First, I ordered an adobada taco. The meat wasn't cooked properly on the trompo why ? :( then they threw it on the grill and ended up burning it. That completely defeats the point of even having a trompo if you're just going to burn the meat afterward. It had a bitter, burnt taste. Next, I got a carne asada taco, and it was completely overcooked and dry:(honestly, drier than the Mojave Desert. The tortilla was hard and didn't taste fresh at all. Nothing about the tacos tasted like the quality I remember. The customer service was just as disappointing. I stood in front of the carne asada guy for about 5 minutes before he even acknowledged me. What made that worse was that there were no other customers there t wasn't busy at all. The workers seemed more focused on talking and laughing with each other than paying attention to the food or the customers. I even think I saw what might've been the owner there, which makes this even more frustrating because this place used to be good. It feels like they're letting it go downhill. I'm giving this a one-star review, but I'm being honest when I say I actually want this place to get better. I'll give them one more chance in the future, but as of right now, this was a really bad experience.

Dennise seated us and was so kind, she even shared a few of her favorite menu items since it was our first visit. Our server Anelle was great as well. She was friendly, attentive, and helped us pick some really good dishes. We tried the Tacos Dorados de Papa, El Sampler de la Abuela, and La Bomba, and for appetizers the Burrito de Machaca con Frijoles Puercos and the sweet corn tamal (which ended up being my favorite). The food and ambiance were great, but the service from Dennise and Anelle really stood out. They made our birthday brunch feel special.

Cocina 35 is a popular Mexican brunch spot in San Diego, with 3 locations in the area. I secured a…read morereservation online for Sunday, and I'd recommend that given it does get busy. Cramped and loud, but nicely decorated and serving solid authentic meals. Mexican Latte-9/10: Pretty straightforward. A solid, nostalgic spiced coffee. Mazapan Latte-10/10: A novelty menu item, both nostalgic and tasty. With a sweetened condensed milk rim and mazapan dust, this sweet coffee is a must order. Chilaquiles-10/10: Cocina 35 knows how to throw down the best Mexican breakfast item: the chilaquiles. The Verde was good but didn't pack much heat. The Salsa Secreta was our favorite; a creamy 3-chile salsa with an artichoke flavor, this one packs an enjoyable amount of heat. The Chipotle was another yummy and creamy option, making your nose run but still very enjoyable. Frijoles Puercos-7/10: They were pretty standard. I've definitely had better. They served their purpose as a good side. Concha Rellena-7.5/10: Another creative menu item. Whipped cream and whole strawberries sandwiched between two french toast-style concha halves and drenched in cajeta. It was sweet and warm, but would've been more enjoyable with fresher and/or sliced strawberries. Fun to order, but a regular concha is better suited for enjoying with your coffee. Service-6/10: Again, Cocina 35 gets packed, so service isn't as attentive. Our party had to order and wait for water, ask for refills, call the server over for more orders and again for the bill, and wouldn't speak to us in Spanish. I witnessed other tables be spoken to in Spanish, but upon ordering I'd only be responded to in English. I know I'm a white Mexican, but native tongue is nice when I make it clear I'd like to order in Spanish. Overall, a fun spot with solid menu items. The samplers are pricey but probably the best bang for your buck. They do the classics very well, and are very much worth your visit!

On our most recent stop, we found that the restaurant that was formerly here (Carnitas Y Birria Los Amigos) - was no longer here. After talking to the servers here, we found that the business was sold and this is the new reincarnation. The menu lost some favorites from the previous business such as Menudo, but gained a huge drink menu - which comes in handy when the servers mishear your order and pack a crapton of chili in your tacos! I ordered 2 Tacos with asada, and a burrito with asada, and my order came out within minutes. The food was fresh, the meat portions were generous, and they pack your tacos/burritos full of fresh, tasty, guacamole. There was also a bowl of salsa with CHUNKS of avocado on each table as well. The only downside was that the server must have misheard me when I requested "no spicy", as both my tacos and burritos were probably the spiciest thing I've eaten in a decade. My tongue was burning and the diet coke just made things worse lol. I'll have to be more clear next time we visit. I left feeling satisfied - the best part? My entire meal including my glass bottle of "Coca-cola Light" (which is the Diet Coke south of the border) - was a little under $6 USD. While seating is a bit tighter, they did add some chairs and tables, as well as a "bar" type of area. The restaurant also added another restroom - which is a plus, since the previous restaurant only had one working restroom. Parking is another story - you may have to drive around the block to find some free spots that aren't reserved for businesses. This restaurant is about a 10 minute walk from the pedestrian border crossing at Otay Mesa. Photos included: 1) Menu - they added a drink menu that the previous restaurant didn't have, but they no longer offer Menudo. Note: The prices you see are in pesos, not USD. The exchange rate at the time of my visit was 1 USD = 19 Pesos. 2) My meal: 2x tacos asada and 1x burrito asada.
