We got take-out from this place yesterday. It was really bad. The vegetable rolls and Shanghai rolls were very greasy and tough to bite into- we couldn't eat them. Fried rice was white rice with a few rubbery pieces of beef and a random green pea- no soy sauce, no taste. General Tso Tofu was a lump of tofu stuck together with raw broccoli underneath. Sesame chicken was served in the same glued-together format- one big lump of chicken. They must use a lot of corn starch and all the dishes congeal and clump together. Even the lo mein was oddly tasteless. The food was very expensive for take out and definitely not worth it. Food was bordering on the inedible. Obviously not going back. There must be a better option- I'll keep trying new places til I find some descent Chinese food but skip this one. read more

This visit was absolutely my last at this place. I ordered the Hunan Chicken and baby shrimp lunch special for $10.95 to go. (That's expensive for lunch specials around here, but it would have been worth the price for good quality.) When I got it home 10 minutes later it was still hot. Sadly, that was the ONLY GOOD THING about this food. Not only was there absolutely no spice or heat (even though it is designated as spicy on the menu and it has been spicy when I ordered it in the past), but it was beyond BLAND. At one time, I worked in the area, and every couple of months after that gig ended, I'd come back to have lunch with one of my former co-workers (now friend). He'd come from Newark, I'd drive in from Basking Ridge, and Florham Park represented (in our minds, at least) a half-way point. We'd break bread, catch up on what was happening in our lives, compare likes and dislikes (he's a bigger fan of Charlie Parker than I am, although I respect Parker enormously; he can't understand my attachment to the Ramones and the Stooges, but isn't necessarily disdainful of it), contemplate past loves and potential future ones (he still bugs me to "hook him up" on a date with a young woman I was friendly with but who was, and is, happily married, and has kids; he updates me on a young lady I liked, went out with a few times, and who later became a prison guard, and was recently arrested for allegedly beating a prisoner along with several other guards...so much for the future of that potential "romance"), discuss politics (he gets agitated, being a black man from Newark, when I bring up the "angry white guy syndrome," saying, "Eddie, what are you white people so angry about? You think your average angry white guy has more to be angry about than the average black guy...or gal...from anywhere , anyplace, in America? Let him try to raise kids in Newark if he wants something to be angry about!!" Usually when we met in the past, we ate at a "natural" Mediterranean themed restaurant (the name escapes me; I didn't mind eating there occasionally, but I wasn't a big fan overall) next to the Kings. When we met last week, that restaurant...which had been at that location for a long, long time...was gone. A casualty of Covid, I guess. We decided to try China Chalet (although Nonna's is across the street, and I like them, he wasn't in the mood for Italian). The restaurant is impressively roomy, and masks were required. We were led to a corner table. Prices are pretty steep, and we ordered from the "lunch special" menu. I ordered a "noodle with chicken" soup. My friend ordered egg drop soup and a side dish (what is was escapes me now). The waiter brought a pot of tea and 2 glasses. Which is what I remembered from sit-down Chinese restaurants (it's been a long, long time since I was in a sit-down Chinese restaurant). We weren't brought water, or asked if we wanted anything else to drink, which surprised me a little. Maybe they're cutting back because of the Covid crises, but...water? A glass of water? We also weren't brought those crisp noodles they usually serve with soup, along with the accompanying duck sauce. No noodles for the soup, no duck sauce. The dish I had was large, and filling. It didn't have a great deal of taste, but since I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy (not really), I figured maybe it was because it was more "naturally" prepared. No artificial ingredients or flavorings. Maybe. Or maybe it just didn't have a great deal of taste...period. I mentioned to the waiter that I was interested in dessert. There was a dish listed that consisted of 2 small cakes with a red paste (can't remember now what it was actually called). I asked about it, but the waiter didn't encourage me to order it, saying something along the lines of, "I don't think you want it," or "It isn't for you." Ok, whatever. I settled for a dish of vanilla ice cream. Nice, but I could have gotten that at the supermarket. We were presented with the check, and 2 fortune cookies. They weren't rushing us out of there (the place was pretty empty, so what would have been the point?), but we decided to move our conversation to the sidewalk outside. Beautiful day, the meal didn't leave us hungry, and we had a nice, long conversation on the sidewalk outside. I asked my friend, "What did you think?" He shrugged. I guess that's my reaction too. I like this restaurant - the place is clean and the service is extremely friendly! The food is consistently tasty however none of it is spicy. I love Szechuan food because I like being challenged by the spiciness... The flavors here are good, but there is not even the slightest kick. I really enjoy their dumplings in the roasted red oil and their seafood is quite fresh and plentiful. This is definitely a higher end Chinese restaurant with extremely attentive service. For the average Chinese food place, the prices were a little high. The wonton soup was ok. Two small wontons and a broth without much flavor and NO hard noodles (even when we asked). That's a big pet peeve for me. I also got the chicken and shrimp luncheon special. The portion was on the smaller side but there was ample white rice. The Chinese Cabbage in Sweet and Spicy Sauce was