From the beginning they were courteous, honest, knowledgeable, efficient and kind. Their work was excellent and they fit me in no matter how crowded their schedule. After having some unfortunate situations with other mechanics in the area where I was definitely scammed, a friend recommended I go here and see Nate and his team, and I could not recommend them enough. They have always been so honest and respectful, and I truly feel like they are looking out for the customers best interest - For example, I brought a car in for repairs and was told it would be a lot of money to fix and that it might be best to put this money towards a new car purchase. At first I was willing to just spend the money to fix the car, but they then had an honest conversation with me that it would not be worth it for me and I would most likely have to put in a lot of extra money to maintain the vehicle, and encouraged me to take some time to think about it. I've been coming to this place for a while with just about anything concerning cars. The customer service is great and the mechanics know their stuff. I've worked with Wally as my mechanic and he's an amazing guy. He'll take the time to get to know you and will always go the extra mile for his customers. The shop can get busy, yet somehow the service is always quick. On top of that they will take the time to explain any repairs. Often times with older cars there is a lot you can do, but they take the time to explain what you need done and why. They will always call you before making a repair, explaining what they will do and the cost. Owning a car can be stressful but finding a great auto shop with a trustworthy mechanic makes it much better. I'd recommend checking out this place for anyone. You should also take a bit of time to meet Wally and the other people working here. They are all straightforward, cool, and trustworthy people. read more

There are two things in life, I always want to put off...bringing my car to the shop and dental work. Cause it's painful? No. Cause it's expensive? No. It's because if there is an issue, I have no expertise or recourse for saying I do not agree, cause that could lead to me spinning out on a highway or teeth falling out; both which terrify me. That being said, I need an place to bring my car where I feel comfortable and don't feel like 'a total chick' when asking questions or being spoken to. Chico's is this place. I started off with an inspection a few years back and they were friendly and courteous so I keep going back. When I bring my car in, they fix what they are supposed to, check out any noises that I explain with my 'total chick' sounds effects ("um, it kinda sounds like grinding..maybe metal on metal..but like a heavier metal...coming from the front middle-ish of the hood..maybe?"), and when they do find other issues---they call and let me know before they do work with prices, they always seem legit and not out of left field, and are understanding that i might need to wait to get some money--and let me know how long i can probably go. The guys at Chico's always seem to be looking to get me back on the road, safely, and without screwing me over. And THIS chick appreciates that. read more

Hmm. I'm not sure about this place. I left my car there to get a smog check and oil change. The smog inspection went fine, and I received my sticker with no problems, so there didn't seem to be any issues with that. But then I brought in my car to get it repaired at an actual auto shop a month later and they told me the oil was completely black, as if it hadn't been changed for a while. I had under 400 miles since I had an "oil change" at Sunoco, so the oil would not have gotten so dirty so quickly... (Luckily the new auto shop gave me a free oil change.) So, in the end, I don't think Sunoco actually gave me an oil change-- even though they gave me an updated windshield sticker. Maybe they just did a poor job, but either way, I will not be returning here. read more

This review is long overdue. I just happened to come across the shop one day when I needed a state inspection sticker. Before I drove into the shop I've driven by it hundreds of times without a second thought. Today the shop was not very busy, so they were able to service my vehicle immediately. My car goes in the garage, 15 minutes later comes out with a new sticker and I'm ready to go. The last time I had a state inspection in that area was several years ago. Ended up going to a rival shop across the rotary and it took them 2-3 hours before they took care of the sticker. I thought I got lucky that day. 2nd time I went to Chico's was for swapping out two worn tires. I ordered them online and needed them mounted & balanced. Once again they were able to fit me in their garage within 20-30 minutes. Wally just finished working on another vehicle and stepped outside and motioned for me to pull the car in. I got out and watched Wally work, he was fast and efficient. While he went to the back of the shop to use the balancing machine, I noticed he had a unopened submarine sandwich right to his work station. Instead of having lunch he mounted/balanced my tires FIRST!! That just says it all. Lunch is an extremely important meal for me to function properly for the remainder of the day. Without food I get extremely cranky. Also there was a another time where there was this weird noise coming from one of my tires. Wally took it for a spin around the block and heard the noise after going over a few bumps. Went back to the shop and upon closer inspection turns out a simple bolt came loose and disappeared from the caliper housing so that's what the clacking noise was coming from. He could have charged me a few hundred by making something up, but no Wally replaced the bolt and 15 minutes later I was driving away. There's not enough good things I could say about these guys. Nate, Wally, John at the front that handles the money are alway happy, kind and courteous. Every time I visit the shop it's always a pleasant experience. The only negative is I usually hang out there a little bit longer than I should to chat with everyone. Out of the dozens of so called mechanics I've dealt with in the past, there's one main reason I always come back to this shop. These guys are honest and stand by their work/repairs. There's NOTHING like the peace of mind of having a mechanic that you can actually trust when problems pop up with your vehicle. One last note, if you're not familiar with that area, there's a shopping area behind the shop called Fresh Pond Mall. Whole Foods on one side and Trader Joes across the street. Newbury Comics for all you anime fans. You can get a few things crossed off your Christmas list when you're there if you don't feel like sitting around in the waiting area. read more

