I was a bit confused when I pulled up to Chick-a-Boom or so my Google maps told me. I walked up to the building and that's when I saw on the door it said Chick-A-Boom. Once inside I was given a menu(I was doing takeout) and it had both Mexican food and also the chicken options. I decided to go with the chicken slims and green beans. The girl had to check if they had green beans and unfortunately they didn't so I did the baked beans instead. The beans were a good choice and the slims were perfect. Hot and fresh. Breading to chicken ratio was exactly right. I used BBQ sauce. They were juicy and I wished I had ordered more. I'll definitely visit again. And I forgot to mention the last part. This is a unique restaurant. It is co-located with the Mexico City Grill. You sit in the same restaurant, you order from the same server, and you park in the same lot. The only difference is, you order from a different menu. I had to request it. One cool thing is that they still bring you out chips and salsa, like most Mexican food restaurants. There is tons of parking for the strip mall that this place is located and the dinning area is huge. They offer a discount for police, fire, and military. Thank you for your service. They also have some lunch specials. They have different sized tenders from jumbos (the big boys), slims (half the jumbos), and big bites. There are 6 sauces to choose from to dip your tenders in. I am partial to the boom boom sauce, with honey mustard a close second. They also have sides such as fries, mac & cheese, green beans, cabbage slaw, corn, potato salad, and baked beans to choose from to accompany your chicken. I ordered one of the lunch specials, some of their tenders with some fries and baked beans. It was a ton of food. I literally got a plate full of fries. Everything was delicious. The tenders were fresh and flavorful. The beans were on point and fries and just fries, but they were good anyway. Service here is friendly and very helpful. The prices are reasonable. I paid like $11 for my meal including a drink. So, if you are head here and you wind in a Mexican restaurant, you are probably in the right place. You just have to to request the Chick-A-Boom menu. Chick-A-WTF?? So, to start off with, the restaurant no longer has it's own storefront. Go to the mexican restaurant and ask for the Chick-A-Boom menu. It goes down hill from there. But not entirely. I got a 3 strip meal and the chicken was, as advertised, juicy, well seasoned, lightly breaded and cooked golden brown. Just be aware that they were out of their most popular sauce - the bourbon sriracha. I also ordered two sides. The green beans with bacon (the ingredient that they make so much about) and the mac and cheese. Don't bother looking for the cheesy mashed potatoes, that's not on the menu anymore. The green beans with bacon had, well, nicely grilled onions probably cooked on a fajita skillet. They were decent, but there was zero bacon to be had. The mac and cheese was an abomination. The noodles were overcooked and as limp as a stretched out tube sock and were bathed in, well, some sort of watery white sauce. In a mexican restaurant of all places, they apparently ran out of cheese. The only thing they were willing to do was to take off the abomination and "cheese" side. Which, by the way, was $8 - just like all the other sides. If you go: skip all the sides. I think the mexican restaurant cooks are on strike at the sudden increase in the number of dishes they have to prepare. They only do justice to the chicken because, well, they have to. Chicken was amazing! Juicy, flavorful and filling. We ordered the skinnies which were the perfect amount of meat vs breading. Green beans were tasty and the toast was good. The mashed potatoes seemed to be instant but they were still good. The fries were good as well, they were steak fries! The sauces were okay. The bbq was good, the buffalo was just okay, the ranch was different for sure, and the boom boom sauce was interesting not sure what it's made of. People seemed nice. Ordered take out from here last week, mixed feelings. Ordering was easy and the person on the phone was helpful and answered all of our questions. When we went to pick up the order, service was very slow and the cashier was on the phone. The chicken was delicious. The jumbo tenders are huge and have a nice flavored breading. The sauces were tasty, nothing special (BBQ/Honey Mustard/Boom sauce). The toast was perfect. But unfortunately, the praise stops there. We ordered 4 sides and were really underwhelmed by all of them. The potatoes, which were instant, were probably the best side dish - but the gravy was too thick and a non-starter for me. I was hopeful for the mac-and-cheese but it really lacked flavor and was fairly mushy. Fries were OK - nothing special. The baked beans were bland. Dont even try. I was looking for a local business that had good fried chicken, as I was craving it for my birthday meal. With all of the COVID stuff still running amok, I made sure to reach out and ensure they were up and running. They responded by saying that yes they were open. Confirmed that they would be open around the time I would order, again, yes. So, went through DoorDash to order for pickup. All excited as it was my birthday meal, I had made sure to splurge a little (with no income currently, 30 bucks is a splurge for me) and get a family meal. All went well in the ordering process on Doordash, got my confirmation it was being prepared and would be ready in 18-22 minutes. Having just had major hip surgery, I had my mother and boyfriend go over to pick it up. My mom calls and said "um, we have an issue, they aren't open" to which I immediately was confused. She said there was no one there, lights were off, no sign that anyone was there. Checked on my order via DD, said it was ready to pick up. My boyfriend called numerous times, it wouldn't even make a full ring before the call was ended. No way to contact them. I tried to message them via Facebook, thinking maybe their phone was messed up. They read my message but no response. Managed to contact DoorDash and have my order canceled and my money is in the process of being sent back. However, my birthday meal is ruined. Doordash even tried to contact them numerous times, nothing. I tried to reach out again the following morning, to which it appears I've been blocked from their page, or they have deleted their facebook. Either way, very unprofessional way to handle this. I had looked forward