We got some complimentary chips and salsa right off the bat, always a winner! We ordered an horchata, the mamamia chile relleno, and grilled veggie chimichanga all to share. Thanks to my Yelp buddies - Nat N., & Da FAMOUS Auntie - Nadine C. for posting their wonderful reviews, & pics from this Mexican restaurant called - Chile Relleno in the Temple Valley Shopping Center! After seeing all da pics of da grindages, I was totally sold and quickly bookmarked this place, as I dig Mexican Grindz!!! I swear, if this restaurant was in town............I'd be back again the following day for more Mexican grindages, as my friend & I really enjoyed our "pau hana" Friday meal here the other day. Upon arriving at the Temple Valley Shopping Center, we found parking right away........although the parking lot was packed, lucky there was more than enough parking available at the mall. As we looked around for Chile Relleno, it was easy to find, as all you had to do was look for the people standing outside of the restaurant (people were waiting to get a table). As I walked into the restaurant, I was greeted right away by the entrance & left my name on the wait list. The wait wasn't too bad, as the wait to get a table was about 15 to 20 minutes. When my name was called, we got seated in a booth & shortly after that, menus and complimentary chips & salsa were dropped off at our table. After looking over the menu, I already new what I wanted, as I saw Auntie Nadine's pic of her "Seafood Relleno Bell Peppers". What is the Seafood Relleno Bell Pepper? It's basically a Pepper stuffed with a seafood blend of white swai fish & shrimp, panela cheese and topped with a creamy white sauce. The dish was served with Spanish rice, & black beans.............. And you know what gangies??? Da buggah was ONO cuz!!!! Nom! Nom! Nom! This place is LEGIT YO!!!! My friend also ordered the same item, and he also said that the dish was really good! He plans to take da wifey & mini-me here one day, and I told him that it was a good idea! Service - Service here was very attentive. Drinks were refilled on a timely basis, and they were very generous in refilling our salsa & chips when we ran out. No complaints here, that's for sure! Wait, what?? I thought for sure I reviewed this restaurant, but I guess i neva click SAVE. This is my fav place on the windward side for Mexican food. On Tuesday and Thursday they have a special on street tacos and they usually have daily specials off the regular menu. I do a regular take out order when I visit my mom on that side and she LOVES the adobada tacos; which is the sweet marinated pork (I think they mentioned it's the pineapple that adds to the sweetness). We've gotten to the point where I just order a whole bunch of those tacos and chips. I've been doing it since the pandemic and my mom is not even close to getting tired of it!! -Dine-in: expect a wait during the peak hours. Food is cooked fresh so allow time for other diners to decide what they want, order, food to cook, diners to eat and digest (talk story). If you don't go during peck hours it's easy to get a table. Weekday lunch - no problem. -Take out: during peak hours the phone does get busy as the staff does triple duty of seating, serving and picking up the phone. They did correct the problem of the answering machine, so to the owners: Mahalo for that!! -Staff: always friendly and helpful. I think that is one of the reasons I like going there. They staff acts like they actually enjoy working there (a rarity now-a-days). -Ambiance: Very nice as you can see by everyone's pics; and on Friday and Saturday they have someone playing guitar. Also, they have surfing on one of the monitors all the times I've been there; so that is big big plus. -BYOB: but Times Supermarket is next door. Just gotta remember to pick up "drinks" while you are waiting for your table. -PARKING: ok, it's in the Temple Valley shopping center but the parking that is close to the restaurant is pretty narrow (seems like a trend). BUT the movie theater hasn't been open since the pandemic. So I park father than a normal person does. But we have seriously been lacking a Mexican restaurant that is consistently good. . .