This is an interesting place, dated and been there for decades, with a dim sum menu that's only available on weekends. The highlight here, in my view, is the yeasted doughy items. The steamed and baked buns are all really exceptional (and on their own, if this were a bakery, would be a 5*). The "football," which is a fried glutinous rice dumpling with meat, is also wonderful. I'm rating this 4 rather than 5 because the dim sum standards are less special. The har gao, siu mai, etc are no better than you can get elsewhere in town. But it's well worth a trip for the more unusual dim sum menu items that are hard to find anywhere else. (It's also worth a trip for the vintage ambiance!) read more

As vegetarians, we're always on the lookout for places with enough menu items to make it worth the drive to Seattle. We'd heard many good things about Chiang's, they're quite the institution along Lake City Way - and decided to give them a try. I'm so glad we did! We'll absolutely be back again and again! While the outside might be a little bit stuck in the 1970's, don't let that retro vibe stop you.. Chiang's offers FOUR different menus, including DimSum on weekends, and one of their menus is pages and pages of vegetarian options. Reviews and well-deserved awards are posted proudly in frames, take time to browse a few if you can! Staff are the nicest people you will EVER meet, super friendly and helpful in navigating the huge array of choices. Food arrived quickly; fresh, delicious and beautifully plated. "Spicy" options aren't extreme, fried foods didn't taste greasy and sauces are the perfect texture and amount. 100/100 if I could rate them that way! read more

It was a solid 3, the restaurant was pretty hyped with how good it was in Sichuan food. But the menu wasn't that varied. And you have to ask specifically to get the Chinese menu Vs the Americanized menu, not a big deal. But you have to know that it's there. The choices were good. The food was tasty though it wasn't the best Sichuan that I've ever had. And they have a lot of other options which I will come back and try. I'm also interested in trying their dim sum on Sundays. Service was was good though, I couldn't seem to get across the fact that I wanted plain sparkling water which they don't have. Ok this place is such a blast from the past. It's in a drive through area in Lake City and the menu feels like it's from the 1960s. There are crowds of people here and it's the epitome of Chinese-American food. Yet if you want authentic Chinese you can get it here. Just speak some Chinese and you will volumes of home cooking comfort food. That's big potstickers, tons of noodles and pots of old favorites. Come here though just to see food go by. Shao Bing was a little on the over-toasted side, but we enjoyed most of the items we ordered (and goodness knows there aren't a ton of places outside of Bellevue to get this type of food). Beware that the fried foods here are uniformally salty (anything prepared in the "salt and pepper" style), -but you can ask them to tone it down. read more

I've eaten here for years even before this business was open. Its predecessor New Peking in my opinion brought northern Chinese food styles into the Seattle area which was where my love for non Cantonese Chinese food began. This building was originally an early drive in during my mother's youth hence the root beer barrel coming out the roof. It has seen almost no maintenance or repairs/paint inside or out since the New Peking days of the 80s and it shows. If you want to go to a nice clean restaurant keep driving by. This place is unique in its own ways as well as their dim sum (weekend only) from what I understand is not the typical Hong Kong style fair. It appears to be quite popular but on weekends when we drive by to Seattle we tend to get something in the CID. There are cleaner nicer restaurants there believe it or not. My wife won't eat there..... This day I just wanted lunch and for years I've eaten a lunch special there. A number of years ago I realized it wasn't so special so haven't been back. Instead of the lunch special I ordered the noodle soup with pickled vegetables and pork. The whole time the lady wanted me to sit elsewhere because of the food choice of the loud and very opinionated gossiping Chinese ladies in the next booth. They had ordered stinky tofu!! Well I had to assure the server a few times that my wife's family eats things just as stinky to me and comfortable with it. It was pretty funky when heated up though!!!! So the noodles came and she brought me chili sauce as requested. The noodles were good but I'm pretty sure packaged. Pork was generous enough but it had a unique taste that I'm not sure I liked? I'm very familiar with this dish and have made it myself before. I've never been suspect of the flavor or smell but this one was off. It was still tasty and I was hungry. One thing I noticed was the pickled vegetables were different than usually get or use myself. I think they try to "pickle" what they have around instead of using the pickled tubors etc that I'm used to. Here's another Chinese restaurant I visited to dine and visit with a friend. Their Mongolian Beef was the best I've had in 30 years so I plan to go back again for more the next time I'm in the area. The staff was friendly and the booths were comfotable for eating and visiting. The only picture I took was of my Mongolian Beef lunch special and the homemaid noodles which I heard are popular along with the tofu dish my friend ordered. The ADA entrance was a little tight for my wheelchair but with help, it worked out OK. read more

