I went to China Chalet since it was well recommended. Unfortunately, the meal did not start well. The vegetable rolls were the worst I've every had. The chicken with broccoli was bland and the mu shu pork was not much better. Even the rice was blander than usual. The only really good part of the meal was the sweet and sour chicken which was excellence. In fact, I would've given a even lower rating if it wasn't for the sweet-and-sour chicken. The staff was friendly, and the food came out quickly. But since three of the four things I had were mediocre, I don't plan on returning. read more

My parents like the szechuan food (too spicy for me). I always get the shanghai style fat noodles and it's yummy!

Spring rolls were just ok for me. Pork fried dumplings were a little creepy (meat and ginger combo - consistency issue for me) The chicken and asparagus was good. I may have to go back and try again just to see if I went on an off night......however, the fact that the spring rolls and dumplings weren't great I don't have that much faith in the entrees! Came back for another try.... still only three stars. To much sugar in the sauces and to much sauce (drowning the meal) I won't be going back. We have been eating at this restaurant for a few years now. The food here is authentic and the menu provides something for everyone. My family enjoys eating healthy and China Chalet has variety for everyone. Our go-to's are the vegetable fried rice, the chicken noodle soup, vegetable steamed dumplings, and their mixed vegetables platter. We also like their chicken with broccoli and their sweet and sour chicken. The two things that they do not provide and hopefully one day do so are egg rolls and steamed chicken dumplings. Other than that, everything we have ordered has been delicious. The staff is friendly and attentive. Whether dining in or ordering out, our experiences have all been positive. Order: 3 Pepper chicken Appetizer- I personally didn't like it & found the chicken to be hard & the red pepper to be too spicy & hard to digest. So disappointed! Friends recommended that this is a great place for take-out. We tried it tonight, and quite frankly the food was AWFUL. I feel like I got ripped off! The steamed dumplings were very doughy, dried out and flavorless! The hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour! The Kung Pow chicken was flavorless, with tiny pieces of chicken, and the hot sauce I asked for was absolutely devoid of flavor or spice. Followed by the Shrimp, Pork and Chicken Lo Mein. Once again a melange of flavorless goopy starchy crap! Oh, the watercress was the one good dish from this forgettable, overpriced, underspiced avoidable restaurant. That China Chalet has low reviews only speaks to the poor appreciation of good Chinese food amongst most Americans. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in New Jersey. There is no need for a complicated review...If you like Szechuan, this the bomb. read more

Excellent excellent place, this place has lived up to the Yelp hype in my opinion. Or that I'm just a fan of Szechuan food and easy to please haha. It's located in a pretty bustling shopping center with plenty of parking. The restaurant wasn't very hard to find and it is pretty big, bigger than I thought so could seat decent amount of people. Of the 4 dishes we've ordered I actually liked the string beans 干煸四季豆 the most even though that's not really a spicy dish. But the flavor of it tastes just right and the texture felt right. The other favorite of was the Dan Dan noodles 担担面. I was expecting it to be pretty spicy but it turned out not at all. But the chili oil really give it a nice flavor and fragrance that I haven't seen in other Szechuan restaurants yet. The Braised Beef with Napa Cabbage 水煮牛 was pretty good as well but I think here I should've gone with the fish as traditional was done. Next time definitely going more for their seafood options. Lastly the Crab meat Spinach 蟹肉菠菜 was a relatively light flavored dish compare to the other three. It was nice to cleanse the palette with something lighter and as well as getting the veggie requirements. Very satisfied with the meal and service was good, we didn't have to wait for orders to be taken or water and tea to be refilled. I had an excellent time here and only lament that its not closer to the city. This place is definitely worth a trek out, there's even a Trader Joes across the street so that could be a nice lunch/dinner stop for grocery runs :-) read more