(wait for it) UNTIL NOW!!! Chile Relleno has been fantastic. There are options for all. Including vegetarians, pescatarians, carnivores, keiki, and Mexican food snobs (like my friends who travel back and forth to the mainland often enough to know what "good Mexican" should taste like). I've been super happy with their service. They always seem to be patient with my 3 boys (currently age 2) who get feistier by the minute. They love love love the horchata. As do I. I liked this place as soon as I walked in! My day started well because my friend had the day off and was able to have lunch with me. She had dined at Chile Relleno before and said that she had a good experience AND (as a bonus) our coworker loves this place! I knew that it was a Hot and New business on Yelp, but I didn't rush over because Mexican cuisine isn't my favorite. Chile Relleno may have changed my mind! We drove around the Ko'olau Center (in Temple Valley) parking lot a couple of times before we found a space. There's a movie theater and several other restaurants that share the parking, so at peak times, just be patient. The decor and ambiance were winners for me. I liked looking at all of the decorations and was thrilled when I discovered that the lighting above us were clear glass water dispensers with silver spigots! I need to get a picture next time! The service was another plus. Our waitress was patient, efficient, and helpful. She made great suggestions and helped us select delicious menu items! My friend got the Sidral Mundet apple soda and I got the Sangria (grape) soda...yum! We began our feast with complimentary crunchy chips and fresh, slightly spicy salsa. I was jonesing for some good Mexican food since leaving New Mexico in 2023. We had been warned there was no good Mexican food on the island. We stopped into this neighborhood eatery and were pleasantly surprised. It's a small, out-of-the-way mom and pop eatery. Lots of religious stuff on the wall, but overall good atmosphere. I had the seafood relleno and it was amazing. I loved the chipotle cream sauce - if I could make a suggestion it would be to give the option of making it spicier. I'll definitely be back. We ordered the food as takeout because we weren't able to dine in on this particular evening for personal reasons but we will definitely be back to dine in.... Saturday evening, they had live entertainment and the restaurant is truly a little hole in the wall with beautiful Mountain View's... the service for takeout at least was quick and easy... the food was absolutely delicious.... The nachos with Kalua Pork, carne asada, and chicken quesadilla were exactly the flavors we craved... as were the rice and beans.... Even my picky eaters devoured it! I was up there visiting my dad's gravesite (at HI State Veterans Cemetery) with a few local friends as it was time for me to go back home to Dallas. All I can say is: WOW! This was just like eating TexMex in Texas!! It was exactly like eating at my fave restaurant in McKinney/Plano called, El Fenix! The food was so good and comforting. I used to get tacos after working long late nights. There was this one taco truck that would be open till 4am near my apartment that I frequented. Since then, my expectations of authentic tacos from what I experienced on the East coast are high lol. So let's see what the island has to offer, and IMO you won't be disappointed. I had finished updating an old address at the DMV on the windward side. Thankfully, I had an appointment or I would've been stuck there all day. It took less than an hour, and I was out exploring the area for food. Chile Relleno is only two doors down from the DMV. That is incredibly smart. When you forget to bring a piece of document to the DMV, and want to shout explicits and scream, just go to Chile Relleno to eat and drink margaritas to drown out the frustration! Upon entry, I observed a few couples eating at a table and booth. The hostess was friendly, and handed me a menu, glass of water, and complimentary salsa and chips once seated. It was taco Tuesday!!! I did a little food dance and ordered one carne asada, shredded chicken, shredded beef, and adobado tacos! Chips were fried fresh and their homemade salsa was great! My first bite of the soft corn tortillas filled with adobado that was topped with white onions, and fresh cilantro left an explosion in my mouth. I had squeezed lime and drizzled the liquid guacamole on top of my taco. I knew this was just gold! There were pieces of grilled pineapple mixed with the pork that had a vinegary spicy taste. This has just become my favorite!! It was just one winner after another when I devoured all the tacos. The ingredients and meat were fresh. The beef and chicken were marinated in winner seasonings. Every bite was tender and flavorful. They did not skimp on anything! This would be my spot if I didn't live on the other side of town! It was awesome - very friendly, and the food came out at a decent pace. On a Wednesday night, there was a full house by 6:15pm. Not sure if this is the case every night, or because there was live entertainment. Chips/salsa are free (yes!). My friend ordered her go-to at mexican restaurants - the chimichanga, and I ordered a