Stopped in for a lunch special to go. They range from $9.49 - $11.49. Good price point. Served with rice, a nice sized veggie egg roll that was crispy and fresh. A fortune cookie can be found with your order. It also comes with a cup of egg flower soup which I thoroughly enjoyed. Their egg flower tasted like it was made from scratch and these orders are made to order. I liked that and the variety of choices. I went with the orange chicken but I am coming back to try more. Cashew chicken, Kung Pao, Mushroom chicken, Szechuan garlic shrimp and house fried rice all look enticing. I like how their menu has both A la Carte prices and Party prices. My husband and I decided to check this place out past night for dinner. It was delicious. We got the lunch specials for a dollar more because it was dinner time( we were happy to pay the dollar). We got a huge meal. It came with soup, fried rice the entree and a spring roll. They are friendly and served us quickly. Ordered delivery so this will be just about the food. Sweet and sour chicken was good and so was the sizzling black pepper beef, the roast pork, and cream cheese wonton. Portion sizes were large too. They are the only place i found that does pork fried wontons but sadly they aren't very good. Small and very little filling and not much flavor. Also the salt and pepper chicken (not the wings) was flavorless. Was basically like chicken nuggets and the chicken was woody. We were looking for something to eat on Mother's Day and while everything else was packed this place had a table readily available. The woman who took our order was very patient as I tried to figure out what I wanted to order. The food was delicious and plentiful. unfortunately the drink fountain was down so no ice was available so we were served cold bottled drinks from the fridge. My mother and I were in El Cajon for the day and decided to try some Chinese Food for lunch. We looked at Yelp and decided to try China1968. It is a small restaurant however the service was very quick and polite. We both ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. It came with rice, an egg roll and soup. The Kung Pao Chicken is made with chicken (of course), water chestnuts, mushrooms, zucchini, onions and peanuts. Everything was very delicious. The only reason that we didn't give 5 stars was because it wasn't as spicy as we like. We would still go back and enjoy a meal there another time though. read more

Earlier this month, after driving past the place for years, my Beloved and I ate our first meal at China 1968. Better late than never. ************************* On the recommendation of my buddy Jay K., who is possessed of an encyclopedic knowledge of fried chicken and other stuff, I had the Salt & Pepper Fried Chicken Wings, which were flavorful and juicy, as Jay has reported, but whose crust I found unpleasant. Of all the foods in the fried food group, fried chicken is my favorite. When I take each first bite, I expect the thinnest coating permitted by the laws of physics, and I listen for a sound... the one made by shattered lacy tuiles or crickets crushed by kittens' paws. The sound is light and crinkling. It's "sshtiick," followed by a quiet, "uhsshh." For, you see, the coating is a wrapper that provides a slim snack of fried flour, but it mostly just holds in place small mouthfuls of juice for the tidy eater who breaks the surface, suctions out the liquid, then lightly chews what's left. The coating is not food and it's not the star of the show, and too much coating - too thick, too heavily seasoned, too goddamned loud - is an impertinence. China 1968's Salt & Pepper Fried Chicken Wings, their hardtack crusts barely yielding to my bite, produced a loud, rough "crrrounch!" that I did not enjoy. Also, I'm still trying to get used to garlic on fried chicken. So no, those aren't the wings I'm looking for. ************************* On the other hand: This summer, in Vancouver, at one of the City's Dinesty Restaurants, I savored a marvelous dish of fried chicken laced with fiery chilies and Sichuan peppercorns. As always, I dug the hell out of that ma la numbness and deeply herbal, pine forest-y taste, all painted around my mouth by succulent bites of juicy chicken, and I've craved the experience more since then. At China 1968, noticing a sautéed green bean dish on the menu, I asked if they would add chicken (they would, er, did...) and whether they had any Sichuan peppercorns, the answer to which was "no", then, "let me ask", then, "yes". Chef asked no questions. He knew what was expected, and what came next was delightful: it was essentially the same preparation I'd had in Vancouver, better, since it was served much nearer to my house. I reveled in chicken and green beans and ma la, happy with that great - if slightly salty - meal, and I felt rewarded for having made an off-the-wall request. ************************* I note that many Yelp users mistake chattiness and obsequious behavior for good service. They're wrong, and in fact, waiters that suck up and bow and scrape as they do their thing distract from the dining experience, and are thus bad waiters. Good waiters respect the customer, and themselves. I mention this because my server at China 1968, and her boss, and the kitchen staff, used fewer than twenty words to discern, then deliver, the meal I wanted, and were cheery along the way. This used to be our go to Chinese restaurant. Even though we had to drive quite a way to get to it. Today, I had a craving for their salt and pepper chicken wings. I was so disappointed. There was no spice to the chicken wings at all, and they were super greasy. The Kung pao chicken that I always get was also very bland. We ordered off of a menu we had at home. When we went to pick up our order it turned out all their prices were raised quite a bit. They were also much higher than the menus that they show online. Most items went up between an average of $5. This was very disappointing. It's time to find a new go-to Chinese restaurant. Won't be going back here again. Frankly, Panda Express was just as good for half as much. read more
