The cochinita pibil taco was kinda boring... we put lots of that habanero sauce on there to make it more interesting. That habanero sauce can spruce up ANYTHING, it's amazing. I probably wouldn't come back just for the tortilla and habanero sauce though. It's located in the super-cute Mercado La Paloma. Their tamale is a must try!!! The tacos and main entrees taste very similar, but their tamale definitely taste the best overall. The building is easy to get to and parking is free. Unfortunately I did not have a great experience with the food after hearing raving good reviews. I waited a long time for my food to be served. When it was finally arrived it was practically all cold and did not seem made to order. The rice and beans were very plain with no flavor and the chicken was just ok. I was excited to try this place and was disappointed. The Thai Place in the same building is much better. It was also overpriced at $13.99 after taxes for the plate. I wouldn't eat here again. Chichen Itza was good, but I can't rate it as a five star joint. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was expecting the Cochinita Pibil to knock my socks off and it just doesn't reach that level. The cochinita pibil looks beautiful and comes with a side plate of rice, beans, and tortillas and a bottle of habanero hot sauce. Even though there was a line and I ended up sitting on the far side of the mercado, my food was served very quickly. For $12.99 you get a pretty healthy portion of food and I wasn't able to finish mine. The cochinita was very moist and tender and the pickled red onions offered a tang and crunchy contrast, but the dish didn't blow me away, and the tortillas, rice, and beans were pretty average. It was good enough that I'd recommend it and try it again, but it's not the type of meal that you need to go out of your way for. The horchata was very disappointing - very chalky, no cinnamon, not sweet, and generally bland. read more

This spot came as a recommendation on high praise from a friend. I stopped in with the lady, and we shot for the following deliciousness: Cochinita Pibil Tikin Xic Tamale - Brazo de Reina Potato Salad Agua Fresca - Guanabana This was definitely a bit of overkill on the ordering front, but provided us with many different flavors to indulge in... and very full bellies by the end. First, there are four different agua fresca flavors. You can ask for a sampler to see which one you like. The Guanabana was a flavor I hadn't tried, compared to horchata and jamaica. Very tasty. Next, the Cochinita Pibil & Tikin Xic are two of the signature dishes, and must tries. I can't recall every component to each dish... but the C.P. is some form of slow-roasted pork soaked in a delicious au-jus-esque sauce, and the T.X. is a lightly breaded fillet of white fish on a bed rice, a different sauce, and accompanied by oranges, pear (I think), and some greens. The two came with rice, beans, and blazing hot corn tortillas. The C.P. was extra savory, roasty goodness. It became 3 tacos. The T.X. was a unique array of flavors... a perfect level of crisp in the light breading, a tasty sauce to smother it through, and the combination with the fruits, made for a tantalizing mouth experience. The tamale cuts were tasty, though filling and were prioritized last (aside from the potato salad that I didn't partake in). I look forward to stopping back and trying some more of Chichen Itza's unique offerings, as well as some of the other food spots in the same market. read more

Service is good and although it's been full the two times I've been here service is efficient and quick. Top quality food. There is no Yucatán restaurant in Los Angeles like Chichen Itzá. Trust me I tried other Yucatán restaurants that opened up here n there and they could never top this restaurant. When I moved to MtWashington we were exited that there was a restaurant in highland park that was like Chichen Itzá. This is a great place to come with a larger group because there are a good number of tables and places to sit. I came with 5-6 other people and we all found a place to sit at. I ordered the Poc Chuc, which came with this zesty pork, avocado, black beans, pickled red onions, and warm corn tortillas. It was such a good mix of different flavors and toppings. You can make little wraps with the tortillas, meat, and all the condiments. Once you order, you sit down at a table with a number and they bring the food to you! The ceviche is really fresh and gets served with chips. The habanero salsa is everything they say it is. It's awesome. Really incredibly good. But man, is it scorching hot. I had maybe the equivalent to about two tablespoons with my chips and food and my mouth was on fire. Sigh, I just can't handle hot spices like I use too. Sucks getting old. But man, it's so tasty! My fish tacos are awesome. Super, super crunchy. Really good. You get two tacos with an order and all this food for breakfast was definitely filling. So good that I went back and ordered the cochinita to go and later on for dinner it settled down well in my stomach. Amazing authentic Mexican cuisine! Learned about this restaurant after we saw it on TV on one of the food network shows and we knew we had to try it. It was a bit of a drive for us but totally worth it. This place is located within a plaza with other restaurants and stores. They specialize in food from Yucatán, Mexico which is Southern Mexican cuisine. A lot of the dishes are not what one would be used to (the typical Tex mex stuff), this is the real deal! We ordered the panuchos, which is one of the items that they featured on the show- absolutely delicious, it's a fried tortilla with bean pure, turkey, avocado and lettuce- must try! We also had the longaniza asada and the cochinita pibil which was delicious (Mexican style pulled pork). For drinks we had the Agua de Chaya since we had never tried it before, it had a very interesting and unique flavor. Lastly we ordered some tamales to go for dinner- amazing! Overall it was a great dining experience, loved the unique and delicious flavors! We'll definitely be back. read more

We had the Cochinita Pibil and Pollo Asado and both were delicious. The meat was very moist and flavorful and everything is reasonably priced. On other visits, we tried the papaduzul, which is filled with hard boiled eggs. It is beautifully plated but a little plain for me. We also had the panuchos, which is a shredded turkey taco on an open faced fried corn tortilla shell. This was also kind of plain. Chichen itza's homemade hot sauce really helped add flavor to these two dishes. I wouldn't order these items again. This place serves really good food in a food court like plaza near USC. This place is located in a hole in a wall cultural food market, kinda similar to Grand Central Market. I was very excited to come to this place, given that this place was inexpensive, as well as due to the influence of yelp reviews that I read upon coming here. We ended up ordering the ceviche, panuchos, chicken vaporcito tamale, chicharrones tacos, and cochinita tacos. In total, our bill came out to be $40. The meat seemed to have a fishy flavor to it except for the chicharrones. The fishy flavor is strongest in the chicken panuchos and the cochinita tacos. The best thing we tried was the tamale. The tamale was coated in a sauce that actually reminded us of the chef boyardee sauce! Overall, every dish we tried seemed to lack flavor and was very tasteless. The meat was very dry as well. We didn't even end up finishing our food, not because we ordered too much for 2, but because the food was very underwhelming and started to feel unsettling to our stomach. I expected a lot from this place to the it being highly reviewed, and it's praise for being flavorful, but I think this may have been some of the worst foods I have tried in awhile. read more
