Later, another group of people joined them, and the combined group wanted to sit together. The waitress explained that guests were not permitted to move chairs which is exactly what they did. From what I observed, the waitress remained professional and was simply enforcing the restaurant's seating and safety policies which is actually advertised on the front entrance door of the restaurant. Large groups are required to make reservations, which they had not done. It appears that this group felt entitled to make themselves at home at the restaurant. When they didn't get what they wanted, they made comments like 'be sure not to leave a tip' to influence other customers. They became upset making a scene before ultimately leaving the restaurant. But before leaving, they requested water drinks to take with them. Their yelp review commented that the waitress was "really, really rude and nasty." If this were the case, why did the waitress act professionally and provided them water cups to go? I have no reason to defend or promote this restaurant; I simply believe that when a review presents a situation very differently from what an independent witness observed, it is fair to provide the other side of the story. This is an established restaurant in the community that has been around for decades.

I live in El Cajon but I have eaten American/Chinese food all over the country side including SF and NY. I am not fond of authentic Chinese food as it tends to be either too hot or too oily. This is a great place for a typical family toned down Chinese food that is kid friendly. I have been coming her twice a week for three months and never have been disappointed. Here is what I find is really tasty. 1. The Honey Walnut Shrimp is out of this world. 2. All of there Salt and Pepper items are a perfect blend of Salt and Pepper with a very nice crunch and not soggy at all. 3. Great Sweet and Sour, Orange or Lemon Chicken or Seafood. 4. Best Salt and Pepper wings. Better than the ones one in National City. 5. I am Asian, and mom Woked everything so I kinda got some experience in Wok Cooking 6. The food is just really good. 7. It is a small business and they get overwhelmed with the take out request and delivery on the weekends. Get your food Mon-Thurs for some great dishes. 8. Just started working in El Cajon and wanted to see what this place was all about. With such great reviews, I ordered a lunch special for pick up to share with my co worker... I expected amazing food and great service but instead received a pretty big amount of just mediocre food and sucky service. I asked for 2 to go cups of sriracha and when I seen they were super small I asked for a third for such a huge serving of food and the counter ladies entire attitude changed. She looked at me like I was asking for her arm. LOL! She said "I already give you 2" I was like I know but I like a lot and even put ANOTHER dollar in the tip jar and she instead of grabbing the larger to go cups already filled she grabbed another small cup and filled it 1/2 way! LOL!! Let's just say I stopped at the store on the way back to my office and bought a bottle of sriracha. My entire office had a big laugh about it and said they all weren't impressed by the food anyway. Just my true experience. read more

I called the restaurant, and the person who answered was so patient and helpful, answering every single question I had. It was really nice. I gave them a pickup time, and it was totally worth it. We tried the Beef Lo Mein ($15.99), Shrimp House Special Fried Rice ($14.99), Salt & Pepper Shrimp ($19.99), and Homestyle Tofu ($14.99). Everything was delicious, flavorful, and perfectly salty. The portions were generous, enough for the two of us, which was amazing. Just a heads-up: since it's a restaurant, if you're sensitive to salt, you might want to ask them to go easy on it. This place is not trying to reinvent, fancy up or fusion up chinese food. They are a strip mall chinese restaurant like dozens of other ones around the county. You know, every strip mall has one. So in comparison, I have to say this one is a standout. It is a standout because they actually do chinese food, not the americanized type. Sure you can still see those old standards on the menu, but their offerings lean more on the authentic side. True, still a far cry from the back rooms of San Francisco chinese joints where I would let my chinese companions order off menu. But a big improvement from what americans thought chinese food was like. read more

Yeah, don't listen to the one star reviews. The food is excellent here. The people complaining about the inside of the restaurant not being up to décor. Come on people this is a Chinese take out restaurant with a few seats. There are over 100 five star reviews so what is wrong with you. Look at one of the reviewers DS only gives one stars out and never a five. The place has excellent customers service. If you complain about the price you don't have to eat there. If you complain about how salty the Salt and Pepper wings are they are Salt and Pepper wings. Go somewhere else if you going to complain. Geez read more

Simply great Chinese food. We ordered Lo Mein, Walnut shrimp, Sweet & sour pork, steamed veggies, & fried rice. The lo mein had beef , pork & shrimp great flavor. The walnut shrimp was tasty & plentiful. Sweet & sour pork was great. Pork was tender & the sauce was perfection. Yummy steamed veggies with sauce on the side. Best Chinese food in El Cajon. Serving sizes are large & worth the price. I highly recommend China 1968. read more

I'm uncertain if the ownership has changed, but the current business name is China Chef 1. All of the items were cooked to order so there's no more bulk food production and having it sit under heat lamps. There were still around ten tables in the dining area, however the chairs had been upgraded to look nicer. The two-sided menu was now bilingual (English/Spanish) so I suspected that this place draws a significant number of Hispanic customers. Lunch specials were offered from 11 am to 3 pm. About a dozen selections were available that each came with a side of soup and rice. Appetizers and drinks were also listed on that page of the menu. The other page displayed the rest of the food offerings from the categories of chow mein, fried rice, beef, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and soup. All of the choices could be purchased as a party size. For my to-go order, I picked the Shrimp and Noodles from the Chow Mein section. The food came in a plastic takeout container with a solid number of good-sized shrimp. Since the noodles were thick and chewy, the stir fry was really lo mein as opposed to chow mein which uses thinner diameter noodles. The item was not overly salty, and I couldn't detect much MSG, if any was even applied. I gave a 3.5 star rating for my visit to China Chef 1.
