Moved to Florham Park and tried the China Chalet. Ordered Shrimp and Broccoli, Wonton Soup and Vegetable Rolls. After 10 minutes, they served tea, had to ask for a glass of water and sweetener for the tea. The Vegetable Rolls, seem to be frozen and dumped in the deep fry, not very good. The Wonton Soup was watery, probably the worst Wonton Soup I have ever had. The Shrimp and Broccoli was fair at best. The service was fair to poor. The bill with tip was $36. From other reviews it appears this place is a True Chinese Restaurant, not the Chinese American Resturants I'm use to. Go at your own discretion, it's just not for me. read more

This is a typical old Sichuan style restaurant. The food is SALTY and super PRICEY, not sure why the restaurant can survive this long. The only reason I can think of is the location, there is not many Sichuan restaurant in the Livingston area, so there is no competition and they can price much more! As a long time customer, I've enjoyed a number of meals dine-in in the restaurant, with great waitstaff. I've always enjoyed good take out, again with very friendly folks at the front counter. A LOT. However, as a long time customer, when I went in today to bring an inedible item back for a refund, I was met with indignation and anger, instead of any pleasantness, by a different front of house person. I had ordered at 8:45pm or so the night before and even asked if the kitchen was still open, since they close at 9. I was told yes. Ordered some shrimp pineapple rolls, soup and sesame chicken. Was told abruptly "5 mins to pickup, we close at 9", hang up. Ok, so I jump in my car and drive the 3 mins to get it. The order was already sitting on the shelf. I asked, how can they cook chicken in 5 mins? He said "it's deep fried". I said "I wish I had known that, but ok, I'll take it." No choice. I got home, about 4 minutes later and began to eat. The sesame chicken was hard as a rock; maybe 6 small bites were edible. Everything else was inedible and the broccoli was raw. So I went back in this afternoon to talk with someone. After being told several times "sesame chicken always fried", I explained that I understand that but it was inedible, period, forget the frying. I explained why. More arguing. Then I was told next time order chicken and broccoli. I said of course I'll order differently next time. Then she said, no next time I'll give you a chicken and broccoli. I said I would just like my money back. That's when everyone acted like they didn't understand me anymore. I asked for the owner. Told owner isn't here today. Then someone standing by looking annoyed went and got one of the other staff and he came over and they began conversing in another language. Then he walked away and the annoyed looking man pulled out a huge wad of bills and peeled off a $20 and walked towards the front desk lady, all the while speaking angrily in another language and gesturing at me. I asked if he was the owner or boss. More angry talk and gesturing. I finally left before I lost my temper and said I won't be back. I didn't take his $20. I won't be back and it's regretful, because most of the time the food is good and the people super friendly when I go there. But this was just rude, poor treatment of a good customer. And I refuse to give my $ to a business like that. I wasn't looking to shake someone down for a free meal. It was legitimately awful and I was asking for a refund of that specific item. It's also a disturbing shift in customer service. Don't assume people will be back and this offer to "make something right the next time". WE FOUND HAIR IN ALL THE FOOD!!! BEWARE! BE READY FOR A HAIRY EXPERIENCE This is the WORST experience I've ever had in any restaurant in my life. My three friends and I decided to order this food as take out and it was a terrible idea. While we were at home eating it the four of us found HAIR in our food! At first, I thought I was going to let it slide when I saw the hair in my food but then my friends told me they had hair in their food too. It was truly disgusting. So I decided to call the place and ask for an explanation. They told me to go back in and so we did. The person there was probably the rudest person I've ever encountered in the food industry. He kept denying what happened even though the hair was there. He was mean and disrespectful. He whipped out his iPad mini and took a video of us while we explained what happened until I asked for him to stop. Highly unprofessional. Not only that but he was yelling at us and said we were just "teenagers" when first of all we are all in our mid-twenties and second of all it would not have mattered. Then a lady came and told him to just give us a refund for the overly expensive sesame chicken, orange chicken, and pork. He did not want to do this but when