I had heard the chicken was great so I tried to go there two times before but got there too late and once I got there and they were out of chicken. If I usually have a choice between chicken or ribs 99% of the time I'd go ribs, especially babyback ribs considering I have a large smoker myself. Anyway, I finally got a chance to taste the chicken and was amazed at how tasty the chicken was. It looked great and tasted even better. No sauce needed. It was smoked to perfection. I can definitely see why it was sold out. I'd go back again today but I still have some leftover so maybe I'll go back tomorrow . Welp, planned on taking food pics for ya'll, but apparently we were all starving for some good food bc... it's all gone. Portions are reasonable, food quality is good, smoked pulled pork and chicken to perfection, and really cool and casual vibe. Pricier for a casual spot with paper and plastic dining, but not so far off that it would keep us from returning. Sat outside and played Ladderball while we waited. Self- serve drinks, cutlery, and sauces. Highly recommend the smoked chicken, pulled pork, mac, and brown rice. The ribs can be a little hit or miss regarding dryness, but yea for great sauce if so. A newly constructed food hall warehouse that offers all kinds of food. The Chicken here is super tender, slowly roasted. I may be biased but I prefer the Chicken over the Ribs. The Ribs were good although the Chicken is the star. The Mac Salad is a staple with this meal. Opted for Brown rice for health, it was a bit dry but BBQ sauce solved that problem. read more

Fantastic BBQ! What a great addition to Garden City! Food: 5/5. There is nothing like this delicious bbq place. The food was absolutely amazing! The chili was very flavorful and had a little kick to it. We also shared some loaded fries which I definitely recommend! I don't think you can go wrong here! Highly recommend this place! My wife and I tried it for the first time on Saturday. This location is part of the boardwalks and can be hard to locate at night. The signage is fine but difficult to track down when it's dark. Once we arrived around 7 we noticed it wasn't very busy inside but were instantly greeted by someone. We decided on trying the chicken and rib plate, as well as share a side of the Mac salad. Each plate came with brown rice and a cup of chili with a few upgraded side options. Honorable mention that this establishment has coke products. Initial thought was how huge the portions were! We got around 3 ribs and a quarter of a chicken. What I'm happy to report on is that this food has character. The chicken was very well seasoned and cooked with just enough crispiness on the outside and juiciness on the inside. The same could be said about the ribs, great execution on the rub. Chili was also an incredible side including bacon and tasted like actual homemade chili with a great flavor profile. A lot of chicken places have been opening up in the valley and this place truly stands out. Most places are too scared to season their chicken but this place has an identity and expresses it through their chicken and BBQ which I need to highlight. Overall experience was 5/5. Ambiance was very calm and laid back, good music. The team there was friendly, approachable and personable and the food was next level compared to most places in the valley. I would return there in a heartbeat and fully plan on bringing family back with us, I highly recommend you try this place if you enjoy great BBQ. read more

I got the sampler platter with a side of macaroni salad. The outside of my chicken was a bit dry although it was very flavorful. But the inside was luscious. I also enjoyed the pulled pork. Tasty and well shredded. I did not however appreciate the boring brown rice and the overly spicy beans. The chicken was very good and tender. The ribs were not flavorful at all, all the flavor would have to come from the bbq sauce which I wasn't a huge fan of- it was just ok. I really was not a fan of the sides that automatically come with the meal: plain brown rice and chili. To substitute, it's $2 per side. So I chose fries and macaroni salad. The macaroni salad was not great. I've never had a macaroni salad like it before. The fries were good but I'm not sure why there were only like 12 fries considering I paid $2 extra. Hey Boise we have a new BBQ spot and you need to check it out! This is a much needed add to this town which absolutely lacks good BBQ except for Neighbor Tim's. This is a brand new restaurant located in the new Boardwalk area along the Boise River front. We walked up in this place on a walk and decided to give it a try. Now if you know me I will be honest I am a BBQ snob! Won't deny it and not bashful about it. Really because I have worked years to master the craft and most places don't live up to my expectations until Chicken in a Barrel. Simple menu with not a ton of choices which I love. Normally I wouldn't get chicken at a BBQ spot but it's their specialty. They smoke all of their lets meats in house in large drum barrel type smokers. I decided on the 1/2 chicken and rub combo and added a couple extra ribs. The platters come with a side of rice and chili. First off the chicken is absolutely delicious and perfectly smoked! The ribs also done very well with a great smoke ring. The side of chili was pretty good and wondered about the rice until my wife made the suggestion to mix them. Oh Yea! Now a perfect side item with a little kick to the chili. We also ordered some onion rings and while not homemade they were cooked perfectly. Service was excellent and the reason we stopped in was because we ran across the owner walking by and he invited us to try. So why not! In between taking orders he walked around and talked to all his customers which is an A+ in my book. We will for sure be back!! Boise get out and try this new spot! read more

Very promising!!! Chicken in a Barrel is a welcome addition to Garden City and the greater Boise area! I tried the sampler plate of chicken, pulled pork and beef, a baby back rib, homemade chili and brown rice. I really loved the chili, it wasn't heavy and it was packed with tons of flavor. The meat is served "naked" and they offer their original sauce which I loved. It was a nice combination of smokey sweet that I really enjoyed. They offer a "hot" version that I didn't try. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the baby back rib and next time I would definitely order the full or half rack a la cart without hesitation!! The chicken was perfectly cooked and delicious! I found the pulled beef and pork salty for my taste and I really hope that isn't the norm. I have a feeling it's not because everything else was perfectly seasoned. The brown rice was average. The service was above and beyond as I had a little difficulty finding the restaurant in the newly built building. I called them and an employee actually came outside to look for me! The restaurant is casual with an open concept. I'm very excited for their large outside patio area that will be a great place to eat when the weather warms up. Chicken in a Barrel also offers a Keiki (kids) Menu, various sides and an either a mixed green or caesar salad. TIP - park in the dirt lot at the end of the road and walk across to the apartment building keeping towards the left side. I've been at least 3 times since they opened this new location. Loved the original in Hawaii and this one is just as good. All their meats are tender and delicious. I especially like the coleslaw.
