelp reviews, I was going to cancel. I am so HAPPY that I went to my appointment!! Dr Chi and the people that work in his office are so kind and helpful. I had to have an implant after a broken tooth was removed. After the 3D xray, he said that he could do it. I was so happy - I will finally be able to smile big again soon. I have 1 appointment left before I go back to my dentist for a permanent crown. Getting an implant is not just 1 simple visit, it is a few. I feel Dr. Chi did a wonderful job on the implant and being attentive on helping me to be comfortable with all that was going to happen. He told me that I may need pain medication after the implant was drilled into my jaw bone, but I did not. A little sore, but a bee sting felt worse. I felt great within a few hours. Dr Chi was very nice, and he did know what he was doing. However, he shares his office with an urgent care and the waiting room was overrun with sick kids. Not sanitary at all! I don't go to the dentist to get sick! The facilities are ghetto--everything is really really old and run down, which does not inspire me. Dr. Chi is very great. This is my first time in an oral surgeons office and i was afraid due to my overthinking but he did a really good job of making sure i wasnt in a lot of pain considering i opted out of general anesthesia. He made me feel really taken care of. I would recommend this oral surgeon!! But, there is no parking for this place and as stated in other reviews, he does share an office with an urgent care and it is really a dated office - maybe a few upgrades wont hurt since the dentist is already amazing.