A perfect local neighborhood spot! The servers there are very kind and it seems like they enjoy having families dine in. The servers loved saying hi to all the children and spent time at each table with small children! My party and I came in for an early dinner and our dinner with less than $100 after tax and tip for a party of four which is amazing! We left super full and with leftovers too. We ordered the bbq pork buns, crab rangoons, and 3 entrees which were massive! We got our food quite quickly and everything was solid! We got a half order of pecking duck which was perfect to share and super crispy and flavorful. We also ordered a chicken entree and noddles which gave a good variety. Great food! Surprised how crowded it was. Maybe Saturday night at dinner time was not such a great idea. Lots of screaming kids tonight, but that didn't detour us from staying to order our favorite dishes; cold noodles and vegetarian spareribs! Service has always been good. We were t in any hurry even though we could see the wait staff was rushing around. We could have ordered more, but for just the two of us, two dishes were fine and we still took food home! Don't judge a diner by its cover. Service is exceptionally friendly. They have an extensive menu and have dim sum on weekend mornings. The handmade noodles are a must have and so are the green beans. If you are scared of oil, this may not be the spot for you. What they lack in ambience they make up in welcoming warmth and flavor. read more

This is one of our go-to spots for Sunday brunch or anytime I'm missing my dad's home cooking. Yummy Chinese and Szechuan food, plus dim sum on the weekends. Service is always fast, and Mabel is the best! She always has new recommendations for us to try, and they never disappoint. Chiangs forever!! read more

Good food and great service this is a local place for us that took me forever to get to because the outside is pretty run down. After several friends recommended that we try it we finally did and I was very pleasantly surprised. A major stand out for me we're the pork green beans. I will definitely be returning here. Service was great. It wasn't busy on a typical Monday night. The 3-cup chicken (三杯雞）was a little overcooked. Rice was not hot enough. Salt & pepper pork chop , dry-sauteed string beans and another pork chop dish (forgot the English name, 京都肉排）with almost like sweet & sour sauce were all delicious! There are other dishes that are good but we couldn't order that much as we had only four people at the dinner. Will return to have other yummy dishes soon! read more

They have a ton of different menus here so make sure you check them all out as they are all different: dim sum menu, Chinese menu, vegetarian menu, lunch menu. The Chinese menu is the most extensive menu however it is written in English so so don't worry, you'll be able to read it. We came in a huge group 2 huge tables , and amazingly they were able to get us in and out within two hours. That's pretty impressive with everybody ordering drinks, appetizers, and entrées. I ordered the pork and shrimp shumai. as well as the pan fried noodles, Shanghai style with beef. Both of these dishes were delicious and I would totally order them again. I also had to try some of my friends food, including the green beans which were really garlicy & delicious. The green onion, pancakes, and some kind of peanut sauce with chicken dish. It was nice to try some new dishes and I liked them all. I'm not sure if they will split the bill for large groups as my friend offered to pay and then we all paid her. But I was definitely impressed with all the service we received as well as the delicious food. Will definitely be coming here again. read more

Went on a Sunday thirty mins after they opened. It wasn't too busy and my party of five was able to get seated right away. Inside is how a typical Asian restaurant would look like. Ordered chinese donut with hot sweet soy milk, taro cake, rice roll with pork floss, and congee. Most tasted decent. They could be good comfort food but nothing extraordinary. I had really high hopes but I have to say this was the worst Chinese food I've had. I couldn't eat any of the chicken, as every piece had a very weird chewy texture in the middle. We have been enjoying meals at Chiang's for a long time now. My comments are based on several visits. The staff has always been very good to us, and we have had several different servers and/or greeters. So, it is very impressive that all of them have been so pleasant. People go here for the quality of food. They have so many items to choose from because they have a few different menus. Some of the hits have been the pan fried noodles, the spicy crispy chicken, Ta-Chien chicken, and the sizzling plate to name a few. It's also a nice location for larger parties because they have a few large round familial tables with 8-10 seats. I feel the food is one of the top in the Seattle area. read more

