This is a Buffet style restaurant. Food is generally pretty good. Service is the same.

I really wanted to like this place, but I really dont! The food there is either on the extreme salty side or extreme sweet side. I honestly never tasted sweet sauce green beans before, China star gave me the chance and I absolutely hated it. Every dish in there is an absolute joke. The sushi was gross, was not fresh AT ALL. I would say the ONLY thing that is edible would be the ice cream because they do not make it. The one star, it's for my server. Atleast he was nice and gave great service. I will not be coming back. I rather drive 20 minutes more to go to the hibachi buffet on i10 than to come here and eat this crap again. Disgusting. read more

The food was typical Chinese buffet. It was very packed when we went. There was a lot of empty dirty tables. Guess they don't have enough help? We put our names down on the list and they gave us a laminated paper card with a number on it. There is such a small space to wait, which is right in front of the door to come in. So you're basically in the way and you can't wait outside because you have to listen for your number. Annoying! I think they should get a better system or get those little buzzer things. I seen a lot of "managers" walking around, playing with the blinds and being what looked like micro managers. The employees seemed overwhelmed and our waitress took forever to bring our drinks. When she did the ice was pretty melted. Had to ask for a new cup because the cup seemed dirty as well. Asked for lots of ice and she over filled the cup with ice. Nice! As we were waiting in the front to pay, we saw another manager just sitting behind the front desk staring at everyone. No hi, thank you, someone will be right with you, nothing. Just sipping her coke staring at everyone. A waiter came to ring us up. I thought it was interesting how the lady who might be the owner was drinking a can coke. Makes ya think, since she has a whole fountain drink dispenser to drink from. Probably won't be back! read more

This is the worst place I have been to to eat!!! Bad service as the host asked what I wanted to drink and I told him twice and he still got it wrong. Worst Chinese buffet I have been too, and I have been to many consider my Asian heritage. The food selection is normal considering the size of the restaurant, taste of the food is less diserable. The reason I give 1 star is the place is NOT clean at all. My table was sticky, carpet was dirty. First plate I got off the rack had stuff on it like not being cleaned. Worst of all, I got sick and got an stomach ache, fever immediately after I eat there. I mean about 1 hr or 2 after I had lunch there, and I didn't eat anything in between. Oh my. Have they lowered the standards or has this place not been inspected. This place smells like old mop water and a old gym bag that has been sitting in the sun. I smelt mold once I got to the booth where we were seated. Plates are sticky, floor is sticky/filthy, booths are torn, ice cream machine is messy and barely working, and the food on ice looks like it has been out for days. The water under the foods to keep it warm smells spoiled. How do you mess that up? It is exactly 12:57pm so all of the foods should be fresh. My rice has burnt flakes in it. The best part about China Star is the variety of food. They have chicken, pizza, nuggets, fries, and ice cream for the kids. Crawfish, sushi rolls, and ribs for my husband. Numerous seafood choices for grandma. Salad and broccoli chicken for me. It is a buffet so the kids don't get restless. The waiters are always close at hand to refill drinks and water. I wanted to give a 3.5 because it's slightly better than average. That's not a knock on the place, just your normal run of the mill Chinese buffet is a 3. I give it an extra star because of the sushi and seafood but I take a half star away for charging me for my 2 year old $1.99 who literally ate one chicken nugget, 2 fries and an orange slice. The wait staff was nice and efficient. The food is pretty good for the most part. You are bound to fine something you love (mussels) and something you aren't a huge fan of (crawfish). Please Note: This review that I am writing is the same thing I mentioned to the manager: This was our first time at China Star in Pearland. We went on a Sunday, got there at opening time 11:00 am and when we walked in, we waited to be seated. Yes, there are several things to choose from the buffet, however; please be careful when you get a plate, because "SOME OF THE PLATES DIRTY" in other words NOT CLEAN! Also, I mentioned to our waitress that some of the FOOD not HOT - for food that should be hot and she said she would tell the manager, the waitress also went to the buffet and placed a small amount in a saucer to check and agreed it wasn't hot! So, if you prefer food on a steam table, to be working properly and it is not, you will not like that. When we checked out the manager asked how was everything? I answered as mentioned above and he just made excuses as if he was not concerned. We would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

