Writing this review as the quality of the food has gone down for a few items since the last time we visited There are still a few dishes, which have like good quality like their fried rice specials, pork dumplings and noodle dishes, like lo mein, etc. However, the spring roll was uneatable both the vegetarian and the shrimp one was not cooked properly Did not enjoy the Dan Dan noodles The bao buns were OK - could have been better Mapu tofu was good , chicken fried rice was good, the chicken and lettuce wraps was good Attaching a few pictures of the same

China chalet is a safe bet if you are looking for a good Chinese meal, and love authentic Sichuan flavors. Service is always prompt, and there is usually plenty of seating available. We love the Sichuan peppers and dry chicken entree, as well as most other dishes we tried were always pretty good - egg fried rice, string beans, mapo tofu etc. I'd definitely recommend

Hot tea and water on arrival. Love this!

This is my second visit here and again I was impressed. All of the dishes have great flavor and texture. Nothing is overly oily or too spicy. The flavors are balanced and the ingredients taste fresh. The portion sizes are generous. The staff is friendly and patiently awaiting your arrival. I really enjoy the more formal white table cloth setting with tea and oranges. China Chalet is always a pleasant experience.

Went to China Chalet on a Thursday around 12:30 for a business lunch. We had no problem getting seated right away. The staff were friendly and attentive. Overall, the restaurant was very quiet. We ordered off their lunch menu which was very reasonable. I got the wonton soup and chicken and broccoli with fried rice. Both were very good. I would definitely order them again. Very easy to get in and out on a lunch break. I will be back!

C1. Six Pieces Whole Peking Duck with Pancakes in action!

This restaurant is really a solid 3.5 for me. I was looking for Peking duck in the area and it seemed to be the only one that offered the crepe style (IYKYK) but it's not truly authentic duck preparation style more like the Cantonese roast duck vibes. But to be fair it was still delicious and the server prepares it right in front of you and gives you 6 whole wraps along with 2 duck legs. But don't expect this to be the authentic version you will find in Flushing. We weren't super hungry so we got a vegetable dish which was the stir fry bamboo shoots with wood ear, and my dad's favorite mapo tofu that had a good kick and lots of aromatics (but they call it Ma Bo tofu here) The service was friendly and what you would expect from an old school style Chinese restaurant with the white tablecloth, wait staff in black slacks, vest and white shirts and a fish tank in the front. It did look like they were takeout heavy and even have a kiosk you can order food from by the door! Overall we went home full and happy. Come check them out if you are craving some good Chinese food!

    Sliced chicken with tender asparagus

A step above your usual Chinese take out place. Definitely more authentic. We ordered a bunch of dishes and some were better than others. We came on a weekday afternoon and all the dishes came out super quick within 5 minutes. Suspect some items were already cooked and were just reheated. What was really good was the sliced chicken with tender asparagus and the beef chow fun. Everything else was very underwhelming. The crispy flounder with black bean sauce was disappointing. Tasted like your regular frozen fish sticks that you get from the supermarket sautéed in black bean sauce. The white rice and brown rice were very hard. Not sure what happened there. Overall this place is decent for the area but definitely need some improvements.

    Chicken w/garlic Sauce $12.60

I came for lunch to the China Chalet having read some positive reviews. The restaurant has numerous awards, all are displayed on the entrance walls. They pride themselves on their chinese asian cuisine, but I dine here specifically for their szechuan offerings. On this day I had their "Chicken w/ garlic sauce ($12.50 lunch special).. I also had the egg drop soup ($4.50) which was good but not exceptional. The chicken w/garlic sauce was superb and the entire dish was very tasty and well done. The food and prices are comparable to my favorite Chinese restaurant "Hunan Taste" in Denville where I have eaten many times. The food comes out quick, the service is efficient, the host is very friendly and the ambiance is semi-elevated. Management will accomodate alterations to your dish. Additionally, you can request your dish be chinese style. Having travelled extensively in China (Beijing to Hong Kong), I personally would not reccomend that. In China, Peking Duck is served boiled. If you arrive before 12pm you will avoid the crowds that follow. Parking is in a strip mall.

The food wasn't bad, actually quite tasty but I guess my taste buds are used to the more unhealthy, "fake" American Chinese food. Moreover, the server was nice but it was evident her English was a bit lacking so when I asked for a lychee martini, she kept pointing to martini but didn't know what I meant by lychee (so I went for a cosmo instead no biggie). The food came out pretty fast once ordered but any questions we had about the dishes were answered rather ambiguously and when we wanted some chili oil/more napkins we had to kind of hunt the server down. And it was weird because the restaurant really wasn't that busy on a Sunday afternoon. So, overall I still enjoyed my birthday (would've been nice to kinda get called on it especially since the server "checked" my ID but again maybe she didn't really look at it), and I don't think I'd rush to try this restaurant again. However, it's still worth at least a first try! The soup was my favorite dish, very herbal flavors. Heavy on lemongrass so if you're expecting something a bit less fragrant like pho or ramen you probably wouldn't like the soup here.

We walked into a space with a rustic and earthy design that felt warm and comfortable, the kind of room that stands out from the typical tourist-area restaurants nearby. The dining room had a relaxed, inviting energy with a layout that accommodated both small groups and larger parties, and the focus felt centered around the food rather than the spectacle of the neighborhood. The food is where Mountain House really stands out. We ordered a few dishes and found the Mapo tofu one of the highlights, with a deep, rich flavor and a balanced level of heat that made it feel more complex than many versions of the dish we have tried. The combination of spice, seasoning, and texture came together in a way that felt carefully composed. The Sichuan-style dishes also showcased the restaurant's strength with bold mala flavors, bringing the characteristic numbing spice without completely overwhelming the other elements of the dish. The fried rice was another standout, simple but executed well, with a comforting quality that made it a great balance alongside the more intense Sichuan dishes. The restaurant also offered a variety of dishes that worked well for sharing, including options like pork belly and seafood-based dishes, making it a good choice for groups who wanted to try multiple flavors instead of ordering individually. We appreciated the small touches that added to the overall experience, including the complimentary pickled vegetables and tea service, which helped make the meal feel more complete rather than just a series of dishes arriving at the table. Service during our visit was attentive, and the staff were helpful with navigating the menu and spice levels. They offered guidance on which dishes would work best for our group and adjusted the heat when we asked. The main thing to keep in mind is that Sichuan cuisine can vary significantly in spice level, and some dishes can be much hotter than expected. If you are not used to mala spice, asking for recommendations or adjusting the spice level is worth doing. The portions also make this a better option for sharing, especially if you want to try several dishes. Overall, Mountain House is a strong option for Sichuan food. The combination of bold flavors, comfortable atmosphere, and attentive service makes it a place worth returning to, especially if you enjoy spicy Chinese cuisine and want a restaurant that focuses on the flavors and techniques of Sichuan cooking rather than just convenience.
