Found this place through the app EAT24. My gf and I were craving Chinese, but too lazy to drive. So we order delivery through here. They have awesome garlic pepper chicken wings, and BOMB Singapore noodles. And I finally made it to the restaurant itself and the customer service was great. Mostly regulars come here it seems. They knew most of their customers by name. We've also came in to grab a to go order and they gave us water, wonton chips and sweet and sour sauce while we waited. From the cute ancient chinese decorations, to the food and to the service- excellence across the board. We were seated immediately, ordered our meals with smoothies, and were served within under 20min. Which is really good considering there were quick a bit of other customers at the time. The little placemats had each zodiac sign so it was fun to sit there and talk to my friends about our signs. We were given wanton chips and a dipping sauce before the meal came out. I love how this location is across the street from the yogurt mill! Too bad I was too full to want dessert.... I enjoyed my veggies with shrimp with a pineapple smoothie and boba. The veggies were thoroughly cooked, just a little but of crunch like I like it. We were still given water in addition to our smoothies. Best Chinese I have found in San Diego. Good sized egg rolls. Not greasy. We got the kung poa chicken, crispy beef, and lo mein noodles.

Holy crap! My fiancé and I both got sick from eating China 1968. We ordered Moo Shi Pork, Crispy Beef, Fried Shrimp and Crispy Cream Cheese Wontons. The Fried Shrimp and Wontons were delicious and the Moo Shi Pork reportedly was good too. The Crispy Beef, however, was really bad. You could taste the corn starch--that crispy coating was just a gooey glob. The sauce had decent flavor but it wasn't anything special--I had to add a lot of soy sauce to make it edible but that may have been because of all the corn starch. Not sure what made us sick but I will not be ordering from this place again... read more

This was the most disgusting, overpriced, fast food Chinese food. I have to say that this may have even been the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. The egg rolls were soggy and seemed to have been nuked in the microwave; the lo mein noodles were overcooked, soggy and flavorless (it's inconceivable how someone can make lo mein noodles taste so awful); the kung pao was bland; the beef in the beef dishes was tough and chewy / those went in the trash. The orange chicken was this breaded mess with no sauce on it - just a thin sauce that was pooled at the bottom of the container - looks nothing like it should. I'm sorry but I don't believe the 5 star reviews are authentic. Be aware that the food you will receive looks nothing like the photos. This was barely edible - and that's being generous. China 1968 is our go-to for Chinese style food. Once we discovered it through Nextdoor mentions of best places to eat in La Mesa, there was no place else for us. It's definitely worth the trip for the authentic and consistent flavor and quality. Everything is prepared with generous vegetables, meats and delicious sauces. Always consistent, always on time, always fresh. They are doing curbside delivery and it's basically the same as going into the storefront only its at their front doors now. No table service at this time. Anyways, They're super nice and remember you from week to week with a friendly hello. We usually order the chicken corn soup, the pork potstickers, the special house lo-mein (has shrimp and pork), and the chicken with mixed vegetables (broccoli/carrots/sprouts.) So I had a craving for Chinese food and this place kept popping up on yelp and I decided to give it a try... I picked up my daughter and punch the address in the GPS and we were on our way. So the parking lot is shared with a laundry, el polo loco, a pizza place and some other stores... but we were able to find parking easily. We walk in and the set up is actually pretty cool, we went to the counter and grabbed a menu and had a few questions. The lady that help me was very direct lol... "China 1968" is a small family-owned Chinese strip mall place serving a menu littered with spurious "Cantonese" cuisine like magenta-hued spare ribs and sweet & sour chicken. Sporting a hideous linoleum floor that clashes with its blue-tinted walls, this restaurant got its name from opening in 1968 and not experiencing a remodel since. Upon arriving at a nearly empty restaurant on Saturday night at 7:30pm, I was admittedly alarmed and mused to myself that this "must be a lunch place," in a hopeless attempt to feel unreasonable optimism. I was, however, delighted to find that my initial impressions and prejudices were harsh and unwarranted. I discovered that this is primarily a take-out restaurant by the steady amount of people coming in and out to pick up food. The other table of people here consisted of a family speaking in Sinitic to each other, which was a positive sign. As for the "1968" -- I was told that the real reason for the name is that those are lucky Chinese numbers. There are two fried chicken varieties here: The Salt & Pepper Boneless Fried Chicken Breast, and the Salt & Pepper Fried Chicken Wings. Because I prefer fried chicken with bones in it, I ordered the Salt & Pepper Fried Chicken Wings (6 pieces for $7.68). They're made to order, so they took a little bit to come out. If you've read my reviews of other fried chicken adventures you know that "made-to-order" is a good thing, whereas "sitting under a heat lamp" is bad and bound to earn your fried chicken a failing grade. The substantially-sized chicken wings looked similar to other Asian offerings with their