01/25/25 - We met my wife's family here for here birthday last night. The restaurant was packed but as usual we had awesome service from the staff there. Jenny was our server but as the night continued & it started getting very busy Bonnie (the owner) came out & started helping serving people. We have eaten here before but this is the first time Bonnie made an appearance As usual the food was good w/great size portions. As the night wore on we mentioned that it was my wife's birthday. Bonnie went above and beyond what we ever expected & not only brought out a small birthday cake that was big enough for our party of 8 along with/dishes, utensils & the coolest birthday candle. The birthday candle was a flower that burst open w/the candles lit playing HAPPY BIRTHDAY. This was so cool & unexpected that just brought a level of service above & beyond what you would expect from any restaurant Thank you for a nice ambiance, great food, & service above and beyond anything what is normal. We ordered a variety of items, from sushi rolls, bento boxes, to teriyaki chicken. Everything was great tasting, and it looked delicious. The room is nice and well laid out. We didn't know you had to reserve the private dining room, so the next time we go we absolutely will. The staff were great and very accomidating. The only think I will say is be careful how you order things. We had ordered a california maki roll, thinking we would get a traditional roll. What we got was the california hand roll, which is different. Both tasted fine, but it is different and we didn't realize our mistake until we got our food. read more

There's a reason for not going to these hip new sushi restaurants now and it's simple quality. I've been to many sushi restaurants in Chicago and this place is the foundation. I've been coming here for 18 years and it's always the best. The best of class in fresh/ best cuts of sushi. They don't serve subpar sushi. Everything is perfect big cuts and beautiful. Love this place and even the udon soup dishes and Katsu as well as everything is awesome. You can tell a great restaurant by the sides as well. They are excellently executed. The miso soup and salad and ginger green beans are all great! This is my go to place for sushi and more. They don't hide their quality with eel sauce and mayos even know they do use them. Have been coming here for years. The foods great and i can't say that it's not. However, this most recent pick up order I made seemed a little expensive and they were only taking cash so I asked for the receipt. Come to find the waitress added a 10% tip without my knowledge. It's $6 but come on now, I wasn't provided a tipped service and she tried to be sneaky about it. Tipping culture has gotten out of hand and for her to act angry that I came back to get my money is ridiculous. Watch your checks if you order pick up! read more

We have been regular diners at Midori for more than 10 years. We have recommended Midori to many friends, and very recently we went with friends after praising the side dishes and bento box specials. Our dining experience was not pleasant. As soon as we were seated, our waitress informed us that their computer/credit card service was not working and they could only accept cash payment. Our server was in a foul mood and slammed salad bowls down, handed soup bowls to us rather than place them in front, and dropped spoons with a clatter that attracted the attention of the sushi chef. The owner stopped by our table and noticed that our friend had placed a chopstick in the salad bowl. She grabbed the chopstick, said "That's bad luck" and took his half-eaten salad. Our server plunked down our bento boxes. The food was ok, but served so rudely that one of our friends could not finish her meal. I wish that we had walked out after our salad bowls were slammed down. We will never again visit Midori. read more

We have been coming here for years and the food is great. We wanted to sit in the private room but ended up having to sit at a table. I am not sure if this is where it started but the server was incredibly rude. The other two men that were helping were great. She was definitely having a bad day. She basically threw our food at all of us and then kept asking us if we were ready with the credit card holder already in her hand to charge us. They never gave us the warm towels and we had to keep asking for things like soy sauce dishes and plates and napkins. We were a large group and were celebrating a birthday and they did not do anything special for us like they did in years past. I am beyond shocked. I asked for a box and she tossed it across the table at me. She was always so nice and fun so maybe she really did just have a bad day and couldn't keep it in. I get it. When I did pay, I normally would've left more than a 20% tip as usual) but it was already added on there as 20% and there was no option to add. I didn't sign anything either. I would've left less based on how we were treated. The service did not deserve a 20% tip. The food was great and I would've said something if it wasn't for making a scene. I am going to call and follow up on this because that has never ever happened before. read more