fiesta bowl with carne asada (it's basically a salad over a bed of spanish rice and black beans). Portions are generous - we both took home half of our meals because we wanted to save room for dessert - CHURROS with ice cream! W00t! Yep I'm a fan and will say that this is probably the best Mexican Food on the windward side. Better than the other two in Kaneohe. My wife volunteered that it was 5 stars in her book but I'm going with 4 Stars. Food: Plates are large and filled with food. Generous portion sizes. Some standard Mexican dishes and some interesting ones too. We sat at the bar because that was all that was available. So we were able to watch the open kitchen and the four Mexican cooks in action. My wife loved her classic chicken enchilada. I liked my vegetarian burrito but it was all grilled veggies inside and served with rice and refried beans and guacamole. Not the best in class burrito that a five-star restaurant would offer. Also, pretty anemic salsa...but it is free. Service: Friendly and efficient. Venue: Mexican decor in sort of a rustic theme. Much better than most on Oahu. Expect crowds at dinner time. Vegan Vegetarian: Spanish rice has chicken stock. Not sure if the refried beans have lard. They have black beans. You would have to request no cheese or sour cream. They offer some veggie versions of some dishes and two items in a vegetarian section of the menu. So be careful and be specific. The menu had a good amount of vegetarian options and meat choices of course. There was a complimentary chips and salsa. I feel like the salsa is the kind that is bought from the store. It was still pretty good and had a little kick to it. I ordered the mamamia Chile Relleno. It came with Mexican rice and black beans with cheese on top. The Chile Relleno had cheese inside of it with shrimp and fish on the top. The sauce it was with was the most delicious part! The rice and beans weren't anything out of the ordinary. The Chili Relleno is a New Mexico restaurant. I love Mexican food and Chili Rellenos. This restaurant has a classic Mexican Decore, artwork and stucco. They Took some time in making the inside to look like you went back in time, an Old Mexican home. I loved all the beautiful wooden carved pieces placed around the restaurant. They offer booths and table seating. The restaurant has an open kitchen setting. This restaurant was fresh and clean. My friend and I were greeted when we walked in and seated right away. We were handed menus and chips and salsa. Chiles Rellenos (literally, stuffed peppers) are one of the classics that Mexican restaurants almost always offer. It's Normally a Pabano Chili filled with cheese, making them ideal for vegetarians. The Chili is battered and then deep fry. They use Queso fresco as their stuffing, a Mexican cheese, Queso fresco has a salty-sour kick, like feta. Ive had Queso Fesco sprinkled on top of my meals as a garnish, but this is the first time I've had it Cooked inside my Chili Relleno. I was surprised the cheese didn't melt and it kept its shape after being fried . All the Chili Relleno I've had in the past, were stuffed with Jack cheese. This restaurant offers 6 different Chili Rellenos. They offered the traditional cheese and they have a few stuffed ones. Please note: When they say "stuffed", the so called "stuffing" is actually on top of the Chili Relleno. The "stuffed" options are carne, vegetarian, corn, seafood and roasted potatoes. I ordered the corn. My Chili Relleno had grilled corn on top with a Verde sauce. It also came with rice and beans. I opted out, on the refried beans and ordered black beans instead. They cook their refried beans with Lard, FYI. My friend ordered the seafood Chili Relleno. Hers came with shrimp and fish with a spicy red sauce. This was her first time having a Chili Relleno. She enjoyed her meal, she especially love the sauce. I ordered The Tardictionales burrito to take home to my husband . I changed the Burrito to my husband's liking and they were happy to do that for me. I went with the Kearny Asada. My Extremely picky Husband, was very happy with his burrito. They also offer Enchiladas, Tacos, Quesadillas, Tamales, Chimichangas, Carnitas, Ceviche, Rice bowls and Salads. I'm giving this restaurant four stars instead of five, because I wasn't a fan of the Salsa, it was not chunky. They give small portions of the salsa and they did not refill our chips. Also I wasn't a fan of the guacamole, It just taste like avocado, it was missing something. All in all, our meal was delicious and our server was attentive and friendly. Pretty good for Mexican food on the windward side. A bit Tex-Mex for my taste but not bad if you stick with the Chile Relleño obviously.