There's a reason this place is legendary. We ordered Szechuan eggplant, Szechuan crispy scallops, Mongolian beef, wonton soup, egg drop soup, and fried noodles with shrimp. Every dish was amazing. The service was also super fast. This is very much a cozy, family-style restaurant with homemade food. They give huge portions, but I recommend ordering a lot of food anyway. They'll box up anything you can't finish. I can't wait to try more of the menu. In my opinion the best dish was the eggplant. It hit the perfect balance of umami and spice, with that walnutty finish on the back of the palate characteristic to sauces that have the correct amount of aged vinegar. Everything is really comforting and they have a special Chinese menu outside of the regular menu iykyk. This is also one of the only restaurants in Seattle that sells all types of bing in case you're in the mood. 3.5 star is where it's at when it comes to authentic Asian food (iykyk) this place looks so trash and I was honestly taken back by it. But you know... don't judge a book by it's cover. You need to come here during the weekend for its breakfast menu. I come here for the sticky rice rolls and particularly love the savory ones. I don't know if there's anywhere else to get it. I love their pork century egg congee too--super flavorful and not overly large portion size. Staff are all friendly here, though service can be a bit slow during the weekend. My family owned a Chinese restaurant in L.A. Chinatown back in the 1960's and Chiang's Gourmet Restaurant kind of reminds me of it. On the upside, the food is really good and authentic. Easily in the top 10 Chinese restaurants in Seattle and the service is good. On the downside, the venue really needs a little TLC. I would dine in here but it is a little run down. Apparently it was a local root beer chain (XXX?) which dates back to the 1940's. So there is a nostalgic history to the building. So here is how it scored from high to low... 1. Chajiang Mian 5/5 ($15): wow love their hand made noodles. 2. Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet 5/5 ($24): a fabulous rendition but a little pricey 3. Fried Dumpling 4/5 ($14-8 pieces): a really solid pot sticker 4. Five Star Spicy Hot Chicken 4/5 ($18): well it was 4 stars and not that spicy LOL Actually enjoyed this dish and would order again. 5. Beef Chow Fun 3/5: not on the menu but the meat was chewy and no onions or bean sprouts. 6. Bean Curd Sheet Roll: 3/5 ($10-1 roll): this was a disappointment for me. It was pricy and really dry compared to a traditional bean curd roll. All that said it is innovative. I like this place and will definitely return for takeout. I guess it's known for its Taiwanese breakfast dishes. It's pricey but everything is pricey these days. At least the quality and quantity justifies the cost. It's a "diamond in the rough" or maybe a "diamond in a root beer stand". LOL Check it out. read more

