I love baseball and if you visit this restaurant you'll know why I had to come here to check it out as I heard it was loaded with baseball memorabilia. I first learned learned about this place about 18 years ago. Took my wife there on our second date and had a wonderful meal. It was her first experience to korean bbq. Fast forward 12 years (10 years of marriage and 3 kids)... Was visiting a friend who lived 4 blocks from this joint. Got hungry and decided to walk down Lawrence and was surprised to see that the place hasn't changed. The owner even recognized me after all these years - she's so sweet. Ok back to the food. The portions are small but the quality is much better than other korean bbq. Actually, I wouldn't compare it to other korean places because you don't get the attitude from the staff. This was by far THE WORST Korean bbq I have been to. I honestly went because of how good the reviews are (which I do not understand why). First of all the service was horrible. It was our first time there so we wanted to know what the popular dishes where and how they came. The waitress was rushing us, did not explain anything and just took our order and left (we only saw her once after that). Secondly, the portions were so small compared to other places. Cho Sun Ok and Gobi are way better in taste and portions, and they are cheaper. The meat came (we ordered Bulgogi, the short ribs with and without soy sauce) and they were all flavorless and bland. Extremely overpriced for the amount of kalbi you get and the kalbi is just OK. We placed two orders since that is the minimum to cook yourself and when it arrived we kept asking "are you sure this is TWO orders?" The meal also comes with very little side dishes. The woman confirmed they do not serve big portions. You're better off going to Joong Boo Market ("Chicago Food") to buy your own kalbi and make it yourself at home. Word to the wise ...do not come here if super hungry! After watching the Bulls game at home we decided we wanted Korean BBQ. After digging through some Yelp reviews, we came upon this one. We drove all the way from Printers Row to Albany Park for this place. The decor is a little odd with pictures of the owners with Asian baseball players and a bunch of baseball memorabilia. The owners are so nice and sweet that it makes me feel bad that I didn't enjoy this place too much. The BBQ is 17 bucks a person on average. The three of us ordered bugolgi, kalbi, and shrimp. The meal came with a bowl of rice, soup, and about 8 total so-so bonchons for the group. The meat came and well each dish only had EIGHT PIECES....yes eight smmmmaaaaalll pieces. We were expecting more than eight pieces of meat per a dish. Don't get me wrong the meat was delish and seasoned nicely. Getting only eight pieces of thinly cut meat and only eight tiny bonchons for the entire table was a little disappointing. We were all hoping maybe it is AYCE...nope. We ended up asking for more bonchons and well the waitress didn't seem to appreciate that. Overall, we were disappointed we drove all the way here for eight pieces of meat a person with bland bonchons. So some friends from work, the wife, and I decide to give this place a go for a double date. It has pretty high reviews and we like Korean BBQ so it seemed like an obvious choice. So my first issue is that the TV was playing 'Biggest Loser'. And if that wasn't bad enough it was the part with the weigh-ins. There is no way that looking at people pushing 300lbs weighing in without shirts is appetizing before dinner. I asked if we can turn the tv off or change the channel, and after a minute or confusion they turned it off. So we started our meal with the karage wings and the cow tongue appetizers. They were both okay, nothing too special. However for the price of the cow tongue I would have expected something a little more substantial. I wasn't too disappointed as I'm not the offal fan in the group. For the mains we ordered four meats to put on the bbq. They were bulgogi, shrimp, pork belly, and kalbi. All were good, all the kim chis were good. However I personally didn't find this place to be worth the drive into the city. So the spread also had some lettuce to make wraps with the meat and some sauce. At I ate the wrap normally. Then the lady told me to grill the lettuce.... I was confused but said okay and gave it a try. She corrected herself and told us grill the meat not the lettuce (which I already knew!) to make the wrap. She kept on trying to show us how to eat and use the grill...... It was a little weird because none of us were asking for help and were doing fine before she showed up I honestly can find just as good or better Korean in Niles, Glenview, or Buffalo Grove. read more

