I left El Paso in 2022 after living there for 37 years. Even though I moved away, I make it a point to visit every summer to spend time with my family. One place I always have to visit is Chico's Tacos. Chico's has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, we spent many Sundays there, and my favorite location was the original McRae location. It was only about two minutes from our house. I still miss that place. Their food has never disappointed me. The rolled tacos covered in their famous sauce and topped with cheese are still as good as I remember. I always add their green chile salsa. It is so good and gives the tacos the perfect kick. When I finish the tacos, there is always some sauce, melted cheese, and green chile salsa left in the bowl. Instead of letting it go to waste, I pour it over my French fries. French fries? Yes! That is the Chico's way, rolled tacos and fries. The fries covered in the sauce, cheese, and green chile salsa are so good. Then there is the hot dog. They serve two hot dogs split down the middle in a hamburger bun and top them with chili beans. I have no idea who came up with that combination, but it has been on the menu for as long as I can remember. One thing I love about Chico's is that they have not changed much over the years. The food is still the same, which is exactly how I like it. The only thing that has really changed is the price. I remember when my dad could take the family there and spend around $20. Those days are long gone! The only thing that surprised me this visit was that they no longer use the classic paper bowls with the Chico's logo. They have switched to plain generic bowls. It is a small change, but it made me a little nostalgic. Chico's Tacos never disappoints. Every visit brings back great memories, and it still tastes like home. read more

Since Chico's Tacos is an El Paso tradition, we decided to stop by with some family for their first time. It was also my first time in more than two years. We pulled the best kind of stop - a late night one. I had the King Size Hot Dog and a Single Order of Tacos. As always, it was delicious and comforting. Now granted, these tacos are a unique twist on Mexican dishes, so it may not be what you expect. Additionally, I did have difficulty explaining to my cousin what exactly are Chico's tacos. OMG- so went back to the 915 for a short visit. Straight off the plane- 10:30 am- where did we go? CHICOS baby!!! Those rolled tacos with crispy fries and of course a diet- is to die for. My SIL has never been to EP and wanted him to experience what the natives all rave about. We did have to show him how to use his fork to pick up the tacos and spread that delish green sauce on them. I'm from California and I was born and raised in El Paso. So, I've been going to Chicos since the 70's. It's still a great place to eat and the food is still delicious as it's always been. However, it's crazy expensive and I can spend less on a better Mexican meal. I could not believe the 31$ bill for two. We went L&J the next day and spent about 4$ less for a way better meal. Sorry Chicos but you raised your prices so high that it looks like you've lost some customers. Definitely won't be going to Chicos on any of my return trips to El Paso. read more

They could stand to reduce the sauce bath by about 50% because the soggier the tacos get, the messier they become. And it's not like the sauce "makes" the dish. It's more of a complement. KING HOT DOG: This is a split chili dog in burger format with pickles & mustard. Uniquely tasty & expectedly difficult to keep together. I ditched the top bun & folded the bottom part like a taco b/c it was too much bread for me. SERVICE: Polite & expeditious for a Sunday afternoon. 4 stars for the nostalgia of eating at Chico's since I was a little girl, minus 1 star for lack of customer service. Growing up in the City, Chico's is a staple in town. No matter what time of day you visit, at any location, it's always busy and non stop. Now, if you're not from El Paso keep in mind that these rolled up tacos in tomato sauce are definitely an acquired taste, in fact many locals aren't fans. A typical order for most is a single order of "tacos" some fries and either a burger or grilled cheese on the side, this is my go to order. But my absolute favorite are the round hot dogs, so good. Over the years the prices have gone up, which is understandable, but a family of three used to be able to eat here for $13ish dollars, not its more like $25 depending on what your order. Even with the lack of good customer service and messy tables/floors, this will not keep locals away, it's what we love and enjoy. read more