If you prefer everything that goes into your mouth to be doused in chili oil, you should come here. China Chalet is undoubtedly authentic Szechuan cuisine, almost something that you would find in New York's Chinatown. Let it be known from here on out that this is a RARE restaurant to find in New Jersey (especially this part of NJ), and if you're into Szechuan food then you may have found your new favorite restaurant. If you're not accustomed to seeing an 8-page menu at a Chinese restaurant, or would prefer Sesame Chicken over Oxtail and Tripe, Conch Meat, or Szechuan Lamb.....well, you should probably look elsewhere. But for those of us who do indulge in Szechuan cuisine it is a great place. Things are pretty much universally good here (except for one appetizer "Angel Hair Beef" which had so much chili oil swimming with it I couldn't eat more than two bites) and the service is quite fast. Ironically, although I made the joke about Sesame Chicken - the "Americanized" Chinese dishes offered here are actually better than any take-out Chinese in the area and if you require some comfort food with your exotic Szechuan food, I say go for it. Both the General Tso's and the Orange Beef here are phenomenal. I come here so often that the waiters know me and have started recommending "secret" dishes that come out of the kitchen once and a while. The last one they recommend I try was sautéed beef tendons. Don't be fooled by the cheesey name. It is very authentic Szcheuan cuisine. My husband and I walked in and the place was packed. We only waited for about 5 minutes though. We had the dumpling in spicy oil for an appetizer. That was the most disappointing part of the meal, so I had to take off a star. The meat was too finely ground, too lean and no flavor. The oil was tasty, so it made it edible. We next had the shredded chicken with pickled vegetable noodle soup. The bowl was huge. It easily could have served four. Nice tender pieces of shredded chicken, good amount of pickled vegetable, and perfectly cooked noodles in a flavorful broth. Nice balance between spicy and sour. For the entree, we shared the beef with napa cabbage in spicy oil. Delicious, tender pieces of beef, spicy sauce with enoki mushrooms, napa cabbage and celery. We will be back after we recover from all the spicy hotness. read more

Went here last Friday for dinner. Service was good except we had tons of leftovers to eat the next day and the servers said they would pack it all up. I specified I wanted everything. When we got back, we saw that they had not packed up SO much of our fried rice and the leftover green beans! It was so sad because I was looking forward to eating it! We ordered the house fried rice, green beans, mapo tofu and sesame chicken. Also had pork dumplings and hot and sour soup to start. All were really good! Although eating at the restaurant is generally so much better, especially with the three chili chicken and fish pond that we invariably order almost every single time. We always like authentic Chinese food and this is one of those places that has several of the dishes we had when visiting Chengdu. 3 pepper chicken is simple awesome. So is 3 pepper shrimp. Excellent Chinese food. Probably the best in the area. The food comes out extremely quick during lunch service. They seat you quickly and can bang out your lunch in 30 minutes or less. I normally get the chicken broccoli lunch special which is served with a white rice that had vegetables in it. The chicken and broccoli comes out perfectly, couldn't ask for it better. Lunch specials are normally served with soup. I get the wonton soup. The wontons are not shaped the way you normally see from a Chinese restaurant. Standout dishes include the 3 pepper sichuan chicken and Mao Pao tofu. if you go there, i highly recommend focusing on the Sichuan dishes and ask the waiter "what's fresh" or "what's good". if you go there and get chicken with Brocoli, you will find it run of the mill. I travel to china frequently and some of their items are as close to the real deal as you will find in the US. I was really craving some Sichuan food and as always turned to Yelp for some good recommendations in the area. Stopped by to order a few dishes for carryout and thoroughly enjoyed what I had! I've only been exposed to sichuan food for a few years and often indulge in lunch spots in NYC. I'd say this restaurant has dishes comparable to ones served in Cafe China or Szechuan Gourmet in Midtown. Very impressed to have a great spot in Morris County! For my first time visiting, I had to stick to the classics: 3-pepper chicken, Dan Dan noodles, and spicy pork dumplings. The sauces really know how to make a first impression with its spicy, oily, flavorful, sweetness- so bad for you, which is exactly what makes it sooo good. Came back with friends so was able to order a bit more varieties. Dumpling in chili oil - ORDER. It's not that spicy and even if it is, for $4, you should try or you are missing out. Peking duck - actually pretty good though it was fried instead of baked. They don't offer the duck soup which was a little disappointing for me but didn't bother my table mates. They carved and cut the duck inside so don't expect a show by your table side. The waiter will come and wrap them for you. Only with green onions, no cucumber - another minus for me. Nevertheless, satisfied my cravings. The fish in chili pond - see my pic. Basically it is fish and veggies inside a red oil broth - a very popular Szechuan dish. They made it pretty well here. Not as peppery as ones I had in the past which I actually prefer since you can actually taste the fish and veg. String beans - very good. They put pickled veg on top and it was really good. Yum! My family and I headed here because my sister had a craving for xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and I saw on yelp that this place had them. Well, they don't! Maybe it's just for dim sum but it's definitely not on their regular menu. We were also hoping to get razor clams but they didn't have any. We asked if it was because they were seasonal; our server told us that last year they'd had it year-round but for some reason, this year, they were just not as readily available. However, we stayed and ordered the Szechuan pork dumplings, which were pork dumplings (duh) that were basically drowning in a spicy and sweet oil. They were v. good, despite being a bit greasy. We also had the eggplant with garlic sauce and the ma-bo tofu. Both were delicious. Of course, our family loves eggplant and tofu so there was v. little chance we'd be disappointed in either dish. The eggplant was cooked until tender, but not overly mushy, and the garlicy, soy saucy, slightly spicy sauce was really good. We asked for the tofu to be a bit spicier than normal and it was awesome. I'm used to ma-bo tofu being made with firm tofu but China Chalet uses a soft tofu, which was still cut into cubes, and it was really silken and smooth and delicious. There were a ton of waiters just standing around, almost hovering, which I found amusing, not overbearing. Service was helpful and friendly and our waiter was really nice. read more