I am updating my review because they have replaced all the managers again, and I have seen some minor improvements to the place. It is definitely cleaner, and they are not out of things as frequently. I especially like the new sushi items with the crunchy crumbles, as well as the unique items like tamales that pop up here or there. Certainly not worth the price if you don't care for sushi. Two stars at best. I am not a fan of buffets but I've been to a couple that are way better than this one. Most of the food is luke warm and have strange after tastes. The dining area was pretty clean. We went during lunch on a Saturday and there was no wait for a table. I won't be coming back here though. The food just isn't good. read more

The food was horrible and the service was even worse.All of the consistency of the food was dry and overcooked, the seafood was old and spongy.I tried crab legs and they were so old so when I pulled the meat out it was dark grayish or black Not really sure but I suppose it was starting to mold.I have never seen crabs so disgusting.Catfish nuggets were totally overcooked and dry Oh and did I mention the dirty plates and utensils.I had to go through the stack of plates to find a clean one and ultimately just used to go plastic ware On to the desert bar..One ice cream scooper in running nasty water so I essentially paid for food that I didn't eat.Total waste of money.Met others on the way out with the same complaints so I wouldn't recommend this place to a total stranger not even a homeless person.it's B rated but that's definitely misinformation Should be a F on all levels.The manager was listening as I and other unhappy guests were talking about the food and the experience but was still asking for our payment at the same time.Please don't waste your money ! Standard Chinese buffet with make-your-own-plate-for-staff-to-cook (their version of hibachi, not be confused with the version in Japanese steakhouses). Went around 8:30 PM on a Saturday night after they had been open a little over a week. Hubs and I were seated promptly, and told host we only wanted water, and headed to get food. Water was there when we returned. I made a "hibachi" plate. It had a slightly burnt taste (grill needed cleaning perhaps) but otherwise ok. I went for the crabs (fried and in soup), clams, mussels, seafood casserole, potsticker (dumpling) and sushi. Hubs got shrimp tom yum soup, salted shrimp, fish (I think swai and another kind) and green beans. Oysters on half-shell had run out -- make note to come earlier if you want that, and I believe it's only on weekends. Desserts are the standard trays out of the freezer (my cheesecake piece was still mostly frozen) plus fruits, pudding, cookies and half dozen varieties of ice cream (we didn't try). There were LOTS of staff working hard; I hope it continues this way. We'll probably bring the kids to lunch on a weekday on a school holiday, but they wouldn't eat enough to be worth the weekend price (same for kids & adults). read more

I have eaten in many Chinese restaurants over many years and this is the best of my Excellent rated. This restaurant is CLEAN. None of their many selections is greasy. They serve the best baked salmon and white fish. Their chefs look AND cook as professionals as well as their wait staff. Every selection I tried was tasty and textured well. Someone had told me that the food had gotten better and that it was a cleaner environment. On October 1, 2017 I dragged my boyfriend here because I really wanted to try it, the service is a lot better I can not remember my waitresses name but she was amazing and there was another waiter named Gyasi who was pretty nice as well. My boyfriend did not like the food and honestly he eats everything! The waitress noticed that he was not eating and suggested he tried one piece of everything just to be certain and he rejected the offer and said no thank you. I understand that it is a Buffett but if the food is nasty then someone shouldn't be charged for taking 3 bites. The manager was rude and told us that our waitress would have to pay for an uneaten meal. Today my wife and I and her two sisters came to eat here. Where to start. I'm not sure when they hired a the new server by the name Ian but I'm telling you that was the best service we have ever received. I know it's just a buffet but his over all attention to detail and ability to connect with us and the tables around us was superb. Warm and friendly and inviting. Making you feel as if you were welcomed and not just another face. We stayed for almost an hour and half and were just blown away with the overall experience. You can tell Ian takes a lot of pride in what he does and that he truly cares. The General manager even stopped by our table to welcome us in and see how everything was going, which gave us another chance to rave about him. The table next to us also told her the same the thing that they were under the impression he has been working for a long time but was a recent new employee and that he is very dedicated to what he does. The food was fresh and hot tasted wonderful this place had took a 360 from the last time we ate here which was about 5 months ago. Hats off to who ever turned or is turning this place around we will be back for Ian's service and the wonderful food. Thank you read more
