I am rating this restaurant on my experience not the food since we left before we even ordered. We walked into the restaurant saw the bar packed with no social distancing and bartenders were NOT wearing masks. We thought ok well let's just eat in the dining area and we will be ok. This restaurant didn't follow NC law of only 50% seating capacity, nor were tables 6 feet apart. The place had close tables any many patrons at same time. Waitress wore mask improperly below her nose. She rushed us to order and to pay at end. The shrimp were frozen not fresh like in every other restaurant we've eaten at. Prices weren't cheap either. Waitress told me the shrimp were large and they turned out to be small shrimp. Very disappointed in the restaurant and meal. Cheese was melted on the plate and rice was tasteless. I was super disappointed with the restaurant. Our waitress was amazing. Really sweet and timely with everything.. I ordered the Carolina fried chicken salad. About half way through it I found a 5 inch long black hair hanging out of the chicken bite. When you look in the back in the area where food is being prepped, no one had hair nets and the lady preparing the fried food had long black hair in a pony tail. The waitress took my meal off however the manager never came out to apologize or even say hi. Prob won't go back. read more

It's pretty tough to find a good fish taco on the east coast. I'm not going to lie and say this one was one of the best I've ever had, but it was one of the best I've had on the east coast (second only to Cabo Fish Taco in Blacksburg, VA). It was a ton of food, though, which seems to be the M.O. of all the restaurants in OBX. That's a waste for me, since I'm always vacationing and don't have any use for leftovers, especially leftover seafood. But I digress... The waiter was really cool and personable, even if his sideburns-only hairdo made us raise our eyebrows. He stopped and talked to us for a while and was very helpful with choosing our meals. The margaritas are just delicious. And large. A winning combination in my book. The bartender was real friendly, too, with a bit of sass. Also a winning combination. We didn't make it back on Thursday, but apparently they have a fenced-in area outside where they have live music and cornhole and all that good stuff. It's a lesser-known, chill restaurant and bar conveniently located next to a Brew Thru, and I'll definitely go back next time I'm in the area. read more

So to start off I initially went out to get sushi, but after driving a while I saw Chili Peppers restaurant so I stopped. Mixed review on this local restaurant and bar. Shrimp at the bar was great. Weekend brunch was great. My rating would be higher if the two attractive bartenders wouldn't have have been so unfriendly last night to our group of two couples who sat at the high tops in the center. There was a very light crowd. From the beginning they scowled at us and never bothered to walk from behind the bar. I could understand it if it was the end of a long hard night but this activity was solely directed at us. Smiles and warmth to everyone else. In addition, the security guy sat hovering behind us the entire time. We were not being unruly so the icy reception was completely uncalled for. Despite all that we have them a generous tip. Brunch food and staff were excellent on Sunday. Staff was efficient, friendly and nice but that all changed on Wednesday night at the bar. read more

For the past several years during our visits to the OBX, we have been getting carryout dinner from Chilli Peppers. We have never been disappointed as the food has always been very good and the employees are always very friendly. This year, I tried the Cuban sandwich and crab cake sub which were outstanding, especially the Cuban sandwich. We also got cheese fries, burgers, and chicken wings which were very good along with the excellent house salad which came with sliced parmesan cheese. The side dishes, especially the black beans and rice, are great too. I have really enjoyed everything I have tried over the years. If you're visiting the OBX, try Chilli Peppers. We stopped in for a late breakfast and were seated right away. Typical beach decor that you find at most restaurants in the OBX so nothing that stands out as different/unique. The coffee we had with breakfast was OK but tasted of cheap quality beans. I did like the large coffee cups they were served in however. I chose the tamale egg breakfast with sausage. The tamale was very moist and tasty however there was too much cheese and the sausage was bland (not very spicy). The waitress we had was very attentive and was there on multiple occasions to make sure we had what we needed including many refills. I give the customer service 5 stars! I would give this place zero stars if I could! They gave my daughter a cup full of sprite