Sichuan food in NJ? Actually pretty good. Sea bass was excellent although it could have had little more spice. Beef was very tasty and not overcooked as in most Chinese restaurants. We had lots of vegetables: eggplant, lettuce stems, shanghai bok choy ... all were very good. The only failure were the spicy dumplings. The dumplings actually were good, but the sauce was too sweet and not at all spicy. Kind of too Americanized. Finally, they don't serve liquor. Make sure to go to Trader Joe's next door first. I stumbled across China Chalet after concluding a business meeting at the Starbucks located next door in the shopping center. A newspaper article about the chef indicated that China Chalet was a place that takes food seriously. I tried the Kung Pao chicken on the lunch menu (they call it Kung Bao I believe). The entree was outstanding with a more complex sauce and presentation than the typical Kung Pao chicken. It had just the right amount of 'heat' in terms of spice. The egg drop soup was served too hot and was mostly broth, with minimal egg and corn. The service was friendly, efficient and on-point. My one recommendation to management would be to build a second bathroom. Currently there is a single large bathroom available for both men and women. As such, you need to lock the door. In my case, I had to wait in the hallway for 10 minutes as an employee was taking his sweet old time in there. read more

The worst! A family member wanted to have some Chinese for lunch. I wanted to do something different than our old standby ' but far superior to this place - Hunan Wok (luckily within walking distance). So we decided to give this place a try. From the moment we sat down it started out with horrible lukewarm tea, then we were told you don't get any of the crispy wontons that all Chinese places put out for you to snack on as you're looking at the menu until AFTER we ordered, and then we find out it's not even the crispy wontons but peanuts! Peanuts? What Chinese restaurant puts out peanuts? Then the last thing was that they had no lunch specials. All Chinese restaurants have lunch specials. Clearly they don't care about competing with other restaurants. They lost our business. We went (literally) around the corner to Hunan Wok. read more

I have read the reviews here and identified the main problem with the rating... The people that ordered american chinese food is disappointed, and the people that ordered authentic chinese food is satisfied. I only ordered authentic sichuanese food and it was good. It is good especially considering the location. So pro-tip, come here for the authentic chinese food. If you are going to order take-out type chinese food, don't expect much (note: people in Asia really don't eat those dishes lol). The ox tongue and tripe is good and braised beef & napa cabbage is good. There was a guy here that complains about the "Sliced Poached Tender Beef with 5 spices" and that is all fat and veins... that is actually the usual way chinese people eat. Very disappointed in two simple (and flavorless) dishes. First, shrimp with lobster sauce: the "sauce" was egg drop soup. Had none of the flavor of traditional lobster sauce. For $25, I expected so much more. Second, sesame chicken: no sauce, overdone and dry chicken, and none of the sweetness that should have been there. At $15, outrageous. We always liked this place before the lockdown and we were glad to see it opened for take-out. We've ordered take-out a number of times and everything was just as good as before. I had never ordered any seafood from them except shrimp so we decided to try the bronzini. Excellent! Tasty sauce, not bony and tender. The flounder dishes are stand-outs too. Crispy flounder filet especially and it stood up to the drive home without getting soggy. Also great is the orange beef. For an appetizer I like the Chinese cabbage in Spicy & Sour Sauce. You can order a combo plate of three or four appetizers if you can't decide. This place is way better than the strip mall take-out places and I think it has a real chef, not just cooks.
