I don't know what this says about me (probably that I have a cheesy sense of humor), but I have a tendency to want to try restaurants with corny names...regardless of whether or not they're actually any good. Cali-pho-nia? Been there...twice (and it's pretty "bleh"). Chick-n-Oodle Soup? Closed down before I had the chance to go. Good Frickin Chicken? On the list to try. And of course...Chicken Pho You. Now, if the name didn't give it away, Chicken Pho You's specialty is Pho Ga (chicken noodle soup...what else?). If you've never had it before, it's a pretty simple dish - flat rice noodles and shreds of chicken meat in a chicken broth that's garnished with cilantro (blech). Fairly basic, but it can be oh so good if done right. While I wasn't really expecting much, I was still a little disappointed with what I had. The broth in Pho Ga is generally on the lighter side (especially compared to a regular beef broth), but I thought this one felt especially light. The taste was thinner than others I've had in the past, and it was heavy on the cilantro (though that's a personal preference since I'm not a fan). The meat and noodles were fine though, and there was a good balance of the two in the bowl. Still, not as good as Hoa Ky's down the street or Turtle Tower in SF. As filling (and cheap) as my large bowl of pho ga may have been, I can't say I'd go out of my way to go back. I'm open to giving a second chance, but sorry Chicken Pho You. Not a bad place for comfort food or just food to warm you up! I highly recommend the beef stew with noodles. The broth from the beef stew is delicious and the beef is extremely tender. They give you a large bowl of pho noodles with broth, which I couldn't finish. Opt for just the beef stew if you don't want to pass out from food coma afterwards. Of course, you must try their house special chicken noodle soup once. I love their broth, but the noodles are too soft and the pieces of breast meat are too dry. I don't feel the need to gulp water having these dishes, so seems MSG is minimal to none. Definitely a steal for the price-to-portion ratio. However, be aware service for dine-in is extremely slow. I've been here pre pandemic and back then the portions and flavor were on point. Unfortunately, in the past couple years, food quality and portion size have gone downhill. I can't say about eating there, but we have ordered multiple times for delivery. We normally order 2 large chicken pho. The chicken is tender and flavorful, however the portions are ridiculously small for a LARGE size. They give plenty of noodles to make up for that though. Their broth is so watered down and because they also do not include a lime or lemon wedge or hoisin/hot sauce, it makes my pho experience that much more negative here. Stopped in for a bowl of Pho Ga and some Summer rolls one evening for dinner. I guess I should have specified the order - I was expecting the rolls to come out first. Instead, they brought the Pho Ga out first - I had to ask for the rolls. When they brought the Pho Ga out - they only included a tiny saucer with a few thick slices of jalapeño and a lemon wedge. No bean sprouts, no Basil, no lime. I had to ask for the bean sprouts and Basil. Then they brought me a serving of them. I tasted the broth - it's very light colored and light on flavor overall. I would have liked some more complexity to the flavor profile. I then added the Basil, Jalapeños, Bean Sprouts, and a few squirts of Sriracha sauce to enhance the broth flavor. Come here for the chicken pho! It's in the name. I don't know why people come here and order other things and complain. This is probably one of the cheapest places in Millbrae to sit down and get a bowl of noodle soup. They recently updated their menu and raised all the prices, but it's still a bargain for Millbrae. There are so many Vietnamese restaurants nearby, but Chicken Pho You has hands down the best pho ga in the area. They use fresh noodles, and that makes all the difference. The texture of the noodles is so soft and delicious to eat. You'll know what I'm talking about if you've had pho ga made with dry noodles. It's just not the same. I work in Burlingame, and this is the closest I can get to a really good bowl of pho ga without having to go all the way to Turtle Tower in SF. When Ben Tre is closed on Tuesday, this place is packed. They usually only have 2 waitresses, so service can get really slow during lunch. You can't really argue against a $10-12 lunch in Millbrae. As a NorCal foreigner, this place feels like a really local shop in downtown Millbrae. Came here for pho around 9AM on a Saturday morning but was given what seemed like a Hong Kong style breakfast menu instead. Not what I was expecting, but I ordered the pork with preserved vegetable noodle soup instead. I don't know what it was, but it hit my palette just right. It is on the saltier side so beware, but the saltiness from the preserved vegetables paired with a Vietnamese ice coffee is definitely one way to get your day started. DELICIOUS all the way from LA. I've been to Chicken Pho You several times and I must say that I like the food very much. The most recent time was to order take out. I especially like their soup pho and BBQ pork chop. The place is not big and there are only three people working the dining area. But all three persons work very hard and the best part is that they were able to maintain a very pleasant attitude to all guests. Perhaps the most impressive thing to me is that before I try that place, I went in on a Saturday close to 11 AM and asked to use their rest room and the waitress showed me where it was. I've been to other places and they usually would look at me with a disgusted look and refused. That gave me a very good impression and prompted my first visit. I was craving some hot soup and it actually hit the spot on a cold, rainy day. A typical pho style restaurant. The waitress was friendly and pleasant. Husband and I stopped by our wedding vendor to pick up some stuff & we were hungry. Great thing is that they are open during that weird in-between hour when other restaurants are closed after their lunch and before their dinner shift. We both ordered rice plates, they were pretty good but took a while to come out. It was not that long but the lady who came after us got her noodles before her. The pork chop was thin but it was still very tasty. My husband's chicken was pretty good, it was not dry. The shrimp cakes were not very good, very mushy in the middle and not crispy on the outside. I think the imperial rolls are a better option. You get a lot of rice, I couldn't finish my plate so I took it home for dinner. We also ordered a mango red bean drink, it was not very good so we didn't finish it. It was bland and the red beans didn't really work well with the mango. But their drinks menu is really affordable! Red bean drinks