Korean BBQ done Japanese Style. What's it missing from a normal Korean place? Some of the spicyness, a lot of the panchan, most of the attitude. Instead it's a distinctly different feeling Korean BBQ - different, but not bad. The staff is very nice and the interior is clean, and has a sort of shrine to Japanese baseball players which is entertaining to examine. The owners are Koreans who were raised in Japan, explaining the differences between more traditional Korean places. I recommend the spicy pork, which is outstanding! read more

Chicago Kalbi is my only experience with Korean BBQ, but just because I no similar restaurants to compare it to does not lessen my enjoyment when dining here. If this is your first time, I highly recommend getting one of the combos for two listed toward the bottom of the menu (being less adventurous, we always get the shrimp, beef, chicken combo). It comes with 6-8 different sides (including the Korean dining standby of kimchi), miso soup, rice, lettuce (for wraps) and ice cream, so it is a great way to get a feel for Korean cuisine. When getting the combo, there is no need to also order any additional appetizers - you will have more than enough food already. The meat is of good quality, and cooking it is more fun than work. One of the main reasons to go to Chicago Kalbi is for the experience. I particularly enjoy when we are seated within our own dining cubicle. The walls are literally covered with photographs of the owners and "famous" visitors, skewing toward Korean or Japanese baseball players. While it isn't my preferred atmosphere, the photos exemplify the family environment at Chicago Kalbi. This is a great place to take out-of-town/-neighborhood visitors, or to go for a little nicer meal in Albany Park. The kalbi was great, flavor-wise. That's the only thing that warrants the 2 stars I'm giving this place. The prices are outrageous. I've eaten a lot of KBBQ at a lot of places. Never have I paid so much for such a small portion. Delicious? Yes. But worth the ~$20 for the little bit of meat? Not for me. The ventilation could be better, especially at a cook-at-your-table restaurant. We kept questioning if our vents were on because it seemed like no smoke was getting sucked up from our grills. And when you looked across the restaurant, the other side was totally hazy from the collective smoke. Lastly (I can let this one *somewhat* slide, as our waiter admitted he was new), the service was awful. We had to ask for our rice and side dishes, as they only brought out the meat (apparently, it comes with soup, too, as I'm reading from the other reviews. We did not get any soup, and only 1 rice). Our water was never refilled, no one came to check on us to ask how things were or if we needed anything. Horrible, horrible service. The only time we did receive decent service is when one of their wooden partitions got knocked over, effectively clocking someone at our table square on the shoulder...hard! Suddenly, servers flocked to our table offering ice packs & cold cloths, free dessert, and even going so far as to walk us out of the restaurant when we were ready to leave. While the incident was accidental & not their fault (apart from having wobbly partitions) I very much do not believe that an injury should suddenly be cause for good service & attention. I LOVE this place. My boyfriend and I come here at least twice a month and we never tire of it. It's a casual atmosphere and the staff is extremely accommodating and so polite. You will see the chef on a regular basis coming out to greet his customers and making sure all are satisfied and comfortable with their order. My boyfriend was an English teacher in Japan for some time and said that this place made him feel like he was actually in a yakiniku (which means grilled meat) restaurant in Japan. This place is wallpapered with pictures of Japanese baseball stars that have come to dine which is a pretty good indication of the quality of the food. Onto what you really want to know...what we usually order: Appetizers: Pajun - this is a delightful dish. It has green onions, squid, and beef all mixed into a pancake-like batter and comes with a vinegar based dipping sauce. Sooooo freakin' good. My mouth is watering just typing about it. Karaage - fried little drumsticks and chicken wings served with a spicy dipping sauce - very crispy and tasty! Main dish: Kalbi (Japanese style) - This order comes with so many different garnishes, I can't even remember all of the little dishes that came out: bean sprouts, cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi, turnip kimchi, lettuce, seaweed, potato salad, some kind of spicy bean paste, white rice, miso soup etc. I'm sure I forgot several others. The meat