Originally my friend and I were planning on going to Big Hill for his birthday across the street but they were closed. And so we decided to give Midori a shot and I'm glad we did. It had a definite family vibe. The service was excellent and the server guided us in choosing some options. My friend ordered a sushi dish. He liked it so much he ordered two. I don't remember the name but it was one of the best sushi dishes I've ever had. I had Oyakodon (chicken, rice and egg) and it was also solid. Definitely will be coming back. read more

Every aspect of this restaurant is outstanding. The food is wonderful, as is the service. It is such a relaxing place to eat with classical music in the background. I can easily converse with my friends who are with me. No one has to strain to hear one another. The owner hostess is also a very caring person. Midori is a bryn mawr staple. The food never fails, but even if it did the service is what makes this place shine. All of the workers are extremely nice and the owner will always make sure you know her margaritas are the best. I've been going to Midori for over 20 yrs. The sushi is fresh and is made by Robert. Always entertaining while sitting at the sushi bar. He will also give you great service and choices if your not sure what to get. They also have private rooms for bigger parties. Love this place! read more

I was actually super impressed with this place. I'm surprised I've never been there before, but I'll sure to stop by again! We had a big lunch so we just ordered gyoza, dynamite shrimp, and two sushi dishes. Not only did we get this, but also a tasty salad and hearty miso soup. What a surprise! The sushi was also massive so we were super stuffed! We ended up bringing home half of the sushi. We loved the dynamite shrimp! Very tasty! The gyoza was so so. It needed more flavor to it. The dynamite shrimp sauce did the trick! As for the service, it was excellent, especially for a place like this. The servers were kind of old, but certainly knew what they were doing. The place is a little cramped, but it's certainly a place I'll come back. The party room looks pretty sweet! read more

Went with family, food was good, service was just OK, never asked if we wanted refills on the soft drinks, which were on the menu as Coke, but was obviously not the real thing. (Generic cola at Coke prices) Be very aware when the bill comes. Your order is written on an old style traditional "order check", so it's not super readable. The last item on it is a 20% tip automatically added (on the taxed amount). Size of the party doesn't matter we were 5, table across from us was 2. Then, if you are paying by card, the card machine printed bill has a spot on it for TIP. If you aren't careful, you will be double tipping and not even realize it. Shady business practices. Solid Japanese food. Even the lower rated review(s) say the value is good for what it is. I'd rate the food quite higher for the $. Definitely worth a try. Noticed some of the other low rated reviews are complaining about how they're not cooked the way they want. I don't think Asian restaurants really do that kind of thing. I've never noticed it in the plenty of Asian restaurants I've been to. ... regardless, definitely would make this one of my "go to's". read more

Came here last weekend with family while we were visiting in Chicago. The location was good and it was a good sized restaurant. They have tatami rooms, sushi bar, and regular tables. The host is wearing a yukata to add to the authentic experience. We sat in a tatami room and were waited on in a timely manner. Service was good and menu was your average options. I got the chicken teriyaki, it came with a ginger dressing salad and miso soup. The miso was normal and the ginger dressing was not my favorite (normally it's my favorite in other places). The chicken teriyaki overall was pretty good and I really liked the cucumber side dish. I think this is a good place to get Japanese good with the family. I would come back when visiting Chicago :) read more

In Chicago visiting and was looking for some good Japanese sushi place. Found this restaurant on Yelp and has 4+ stars and decided to try it out. Not the biggest fan and not sure why it got rated so high. sushi- was all right. I did request less rice on the rolls and it's seems there's still a lot. beef katsu- over cooked Udon- the broth is a bit tasteless, very watery Soba- the noodles was not Al-dente and the dipping sauce tasted like water down soy sauce. They had side dishes but its not the likings. I have an extra star for service. read more

