I've had this restaurant circled for a while but never actually followed through until today--and wow, what a mistake to wait this long. Hands down, one of my favorite restaurant experiences to date. One of my hesitations was always parking in DTLA, but that ended up being a non-issue. When we arrived, the staff let us know we could park right out front or in the single parking lane along the side of the restaurant, which was a huge relief. We were greeted by Juan (not sure if he's the owner or manager), and from the moment we walked in, he made us feel like family. The hospitality alone was outstanding. We ordered a few dishes because I wanted to try their most popular plates. We started with the ceviche--completely different from any ceviche I've had before, yet it stood head-to-head with the best I've tried. Absolutely incredible. Next was the Lomo Saltado, which was my first time having it, and the flavors were unreal. You can truly taste the quality in every bite. He came out personally and asked if it was our first time visiting, and right away you could tell how much he genuinely cares about his customers, his restaurant, and the quality of service they provide. Juan took the time to share some of the history of the restaurant, which has been around for over 45 years, and how it has evolved throughout that time. What stood out to me most was how much appreciation he showed for his staff and chef, many of whom have been with the restaurant for over 20 years. He spoke about them with a lot of gratitude and made it clear that he sees them as a major part of the restaurant's success. He was also extremely knowledgeable about the food. He explained some of their recipes, what makes them special, and how they use authentic Peruvian ingredients. You could really hear the pride and passion he has for maintaining the quality and authenticity of what they serve. He also shared how social media, Yelp, Instagram, TikTok, and especially the support of customers have helped the business continue to grow. What I appreciated was how humble and grateful he was about it. After 45 years in business, you could still see how much every person who walks through the door means to him. A couple minutes later he came back to take my order, but I am indecisive and needed more time and he was super kind and patient! I ended up sitting at the bar and ordering to go when the owner Juan came out we started conversing. He asked me how I found the place and if it was my first time and he was so kind and personable. I love when owners or managers have this warm energy to them! I paid $13 cash for three tacos (al pastor) which I'll be honest is a little more than I would normally spend on tacos, but they were a really good size, double tortilla, and delicious, probably one of the best i've had in a long time and the service was so nice that I would go back and do it again.