he did he threw our credits cards around and was just overall rude to our crew. He kept laughing at our faces saying how this is impossible. I'm shocked this place only has 4 stars. Shocked. It deserves at least 4.9999 stars for being the best Sichuan restaurant in the state. My family hails from Sichuan so our standards for home cookin' are snobbishly high. I don't even think any place in Manhattan or Flushing could oust China Chalet for its quality, authenticity and consistency. The chef-owner also hails from Sichuan and will sometimes stop by our table to talk to my parents in the local dialect. Trust me, he knows what he's doing in the kitchen, and the food speaks for itself. I moved out of state, but every time I come home, I have to come here and order the following staples: ---Fish in a Pond (I think that's what it's called in English--see Chef's Specialties near the last page) ---Mapo Tofu ---Dan Dan Noodles ---Sichaun Fried Rice ---Duck Recently, I discovered Sichuan-style hot peppers, which wasn't on the menu but because they know Sichuan food, they were able to whip it up exactly like it's done in the old country. Spicy. Dangerous. Delicious. Lastly, I must mention that this is NOT your hole-in-the-wall Chinese fast food. This place has class. The setting does justice to the quality of the cuisine. Read about this place last year in the NY Times and decided to give it a try. I am in love, and have been back at least a dozen times since. The lady at the front desk is always so nice and welcoming, and was even before I became a regular. The waiters, although not exactly fluent in English, always get the order right and are friendly and fast. But, oh, the food! I hadn't had a truly good Chinese meal in NJ for many years, so imagine my surprise when every single dish we ordered was phenomenally good. My favorite appetizers thus far are: Steamed pork dumplings in chili oil Crabmeat balls with spinach Noodles with diced pork and chili sauce Hot & sour soup (one of the best I have had) Dan-dan noodles Honey spare ribs The favorite entrees: Heavenly chicken (an addiction - ask to save the chili oil from the pork dumplings and pour it over this dish - mmmm) Szechuan lamb Braised beef with chili and cabbage (my absolute favorite here) Four gigantic prawns with pork and chili paste Even the tea is good. Definitely a few good dishes here. The pan fried noodles were decent. The scallion pancakes were really yummy (crispy from being fried in tons of oil). They had these dumplings in a sweet chili sauce - not bad, but they were somewhat lacking in flavor. I didn't try the Ma Pao Tofu, but I hear it was quite good. The MEH dish... which just happened to be the one I chose... was the beef with chinese bamboo shoots and mushrooms - sounded somewhat authentic, yes? Yeah... the meat was chewy and the sauce was uninspired while the bamboo and mushrooms were just OK. I love this place and have been going here occasionally over the last seven years or so. They specialize in Szechuan cuisine (which is the spicy stuff). For the spicy lovers, the three chili chicken is amazing - it's a dry dish - three types of chili will have your mouth blazing but whatever they do to flavor this dish is great. I've tried it elsewhere and could not compare to this. Also, the beef with cabbage in spicy oil is delicious. I also think they do a good job with dumplings, and I'm not sure whether mushu (pork) is an authentic dish in China or not, but they make it very well here. In general, dishes tend not to be overly oily, or overly battered, so I walk away feeling a little more healthy than at some more Americanized Chinese restaurants which have very (heavy) oily and salty food. read more

After reading some of these reviews, "this is the REAL deal" probably sounds like a broken record... But the truth is the truth. China chalet is the restaurant of choice for my picky Chinese family, far surpassing all the rest we've ever tried. When my cousin from Chengdu comes to visit, (Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan aka Szechuan) she asks to be take here to get their fei teng yu (chilli fish pond). My favorites are the chilli fish pond (perfect amount and blend of spices, that's better than crack) and the three chilli chicken - crispy garlicky and spicy. If you like American-Chinese food, this honestly isn't it. All the less than average reviews seem to come from seekers of Americanized Chinese "cuisine," which is ok, because if you're looking for the tongue numbing spiciness that your authentic Sichuan food provides, then my dear, you're in for a SERIOUS treat!! read more