Midori is a comfortable bistro for sushi and Japanese dishes with space for individuals or small groups. The menu varies from lunch to dinner, as does pricing. My bento lunch at $12.95 had different items than the dinner version at $17.95. However, Chicago magazine called the bento at Midori an outstanding value. It was. A protein (teriyaki salmon for me) was complemented by a wonderful California roll, crispy tempura veggies, and plentiful rice. Before the meal a few small items were brought as that weren't quite appetizers but that served the purpose. I particularly enjoyed the cucumber slices that had a light sweet and sour taste. If you have to drive across two city limits during an hour lunch break to get to this place, it must be that good, right? Midori sits in a string of small restaurants on Bryn Mawr between Kedzie and Pulaski. Inside is clean and bright. There wasn't much of a lunch crowd. But, I remember it being busy while sitting in a restaurant nearby a few months ago. After we placed our order, the waitress brought us complimentary miso soup, which was very good and green beans & mushroom in a spicy sauce that was absolutely divine. My coworkers ordered various rolls and maki & Roberto's special maki. Robert's special maki consisted of shrimp tempura, snow crab meat, spicy sauce wrapped with rice. I'm not a sushi or roll person. I have to admit, it was really good. My chicken Yakisoba was a bit disappointing. I thought soba was made from buckwheat. I didn't expect a chicken lo mein with egg noodle from any typical Chinese restaurant down the street. The waitress was very friendly and the price was reasonable. I'd bring my sushi loving friends. My family and I have been coming to midori for YEARS. The decor leans toward a more traditional japanese dining experience. If you have a party of 5 or more, you can opt to sit in tradition japanese dining spaces (it's so fun and a great experience. The staff also is very accommodating to people with disabilities- they have always be very helpful to my grandparents who have limited mobility). Additionally, the staff is always so welcoming and accommodating! They continue to provide great food and amazing service to my family and me. It is one of my all time favorite restaurants and will always recommend it. read more

This restaurant has been in business for so long! I've dined here at various times over the years and it's always been a consistent experience. Please do yourself a favor & order agedashi tofu. It is soooo good. The sweet sauce that the tofu is soaked in, is just perfect. The tofu is deep fried and is perfectly crispy. Yuuuum! I want some as I'm writing this review. Our go to food is always tonkatsu and chirashi Korean style. Tonkatsu comes with salad and soup, and so does chirashi Korean style (hwae dub bap) with the Korean red sauce (cho go chu Jang). It comes with rice on the bottom, topped with sashimi, lettuce, shredded imitation crab meat, and lots of masago. Mix in the sauce to spicy level of your liking and mmmm enjoy! I love their cucumber side dish (similar to Korean style banchan) so much! I usually ask for refills because I eat so much of it with my meal. Mmm mm mmM! read more

Always love Midori. The Dynamite Shrimp is a delicious combo of spices and deep fry and something I always get. The maki rolls are delicious and you can see Chef Robert making them right from your table. We also had veggie tempura which was flavorful and delicious. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the city of Chicago. The Roberto Special roll might not be a totally traditional roll, but that's the one constant menu item I can't refrain from getting every visit. It's that good. Their nigiri is delicious & so are their signature maki rolls. Their special maki rolls are all 10/10, you're pretty safe with anything on this menu. The staff is so friendly & personable, it feels like you're at a family members dinner table every time you go there. Restaurant is big & never too crowded so I've honestly never waited for a table here no matter how big the party was. I recommend this place whenever someone asks where to get sushi in Chicago. read more

First time there. Service was good and food came out quickly. Ordered the Dragon and the Boston. Dragon was good, Boston was a little bland but huge portions. The appetizer's were decent, ordered the shrimp tempera but also a little bland. I will return and/or get takeout in the future to try other items since it's really close to my house. When you dine in, check your water glasses...mine and my bf's had lipstick ring on one side of the glass. read more