are only $2.75 here and they have drink specials on their back wall for only $.99. Drinks on their $.99 wall include papaya milk, mango juice, lemon iced tea and thai ice tea. Not a bad place to grab a quick bite but we also didn't have much options in the area. I will come to try their chicken pho next time to see how it compares to Pho Ga An Nam in SJ. The food we ordered: - Beef chow fun - the fun/noodles were not thick - instead was narrow noodles which I like. The beef was a bit tough but still okay to eat. just need to chew a bit more longer. - Rare slices of steak; beef ball noodle - the pho were soft and broth was good; not strong flavor which I like. Came with side plate of bean sprouts which you mixed in with the broth or can eat as is. Gave a good crunch as you bite in with the noodles. Beef ball and rare slices steak were both good. - Leek and pork dumplings noodle soup - the broth was good and dumplings were tasty. - Hong Kong Curry; Well Done Flank over Rice - it was good combination - the curry, rice and flank was good. One of my favorite noodle spots in the bay. Always come here for a good bowl of noodle soup after a late outing from the night before. Chicken noodle soup (5/5): This is my go to. The soup is light yet packs enough flavor that keeps me sipping. To make it more hefty you can always add sauce (sriracha and oyster) The chicken is usually pretty great, though don't expect anything super culinary. And it's generally never dry. I'm a big fan of the wide white rice noodles they use. Blanches lettuce (4/5): Always get this as a side dish. Good balance to the bowl of noodles. Garlic adds character to the lettuce. Although not a fav, I do find myself coming back here every so often with the family. I always get their rare beef noodle soup. The broth is very tasty and flavorful; great warming soup for cold gloomy days. It's definitely better than the Msg-filled broth of Bentres. My family always get their chicken noodle soup. There's two ladies here that I like very much cause they are always very attentive and nice. My two other friends both ordered the Chicken Pho and I ordered the grilled pork rice plate and shrimp spring rolls for an appetizer. 1. Chicken Pho- The soup base was ok but the chicken was a bit bland. It wasn't much better than having it from a can. Maybe my taste buds have been spoiled by turtle tower but I felt like the pho was significantly below average. 2. Grilled Pork- The dish was 75% rice and the meat portion is really little. The chop the pork into really small slices which I've never seen it made that way before. Also it didn't come with any fish sauce which is what makes the dish! 3. Shrimp Spring Rolls- The rolls were very small and thin. The peanut sauce was good but otherwise not worth the $4 for two rolls cut in half. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The service was alright but a bit slow. We had to ask for extra bowls multiple times and they kept forgetting to bring things like more water or tea. They also brought one of the chicken phos first before everyone else and she had to wait 15 minutes for the rest of the dishes to come out. Not only did it take forever for us to get menus and waters, it took forever for them to get our orders and then later our food. The total amount of time we waited was most likely longer than the total amount of time it took for us to eat the pho. The chicken pho dish is pretty simple - a bowl of flat noodles and chicken. You can get the pho with yellow noodle. The broth was decent, and the portions were sufficient, but nothing was outstanding. Having extensive experience with Vietnamese food even while I was in the womb, I ordered one of my favorite dishes: Vermicelli Noodles with BBQ Pork. I always ask if the pork is tender, so I did as usual and they confirmed. However, it was a total lie. The pork had the weirdest texture ever! It was a little too thick, fatty, and curled up at the edges. What is that about?! The dish itself contained a disproportionate ratio of noodles to meat. There were way too many noodles I left about half the bowl behind. The Spring Rolls with shrimp and pork were actually quite good. The meat was not typical; they used a juicy marinated meat which was an interesting change. I'm not going to complain about juicy meat. No one should. Service is your typical pho house type. Rushed, curt, and nothing special. The place does get super packed for lunch, so make sure to get there early! When we stood up to go there was a line out the door. This place is not your usual pho joint, their noodles are the flat kind, like a thinner chow fun style. They have chicken soup, beef soup, rice dishes, and their noodles. I'd have to say their portions have gotten a little smaller, before when they first opened, i couldn't even finish a small beef ball pho, now i could finish it and still have room for dessert! I usually come here with my mom, she usually orders the seafood one and i always order either beef ball pho or beef ball and tripe pho. I don't think the beef ball tripe is in the menu, but they always make it for me. OHH immediately I feel special :) She was very polite and took the time with our orders. I ordered the pork chop, sunny side up egg, and fish cake vermicelli. That is absolutely my favorite dish here. First off, I love vermicelli because I love it with the fish sauce. Second, their pork chop is very tender and flavorful. The sauce is great. Fish cake taste soft and on the inside and somewhat crunchy on the outside. It also comes with couple pieces of cabbage and tomatoes. She also treated me to a bowl of homemade soup! sweet. All the guys ordered pho with soup. My friend Charlie enjoyed the tomato soup based pho. And all others seemed content with their food! I also ordered the cold lemon with honey drink. It was delicious. 3-5 slices of lemon with the right amount of honey to balance out. I was a little surprised. I wanted something soothing so I decided to order the sweet and sour tomato soup while my friend got the beef stew noodle soup. Originally I had no intention of ordering an appetizer but I saw the Vietnamese imperial roll so I had to get it. I was amazed that the appetizer came before the main course. It has been a hit or miss for me when it comes to ordering the appetizer. The imperial rolls were really good i might add. It came out piping hot and crunchy along with the tasty fish sauce. Although the fish sauce could use a little spice, it was descent. Siracha did not do it for me. Then came our noodles. The bowl is quite huge for a regular bowl so I could only imagine what a large is like. My sweet and sour tomato soup was a little bland. The tomatoes were slightly uncooked and there were barely or if any crab or meat for that matter. I felt like I was eating tomato soup. It looked like my friend somewhat enjoyed his beef stew soup.
