    Bistec a la Yucateca-
    Chloe N.

This place is located in a food hall with other authentic mexican restaurants, which offers a bustling local experience. Chichen itza offers a great menu with local Mexican dishes. Service was quick but this place is mostly self-service. We picked the bistec and enjoyed the Mexican flavors from all aspects of the dish-from the beans, steak, to the plantains. You can taste the authenticity from the flavors and texture of the dish. My one note was that our bistec was a bit overdone and came out on the harder end. Would recommend for authentic Mexican flavors, and when we come back would want to try their pork dishes!

The restaurant is located within the Mercado LA Paloma, straight ahead from the main entrance, at the back wall. (If there is a line coming out of the building, you don't have to stand in it, because it is for another restaurant. So simply bypass the line to enter the market and the food court.) My friend who is Mexican American chose this place for us for lunch because it is a bit different from the Mexican food that most Americans are used to. It is food from the Yucatan area of Mexico and therefore uses a different spice profile and has a lot of pork based and root vegetable dishes. Everything was delicious. I wanted to try a lot more things on the menu, but my stomach can only hold so much. Looking for another opportunity to visit and order different items on a future trip to Los Angeles.

We had a little family outing and couldn't think of a place to eat before heading back home (beat traffic) hubby checked in yelp and our first choice was here and well he was craving chicken that day so why not give this place a try. We found a place to park outside on the street, but they do have their little parking lot and I believe you do have to pay for it. This little restaurant is inside like a mini indoor eatery plaza which you have variety of restaurants to try but when we showed up, only two were open so this place was the one we wanted to try. It is definitely not an express but the food flavors won't disappoint. You order and eat in, you find a table and put the number stick on the table and they will bring you the food. They do TAKE outs as well. We enjoyed our evening here.

This place is inside the Mercado La Paloma, containing James Beard-nominated Michelin starred food stalls. It's an L.A. art center and culinary adventure dining here. The Mercado is in an industrial area on the other side of the 110 Freeway in the shadow of The California Scuence Center, BMO Stadium, and USC. HINT #1: After 5 pm. Park in the free DMV overflow parking lot,...entrance is thru the main parking in front of the Mercado, drive to the righthand corner to enter thru an open wire gate/fence.. HINT #2: Enjoy the huge wall mural painted by E.E. King. Too bad there's no freestanding legend to help you identify the famous faces and the not-so-famous faces depicted hete. Half the fun...also would be nice to know a bit about the artist and creation of the mural...but it's impressive... mysterious and whimsical. Now for the good . I got the cochinita pibil meal, carnitas Yucatan style, with black beans and rice . also container of hot corn tortillas that are thick and chewy. Had the feel of homemade, and handpressed, not the packaged storebought kind. My dish is beautfully presented on a banana leaf....This is subjective but I thought the pork was too salty, my companion tasted it and agreed it was salty but in a good way. Still I couldn't eat much because of the salt. (3) I enjoyed the pickled onions on the pulled pork, as well as the fluffy white rice, the black beans and the corn tortillas...tortillas were so nice, thick and chewy (5)....my friend ordered two sets of different tacos, a la carte, four in total....he loved them, cleaned his plate. (5) And mine too. Service...friendly servers deliver the hot food fast. If you need anything, you fetch it yourself. It's a food stall...they give you a number on a metal stand, the food finds you. Seating is colorful and the turnover is good so I've always found a table nearby. By the way the Agua fresca (jamaica) was perfect and delicious delicious delicious. (5) I borrowed a lime from my friends fish tacos and squeezed it into the Jamaica, try it, loved the way it cut the sweetness...Jamaica can be too sweet, but that's what is yum about the drink. Double yum with lime. Add it if you get Jamaica. This was my friends first time here, next day he told some clients about his taco experience, so I'm glad he enjoyed and decided to spread the word. Yay!!

I have been going to Chichen Itza for years when I was working at USC. Now it is only when I am in the area so it is now considered a treat. I ordered Poc Chuc which is grilled pork shoulder served with their homemade longaniza chorizo, pickled red onions, avocado, puréed black beans, shredded cabbage, and corn tortillas. The pork is very flavorful from the seasonings and the charring from a wood fire. The pickled red onions were a good accompaniment as the mild vinegar tartness balanced the richness of the grilled meat. I also ordered an Agua de Chaya which was refreshing and citrusy from all the fruit juices. Parking was difficult this time in the small lot due to the popularity of Holbox, their sister restaurant, but I managed to get a spot after the fifth drive around. The food court was very busy on the Friday I was there so finding an available table was also difficult. I would recommend either going earlier or after the noontime lunch crowd.

From the chef behind Holbox, this restaurant is where everything started and was handed down from his father. Delicious food and affordble prices. The coffee was good as well. Tamal de colado was great with the smooth masa. The fish tacos were good too. Different from the fish tacos at holbox. Free street parking. Pay to park in the lot.

