We ate here frequently when they came to Woodburn. Then twice received chicken nuggets that were hard and overcooked. Told that that is impossible because the fry time is on a timer. Now we eat our chicken elsewhere. I didn't appreciate being called a liar in a round about way. Thought they were all about customer service. Other items were fine.

Came in today at 8:10 like usual. Immediately told half their menu was, surprise surprise, not available, and that we could not dine in despite being open for another 50 minutes. Everything went about as usual until my daughter asked if she could get a refill, like she has multiple times before, while we were waiting on the food. The girl running the register, who somehow managed to get our 2-item order wrong three times while taking it, refused to allow her a refill. When I asked why not, she stated it was store policy that refills were only allowed for guests dining in. When I pointed out that she was not allowing us to dine in, she smuggly replied "that is correct." Rather than demand a manager, who presumably wadn't present since it was only the two teenagers running the kitchen and register, we've decided this will just be our last trip and advise all of you other yelpers of the substandard service this place has made a practice of providing.

The chicken fingers are huge, much larger than the usual size you get in other places. The serving of fries is also huge. The drink that comes with the combo is small. Diminutive, even. It was too much food for me, but I didn't know how big the chicken fingers are here, because I had never eaten here before. Same with the fries. Two of me (and I'm not a small guy) would have been happy with what I ordered. I ordered Cajun sauce to go with my chicken and that was a terrible mistake. I am from New Orleans, so as you might imagine, I've eaten a lot of Cajun food in my life, and the sauce did not resemble anything Cajun I've ever had. I daresay it tasted more like Mexican hot sauce than anything else, but mostly, it just tasted bad. And not that hot, either. I went back up to the register and paid for another two containers of sauce, and this time the selection was more mainstream, that is, honey barbecue. Which was good. Not great, but, you know, good. The dining area is very basic, very spartan, some inexpensive chairs and tables and a muted flat-screen TV (with closed-caption) on the wall. The single staff person at the register was very solicitous, too much so, frankly. Cloyingly nice, almost to the point of being obsequious. But perhaps I am just too jaded and cynical, other people may love the immediate high level of friendliness and familiarity. Country music was playing loudly while I was eating. After a while I realised that it was not actually country music, but rather, Christian pop music. If you're on the Pepsi side of The Great Soda Schism, you'll be happy here. If you're on the Coke side, you're not going to be happy. I like Coca-Cola, so I ordered a lemonade, which turned out to be not lemonade, really, but water with almost no lemon taste in it. It came out of the dispenser, so maybe the tank was almost empty or something, I don't know. It was water with the faintest taste of lemon. That's what I got for a drink. There are a great many restaurants that do wonderful things with a chicken. The chicken-lover landscape offers up an embarrassment of riches. With that in mind, I think I'd pick another spot for fried chicken. Not because the chicken was bad (it was not), but other things about the place were not particularly appealing to me, and it's not as if the main drawing card here (which is the bird) is so completely fantastic that you brush all the shortcomings aside. The chicken isn't that good, you know? It's good, but not so good as to make you forget about everything else.

The staff at the counter was friendly and helpful. It was fairly busy on a weekend afternoon but they seemed well staffed. Everything moved along quickly. They even had people actively keeping the dining area clean, wiped down, and tidy. That made finding a clean spot to sit so much easier during the busy lunch hour. We ordered a chicken sandwich combo and a nugget combo. One of the combos included a pie as well. Everything came out quickly and served hot. My favorite side with chicken is always mashed potatoes with gravy and these, fast food style potatoes covered in gravy, didn't disappoint! Great flavor in the gravy! The nuggets and sandwich were both very good. Not overly greasy and not buried in breading. I'm not a fan of hot pocket type pies but my husband said it was very good. A surprising chicken spot discovery while out and about.

Think about all the gross fingers that have touched the screen the next time you handle your fast food. Chicken sandwich was no better than any fast food version, maybe worse because of the cheap bun. And of course it includes the standard Orange sauce found on any chicken sandwich. Kudos to the Cheesy Cheddar fries, Adobo Rice, and Ube pie for variety. No towels in the clean bathrooms so you need to touch the door handle. Gross. One and definitely done.