is so flavorful and tender you will want to keep eating more that what you can normally handle. Kalbi (Korean style) - This also comes with all the same little dishes above. The only difference is the meat is much thinner and is wrapped around a rib (which is cut off for you before you start grilling the meat). I have to say, this was even tastier than the Japanese style. I'm guessing because the meat is thinner and soaks up the marinade. Dessert - We have ordered the lemon, mango, pineapple, and coconut sorbets. All yummy dishes to end the meal =) Come visit this place with your friends or family. And like other said, this place is clean and friendly; if going to an "authentic" place means dealing with the Korean attitude, then I'd rather be going to a place like this. Plus, marks for authenticity in my book when there were about 20 Asian businessmen dining in the private booths. NOT Korean BBQ. It's Japanese-style Korean BBQ. Definitely a difference. This place was started up by a couple where the husbad is Japanese and the wife is Korean. The food is decent, but you will be lacking in the side dishes that are normally served with Korean food. Serving sizes leave MUCH to be desired. You're not going to get your money's worth, that's for sure. But what you actually get is tasty. Definitely nowhere near the best, but definitely not the worst. Seriously though, my biggest complaint is that for the price, the portions are absolutely horrible. The BEST thing about Chicago Kalbi is that it's a hot spot for Japanese baseball players. Just about every Japanese baseball player that has ever come through Chicago has been to Chicago Kalbi, be it Ichiro, or Godzilla. Heck, the Cubs had just signed Fukudome and just a few days later I saw his autograph on the wall. He hadn't even been introduced to the press, or seen in a Cubs jersey, and yet he'd been to Chicago Kalbi on his visit to sign his contract. Amazing! :: edit :: I've been asked to elaborate on what makes it Japanese-style Korean BBQ. I guess it's a subtle difference as far as tastes go, but I noticed that things are a bit sweeter. Closer to teriyaki sweetness as opposed to what you'd find at a Korean establishment. And really, the portions stick out as being a huge difference from what you'd find at a Korean place. Smaller, thinner portions, that come across as being neat and tidy as opposed to bang for the buck, which is what people look for with Korean. And the biggest difference is the lack of side dishes. The portions are smaller than normal and pricing is high. We sampled three varieties of kalbi, didn't like any of them. Two guys ate all that, still hungry. They serve Mochi here, three flavors. Google it, try it. Its yum. (Store bought of course) If they made their own, that would be cool. Appetizers are good, though the haemul pajun wasn't great. Just ok. You feel a little confused after reading all the reviews here, is this a Korean or Japanese restaurant? The reviewers using the Japanese term, Yakiniku , are the ones who know what they're talking about. Yakiniku is the Japanese word for Korean barbecue, and that's what this unique (in Chicago it's unique, it's common in Japan, where maybe the most popular "ethnic" food is Korean) restaurant serves, Korean food the way Japanese like to eat Korean barbecue. It's Nihon-ryori, Japanese-style food, but not Japanese cuisine, if you're with me so far. So, because this is THE place that Japanese professional baseball players like to come when in Chicago, they've got a very impressive collection of sports memorabilia posted up, and often they've got a lot of Japanese businessmen as customers. The ambiance is a little fancier, more elegant than the more typical Korean bbq places. It's also the reason their prices are higher than more authentic Korean barbecue (this is authentic Japanese-style Korean bbq), and the service is, different. "Good" attentive American style restaurant service is not really a part of authentic Korean restaurant service, by American standards their waitstaff are more or less indifferent. Here, the Korean waitresses approximate Japanese style service, mispronouncing Japanese greetings and thank-yous, but speaking enough Japanese to handle the Japanese business clientele. They're pretty flexible, they also provide fairly good service for American white customers, but they are not very friendly to actual Koreans or Korean-Americans who wander in here (by mistake). Since I don't look Japanese (my mother was from Japan), and the rest of my group was South Asian or White, we had a real hard time getting them to bring us white rice (SO DA NE, gohan wa doko desu ka? White rice shouldn't be so hard to get in a "Japanese" restaurant!). Thus, I highly