My family and I visited Chimney Rock in Whippany today for the first time, but I am sure it will not be the last. Our server Kai was attentive and helpful in offering recommendations from the menu which is extensive. I had the sliced steak over sweet potatoes, and it was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly. Others had salad which was filled with veggies and dressed with a light dressing, pizza and grown-up grilled cheese sandwich with brisket. We finally tried the new Chimney Rock restaurant this weekend after passing its packed parking lot for months. Turns out, the crowd isn't a fluke--the place is a massive operation. Despite the crowd, the two of us were whisked to a table surprisingly fast.The overall ambiance is modern and sleek, except for the room we were seated in. It featured an aggressive wall of tacky, fake plastic flowers that practically screamed, "We had five minutes left on our design budget and a Michaels coupon." Our server was nice enough but radiated the quiet panic of a person fighting for their life on a busy shift. Skip the drinks (sober life for me), we dove straight into the mains. My girlfriend ordered the Impossible Burger, and I went with the steak entree served over sweet potato wedges. It came with an "interesting" sauce that I was skeptical about, but it actually pulled the whole dish together nicely. Both meals were cooked perfectly to order. I wouldn't call it the most memorable culinary experience of my life, but the food tasted good and the pricing was very reasonable. The only real shock came at the end: this place moves tables with NASCAR-pit-crew efficiency. Our server literally snatched my plate out from under me as I was chewing my final bite. My wife and I met up with friends for dinner at the Chimney Rock last night. It was my first time here, she had been here once before. This is a new restaurant that just opened up within this past year in Whippany. I didn't love this place but didn't hate it either. A couple of things I did love was my Rum Punch cocktail and the Garlic Knots appetizer....both were delicious! I had the brisket sandwich with sweet potato fries as an entree. The fries were good, but the sandwich was just ok. I expected the ambience inside to be nicer. Looking at the building from the outside gives you the impression that it would be pretty cool inside, but it was pretty ordinary. The bar area may be nicer, there was also live music when we were leaving. I think next time I come back we may just get seats at the bar, I may appreciate it more. read more

Dear Yelp, Lots of things to like about Chimney Rock Inn. They have ample parking and great weekly specials. The 28inch pizza for $19.99 on a Monday is a steal for large groups. The crust tastes like a bar pie, but for $20 who can complain? The brisket special with sweet potato wedges was a highlight. I enjoyed the Mahi mahi tacos and my daughter said the burger was good. Chimney Rock Inn in Whippany is a terrific spot for a casual, tasty, and reasonably priced meal with friends and family. I recently stopped in for dinner and had a really good experience all around. We chose to sit in the bar area, which offers both tables and seating along the bar itself and great service from the attentive and friendly staff. While it isn't a sports bar, there are enough TVs around that at least one is always in your line of sight to watch sporting events. For my meal, I ordered the Mayan Chipotle Chicken Sandwich ($16). The chipotle-marinated grilled chicken breast was well-seasoned and came topped with applewood bacon, guacamole, and charred tomato on a toasted brioche bun. It is definitely messy to eat, but incredibly flavorful and very tasty. My dining companion really enjoyed the Mahi Mahi Tacos ($18), which includes three soft-shell street tacos packed with blackened fish, salsa verde, avocado, cotija cheese, and coleslaw. The restaurant delivers exactly what you want out of a neighborhood spot -- reliable comfort food, a laid-back vibe, and fair prices. Four stars for the excellent bar service and delicious food. Not really sure where to begin - this was just not good all the way around. The outside suggests a cool rustic/country farm vibe - inside well...We got seating in the back room which was loud and seemed to be the kid/family room - yellow walls, weird 80's plaid curtains and no decorations - Basically the private party overflow room. We ordered drinks, my old fashion had a salty taste, and the frozen margarita took so long to be served, it was melted. We ordered some chips and guac, queso tater tots and garlic pretzels - the tots were cold, the pretzels were garlic knots - the chips and guac were decent. Asked for the manager to replace the melted drink and tots - which was done with an apology. When the drink came back - it was wrong. Asked for water multiple times. We then ordered the buffalo chicken pizza and a Greek salad. The salad was very