Basilisk is another of those Portland restaurants I regularly visited on work trips to the city in…read morethe 2010s. It's been around 7 or 8 years since my last visit but I remember the fried chicken sandwiches coming with two thick, juicy, fried boneless thighs. I found it difficult to eat more than half a sandwich given the size and excess meat. Usually I would end up pulling one thigh out and saving it for later! I decided to visit again on a recent weekend trip to Portland, arriving for an early dinner at around 4:30 PM. It was surprisingly busy, with at least a quarter of the seats taken in the shared seating pool even though it was so early in the day. Luckily there wasn't a line to order and the food came out within 15 minutes. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) - Just as how I remembered, this sandwich is still huge with two breaded and fried thighs on a bed of lightly dressed, crunchy cole slaw. It's really tall and doesn't compress well due to the abundant crunchy elements throughout. There's the bun that's heavily toasted until extremely, almost aggressively, crisp and almost dark golden brown, absolutely doused in butter a la Texas toast. There are house pickles on the bottom bun, very quickly pickled such that it develops no acidity, but changes to that crunchy yet soggy pickle texture. The two chicken thighs are expertly breaded until full of crags and valleys, seasoned well, and fried until crisp. The crispy quality is of a lighter variety rather than a hard crunch, very delicate as compared to a typical flour based fried chicken dredge. The chicken is different from what I remembered. Instead of being juicy full thighs, almost an inch thick at the meatiest, these patties are thin, sad, like a single thigh butterflied and cut into fourths width-wise. The breading is far thicker than the chicken itself - in fact the chicken almost is an afterthought here, completely getting lost in all the breading and everything else in the sandwich. Seriously, look at some of the photos from other Yelpers taken in 2016 and 2017 and compare to my cross section photo. It's a huge difference. I bet it's a cost cutting measure and it certainly isn't an appreciated change. Maybe it's just a sign of the times - while the 2010s air waves thumped with 'All About That Bass," the thick thighs have now unfortunately been 2020s Ozempic zapped. The major downside of the sandwich is surprisingly the bun. It's by far the most dominant component of the sandwich. It's the crunchiest element and the butter flavor completely overwhelms the taste buds. This is why fried chicken sandwiches are usually served on soft and pillowy buns, or at least buns that are only lightly toasted, so the bread can focus on and cradle the crunch element rather than supersede it. This is the first time that I can recall a sandwich where the bun is the dominant entity. (3/5) Dandan Fries ($10) - These fries are deceptively filling. They're really snackable and give a distinct moreish quality. It's like a snack where I absentmindedly keep reaching in the bag for more and suddenly it's completely empty. The fries combine a somewhat lightly fried potato, a delicate crisp on the outside and an extremely fluffy almost fall-apart tender inside, with a nutty, spicy, and mouth tingly mala sauce. The sauce is thick, rich, filled with fatty goodness. It's actually a really good glue, adhering the crushed peanuts on the fries so well, nothing falls off while lifting the fries out of the bowl. I especially love the mini cornichons mixed into the fries. They add just a bit of sweetness and acidity that balances so well with the fatty dandan inspired sauce. Without them, I think the dish would feel far too rich. With them, the fries go down the gullet at a quick rate. (5/5) I can't help but feel a little disappointed at Basilisk. It's another one of those places that seems to have decided to sacrifice quality in order to keep prices relatively low. While I enjoyed the Dandan Fries, I'm not sure that's enough of a draw to get me to revisit. Bathrooms - Four unisex rooms shared with the other establishments in the building. Mac N Cheese Chicken - to start, the mac was deliciously cheesy, creamy, and plentiful. Great side for an order! Chopped chicken tenders however, were on the drier end. Still edible without a bev, but combining with the mac really helped. I'd be skeptical of the chicken tenders given this experience. BBQ Wings - these were more dry, both inside and out. Chicken wasn't as tender as some fast food spots. BBQ sauce was very light, almost like a dry rub. Sauce did not save the dry wings, bev appreciated if ordering this but also would skip. Dragonfruit Wings - while the chicken was on the drier side, the dragonfruit sauce made up for it. It's a sweeter sauce that doesn't taste much like dragonfruit, which admittedly is mild in flavor, but has the essence of fruit. They use more dragonfruit sauce than the BBQ as called out above, which helps a ton but the wings still lack the juiciness which is unfortunate.
