What a gem! Had a business dinner here on a cold December evening. The restaurant was packed - holiday celebrations, a few special occasions, it seemed like everyone was happy to be there. The holiday decorations added to the festive mood. Appetizers were great, particularly the burrata salad and the pear salad. A colleague loved his escargot but I can't attest to that! Rods has lost its reputation as a premier steakhouse. Having come here for over 40 years it is sad to see what is has become The steaks are no longer prime cuts. They are more like Applebee's. Not even as good as Texas Roadhouse I ordered the cowboy-chop. I should have realized it no longer mentioned that it was a prime cut and it was clearly not. It was greasy. This place has so much potential as long as the new owners don't knock it all down for housing!! This could really be a destination type steakhouse (Think Berns Steakhouse Tampa) if you get the right team in here running this place. Love the old school vibe, decor, train cars and history. I shared the tuna tartare as an appetizer (9/10 very good I just wish they gave you some wonton strips or something that you could put the tartare on top to eat it) and then ordered the Chilean sea bass (7/10 the sea bass was amazing but the sauce and locking noodles lacked really any flavor). I then tried my friend's cheesecake and it definitely was not worth it (4/10 it had no good crust and the actual cheesecake seemed too gelatinous for my liking). The setting was perfect in that it was perfectly suited for our party. The staff were super in helping us prepare for this special day. The location allowed some guests to take NJT from NYC and Hoboken as well as Newark Airport. The overall vibe of the entire hotel and restaurant was very uplifting. There was a wedding, engagement party as well as our event occurring simultaneously. All seemed to go very smoothly. So glad we picked this location for our daughter in law's baby shower. read more

I recently booked the "Tea in the Parlor Cars" experience at Rod's Steak and Seafood with a group of 5 friends. We were all so excited for this experience and the ambiance did not disappoint. The parlor cars are beautifully decorated with ornate chandeliers, stained glass, and cute tableware for a fabulous tea party. I loved how each guest had their own place card. This was a sweet touch! Definitely show up in your best dressed outfit. It's great for a photo opportunity. The experience is approximately 90 minutes beginning at noon and ending at 1:30. Once we checked in, we had our own section. We received two tiers of finger sandwiches and scones. Some of the selections included egg/chicken salad sandwiches, macaroons, and scones with jam and butter. The display was quite cute, however, the amount given was not enough for a party of 5. My friends and I were expecting more food or the option of bringing out seconds since our tickets were $67 per person. I understand that this is a tea experience so I didn't expect to have a large meal. Perhaps staggering the food throughout the experience would have allowed us to appreciate the different food options. Many of us were finished with the food before we received tea. We were given a menu of tea selections to choose from. We had to select one tea for our party, and servers came around closer toward the end of the experience to ask if we wanted to try a different variety of tea. Took my mom to dinner on 3/7/26. The crab bisque was thin but still rich & flavorful. The table ordered 2 steaks med rare (prime rib & delmonico) & they came out medium at best. Also lacked seasoning. Service was relaxed, some would say slow but I enjoyed the space between courses. In spite of their good reputation, it's been years since I had an awesome steak at Rods. Part of the restaurant is located in an old train car, with the bulk of it in an enormous building designed to look like a train station. Kudos to building and maintaining a pretty cool themed interior. Everyone in our group went with steaks and they were all pretty good. I got a cowboy ribeye on the bone for a very reasonable price. It was cooked perfectly (medium rare was what I ordered) and decently salt and peppered. My wife got the filet mingon and it was nice and tender. One thing I liked is that we ordered a wine and they didn't have it in the year we ordered, so they gave us the same brand in an older year (for the cost of the newer year). That's a classy thing to do given that they must have taken a small financial hit on it. Overall, a delicious dinner for a reasonable price. read more

Yet, you'll find down to earth and very kind servers ready to bring whatever you need in seconds. The food is phenomenal. At these prices I often find that the food lacks substance, but I was very impressed by both the ingredients and flavors on display. The "Scallops and Polenta" I ate was perfectly cooked. The polenta was smooth and creamy while the scallops were juicy and tender. A few of us ordered a special "Crab Stuffed Salmon" which was also a hit. The waiter accepted my request, but when the bill was presented, we found that we were charged an additional $9. for the substitution. We visited Rods Steakhouse last night for our Christmas celebration with a party date, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. From the moment we were seated, we felt as though we were being overlooked. It took an unusually long time to receive drinks, and after waiting roughly 45 minutes, we actually had to get up and ask the front desk if someone could assist us. Basic service details were missing. Bread was never brought to the table until well after we had already placed our order. When the food finally arrived, one dinner was omitted for about 10 minutes while the rest of the table was served. This was especially frustrating considering the order was very simple--filet mignon. To make matters worse, one guest received a prime rib that was very cold. What was most surprising was that despite these issues, we never once saw a manager come to the table to acknowledge the problems or check on our experience. The lack of attention to detail and accountability is not what we expected from a restaurant we have patronized for over 40 years. Sadly, the experience has declined to the point where there are now better dining options available, and we will not be returning. read more