in what was clearly a crayon cup. Oysters were inedible. None of the food was worth the stop. Upon going in the bathroom one of the waitresses is getting dressed. While trying to wash my hands she never moves out of the way or speaks to me. This was a first time for us at Chilli Peppers. We were there on a Sunday for lunch. The place is not large and was reasonably busy, even in January. They feature Mexican and Caribbean influenced foods. Let's leave it at "influenced". I chose Tacos El Pastor. I assumed this was supposed to be like tacos al pastor or maybe these were actually made from real shepherd. But no, the description says "pork" so no shepherds were harmed. The pork was grilled with a light seasoning and served with cilantro and onion on corn tortillas. They were accompanied by a pineapple salsa. These were good if you just call them grilled pork tacos. They were not good if you were expecting tacos al pastor (or even tacos El pastor). Just providing some form of pineapple does not make them "al pastor". The idea is that the pork is marinated and cooked on a spit the way you might imagine a shepherd would do. El Tizoncito in Mexico City claims to have invented the idea, true or not, I don't know. El Fogoncito also serves a good version. The pineapple sundae topping made from canned pineapple and overly sweet like jam is not what should be served with them. It's too easy to grill some fresh pineapple. I did not use the pineapple jam. The tomatillo salsa listed on the menu did not show up on my serving so I tried their own bottled jalapeno salsa, it was just OK. The sides were not good. Black beans over seasoned with cumin (because that is what makes food Mexican! Wait, no, that makes it bad Tex-Mex). Worse, they had no salt, none. I ate one bite. The rice was Uncle Ben's or Sysco equivalent plastic pellet instant rice also with no seasoning or salt and in this case not even the ever popular cumin. Again one bite. Fish 'n' Chips were Rockfish that day and that was Ms T's selection. She was served one nice sized filet. This was very good fish, mild, moist and coated right. It was dramatically better than the flounder I had the night before at Rooster's. The slaw mercifully had no onion, and was OK, just needed a bit more vinegar. We both liked the fish, but the chips were the thinnest I have ever seen, measured I think in a few Angstroms. They were also the greasiest we have ever had, fried in old oil. We could not eat them. Would we return? Maybe. The tacos were fine, just named wrong. I would order with just cilantro and ask for lime wedges. It seems they know how to fry and probably grill fish, so fish tacos should be good. I would be pretty selective about the "Mexican" food. This is a pretty gringo place in their execution, letting too much American influence in. Sides were hit (slaw) and miss, mostly miss (potato chips, black beans and rice). I am rating two stars, reserving one for hopefully some good fish tacos. But for now, all I can do is rate what we had on the first visit. The "proteins" as they like to call them were good, the rest left a lot to be desired. The proteins are what would bring me back after a 2 star meal. read more

My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday of the OBX Food Fest and, while we ordered off the regular menu, it was delicious. Our server was friendly and helpful, guiding us to some of her personal favorites on the menu as well as the special Tuna Sashimi (which sold out shortly after we ordered ours!). PES had the Steamed Catch (Rockfish), a generous portion and very nicely prepared. I had the Fish Tacos, a large variety of toppings with the fried rockfish "nuggets" served with soft tortillas for a DIY experience. We drove by this place a few times and checked their menu online. It seemed like it had enough variety. This was not Mexican food to me. It was more American/Mexican. I ordered the fish tacos, 1 shark, 1 tuna. I had part of the shark which was nice and flaky. The tuna was overcooked and dry....I only had one bite before I discovered a hair in my plate. I sent it back. The manager never came over to talk to me about it. I had the giant margarita as my dinner. Everyone else in my group enjoyed their food and giant portions. They also didn't serve chips and salsa at the beginning, you could order it from the appetizer menu if you wanted it. I thought that was odd, considering most "Mexican" restaurants don't charge you for that. I thought it was over priced for what it was. Two words, DON'T GO! I have harped before on the multitude of bad restaurants on the Outer Banks and Chili Peppers is right up there. I was down last November (belated review) for the annual Outer Banks Half Marathon which has to date always been scheduled on a Sunday. Nikki and I drove down Saturday to have lunch, do a few things around the family