It's been several years since I've ordered out, eaten at Chiang's and tried it in acknowledgment of 2026 Lunar Year "Double Fire Horse!" I understand it has been under new ownership (assumed, not verified). Discovered the ordering via phone was easy, mutually understandable and respectful. Order was ready as projected, family of seven enjoyed every dish we ordered. The restaurant was busy with nearly a full house of customers. Staff were welcoming, greeted me timely and expedited my order, payment efficiently. The setting hasn't change since I remember it more than 10 years ago, external and internal (external could use an update fresh paint as well as internal updates and decor. Perhaps, one last note on my review! Picture it! Seattle. Christmas Eve, 2023. The people are hungry. The restaurants are closed. Panic runs amok in the streets and then from afar (or from a post in a Facebook group...), you see it, like a beacon in the night guiding you to salvation ...a bright neon sign ... Chiang's Gourmet (queue festive holiday music). Given that we visited on Christmas Eve, we were surprised at getting seated almost right away. Some patrons arriving after us did seem to have a small ... but very modest wait, especially considering it was Xmas Eve. The service overall was very fast, very knowledgeable, very friendly, but not without some small caveats (I'll touch on those later on in the review). If you're a vegetarian or vegan, please make a point to ask for their separate vegetarian menu (which is also accessible online). The majority of their vegetarian options are vegan, barring options that contain eggs. If you're unsure, definitely check with your servers as they seem very knowledgeable. The menu has a plethora of appealing options, whether you're looking for an appetizer, soup, noodles, special entree ... you'll find something to love! Most of the food was over the top amazing, the sweet and sour ribs were "meaty" with sweet overtones and a cute, edible bamboo "bone" in the middle, green onion pancakes, thick and savory .. especially when coupled with the delicious brown dipping sauce, the fried tofu seemed just ...ok, by that I mean a bit too cooked on the outside (all three in our party felt the same) , but all of the other vegan items were nothing short of amazing (please see attached pictures). The prices you'll find here are not cheap but at the same time ... the portion sizes are really big, so you do get your money's worth! Ok, the caveats. One of the main entrees was brought to the table before even the appetizers had arrived, we found that to be odd. The other oddity was not bringing rice to the table until well after all of the main entrees arrived. I'm totally willing to dismiss the errant timing of the food service due to Xmas Eve craziness but I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention this. The last caveat was the bathrooms, they're kind of dinky, to be honest. My overall thoughts, Chiang's Gourmet is a huge win-win. There were some caveats which I wanted to be honest about in the interest of presenting a full and balanced review but I'm thinking there's no way you come out of your experience at Chiang's disappointed in any way. read more

As I wrote two years ago, we've been going to this restaurant for something like 15 years, and the quality of the chicken used for the General Cho's has been going downhill for a long time, but we've stuck with the place because the shredded pork with Szechuan garlic sauce is very good. But today the chicken was truly terrible. I'm not sure it was even chicken--it was more like fatty grisle. The quality of ingredients at Snappy Dragon is vastly better. My family has been frequently eating at Chiang's for well over a decade. It has been a great place to eat. Recently - the last several months - our experiences have been disappointing. The prices have gone up, which is understandable, but the quality has nosedived. I suspect there has been significant staff turnover in the kitchen. It looked like they grabbed a handful of noodles and stir fried them in soy sauce, tossed in some cooked chicken and green onions, and called it done. No veggies. No extras. This visit took place on a Saturday evening in August, 2025. Our group of 7 diners was seated comfortably at round table with a lazy Susan circle in the center. The menu is quite extensive so checking it out before going to restaurant is a big help. Serving size was large and reasonably priced. Service itself was outstanding with two of the waitstaff and the staff in the kitchen caring for our group. One thing to consider is that the outside of Chiang's Gourmet building looks pretty tired. My wife and I love this place. It's not a beautiful building, and the decor is dated. Who cares!? The food is delicious- always fresh, and large portions. We have been fortunate, they have been able to accommodate us w/o reservations. This year, we had my bday dinner there (including young children) it went off without issue, and the staff was wonderful. You drive by and see the dated building/ give it a try. Kicking myself for not trying this restaurant earlier. Chiang's Gourmet is easily one of the best Chinese restaurants on the North side of Seattle! We went for dim sum, which they serve from 10:30am-3pm Sat and Sun. We arrived at around 11am on Sunday and were seated almost immediately. The food was delicious and fresh, and our server was incredibly nice! Food: Baked Cake Wrapped with Stuffing of Beef: 5/5, this was recommended by our server and it was delicious! It was similar to a meat pie with a yummy umami beef and veggie filling. Pork Shui Mai with Shrimp: 5/5, some of the best shui mai I've had. Juicy meaty filling with great flavor. Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf: 5/5, delicious sticky rice! Great filling of Chinese Sausage, beef, mushrooms, etc. Sweet Rice Round Dumpling Wrapped with Dried Turnip, Fritters of Twisted Dough & Fried Shredded Meat: 3/5, probably would not order this again. It was good, but the filling was a bit too salty for my taste buds. Steamed BBQ Pork Bun: 3/5, solid bbq pork buns, but nothing to write home about. I prefer a higher filling-to-bun ratio. Deep Fried Meat Dumplings: 2/5, not my favorite. Too much dough and not enough different flavors in the filling. Overall, I definitely plan to try this place again, with a couple of adjustments to the order (and possibly more than 2 people so we can try more dishes!).