very tasty and would have gotten 5 stars if not for the oil ... so much so that it left an oil slick on my lips. The vegetable chow fun would get, at best, one star, as it was tasteless and looked awful (remember, we eat with our eyes first). Service was quick. My disappointment aside, I'd try them once more, as I had 2 good experiences prior to and at the beginning of the pandemic. What Chinese restaurant doesn't have a noodle with duck sauce? Noodles usually served as an appetizer and had to pay for hot tea also, which usually complimentary. Now comes the entree. I had a kung pao shrimp which was not too bad, but the fried rice was actually steamed white rice with boiled pork strips (nasty way to serve and eat) and it was sour. A few peas and scrambled egg pieces made this a side dish one to send back. One bite was enough. They took it off the bill. Wait staff was ok and place looked clean, but that is not enough to come back for a 2nd try. I had been here a couple of times in the past year and prior to that about 5 years ago. We ordered takeout. On my return: Turn off #1 - the guy answering the phone was rushing me off the phone and was flat out rude! Didnt ask me my name and basically hung up on me when I completed my order. We drove over 35 minutes to have China Chalet this month and they did not disappoint! We started with the pork buns and hot and sour soup. I would reccomend the buns but found the soup to be average. The Peking duck is incredible - the perfect balance of richness, freshness, and flavor. We also had the three pepper chicken (holy moly this was delicious!!) and the dan dan noodles. The noodles were yummy and so complex. We also got the shrimp fried rice and it was the perfect way to round out the meal. I would honestly try anything on this menu because based on our recent order, I'd trust that everything is delicious. We went to the China Chalet twice in two weeks... both during lunchtime but had two very different experiences.. Our first lunch was our first experience at China Chalet and ordered what we normally order. Our experience was ok. We ordered the Scallion Pancakes, Chicken Lo Mein, and General Taos Chicken. The lunch special comes with soup- we chose Hot and Sour which was flavorful and very good which was promising. We found the Lo Mein to be average. Nothing spectacular, just good. The General Taos Chicken was ok. The chicken wasn't crispy and was soggy with the sauce. Honestly, we were disappointed given he strong reviews we have heard. Our second lunch was a very good experience. We went with several ladies who frequent this restaurant and KNEW the menu and best dishes. I loved the following dishes - Three Pepper Chicken, Peacock Razor clams, and Eggplant with Garlic Sauce.. amazing must order dishes!!! We will definitely need to return with the family and try again. With one good visit and one okay visit, I wish I could give 3.5 stars but I can only give 3 and would need another experience to tip the review one way or the other. So I'll admit my Braised Beef & Napa Cabbage in Chili Oil Sauce doesn't look like much. In fact when I first opened it I was worried. My mind raced to, it's it's already 8:30 PM and if I can eat this room service would surely be another 45 minutes away. This is a Chinese Restaruant with some American Chinese dishes. Authentic Chinese Restaurants don't serve crispy noodles for the table. They serve peanuts. You don't go here for the egg drop soup, egg rolls, crab rangoon or chicken n broccoli. You go here for the authentic Chinese food. My family and I had the winter squash (towel gourd - only old school Chinese people know) and crispy flounder with black pepper sauce and it was really tasty, fresh and high quality. The staff were super welcoming and friendly. So glad I can get authentic Chinese food in the area. That all changed the other night when we decided it was finally time. So we ordered the Heavenly Chicken and the Szechuan Shredded beef with peppers. The shredded beef was indeed spicy so be warned but the flavor was outstanding and it could easily be enough for two people. Heavenly chicken was OUTSTANDING. She stated that it wasn't a cafe and needed the table. We had not even been there for 10 minutes. She kept talking to us in an incredibly disgusting and mean way. I went to China Chalet since it was well recommended. Unfortunately, the meal did not start well. The vegetable rolls were the worst I've every had. The chicken with broccoli was bland and the mu shu pork was not much better. Even the rice was blander than usual. The only really good part of the meal was the sweet and sour chicken which was excellence. In fact, I would've given a even lower rating if it wasn't for the sweet-and-sour chicken. China Chalet is pure gold. It is my favorite Chinese restaurant in New Jersey. The placed is typically packed and filled with people seeking great Chinese food. The waiters are awesome here and really hustle. I've been coming here for at least 16 years. The food is awesome and they will provide the level of heat you desire. Some of my favorite dishes are the: scallops in black pepper sauce; Szechuan lamb; Peking duck; pork dumplings in chili oil; and the spare ribs. Even better is that once they get to know you and recognize what you like they will recommend off menu items which are more traditionally Szechuan. The tiger peppers are a personal favorite long green and spicy. I highly recommend you try them. If you don't want it spicy there are many dishes that will suit your palate. I prefer more heat not less and China Chalet satisfies every time. If you live nearby you should hit it up and ditch your old place because you just found the only place you'll be going. I have never had a meal that was less than stellar here. Come often enough and you'll be able to tell when the chef has a night off and you can detect subtle differences in your favorite dishes. If you are adventurous try the jelly fish appetizer. Served cold looks like noodles and the taste is fantastic. read more