cottage and have dinner before I had to hit the sack early. I know my grandmother has eaten at Chili Pepper's with my aunt and I hope they had a better experience than we did. Chili Peppers offers Tex-Mex style food and a good deal of fried seafood (why does everyone want to fry everything at these mediocre restaurants on the OBX?). Nikki ordered the Chicken Taco Salad and said it was pretty lame. The vegetables were tired and the chicken rubbery. I, on an equally bad note, selected the tuna steak sandwich. The tuna was so fishy, I could not eat it. And what is with the bread at restaurants? The bun was terrible, cold and the cheapest, grade F type you might find at a Bottom Dollar should you venture in there. I do not, but my suspicions tell me that type of bread would exist there. The decor reminded me of a bad dream. Dark red carpeting, very cheap wood tables and VERY uncomfortable chairs, those straight back 'cottage' chairs that want to make you stand up and eat. There were quite a few other victims having lunch and I do not know their opinions, but I sure do know one thing. I will never eat there again. Luckily, it was not expensive or the hot air from anger would have shot me to the moon and back. My fiancé and I ate at Chilli Peppers today for lunch. Let me tell y'all, their food was to die for! They had the best shrimp appetizer, and their tuna and rockfish tacos were awesome. The owner walked around the restaurant the whole time, which was a breath of fresh air. He even makes his own jerky and gives samples to the customers. We were looking for lunch on Nags Head. Walked in and were seated immediately. (It is November, so that's a factor). The owner, Jim, came over to our table and made some beer suggestions. We ordered smoked wings as an appetizer and they were fantastic! Jim overheard me as for some hot sauce from the container on the table and He asked that I try some spicy habanero BBQ sauce he obtained from behind a stack of condiments over the server'a area. WOW!! Best idea yet! My partner had the Cajun chicken little, I had the shrimp Po-Boy, and my son had the fish and chips. We were NOT disappointed. Everything was cooked perfectly!! Service was awful. We came in for a boozy Sunday Brunch around 930. Our server informed us that NC doesn't serve alcohol until 10 on Sundays so we could eat and hang out until then. That sounded good to us so we ordered our food awhile. Our server didn't come back once after our food was dropped off except to drop the check off. My husbands breakfast was missing an item and I tried several times to get her attention without blatantly getting up or yelling. She had three tables and the restaurant was slow so there wasn't any reason she couldn't check on us. She dropped our check off at 10 and asked if there was anything else. Tuesday Taco night well worth the trip. $1 & $3 tacos, $1 off draft beers and $5 margaritas. Our waitress LAUREN is wonderful. Knowledgeable, pleasant and prompt- was there just when needed drink refill or more tacos. The only down is website says open @4:30, sign was on OPEN, but bartender kept telling everyone not open until 5pm. Not very welcoming. Lauren made up for it and told us we were fine, as well as others who came in before 5pm. We also love the Tapas night, great variety and we'll prepared. Generous portions for "small" plates. My sisters and I were evacuated right before Hurricane Florence hit the Outer Banks. We had been in the line of traffic for some time and it had just started to move when this little place caught my eye. What a treat! The food was authentic and on time. I think this was my third time at Chili Peppers. Previously, I had fish tacos that were not bad. While they weren't particularly memorable, they were good enough I was not afraid to go back. I don't remember what I had the first time. Today I had the chicken tamales. Admittedly, the ratio of dough to filling is a matter of taste and varies by region, however, these had almost too thick of a dough, which is saying a lot considering I love the doughy part. Usually. Served with rice and beans, the portion was large and the meal very filling, even if it did not distinguish itself taste wise. Our party of 7 got a wide variety of food (seafood, mexican, burgers) and we all loved our meals and were completely satisfied. Worst experience at a restaurant, blamed service on past year... not acceptable to people who pay 25$ per meal plus drinks and appetizers. All you gotta do is have good service and take accountability. Ticket times were horrible and staff was rude. Got asked for my ID three times when trying to order drinks at bar because server wasn't keeping up with our drink order, mind you there was three of us so not a big group. This was my first and last time there, extremely disappointed in management and staff for the service we received.