recommend this restaurant if you spent enough time in Japan to develop a taste for this specific kind of restaurant, if you're from Japan or entertaining guests from Japan, or if you're a baseball fan. I don't recommend this restaurant if you're looking for real Korean bbq, you're better off at Booill Restaurant, 3346 West Bryn Mawr Avenue. If you're looking for Japanese cuisine, I suggest Midori, 3310 W Bryn Mawr (actually Korean owned and operated, with Mexican chefs, but for Koreans, Japanese is the most popular "ethnic" food, and for some cultural reason Mexican chefs are extremely versatile, so Midori is quite good Japanese food, even though there are no Japanese involved in the making or the serving). read more

Solid late night KBBQ choice. Went here after 10:30pm on a Saturday with a friend, and promptly got seated in a cool side room with a curtain. It's a no frills joint, but it's one of those joints you go strictly for the food. The wood fire grill was a first for me at a KBBQ, as I'm used to electric stoves at other places. I thought it made a great difference in taste, although cooking the meat could be tricky at times when it got sticky. The server could've done a better job cleaning the charcoal as we went. This is one of the more upscale quality and presentation orientated kalbi houses in the city. I've been coming here since I was a little girl and not much has changed except the dessert menu. (I still want that plum wine ice cream recipe by the way.) They stand apart from their competition by offering wood chips instead of gas for their tables, offer privacy rooms and open seating, Japanese appetizers and Korean entrees. The owners are a Japanese/Korean couple that being both their cultures toward into what simply tastes like the best quality beef, sliced pork, and seafood pancakes. There's always a familiar greeting at the door met with warm smiles, a glass that's never in danger of drying up and a great smoky smell that fills the air and permeates your clothes. I ate here on saturday. the service was terrible. We ordered the short rib to grill at out table. The charcoal was brought out to the table quickly then a little bit later the meat showed up. we decided to wait until the sides and sauces came out before we started grilling , the waitress told us we must grill the meat now because the coals won't last. i told her that we want the sides and sauces and that no one wanted to eat the meat by itself. this was a bad sign. then we decided to start grilling and realized that the meat was frozen, very frozen. I asked to speak to the manager. she told us that its "Japanese style korean bbq, it is served semi-frozen for freshness," at this point i realized that she thought we were morons. I felt thankful for a second thinking "OMG, there's three meats for this $42 meal!" Right when the food arrived, that's when the disappointment started. It's basically the same thing I experienced when I was at another Korean BBQ! Given this isn't an all you can eat place, this place is still overcharged. However, at this Japanese owned restaurant, they do offer the friendly service (though not so attentive) due to the wall dividers. We were here to celebrate a birthday and made reservations. We were told to just come right in since we can't call to change our time due to delays. Since we ate a two-person's dinner for $42, we were given some side dishes with one bowl of soup (and were given one spoon with two little bowls). I was quite disappointed. I was barely full even though everything was consumed. Two ice cream followed (one scoop with a wafer). We had to flag people down (twice with wait-time) to get the rack changed. This wasn't the experience I wanted at a Korean BBQ. But I do have to give them props for the bucket of burning coal. The vents weren't strong enough and since we were given a last-minute table fix the other pot of burning coal didn't have a vent to take the smoke in so we smoked the place up along with ourselves. I loved going home smelling like coal, but was terrified by the conditions of the place. I'm not risking more black lungs or a near asphyxiation experience anymore... At the end of the meal, we had pictures taken and the waitresses were nice enough to help, and sing the birthday girl a song. They complied to taking a picture with the birthday girl as well. Not a typical Korean BBQ place. I have heard that this used to be one? Much smaller portions of meat for the same price, but admittedly higher quality cut. The $18 kalbi plate netted us 7 pieces of meat so we had to order double. The marinade is different too, much lighter than the normal concoction of soy, vinegar, sugar sesame combo that is dripping all over. We only got 7 dishes of banchan