I've been coming here since I was a baby when we lived in Utah (my parents knew the owners as well and they were wonderful people). I have such fond memories here and +20 years later every time I visit from California I always make a stop here. I love their food - it's consistently delicious, fresh, and tastes the same every single time. I always get the chicken plate with half rice and salad and their chicken is always very tender and juicy. Their salad is always fresh and crispy and their rice is always always so fluffy and delicious. I love the yogurt side that comes with it too. I love this place so much and I always wish for it to operate. It's also a very healthy meal (depending on what you order of course) and it can be very balanced. It's on the smaller side so if it's busy you may not be able to find a seat but it's definitely worth the wait. It's very simple and relaxed inside the restaurant - that's how you can tell the food will be amazing because the main focus is on the food. Wow what happened here? My doordash delivery of my two chicken kabob rice combo sucked! The chicken was moist and delicious but bite size. Seriously downsize to a point it's comical. The chicken kabobs were small enough I could put a whole one in my mouth with rice and salad and still b able to chew comfortably. The rice was plentiful but didn't hold well as it blobbed together in the fridge. Two days later I still have left overs and that usually never happens from here so you know the food sucked. Because I have been eating here for 30 years, I've never left a review (as reviews weren't a thing when I first started coming here). Chicken express has been a staple for all of these years, with never a bad experience. I was surprised when the restaurant closed, but was delighted (although skeptical) when it reopened. Since reopening, I have visited fresh chicken express four times. There are some slight variations, but not all negative. I do prefer the rice they had before to the new recipe, but not enough to hurt my review. The food is always fresh and flavorful. And although the prices have increased (as they have everywhere), you definitely get your money's worth. The plates come out piled with delicious food! The place needed a remodel 20 years ago and it's still waiting for that remodel. The chicken pieces have been getting smaller and smaller while the prices are going higher and higher. The rice is half cooked and not edible. Chicken was bland and not especially tasty at all. The salad is drenched in dressing and it's soggy. Save your money and skip on this dump. Well a friend referred this place to me. The fries were bomb and the kabob was a decent size, but the pita bread was too small but great if your watching your carb intake lol. I didn't wait to long for my food so that was good. The salad dressing I was not to much of a fan of. The staff was nice and patient and waited for me to decide on what I wanted due to the fact I have never been there before. The food was edible but nothing to go out of your way for, especially if you're expecting flavorful authentic Mediterranean food. The pita bread was pretty bad compared to pretty much all other pita bread I've ever had, the rice was pretty plain with some seasoning sprinkled on top, the salad certainly wasn't close to any other Greek salad I've ever had but the ground beef kabob was decent and portion sizes were reasonable (although mostly rice). Maybe we're spoiled with options in Las Vegas but there's nothing that stood out here that would make me want to come back when I'm in Salt Lake City. I've been looking for good Mediterranean food in SLC since we moved here and mostly given up. But then I found Yelp reviews about Chicken Express! We finally got to trying it and my husband is still raving about it. I ordered the two chicken kabobs plate (only $8.25!!), which comes with a gigantic portion of flavorful rice, an iceberg salad with some kind of KILLER dressing, and pita wedges with a creamy garlic dipping sauce. The chicken was better than any I've ever had at a Mediterranean place - moist, full of flavor from being marinated in divine spices and tangy lemon, so good I wanted to lick the wooden skewer. My husband ordered the half chicken plate ($7.95 - such a killer deal!), which came with all of the above except pita/dipping sauce (you have a choice of rice, baked beans, or potatoes.) He liked the spices on my chicken better but was happy to devour his giant pieces of perfectly cooked chicken. Again, a gigantic portion of rice, which is good because you want to just drink that stuff, it's so good. He has quite an appetite and couldn't believe how big the portion sizes here are. And so affordable - all the plates are under $10. It was enough food that we could share with our hungry toddler and still have a whole container of leftover rice. No leftover chicken because that stuff is magical. And my husband practically drank the pita dipping sauce from my entree. No waste here. There was another customer who was the big, burly, construction type and I heard him ask for a box to take leftovers home too (!!) The service is quick and friendly and no-nonsense. Self-serve drinks, styrofoam plates, and plastic utensils. The restaurant isn't the cleanest (tables could use a good wipe-down and the floors needed to be swept but it wasn't too bad) so we'd probably do takeout next time, but there was a lot of business even early on a Thursday night. They have high chairs and booster seats for the kiddos and I saw one kid meal on the menu for $4.25. Some construction next door right now but there's still plenty of parking behind it. You need to check this place out. It's worth it. We are just counting down the days when we can enjoy their chicken again! read more

I'm going to add to the reviews stating how huge the portions are. There's enough to be full for dinner and full for lunch the next day. I ordered the combination plate that comes with a chicken kabob, a beef kabob, side salad, rice, and pita bread. Both kabobs were super juicy but did find them a little but oversalted. The tzatziki sauce was refreshing and the rice was nice although slightly overcooked. The dressing on the salad was perfect. Huge portions. Great presentation, cheap prices. Do not be fooled by the 4 star reviews, or the pictures of the food. BUT, food can definitely taste better. I had a combination of roast chicken and ground beef. Roast chicken looks well seasoned but the inside is kinda dry. The ground beef is okay to good but nothing to brag about, possibly the best thing on my plate. My hubby had mixed kebab of chicken and beef. The beef kebab was more like steaks on a stick. Had one bite of it and It was really hard to chew on, gave up chewing and spat it out. There are definitely better places in Salt Lake and this place is run down but it's clean on the inside. The rice lacked flavor almost like they forgot to add salt and just sprinkled some paprika on top. The salad was old and brown and it looked like mold was growing in the ice dispenser. As Greek as a Taco Bell selling Teryaki Croissant sandwiches. GR Kitchen, Mad Greek, Greek Souvlaki, even Apollo Burger... all use "gyro cones" from 1 of 5 companies in Chicago. For meat, I prefer Grecian Delight, obtained by Nicholas Food. It tastes better than the cheap stuff. Anything taste's better than Arby's Gyro, but Chicken Express only barely. The sauce is the weakest part. It's not fresh yogurt, but a bottled sauce. Rojos at Smith's. Haig's at Harmons. These are different, but still use real yogurt. Greek owners would use real yogurt. Not bad, just not Greek. More like a dive that's a bit universal. read more

If you like chicken kababs, then you should most definitely try the ones here. Their double chicken kabab plate is a real value for money meal. It comes with a garden salad, 2 skewers of chicken kababs, lots and lots of rice and a couple of pita pieces. That's a lot of food for just $8. Their baklava is pretty good as well. The chicken and beef slovaki are good. The portions are large. The foods is fast. I highly recommend the combination. It comes with a chicken skewer, beef skewer, gyro meat, some pita triangles, rice and a salad. I recommend two changes to the combination. Get half rice and half potatoes (instead of all rice) and add feta to your salad. I also get an extra white sauce. read more
