Chilaquiles are my favorite breakfast food and these did not disappoint! I got the chilaquiles with green sauce and tomato sauce and let me tell you, that tomato sauce was INSANE. The green sauce has a significant tang to it so the two really balanced each other out. Next time I'll definitely add a protein as well, but this bowl of chilaquiles was delicious! I also had a Jamaica lemonade which was great, it had a nice kick/tang to it. They make everything in house - the chips, their meats, everything. They have a solid, limited menu, and I can't wait to try other items. It's a small restaurant but they make you feel like you're home. The gentlemen at Tenampal are so welcoming, they give so much attention to each customer, they really take care of you. They constantly check in on you to make sure you're happy without being overbearing. As far as service goes, this experience was within the top 3 experiences I've had at a restaurant in my entire life just in terms of how welcoming they were. I can't believe I didn't find Tenampal sooner. This hidden little scratch kitchen in Boyle Heights is exactly the kind of place that reminds me why I love trying local restaurants. Parking is street-only, but trust me, it's worth the hunt. From the moment we walked in, it felt like the entire kitchen welcomed us. The energy was warm and inviting, and both servers we interacted with were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to guide us through the menu. To drink, I ordered the limonada and my boyfriend got the jamaica, both refreshing and the perfect start to the meal. We kicked things off with the beans and chorizo topped with salsa macha, and wow. Absolutely incredible. The fresh-made chips sprinkled with cotija cheese were so good that we could barely stop eating them long enough to order the rest of our food. I went with the huevos rancheros in green sauce. The sauce can lean a little sweet, so I asked for it extra spicy and it was exactly what I was hoping for. My boyfriend ordered the green enchiladas with suadero, which our server told us had been made fresh that morning. The quality and care put into every dish really came through. Without exaggeration, Bourdain spent his whole career chasing what's here: the kind of food made by a family with genius instincts, who grinds, ferments, smokes, cures, and pickles to mouthwatering effect. It's nirvana. Every single time. I think I've had almost everything on the menu by now. Loved it all, without exception. My repeats have included the huevos rancheros and the huarache azul. Oh, the huarache! Blue corn masa, frijoles, suadero that melts in your mouth because of their patience with it (you can tell), all dressed with salsa macha negra and crema. A fried egg on top. It's fire. The flan con pecanas is Plato's ideal of flan. Silky and sumptuous. The texture from the pecans makes the whole thing feel like a love song. And by now, I've been here enough times to see the true warmth of the family behind the magic. **May 2026: Sunday Afternoon Visit** My friend and I were looking for an authentic hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop spot near the East Los Angeles Library, and this restaurant came up. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and since it was only about a 10-minute drive, it felt like the perfect choice. Parking can be a bit challenging, but we got lucky and found a spot on a nearby residential street. When we got there, it was a full house, so we were seated in the back since that's what was available. The restaurant itself is small, with seating for about five or six parties, and it proudly reflects its immigrant roots along with a strong emphasis on representation and inclusion. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive. One thing to note: the lighting inside is quite dim--we actually had to use our phone flashlight to read the menu. Not ideal, but we were on a time crunch and just happy to be seated. We ordered the Huarache Azul ($17) with a sunny-side-up egg (+$2) and the chilaquiles (+$1 for split sauce), and both dishes were generously portioned and beautifully presented. The Huarache Azul was something new for me. It leaned a bit on the spicier side--not overwhelmingly hot, but rich in seasoning. The meat was very tender, and the blue corn tortilla had a nice earthy flavor, though overall it felt a bit heavy for my taste. The chilaquiles, on the other hand, were excellent--great balance of crunch and softness, with the runny egg adding a rich texture. The salsa had just the right amount of spice and flavor, and I would definitely order this again. A nice touch: when you order water, they provide bottled water on the house. Overall, service was polite, and the staff came across as genuinely hardworking and passionate. The chile verde was a little on the sour side, something im not used to tasting when having verde, if it was less sour I think this place would be five stars forsuree!! We also got enchiladas (red and green) as well and felt the same way about the verde sauce. The huarache was good, I enjoyed the thick tortilla and the toppings but wish it had more salt to taste. We were welcomed very warmly by Anthony, who recommended us the chilaquiles, tacos dorados, omelette tinga de pollo, and a new coffee-horchata-esque drink which they'll call the choco olla! Upon tasting the food it is apparent that every menu item we had was prepared with immense attention and care; everything was made fresh, the cook on the chicken and omelette was juicy and tender, and the chilaquiles and tacos had the perfect amount of crisp, all while the accompanying sides/garnishes, chile de arbol sauce, and fermented hot sauce provided balancing textures and flavors that left me eating more.