heavy on the dressing and was overly sweet. The legendary pizza was anything but - a flavorless cracker style crust - that couldn't hold the toppings. Someone else said Chucky Cheese - I'd agree. Also you don't use a tomato based sauce with buffalo chicken. Our server was nice, I don't blame him for the food issues, but they seemed overwhelmed and the bussing staff needs better training. We went to this highly anticipated restaurant with mixed feelings. Some of us were hoping to be wowed, while others expected to be let down. And we ended up having a mixed experience to go with those mixed feelings. We had a reservation but still needed to wait a few minutes for a table. The place was packed on a Saturday night for dinner (6pm-ish). We were seated in the back "yellow" room that looked like the inside of a barn. It wasn't as cute or as atmospheric as the front room with the fire place. We were a little disappointed. Also, they sat five of us at a table for four, so we were squeezed in pretty tight...and again, we had a reservation so they knew there would be five of us. Service was very slow. It took quite a few minutes for our server to come to our table and get our drink order. But the drinks were on point...we ordered some of the fancy cocktails and were honestly quite happily surprised at how good they were. I loved the French 75. The buttered pretzel was a great way to start the meal. All the food was amazing. We had some pizza, an order of pierogis, a pasta dish to name a few...all plates were pretty much licked clean. But it took forever to get drink refills (we had to chase the server down) and also to get the check. I wish the decor was less uneven between the rooms. I wish the back room was cuter and less loud. I went to the Whippany, NJ location with my parents, brother-in-law and sister and we didn't have to wait for a seat because we came early. We were seated in the dining area that was spacious and bright. Kyle, our waiter was friendly and took care of us and was very attentive to our needs. I used to go to the other two Chimney Rock Inns in Somerset County, so when this one popped up in Whippany, I was very excited! On the night we got food from CRI we decided to get take out, I wasn't in the mood for pizza so I opted for the Rock Chop Salad. The salad was good. I got the Southwestern dressing. It wasn't thick like I expected. My wife ordered chips and guac. Chips and the guac were average at best. It isn't quite what we'd get at a good Mexican restaurant (not that I expected something exceptional from a place known more for its pizza). Overall, it was good. I wasn't sure what to expect prior to going to this new place but I was pleasantly surprised. As a vegetarian a lot bar/ restaurants don't have many options for me but I felt this place had several good options. I got the Impossible burger and it was good. My non-vegetarian boyfriend got steak over the sweet potatoes and he liked it. He is very picky about his food especially steak but he said it was decent. There seemed to be a lot of families there so I will assume it's a good place to bring the kiddies. Wasn't a fan of the fake flowers in the pots on the wall but that's just my opinion. Overall, it's a really cool spot with a rustic barn/cabin vibe. The bar area is inviting, and it's definitely family-friendly. Overall, I'd give the food a solid B-. It was good, but not great. My daughter loved the Caesar salad, and I really enjoyed the American hamburger--it was cooked exactly the way I ordered it. My wife and I visited the newest location for this group of restaurantes on Saturday, having been to both Bridgwater and Flemington area locations in the past. Walking in, was surprised how much the interior borrows it's looks from the Flemington spot, almost exact mirror view. On the right, more family style dining room and on the left is a bar with high tops and booths. We were escorted to the left which was fine by us. We ordered a pitcher of Miller Lite, served up cold. The wife got a mixed cocktail which she was was good. We started by splitting a garden salad and order of fried pickles, both were just great and served quickly. She got a Founder's pizza with added onion, a small which she literally brought 3/4 home with us. I ordered a large pizza with onions and peppers, did not disappoint. They really get their thin crust right here, it's the best in the area. The cost was in the pocket, pretty much what I'd expect. Got takeout from here - buffalo wings (GF) with guacamole and chips and a coke. The wings were large and juicy. The buffalo flavor didn't pack a punch like I expected it to. Guac to chip ratio was kind of funny actually. The guac portion was pretty small and there were a LOT of chips with it that ended up going to waste. Lastly, the coke was child size. One of the worst experiences in recent memory. Look, I get the place is newer and massive but at the same time, staff accordingly especially in the kitchen. We went early (5pm) on a Tuesday recently. Host was not very friendly however the waitress made up for it (only reason the one star). Not many people inside and literally 5-10 staff standing around waiting for action. We ordered the Fried Pickles which came out in less than 5 minutes. Sweet, we are on a roll. That's when the sh*t hit the fan. We ordered our entrees and about an hour later the food came out...yeah, no lie. Place wasn't still busy (although they had a car show going on outside). To add insult to injury they bring out one of the dishes WITHOUT the protein (salmon). 