We came here for Holbox but the line was crazy, so we decided to give this place a try. Glad we did. The dishes were different from your typical mexican restaurant. We enjoyed everything we ordered except for the tamales. It's not bad but it's not the typical tamales at other mexican restaurants (which I like better). The communal tables were okay. It seems like a somebody spilt drinks and nobody came to clean it up so there was a puddle of liquid under the table. Service was great. They made and brought the food to our table in no time.

I stopped by for Holbox but the line was wayyy too long so wanted to look around the food hall to see what else was there. Chichen Itza caught my eye immediately and to my surprise, I found out the chef who founded Holbox used to actually work there with his father! The food was all delicious and I really enjoyed every bite. The ceviche was fresh, and the bistec dish was so juicy and not dry at all. I like the beans and onions that came with it too. Would be an amazing touch if they also had avocado! My favorite item was the fish taco. The fish was so flaky but also had a lot of meat inside. The toppings paired perfectly too.

Was kinda and quick ordering food came out quick even though it was a super packed and busy day. Food was great! I really enjoyed my tacos and fried plantains! We sat outside which was nice and sunny with a light breeze.

Solid pollo asado tacos x2 & plantains for less than $15. Friendly service. Good vibes -- inside a market.

I dream about this place! Unfortunately, I don't live that close and driving on the 110 can mean a quick 10 minute drive turns into 30+. But you know what, I'll take the drive to get the chicharron tacos and their fried plantains. Chichen Itza is located inside Mercado la Paloma. The mercado is always busy even when it's slow so if you come during peak eating hours expect to wait, and that's okay. Ordering is super easy. Just walk up to the counter or wait in line to order. You'll be given a table number to take with you. Since the mercado is used by several other shops the seating is "first come, first serve" so don't be surprised if you sit family style with other people, it's fine and kinda expected. Once I sat at the table a server came and dropped off a bottle of the restaurant's habanero sauce. The sauce is perfect, equal parts heat and savory! I'm a creature of habit so I always get the same thing, tacos de chicharron! There's something so damn delicious about how crunchy, perfectly salty, every bite is. A salsa of avocado, tomato, and onion lightly garnishes the taco. It's so well balanced. Once I was done I cleared my own table and took my plates back to the counter and dropped off the salsa. This place deserves all the love for serving up quality comfort food!

If you walk into the Mercado and see a line long enough to require a snack for the wait, don't panic. Most of those people are actually queuing up for one of the other hot spots in the plaza. Bypass the crowd, keep your head high, and march straight to Chichen Itza. It is a casual, unpretentious sanctuary of Mayan flavors where the vibe is bustling, and lively. I ordered the Pollo Asado. It's boneless, grilled to perfection, and marinated in an achiote and sour orange juice combo that makes standard grilled chicken look like a sad, flavorless mistake. It came with rice, black beans, and red onions, but the real supporting actors were the fried plantains. They were the holy trinity of texture. They were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and sweet enough to make me consider ordering a second plate just for dessert. The plate only comes with 3 bites of the plantains.i really wanted a mountain of them. My coworkers opted for the Cochinita Pibil sandwiches, and while I was busy having a moment with my plantains, I couldn't help but notice how tender and juicy that pork looked. The portions are solid, the food is incredibly well-prepared.It's easily one of the most satisfying meals you can find. If you want authentic, flavorful food this is your spot.

Don't let this food court fool you. The food is amazing! The flavors are spot on dare I say authentic? Like what your abuelita would cook at home. The service is fast. Yet the everything tasters fresh. You do have to bring your patience because there will be a long line, but once you place your order you won't have to wait too long. Pro tip have a friend scout a table for your while you order. Tables are first serve. So if you are up for the hustle and bustle of a lively of a food court with delicious food this will be a great dinning experience and great ambiance!

When I first arrived, I gave them the name of our reservation, and the staff had no idea what I was talking about. We were a party of 6, yet they seated us at a tiny table that was clearly not appropriate for our group. When it was time to order, my husband very clearly told the waiter which pasta he wanted and even showed him a picture of the item on the menu. The waiter looked at it and agreed. My food came out, but my husband's food never did. We eventually found out that his order was never even put in. What made it worse was when the waiter came out saying, "Oh my God, I thought you said you didn't want it." Everyone at the table looked at him completely confused because my husband had literally told him what he wanted and showed him the menu item. Instead of simply acknowledging the mistake and fixing it, we were left waiting. On top of that, trying to get anyone's attention was nearly impossible. We had to repeatedly try to get someone's attention just to get basic service. Then there was another issue with the entrance fee. My sister-in-law had messages showing that we were told that if we ate at the restaurant, we would no longer have to pay the entrance fee. We showed those messages to the woman handling the wristbands, but instead of looking into it or speaking to someone who could clarify the situation, she simply said, "I don't know, you have to pay." No attempt was made to investigate or resolve the issue. After everything that happened, they still added a tip to the bill, despite the extremely poor service we received. Overall, this was one of the most frustrating restaurant experiences I've had. Poor communication, poor service, lack of organization, and no effort to make things right. I definitely will not be recommending this place to anyone, and we will not be returning.