to this for the whole week, and now I'm beyond upset about it. My wife works at a bank where she was brought some samples from this place awhile back when they were first opening, and she loved what she had. She couldn't quite remember the name, so since that point I have, and will continue to refer to this place as Mother Cluckers. Having said that, this was okay. You get a decent amount of food. For $7.50 I got two large chicken fingers (called jumbos), a side of fries, another side, and a 12 oz. can of pop. Positives: The fries were very good. They are steak fries. They were really the only thing I got that made me go, "Mmm, this is really good." You do have the option of substituting another side for them, and I don't think there's an up-charge. The other positive was that the can of Coke Zero was very cold. The chicken was good. Not great. I had two jumbos. They come standard with a Texas flavoring to them and then you get a sauce on the side. I got mine naked, meaning no flavoring other than my sauce. The BBQ was good. The negatives: The mac and cheese was gross. This is just personal preference, but it was very peppery. Not even just ground pepper, but big pieces of it. If not for that it probably would be really good. If I go back, I'll try the mashed potatoes or baked beans. My wife got the corn and was bummed to learn that it's just corn, not corn on the cob. And it wasn't great, either. No sweetness to it. I neither recommend nor warm against this place. To some, I'm sure it's amazing. To me, it was just okay. I called today to place an order and when I asked a question about adding to the order, I was told that I couldn't add any more chicken to it. I told Kristen that I've ordered that way in the past. She promptly informed me that there's new management because the last manager "cost the owner a lot of money" and that I shouldn't have been allowed to order that way. Best place for fried boneless chicken to take home and enjoy. For $25 we got the 16 slims meal that came with 2 sauces, our choice of 2 sides and we added another side for that price too. Showed up today to try this place out as I saw the billboard on the road. I arrived around 8:40 in the evening. As I approached, I saw the employee inside vacuuming the floor. I reached for the door and it was locked. The employee said they were closed for the evening but the sign on the door said they were open till 9. So, I'm torn. When I pick the review of "meh, I've experienced better"; I am comparing that to chick-a-boom itself. When chick-a-boom first opened they brought some samples to my work and the chicken was DELICIOUS. So moist and soft it nearly melted in my mouth. After that I've been a fairly consistent chick-a-boom customer; ordering a couple of times for lunch at work and a few times at home for dinner. I've always gotten the whipped potatoes with gravy as a side and they are okay. I've had the fries as well and they are usually good. My 4 year old has always enjoyed ordering the food; fondly calling it "chicka-chicka-boom-boom." She's a mac and cheese fan, but she's waivered back and forth on chicka's mac-n-cheese. Her first experience with it was not good because of the massive amount and size of the pepper. She loves the fries, though! Today she tried the texas toast and loved it. I've also tried the baked beans which are pretty good, but also sometimes have the large pepper in them and they ALWAYS spill out and get everything sticky. I tried the green beans for the first time a couple of weeks ago and they were amazing. I could tell they were fresh, cooked low and slow and they were delicious, country style wonderfully flavored green beans. I could've eaten those for days. The last time I ordered chick-a-boom was two weeks ago; I ordered it for my lunch and then got it for my daughters dinner (it was a long, 13 hour day at work). The first problem was the online ordering. It had been malfunctioning and I ordered it for delivery, but it went through as pick up which caused some minor issues including the food being done well before I got to it. The lady told me it was placed in the "hot box" or "food warmer"; something along those lines. When I did get the food, it had a very odd taste that nothing I've ever ordered from chick-a-boom has ever had before. It's a taste that is hard to describe, but it's something that is obvious and it clearly is something that the food shouldn't taste like. It is NOT a good taste. The first time I chalked it up to the food having to had been placed in the warmer and the length of time it took for me to actually get the food. However, today my daughter and I ordered food for dinner and we got to chick-a-boom to pick it up within 20 minutes of ordering it. They say that all food is cooked fresh at the time of the order. I believe that used to be true, but I am not so sure anymore. I think that may be part of the problem here; part of the weird taste in the food. I can't be sure, but one way to try to describe this weird taste is to say it does seem like a taste could be from the food sitting in a really old, funky steamer of some sorts. It's not a smoky flavor, it's not a steamed flavor; it's almost like a weird chemical flavor... sorry, that's the best way I can explain it. It's just very weird and not the normal chick-a-boom food that I was used to having. Today, there was no time for them to put our food in the warmer or hot box and if they did; it means they are not cooking the food fresh to order. I've also noticed the chicken is not nearly as soft and moist as it used to be. Not even close. It's actually kind of dry and tough. Today, I got the green beans again and they are DISGUSTING. There are literally large, wide slivers of onions that are bigger than the green beans themselves all throughout the bowl and there is ZERO flavoring. Even taking the onions out and adding in some salt did not help because that bizarre taste is just too overpowering in the food today. Yes, the weird taste is also in the sides; not just the chicken. So, I am not sure what has happened at chick-a-boom, not sure what has changed, but there is an obvious decline in the quality of food and it's pretty sad because in the beginning the food was so incredibly delicious. Because of having this second experience with the taste in the food, I am not sure I will go back to chick-a-boom. *Sad Face* I hope chick-a-boom figures out what the issue is and fixes it... and I wonder if anyone else has noticed this issue...??? read more
