This was ok...it was a bit loud...and I dont like when it is too loud, I cant taste my food when it is too noisy. While it was nice to have live music, he was okay but not the greatest musician so after an hour, I started to have a headache trying to tune out the music and catch my friends' conversation. The menu is basic, and I ordered a Chile Relleno since the name suggested they may be proud of the dish. Given the prices I give it 3 stars because I've had much better from taco trucks in East Oakand for half the price. I may try it again if they dont have the troubadour and update my review as I usually try a place 3 times before I decide. This was my 2nd time and same experience...salsa seemed out of a jar, beans from a can, tortillas not the best either. Absolutely loved our first experience here! I visited Chile Relleno on a Saturday night with my family (party of 4) and we were seated with no wait and were given a tasty basket of complementary chips and salsa. The restaurant was full but not overwhelming so. The decor and ambiance was fun and lively thanks to the colorful lights and live music. There was a single gentleman playing his guitar and singing, it reminded me of my childhood when my dad used to play for us at family dinners (it honestly made me a little nostalgic) Our waitress was very friendly, patient and attentive. Her interaction with us never felt rushed, she was very genuine but efficient. The food selection was vast! I had a hard time deciding but settled on a favorite, the enchiladas with shredded beef, refried beans and verde sauce was delicious and it was a Great portion size for the price! My boyfriend devoured his grande burrito and our kids said the traditional burrito and quesadillas were scrumptious. We even saved room for some homemade horchata so. Delectable. We so want to love this place. Parking is ample and close. The decor is kinda kitschy, but it's comfortable. (The red metal tractor seats looked like they wouldn't accommodate my wide load, but they were the waiting seats, and people weren't on them all that long). The staff was great. The background music, though, was an "annoyingly loud, repetitive haole Mexican Musak on crack" (to quote my husband). Sorry guys, but you lost a star for the musak alone. Please turn it down. Way down--like off. The food was fresh, served quickly; prices were what we expected (thanks to those who took pictures of the menu). We got salsa and chips and ordered horchata, guacamole, quesadillas, tamale, the ceviche (with shrimp), and fried ice cream. The ceviche, guacamole, and horchata were the best I've ever had. My husband like his quesadillas, beans and rice (I thought the beans were good but the rice was dry). The pork tamales were a nightmare. And that's sad because, to me, tamales should be their own food group; I'll drive to Timbuktu to get good homemade tamales. *sigh* They'd not pulled the pork and left several lychee-sized hunks of fat in the mix (and maybe you like that kind of thing) and it tasted like they'd used powdered spices. Also, while the corn masa shell was cooked, it was thin, white, and gooey. I've made scratch tamales for over 30 years, and I've no idea how they can turn out this way. The fried ice cream was ok but tasted pre-packed. I'm sorry, but the second star lost was for the tamales and fried ice cream. Oh, and they also do not have a full liquor license, but folks brought byob wine and beer, which is fine with us as well. So, to recap. As a restaurant we give this 4 stars. As an overall experience, the awful musak made you just want to leave, so they only get three. We're hoping this was just a bad night, so we'll go again and update if it gets better. read more

I got the chimichanga with ground beef (choice of ground beef, shredded beef, or shredded chicken, or for extra charge you can choose from kalua pork, grilled chicken, or carne asada) and the portions were very generous! It comes with Spanish rice and refried beans. This meal left me full and satisfied! My family ordered the shredded chicken enchiladas and the shredded beef enchiladas, which were delicious as well! The staff are nice and friendly, and covid precautions are in place (staff wears masks, hand sanitizer is provided) to ensure a safe dining experience. Not "almost empty" ... literally not a single customer in the place. And it's not a small place. Sat down at a table for six so I could spread out some paperwork I was working on while eating. The young hostess asked if I would move to a booth. I said, no, I liked a regular chair, not a booth seat. She then pointed to the table next to were I was sitting (small table for two) and asked if I would move to that table. I asked why. "In case we get a big rush," she replied. I slowly looked around, and said "You're kidding, right? I am the only customer here!" "It could get pretty busy at lunch time," was her reply. I eased her concern over what if that the entire restaurant filled up completely in 20 minutes by having lunch elsewhere. So I cannot comment on the food. read more

We liked this place so much we came here twice while vacationing in Oahu! I love Mexican food and this place is as authentic as it gets IMHO. The first time we ordered the steak fajita with the paniolo chile relleno a la carte & the second time we ordered the chicken fajita with the Lanikai chile relleno a la carte. This is plenty of food to share between 2 people. We loved our meals both times but I personally liked the paniolo more than the lanikai. Service was also great. 5 stars all around. read more

I've ordered take out here on several occasions and it has been expensive but pretty good. Yesterday I called in and the server was automatically rude to me. I ignored it. Then went to go pick up my food and was still rude to me. I got a weird feeling and tipped zero dollars on the merchant copy and took a pic of the receipt. I wake up this morning, checked my bank app and noticed they wrote in their own tip of $15.71! I called this morning. The same server was extremely rude and had an attitude with me when I explained to her that this is theft and I wanted to speak to the manager on duty. She said there were no managers present. Which I assume is illegal when this place is a BYOB and there is drinking allowed there. It has been 45 min since I called and no manager has called me back. Do not waste your time going here.
