I cannot understand why some people rave about this place. The "sauce" they use for their so-called tacos is watered down tomato, to the point where it's pretty much reddish/murky water. The cheese is a regular yellow cheddar congealed glob, and the "tacos" are really greasy old flautas. Disgusting and sloppy all over. Cheap? Yes. But those who swear this is an "El Paso staple" are really doing a disservice to the city's cuisine. Don't waste your time. The beef stew burrito was delicious and as far as I know this is the only place you can get a Chile Colorado burrito. It's inexpensive and very satisfying. I LOVE CHICO'S...but let's be honest guys, Chico's Tacos is not a 5...4...3...or even a 2 star restaurant. Yes, Chico's Tacos is a staple of El Paso and one of the few restaurants recognized by name around the area and occasionally by tourists (has there ever been a tourist in El Paso?), but it is not a good or even decent representation of what kind of food is available in EP. And before all you die hard Chico's Fans spam my Yelp with rude remarks...I've already said I LOVE CHICO'S! All of the CT have the same format. Stand in a line, place your order (cash only...CT a company that has seen more money than any other business in EP does not accept credit or debit, it's mind boggling), wait for your number to be called, devour. I think the best way for me to tell you guys why Chico's Tacos is only a 1 star business (but still you have to try it at least once) is for me to explain what a majority of the world thinks a 5 star restaurant should be like and what Chico's is like. CUSTOMER SERVICE What you expect: Someone to promptly greet you and then show you to your seat. Perhaps your server will go over the menu with you and they'll never let your drink become empty. What happens at Chico's: No smiling (I think that's in the CT employee handbook). They quickly take your order and move on. Someone will yell out your number. You better get up to get that refill. If you misplace your receipt/ticket good luck trying to convince them you haven't picked up your order yet. ATMOSPHERE What you expect: A beautiful dining area where it isn't too loud, but the next table isn't audible to you either. It doesn't have to be fancy, but just generally nice looking and clean. What happens at Chico's: Tables are kind of wiped down, but do it again just to make sure you're not going to sit in some sauce. It could just be cleaner. Don't go in the bathrooms. Music plays whenever someone has quarters for the jukebox (I like this, but what I don't like is the drunk girl that plays the same Shakira song for an hour). Keep an eye out for the good booths, some of them are slanted. FOOD What you expect: Either something made to perfection that would take you hours to replicate yourself (if you were ever successful) or something truly creative and innovative. What happens at Chico's: Government cheese, 'nuff said. What is Chico's Tacos known for? The flautas in tomato sauce with Government cheese (you'll find them on the menu as a Single (3) or Double (6)). I've already told you I like Chico's, but let me explain. As a kid I didn't know any better, I liked cheese and flautas, so good enough for me. The reason why every once in a while I venture to a Chico's is because it's nostalgic for me. You're either going to love it or hate it...there's absolutely no in-between. There's nothing creative about this dish either, you can find it at many other places in EP and usually made with better quality ingredients (if Chico's isn't for you, try Frisco Sticks at Frisco's on the eastside if you really want to determine if flautas with cheese and tomato sauce is good). Chico's Tacos doesn't serve 5 star meals. It doesn't have 5 star service. And it doesn't look anything like what you'd expect of a 5 star restaurant. I think it's extremely misleading for any and all Yelpers to give any of the Chico's Tacos a 5, 4 or 3 star rating. For such a high star rating I would expect to see at least steak on the menu. For those of you that aren't from EP and have stumbled across this review, I urge you to try CT because it is a staple of EP, but know what to expect. Also, if you're brave enough to try CT make sure you get the green sauce that they always have available on the counter, it's great on the flautas and fries. And even if you leave less than thrilled with the whole experience, at least it's the cheapest meal you've ever paid for. read more

Excuse me if I'm being too bold, but CT seems to have only cornered the market on drunk taste buds. I'm not sure what was so great about this place when I went for my first and last time, sober, for lunch, seeing as how it was so hyped up. Let's begin with how the food comes with a pretty delicious verde sauce, but is otherwise hard, uses government cheese, and still manages to charge at a higher price point than many mom and pop shops. The decoration is....nonexistent. The ambiance comes completely at the expense of its patrons, which would probably be a good thing if everyone was enjoying themselves. I will admit that service was pretty friendly, but I didn't see any smiling faces conversing while eating at lunch. Again, just another guess as to why CT seems good according to those who go after partying, and mediocre at best in the light of day. If In-n-Out had a location here, I'm sure I would make the journey all the way over to the east side from Houston. That's right, I don't even live in El Paso but I would happily make a return trip for some delicious eats in this great city. Giving me the urge to floss out the taste after eating here has me wanting to spend my money elsewhere in El Paso like on tamales in July. Chicos is an enigma. This location is the heir to the legendary McRae location. I love its simplicity. Everything from its rolled Tacos to its tomato-based sauces. Sure they have other items such as burgers,"hot dogs"(which are served in sandwich form), and fries, but why wouldn't you get a single or double order of rolled tacos with a mountain of cheese? I forced myself to stop being lactose just so I can enjoy them the way they are suppose too be eaten. And their green chile sauce is the icing on the cake. And did I mention that its dirt cheap? With $5, you can eat like a champ. I do have to warn you though...you better have an iron stomach because Chicos shows no mercy to the weak. Chicos Tacos is a sexy mistress. Chicos is a place you'll never forget whether you love it or hate it. I'm definitely a Chico's lover, and this is from a combination of things. For one Chico's reminds me my childhood. The McRae location has been reduced from guaranteed satisfaction, to an El Paso myth. There is simply something special about enjoying Chico's with family and friends. What doesn't hurt is the price and friendly menu that can appease most palettes. My order hasn't changed since childhood: two singles ( 6 rolled flautas), fries, and a rare chance to getaway guilt free with a Dr. Pepper. Some will hate it, some will love it, but no one can deny it's presence and allure as a heavy hitter in El Paso cuisine. The 4/5 rating is a little baffling. The flautas (they call them tacos but they're definitely flautas) seem reasonably competent . If they just served these with cheese they would be a 3/5 dish. OK but nothing amazing. Just garden-variety flautas. However, they drown them in a watery-greasy tomato sauce. Tomato sauce isn't even an accurate description. I'm pretty sure they buy canned tomatoes and then just pour the liquid from the can over the tacos. It's really bizarre and I'm not sure who thought it would be a good idea. The food looks like it's the brain child of a drunk man who finds himself at home with nothing but cheese, frozen Jose Ole taquitos, and some tomato juice. At least they're cheap, at only $3.99 for 6 "tacos". The strange thing, however, is how they nickle-and-dime you for soft drinks. At around $1.50, a medium coke is the same price here as anywhere else except that there's no refills. Do you want your soda with no ice? No problem, that'll only be 20 cents extra! Chico's is a strange place. If I found myself back here I'd hold the juice they drown the tacos in and instead opt for more salsa verde on the side. They specialize in rolled tacos, that dare I may say are delicious! I will add a caveat, they are a bit of an acquired taste and can be hit-or-miss but if you add extra cheese and get your sauce on the side (to control taco sogginess), they are a hit with many who venture in. The price points are also a big plus as you can walk out stuffed for less than ten bucks. Chico's also offers hamburgers and hot-dog sandwiches but the rolled tacos are their mainstay.