and that made me so sad because I go to Korean BBQ mainly for the banchan. However, the customer service is very nice, Japanese style courtesy and everything is presented very neatly. Let me start at the end. I had a plate full of squid, munching away with my chopsticks, when (I shit you not) a spider dropped down from the vent shaft into my plate. I somehow managed not to lose any food out of my mouth when I screamed and jumped up from the table. My boyfriend displayed some acrobatic skills leaping across the flaming grill to kill it with a napkin. The lady at the front desk came over to see what the commotion was about... She took my plate and kept gesturing with it to me asking if I wanted to keep eating. Um... no. There is a smashed spider in the middle of all that squid, I think I will pass. Our waitress came out and did the same thing over and over. Are you kidding me? A LIVE eight legged creature was IN MY FOOD people! I don't want it! No apologies, no replacing all of the squid, no offers of a credit. They basically looked at me like I was nuts because I didn't want to keep eating. I walked out to the car because I couldn't take it any more. My boyfriend stayed and settled the tab. The beginning was not much better. We got seated next to a HUGE blaring TV. We waited a small eternity for someone to take our order. At $20 a person I was expecting quite a bit more food. The portions were small and the flavor was seriously lacking. The side dishes that come with should be amazing, but again, dull and flavorless. Service was horrendous. Meh. I was all set for the experience of a lifetime, based on the reviews here, but I was not impressed. We had the bbq and they were very skimpy on portions and number of side dishes. Seriously, about 1/3 the number/variety of other places on the north side, and weirdly, refills of some of them cost extra. Didn't see anything special about their menu or food that I haven't had elsewhere. Recommend you don't go on a Fri or Sat night as the place gets packed, lots of groups waiting in front of restaurant spill into the aisles between tables and hover over you, waiting for you to hurry up and finish already. I've only gone once, so it might have been an off-night, but since my gripes are about the skimpiness of the food itself, I'm not sure how that would change. read more

Our friend visiting from out of town wanted Korean BBQ, so good 'ol Yelp pointed us here and we weren't disappointed. We made reservations right for when it opened at 5pm and were seated right away. Chicago Kalbi is definitely kid-friendly as they had a high chair, plus a kids' size straw cup, kids plate and kids size utensils. Much appreciated! We split the pancake which was yummy and ordered three meat courses for our BBQ. We chose the short rib, beef tongue and cheek. All very delicious with our bowls of rice and miso soup as well as the standard Korean side dishes. Service was very good and it was nice that most tables are in semi-private booths. As other reviews have mentioned, Chicago Kalbi is a little pricey and I believe it should be $$$ in terms of price range on Yelp. read more

Checked out this place on Friday evening upon discovering that our intended destination was MUCH further than originally anticipated, after having it recommended to me by Megan B., despite my typical don't-go-to-a-restaurant-where-you-cook-your-own-food mentality. This place cracked me up. I felt sort of swank sitting in our tiny, semi-private room. I really wanted to make out with someone in there. I loved barbecueing tiny strips of chicken over a pit of fire in the middle of my table, turning them with miniature tongs, feeling like I was Alice in Wonderland. The chicken was tasty, as was about half of the sides that came in little dishes to be shared. I even liked the miso soup (which I usually dislike intensely). Though I enjoyed the experience, I did find it rather pricey. One big redeeming factor is the dessert. Green tea ice cream? Ah-mazing. Mango sorbet served in half a hollowed out mango rind? I've been coming here since 1991, Chiyo and her husband raise the bar above all the other Korean restaurants and competition because the service is so great that they provide. "Hospitality" isn't always a priority at most Korean restaurants...it's paramount here. I've brought 100's of my friends here and now they have all become loyal customers over the years! Expensive but worth it. Every meal we've had has been perfect. Go there with a native Japanese speaker and you will get the secret specials menu. The combos for 2 people are a perfect amount of food. My only word of caution is that your clothes will reek of smoke when you leave. That's all part of the fun, though. read more