Came here for the first time in a Friday night, first time ever to El Paso actually. Family wanted to take us here. Tried their single taco order, grilled cheese and fries. So their tacos are liked rolled up, or tacquitos I guess I would describe it. And then just soaked in tomato's sauce and topped with shredded cheese. I like it on the fresher crispy side, looks like some people like to let it soak. But overall not bad. Nothing I would come to on the regular, wouldn't say no to though ha. I had to ask for my money back. The atmosphere was so unco and freezing cold inside the restaurant everyone was shivering. I deceived to nicely ask the two older ladies in the front and they laughed at me and told me the cold not lower the temperature. There were elderly people in and children freezing and I told them and they said they couldn't do anything about it and laughed away. I was so cold and I was wearing long sleeves and pants I decided to ask for my money back and they started apologizing and asked me to stay and they would turn the air down. I refused and came to the one on George Dieter where the temperature is tolerable. I think people like the rude lady with glasses and brown shirt should not be working in a family environment. As polarizing a restaurant as there can be: you're probably going to love it or hate it. I can see this being good after a night of heavy drinking, but it doesn't hold a candle to any of the other tacos in the area. Then again - it isn't really competing with traditional tacos. This is the first time I have actually visited a Chico's Tacos in the 10 years I've come to El Paso. I have to say, I was missing out! I got a single order of the Tacos with the sauce on the side because I was taking it home to my Nana. It was delicious! The tacos seem to be an ordinary Taquitos, but the flavor is so much more. The seasoned beef is unique and you can taste the freshness when you are biting into them. We also got a couple orders of fries and a couple burgers for the kids afraid of the "Chile". Which wasn't hot, but tasty! The only reason we didn't give 5 stars is that my sons burger bun was hard. He liked the meat, though. The best part? It has to be the price! $21 for 4 meals! From the burgers to the "tacos"..... this place is one of my guilty pleasures in El Paso and this location is my favorite one. It's a bit newer and safer than lower valley or the northeast. Chicos Tacos is considered a local institution in El Paso and is one of the city's best-known restaurants, having been featured in the Food Network show, The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Gabriel Iglesias even talked about it during his "I'm not fat, I'm fluffy" standup. That being said, this is NOT the best food you can get, but it is equivalent of one of those food places you like because it's inexpensive and literally, a guilty pleasure, kind of like that "hole in the wall" place that you know isn't the best, but you like it anyway. The burgers are delightful and very much homestyle, literally as if you made it at home. The same goes with the hot dogs and French fries. The one thing that is unique to this establishment is its "tacos." I emphasize the word tacos in quotations because these are in fact NOT tacos; they are FLAUTAS, but this restaurant calls them tacos and at this point so does everyone else. So, these tacos are basically flautas submerged in a tomato based soupy broth concoction smothered in cheddar "cheese," which doesn't fully melt... don't ask me why. You can top it with their fluorescent, green, spicy, jalapeno salsa, which is actually quite amazing salsa. Again, these are not the best, but there is just something that will make you crave these every so often. I don't get why, but that's just the way it is. Another great thing is they are open very late, so many people come here to close out a night of partying hard. Lastly, DO NOT expect: -To be able to pay with a credit card; they only accept cash and they have a "convenient" expensive ATM at every location. -To get refills on ANYTHING. You get what you pay for. -To be greeted by a friendly staff. They always seem bored and just want to get to the next customer. They also expect you to understand the lingo and know their menu. Know what you want before you get to the counter. -To be surrounded by a high-class environment. They have unfriendly security guards at every location for a reason. -To always have a clean table. The traffic here is plentiful and hard for them to keep up at times. -To have your stomach be happy with you later, but it's worth it, I promise. Other than that, in highly recommend trying a Chicos Tacos at least ONCE if you're ever in town for a visit or passing through. read more

Last time I tried Chico's I was less than impressed but this time it was different. Maybe it was because i wasnt 6 months pregnant? Maybe because i wasnt sick? Who knows! All i know is that this time the tacos were edible and i actually liked them. I opted out of having the red juice sauce on top and enjoy them just with the green sauce and cheese. YUM. I was surprised to find out its not ground beef inside the taquitos but instead soy. healthier and cheaper i assume? Its def an el paso staple . Had to have a large drink since I was sweating balls with this damn humidity. The grilled cheese was delicious yet again, i swear they dip it in butter! SOOO good.