20 minutes later it comes out which at that point was unacceptable. Received the check and the meal was on there...you kidding me. I asked to see the manager and 10 more minutes later she comes over, no hello, no sorry...just we took it off the bill...zero personality. Honestly how is this place going to make it. The chicken looked like it was boiled or steamed. No grill marks. I tasted a small piece. Wet and like sponge. No seasoning. Partially undercooked. I pushed the dish away. They apologized and took it off the bill. Asked if I wanted anything else or something to go. I responded, "No thank. I love me some Chimney Rock Inn, and even better, there's now a location that's much closer. I was really hyped to try out the new location and finally made it there this past weekend. The layout and décor looked pretty standard for Chimney Rock, so it is very similar to its sister locations. My trio arrived a few minutes after opening on Saturday, so it wasn't quite busy yet. We were seated in a separate room off to the side, which would be great during busy times if you want to avoid a higher noise level from the main area. Our server seemed a bit disconnected but managed to get our orders through correctly. We started with drinks and tots, which was a great way to kick off our early lunch. They have so many gluten-free items on the menu, which is one of the top reasons I love the Chimney Rock Inn to begin with. I decided to try a new dish and went with the gnocchi rosa, which was quite good, if not slightly too al dente for some bites. The server seemed a bit off about the fact that I didn't clear my plate of gnocchi, even though I had a small salad and the tots for our app. Nothing ruins my meal more than feeling like I'm being critiqued for not finishing all my food. I stopped in during the soft opening and was genuinely impressed. The cedar-plank salmon was the star of the night--loaded with flavor, beautifully presented, and cooked perfectly. The space itself is gorgeous: brand-new, spotless, and surprisingly spacious, which made the whole experience feel elevated. The mac and cheese didn't quite hit the mark for me; it could use a bit more depth of flavor and creaminess. But the fried pickles more than made up for it. Not pictured, but absolutely unforgettable--perfectly sliced, super crunchy, and so addictive I ended up ordering a second round. Service-wise, our waitress was still learning the menu, but you could tell she cared. She was friendly, attentive, and genuinely trying to make our visit great. We've already returned since then, and the consistency keeps us coming back. With such a huge menu, there's always something new to try. Portion of chicken provided on the tacos was abysmal. One radish slice, and a light sprinkle of cojita cheese. Mostly all tortilla for the $13 tag. Flavors were lackluster, yet there was a good little kick in terms of heat. Nonetheless, I would not order those again. Wouldn't rush back, yet would not rule out trying again. Just not sure how much faith I have in that kitchen. Tacos done with attention and care, like many other dishes, can simply leave you wanting to return immediately. Although the high ceilings don't help the noise level and I found the bar room to be a bit stark without some natural light. Food was fine. Wings, nachos and pretzels were all fine. Pizza was good but a bit too thin for my tastes. Good draft beer selection, served nice and cold. Service was very good but she was a visiting server from their other location. The busboys need some work. Three times behind us trays were dropped, scaring the daylights out of us. Good place to go with the kids or a couple of buddies. read more

Went on a rainy Wednesday night, so we were able to walk right in. Both my friend and I had the onion soup which was wonderful. They did the cheese brown and bubbly and the soup was seasoned just right! I ordered the fish and chips which was the best I ever had... three large pieces of fish which had a great crispy batter and delicious fish ! The pizza at the Berkeley Heights location was a thin crust and much tastier than at rt10. The pizza at the rt 10 location was thicker and soggy. I get it that this is a relatively new location for this restaurant. They need to duplicate the food and cooking they had at the Berkeley Heights location. read more