It's huge and we ate upstairs - where the tables are large, comfortable and very spread out. We ordered a flatbread for the table to share and enjoyed the warm bread in a basket served with butter. The flatbread was huge and I probably could have stopped there, but I ordered a veggie burger with a side of sweet potato fries. Portion was huge and the bun was tremendous; I wasn't able to finish it. Others at the table got a regular burger, another veggie burger and crab cakes. I'd describe the food as "solid". The fine folks that took us here are regulars as they live nearby. That's how they describe the food here, too. Solid. Predictable, decent quality American-style fare. I just attended a wedding here on Sunday, July 20. I was always led to believe that this was an upper scale venue, and apparently the bride and groom believe that too. The wedding was held in the atrium. The ambience was very nice. The service was mediocre at best. The most important thing about a wedding is the food. THAT IS WHAT YOUR PAYING FOR. It was complete garbage. I can't even express how pissed off I was. I could've gotten a better meal at the Golden corral. Take my advice and stay away from this place. After hearing of Rod's for so long, my wife and I finally met friends and enjoyed an excellent dinner there last night. The decor of this restaurant is "old school steakhouse". Beautiful chandelier, dark wood, very elegant. After ordering drinks (my whiskey sour was spot on), we ordered appetizers, soups, and salads. I had the French Onion soup which was fine. My wife had the salad off the specials menu and thought it was outstanding...Arugula with pecans, goat cheese, and blueberries. For entrees, we all ordered steak. My filet, medium rare, was delicious, cooked just right. I was surprised they didn't have Bearnaise sauce, but it was fine. Sides of creamed spinach and roasted mushrooms rounded out the meal perfectly! This is a nice steakhouse with reasonable prices for what you are getting, so it makes a good place for a special occasion without breaking the bank. The bread basket has a couple of different options. We got petite filets and split lobster mac n cheese and French fries. The steak was perfectly cooked, a nice char on the outside and tender on the inside. It came with a cooked tomato that didn't add anything for me. The lobster mac n cheese was such a large portion it would have worked well as the only side. It came with huge chunks of lobster and get cheesy flavor. The fries were good as well. We were so full after the exquisite meal we had no room for dessert. We did however look at the private rooms and book one for a future event. They have a train car which is a unique attachment. Plenty of parking outside and seemed crowded, so don't forget to make a reservation first. read more

Dined here with another couple as a last-minute plan. Rod's did not disappoint! Even though when dining upstairs, it feels like you're on the Titanic ;-) the ambience is white tablecloth class. Our server was very professional and took great care of us. We started with martinis, the jumbo shrimp cocktail, and escargot. All were delicious. We were here a few times a few weeks ago for business. I had 2 out of state and 1 out of country colleagues in town. The restaurant itself is great. It's a different atmosphere than the usual. The food was good, but the hosts and servers we had were so rude. It felt like we were intruding on a private party each time we ate, no matter who was taking care of us. I promise we are nice people. They were extremely impatient and would roll their eyes if someone asked a question. They were noticeably annoyed. I'm used to eating at steakhouses where we get along well with the waitstaff and are able to develop a good rapport. It was impossible here. There was nothing I could do to lighten the mood with them. It was so embarrassing to expose visitors to that. We ate at other establishments as well and had opposite experiences, so I truly don't feel like it was us. Maybe I will venture again with my husband on a weekend, but I will definitely skip the reservations the next time we have visitors. read more

Up and down the menu entrées were pretty good. Unfortunately they missed the boat on the appetizers.. The menu is not very large or extensive, so you would think everything was done perfect. Really a bit disappointed on the apps and the side dishes. Bartenders, servers, really darn good and well trained. Just not impressed with what came out of the kitchen. Wasn't bad, but expected to be wowed . Really impressed with the Management service from the time we arrived to the time we left ... great place to bring clients, and to have a large group party.. wish the apps and the side dishes could've been a notch better. Meeting up with friends for a holiday dinner, we found Rod's steakhouse, it has old world steakhouses charm, great bar and stain glass ceiling along with the cherry wood work outstanding. The full bar was nice, prices are high average but worth it. the menu was what you expect at a steakhouse and was cooked exactly how we ordered it, wait staff was very good and no rushing us at all, the only downside and not a big one at all were the sides a bit limited. Would definitely recommend it as an alternative to the named steakhouse. read more

Went in with high hopes, but left disappointed. While our waiter was a nice guy and somewhat attentive, the experience and meal left us disappointed. For appetizers the $22.00 for a crab and shrimp "martini" appetizer - both crab and shrimp were obviously thawed from frozen and had zero taste. Beet salad was shared and pretty tasty. After appetizers we waited at least 45 mins, perhaps more, for our entrees. Pretty much everyone around us - even those that ordered after us - were served before us. Waiter apologized and bought us drinks - which was cool, but it dampened the night and the experience. For dinner, the sea bass was very good. The scallop and polenta entree was decent, although the scallops were a bit over cooked and chewy. The brussel sprout side dish was underwhelming - luke warm on arrival and the brussels were soft/mushy and overcooked. For $200, there are much better restaurants out there. Rod's Steak & Seafood Grille is located inside the Madison Hotel, upon arrival you'll have to valet park your car, once inside the building you'll notice an entrance for GK's Red Dog Tavern (I was slightly confused at first) if you keep walking straight you'll find your hostesses for Rod's. I would recommend getting a reservation, if you plan to pop in without one, you may be waiting awhile. The establishment is fairly large with an upstairs and downstairs seating area. The ambiance here is very dark and romantic - the perfect place for a date night. My fiancé and I both ordered the 9 oz Filet Mignon paired with the Crispy Shallot Mashed Potatoes and the Vidalia Sweet Onion Strings (delicious you need to order these). All and all the restaurant was gorgeous,the food was just okay, and the wait staff was excruciating dull and slow. There was live music being played downstairs near the bar, I may be back to grab a drink and listen to some music, but in regards to dining I'd choose to go else where. read more