As usual, we ordered water fish, stir fry pea shoots, and some small buns (xiao long bao). - Three dishes we always order when trying out different sichuan restaurants for the first time. The vegi was fresh and refreshing. Water fish (fish in chilly oil) was the most authentic you could get. Only wish that they put a little more fish in there. But the flavor. mmmhmmm... The small buns though is "sichuan" style - mixed vegi and pork filling, dry. So if you are looking for Shanghai soup dumplings, this is not the correct type you want. My review is based on one dish but it was disappointing. I ordered Singapore Mei Fun which is rice noodles seasoned with hot pepper and curry along with a selection of meats and seafood. Hands down the best Szechuan food known to man. Their five-spiced beef appetizer and 'La Zi Ji Ding' (spicy chicken) are the best I have had, and their Jumbo Coconut Shrimp is unique and always a table favorite. My Dad loves their razor clam appetizer. The 2-star rating is due to their staff, who have the worst personality and most ulterior motive I have ever encountered at a restaurant. The waiters ALL give off a bad vibe and expect a 15% tip minimum for their disparaging service. I get a look of discontempt from the staff when I go to Kings next-door to buy milk after ordering my food, and they tell me not to go. Last time I left a 11% tip and the waiter chased me out, complained, and basically forced me to give him more tip money. My father is a generous tipper, but even then the waiters are not satisfied- the last time we dined there together the waiter charged an 18% gratuity without writing it on the check. My Dad, the nice guy, paid a 20% tip on the gratuity-inflated total- we only realized after leaving as the prices didn't add up. The waiters take advantage of my Dad, and also always pushed him to order their overpriced, expiring seafood as they knew they could. I also see management has paid Yelp to have a certain 5-star review advertised. Not surprised. My family has spent so much money here in the past, it's appalling really. Over the years, China Chalet's price:quantity ratio has risen faster than China's stock market, while their portions have shrunk more than my aging grandmother. It's become so extreme I would recommend Kam Man over Tianfu for cold sliced beef. In conclusion, sleezy waiters and management, but good food. A guest would surely be impressed by the food, but the waiters create a bad dining atmosphere and experience. Be cognizant of getting ripped off. Don't take any recommendations here, and always ask if gratuity was charged if you have a party of more than four people. China Chalet gets 5 stars for the chef and negative 1 star for the waiters. Do not order the American-Chinese standard dishes that you can get any other hole in the wall or americanized restaurants like Mr. Chu's. We had the dumplings in spicy chili sauce, peking duck, Asian squash with tofu, sauteed string beans, and the chli fish pond. All were very good. Surprisingly the peking duck was decent. I am very picky about Asian food, esp in NJ and I would actually order this again. Had the classic dan dan noodle and wonton in spicy oil, both were overly sweet and lacking a savory balance. 1 of 2 authentic Chinese restaurants we dine at on a regular basis (the other is A and J in East Hanover). China Chalet is known for it's spicy Sichuan style food. If you haven't experienced it, it's a "numbing" type of spiciness so much different than what would normally be considered spicy. The best way to gauge the authenticity of a Chinese restaurant is by how many Chinese people are in it and this place is always packed. I recommend the spicy beef tendon and tripe. Pronounced "fu qi fei pian" and "ma la niu jing". They are both appetizers but the two best hands down. Wu Liang Ye in NYC is a very popular Sichuan spot too but the quality of the food has gone down hill in the last few years so China Chalet wins. read more

We were curious to try a new Chinese restaurant in the area and decided to go to China Chalet. We used to eat at the Pancake House that was the previous occupant and it still has some of the same feel. The staff was overly attentive; I think they filled my water glass like 6 times, which, was good since my dish was quite spicy. The appetizers were tasty and hot and were served in reasonable amount of time from when we ordered. The Pau-pau platter was fun for the kids (they hadn't seen one in long time) and a good amount of food for 2 (or even 4) people. The main dishes were presented nicely and were flavorful. I ordered the mabo tofu with shredded beef. The only disappointment was the veggie lo mein my wife ordered; 90% lo mein, 10% veggies, And the vegetables were only a couple of baby carrots and a bunch of scallions. One would expect broccoli, water chestnuts, mushrooms, etc. The ambiance of the place was a bit too quiet; they could use some more music and maybe some candles on the table (lower lights).