thin, hard batter made of flour, and starch of potato or corn or both. They smelled like heaven and were fried to a rich golden hue. I picked one up and its crunchy, crackly fried coating shattered as my teeth penetrated the crust, before a mini-explosion of liquid smeared warm chicken juices mixed with frying oil on my lips and tongue. I could taste chicken, salt, pepper, garlic, ginger, and hot pepper flakes. Great moisture, great crunchiness, great soft chicken meat, great spice blend. This was really greasy and I got a chicken chow mein and I had one piece of chicken and I asked for vegetables they put in one piece of broccoli and one carrot slice and the rest were noodles that had a very oily sauce on them. This is a great place to go if you're craving some Chinese comfort food and you really don't feel like venturing over to Convoy. Though the menu does have a lot of variety and appears pretty decent, there are some hits & misses. Here are a few dishes I would recommend (+), and a few I would stay away from (-). Every sit-down table gets complimentary fried wonton strips & a sweet/sour sauce which is nice. I also recommend ordered a pot of the Chinese black tea to go with your meal. Helps cut through the grease/oil and helps with digestion. They give you a lot of white rice with their dishes so you definitely will have enough. + Beef Chow Fun (Beef w/ thick noodle and bean sprouts) A classic Cantonese-style dish. YUM! Everything just hits the mark with this dish! It's not your standard Americanized chow mein. Totally different noodle dishes. If you've never tried it, you should. It's a good one. +Singaporean Fried Vermicelli (Curry noodle dish w/ shrimp, pork, teeny bit of egg) Again, not something you can get everywhere. Not a Panda dish. If you like yellow curry and a little bit of a kick, I think you'd like this! Give it a try! It's definitely drier than the chow fun, but not in a bad way. +Fried Chicken Wings The chicken skin is pretty flavorful and crispy, but the inside is a little bland, though the meat is moist and tender, so it was a win for me! +Spicy Beef Noodle Soup I like the white, round noodles and I thought the combo of beef and soup base worked well together. Tasty and hit the spot! However, there was a lot of beef tendon, which was kind of odd and unexpected. I wish it was just all beef brisket or something. -Hot & Sour Soup (Shanghai-style hot & sour soup w/ mushrooms, tofu, vinegar, pork) Consistency was too thick, had too much vinegar and the color was way too dark. Taste was ok. I would try a different soup. -Sizzling Beef (Hot sizzling hot plate w/ beef and assorted vegs) The sauce they poured on there was really thick and the hot plate was not very hot. The quality of beef was also pretty poor, so it just didn't go well together like it should. -Chicken Curry Again, really gloopy, the consistency was really off and overall, unappetizing. -House Fried Rice For some reason, this rice dish is made of Vietnamese style broken rice, and came out in clumps. It definitely was not cooked well. It came out looking ok (the color, ingredients, etc.) but when you tasted it, it tasted like white rice. So weird. It's a Sunday night at about 6pm when I pull into the parking lot. Almost all of the parking spaces are taken and I figure there must be a lot of people in the restaurant. I find a space and head into the restaurant.... surprise... surprise...I'm the only one. Everyone else is in the laundromat next door. I walk and and take a seat while taking in the surroundings. It's very clean, open, and perfectly styled for what it is ... a Chinese restaurant. Yelp said this was a Chinese buffet but looking around I'll be damned to find one. The waitress approaches, hands me a menu and asks for my drink selection. Get this - I can have a Pepsi from the fountain or a Coke in a can. I ask for a Dr Pepper on draft. "We have no draft here". Okay joke fell short so I ordered the Coke. After looking at the menu - no buffet - I ordered the BBQ Pork. I upsold myself to include the soup of the day (egg flower); egg roll & cream cheese wanton for an additional $3.00. I also had a side of steamed rice. Only two minutes after ordering I am served the egg flower soup. I rarely add salt to anything but this definitely needed something. If you like tofu than this is the soup for you...lots of it. As I'm waiting for my next course of food I count 8 people busily working in the kitchen. I think they must really do a brisk business but then I remember that I'm the only one here. After a while I do notice they also take delivery orders & carry out... never saw a reason for 8 people though. My egg roll and cream cheese wantons are brought to the table. I am advised to be very careful as they will be very hot. As I'm also brought my BBQ Pork & steamed rice I decide to hold off. The BBQ Pork fills an entire plate and is attractively presented. That's where the accolades end. The pork is pretty dry and over cooked. The coating is flavorful though. The steamed rice was well prepared. It was moist and not sticky. Rice is rarely prepared properly and they hit the mark. After finishing these I remembered the egg roll and fried cream cheese wanton. I slid the plate over and noticed a sheen of grease on the plate under the two items. The egg roll was freshly made and flavorful but the source of the grease. The wanton....well...was liquid cream cheese in a soggy shell. Part of that is on me for leaving it to cool down in the grease. The other lies with over cooking the cream cheese. The grease should have been hotter to fry the outside and sear the cheese inside. I had two cans of coke and that brought my meal to just under $21.00. read more