The menu is simple but seemingly well thought out. Prices were good for LA. I ordered a carne asada burrito 2.0 and a medium cucumber lime agua Fresca for less than $20 total. At the time we came in, the restaurant was virtually empty, which was a relief because this location is quite small. Food came out quick, and someone brought it out to where we were sitting. It comes with some radish, a grilled green onion, a lime, and two of their salsas (a salsa verde and what I believe is their chiltepin salsa). Right away, you can tell the quality of the tortilla from the feel and the slightly translucent look of it. Upon giving it a taste, I'd say it lived up to the hype. The tortilla was flavorful and chewy, and the meat inside had a fresh smoky flavor from the grill. While I prefer refried beans in a burrito, I could tell the beans were cooked well too. Altogether, I have no complaints. Is it a life changing burrito like some make it out to be? Maybe not. To me, it tasted like a few very well executed ingredients put together rather than a transformative dish. But for the price, I think it's very impressive. You just don't get a tortilla like that anywhere. The agua Fresca was very good too, and with prices of aguas frescas pushing $12+ at some places, this felt like a great deal. I would say I recommend the pepino limon over the coconut horchata, which was just a bit bland.

They were excited to try something different, as they don't have many Mexican food options where they live, and I wanted to expand their culinary horizons. We were greeted with complimentary chips - some were drizzled with mole and Oaxacan cheese, which we requested refills of, and others were served with red and green salsas. The green salsa had a nice kick to it. For our meal, we shared two large dishes: the Festival de Moles ($53.00) and the Tlayuda Guelaguetza ($27.50). The Tlayuda Guelaguetza, which is also called a Mexican pizza, was layered with bean and chicharron spread, queso fresco, cabbage, quesillo, beef tasajo, pork Cecina, and pork chorizo. While I've always wanted to try Tlayuda, this one wasn't good, and I wouldn't recommend it. The pork chorizo was particularly unappetizing, and neither my parents nor I enjoyed the dish, feeling it was a waste of money. The Festival de Moles ($53.00) featured four individual moles - negro, rojo, coloradito, and estofado - with a choice of shredded chicken breast or pork spare ribs. We opted for a mix of both and found this dish to be excellent, and we would definitely order it again. They were very impressed with the moles, and enjoyed them for the first time. The only minor complaint was a lack of tortillas to dip with the mole, though they did provide some rice. We ordered several drinks, which significantly increased the bill. I was surprised we spent $200 on lunch for three people with only two meals. I started with the Pasion De Oaxaca ($16.00), a mezcal, tequila, passion fruit, grapefruit juice, and tajin cocktail that was excellent, perfectly balanced, strong, but not too sweet. For my second drink, I had the refreshing Aquas Frescas - Jamaica ($6), which was perfect after my meal. I even took it to go, and they kindly provided a cup. My dad ended up taking it, as he needed it with his medication (they're old!). My parents, who were trying mole for the first time, were very impressed and really enjoyed it. Our only minor complaint was the lack of tortillas to dip in the mole, although they did provide some rice. The food took a little longer to come out, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. I imagine this type of cuisine is labor-intensive, and you can't rush the cooking time for mole. You just have to trust the process! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Guelaguetza Restaurante and will definitely be back. I can see why they're a James Beard Award-winning restaurant; you can get authentic Oaxacan flavors in LA! We're lucky to live here.

Amazing food and drinks and there is live music but it is way too loud in there. The place is huge…read moreand gets packed but I think the speakers need to be turned down. Good for big groups but I don't really recommend if you actually want to have conversation. Got the enchiladas campesinas and mango slushy both of my visits there, it's a huge serving so had leftovers for another meal each time.

I loved everything I got! The ERIZO aka UNI SCALLOP mix was so fresh and seasoned to perfection. The CEVICHE DE ATUN aka BLUEFIN TUNA CEVICHE came right from the giant tuna hanging in the fridge. These dishes were bright and exactly what I hoped for! The PULPO A LAS BRASAS aka octopus was well cooked and had a yummy sauce on it. Top it off with fresh tomatoes, onions and hand made tortillas and got an amazing meal! The GUAC AND CHIPS and the CHURROS were great bookends to the meal! Everything was perfect.

I ordered the ceviche mixto (4.5/5), whose sauce provided a nice tang with a bit of spice (some peppercorn perhaps?). The baja fish taco (2.5/5), on the other hand, was disappointing. I tasted mostly the breading, which closely resembled a spice mix used in fried chicken, and the spicy sauce was quite overwhelming relative to the gentler, sweeter nature of the fish. On the plus side, the mayo accompaniment was quite lovely. I must say their tortillas were their best offering. Crunchy, light, and fresh. You could really taste the smokiness from the grill. All in all, their items are slightly on the pricier side for the value that is given.