Have been getting my car serviced by Wally on and off for a few years now. He always beats the quotes given to me by my dealership, by about 1/2 and saves me a ton of money by being honest about everything. I was told by my dealership I needed a new control arm ($500+) along with my 50k mile fluid and filter changes and the likes. Wally took a look at the jeep, changed all the fluids and filters that needed to be done (again, for1/2 the price quoted by Grava Dealership in Medford) AND looked at the control arm and told us it was in "mint condition" and there was no need to change a thing. Between Wally at Chico's and John & Nicks over on Mass Ave between Harvard Sq and Central Sq, we are happy campers with our mechanics! read more

So I just moved here not too long ago, and I finally got my car registered with new plates and so I needed to go get the car inspected within 7 days. My insurance agent mentioned that I could just go down to the Sunoco down the street. I needed the car inspected so I wasn't expecting much. When doing the inspection the mechanic noticed a little bit of wet oil where it shouldn't be and showed it to me. He then spent the next little bit trying to figure out where it was coming from. We couldn't locate the source, so he cleaned it off with some degreaser and told me to come back in a few weeks and we'd give it another look and see if it comes back. He said that since it is a leased car he'd bet that Toyota would fix the problem if there was indeed one. Basically, they just came off as genuinely concerned about the well being of my car and wanted me to be in the loop on it. A nice feeling to get from a mechanic. He wasn't trying to sell me a new power steering pump or other service I didn't need, just noticed a small potential oil leak and wanted me to know about it. I regularly get my yearly inspection and oil changes at Chico's, but they are also capable of delivering major work at a reasonable price. Wally tells you how it is, and never pressures for immediate action if it isn't 100% necessary. When the head gasket on my car went, I was facing a long tow. Rather than take a quick buck, Wally suggested I check if anyone in my family had AAA, which it turned out they did. Chico's even did some additional work at no charge: they replaced a missing belt cover, and used brand new bolts during reassembly. While this might not seem like a big deal or cost them a lot, it shows they take pride in their work and deliver customer satisfaction. read more

I first tried Chico's because of its listing in the NFT and I was a bit skeptical, fearing that it would be either crowded or overpriced or that they would stop caring about their reputation after having gotten crazy-good press... I have had nothing but good experiences here. You know how some mechanics will condescend? (Which means "to talk down to?") None of that here. All of the mechanics seem competent, no-nonsense, and amiable. They know how to fix your car, they do it with no guff, and they'll give you a fair price for it. I've dealt with Wally most often, and I can't imagine anyone else I'd rather have taking care of my car. He's honest and friendly, and it's obvious that he enjoys his work. So, do you have to pay out the nose to get this level of service? Not a chance. Except for the odd oil change, I've only ever taken my cars to another mechanic once since I moved to Boston, and I came running back after getting overcharged. I don't know a whole lot about cars, but my dad does, and all of the Chico's quotes I've run by him are flat-on reasonable, especially when you're getting reliable quality. When I convinced my ex to take her car here, she was hesitant at first. Nate ran some computer diagnostics and then took the time to explain to both of us (not just me, as some chauvanist mechanics will) exactly what was going on. And since the repair only involved unplugging something, he did it for free. That convinced her. I'll be bringing my car here for many years to come! read more
