In the past we were ok with what we ordered. Tonight was horrible. PuPu Platter was overcooked and inedible. My Hot and Sour soup was thick and so not good. My husband always orders the saute broccoli. It was overcooked and swimming in sauce that was not good at all. I'm not even sure I should give a 2. I don't know if the place changed hands or it was an off night or what. Used to work right around the corner & this was my fave lunch go-to. It has been a couple years. Last night, it was after 8:30, we ordered general tso chicken, Szechuan shrimp, 2 egg rolls, and crab Rangoon. This is not an eat-in place, so took to go. We sat down at the table to wait. As we were looking around, noticed it was not very clean, but I wrote it off to an hour before end of business, and they probably just hadn't done their night cleaning. Shrimp was OK. General tso was bad. One egg roll was ok, the other was soggy & inedible. The crab Rangoon was just cream cheese fried in a wonton. That's it, no crab, no other ingredient that we could see or taste. Was in town for business and wanted some fried rice and a couple egg rolls. Walked in to a one man show who was really consumed with his cellphone. Placed my order and after about 20 mins walked back in to see if it was ready and the employee / cook was on his cellphone! Wow maybe he was checking for online orders. After he finished putting together my order, he handed it to me and turned and walked back to his cellphone! They have boxes cut open with Duck Sauce, Soy Sauce with a bowl of plastic forks (not individually wrapped) and 1 pair of chop sticks (not individually wrapped). Hmmmm I'll pass considering we are in the middle of a pandemic not sure I want to take a chance wi th any of those items. The food was decent but lacked flavor and seasoning. China Chef - the outside of a restaurant at night - Chinese Near Me - Maumee, Ohio

I'm unsure whether or not they Even deserve my 2 star rating. Those pictures are of this restaurants "puupuu platter" or whatever it's called. It had 4 chicken wings, 1was undercooked and the other 3 petrified. 2 'nasty, greasy overly salty pieces of shrimp toast.' there were 2 pieces of fantail shrimp, they were.... Beyond over-fried, they were literally petrified. The shrimp inside several layers a very greasy, slightly nasty tempura or beer-batter. Truthfully, I honestly couldn't tell. The shrimp itself could have bounced because they were NOT edible. Egg rolls as usual were tasteless and so greasy that squeezing them made oils drip down my fingers. The vegetables spring roll is everything that they're egg rolls aren't. Finally there were crab Rangoons (the 3 that came with the appetizers & I ordered another order:) and teriyaki beef. One piece of the beef was tender and the other piece was worse than chewing leather. The entirity of crab rangoons were so fried that where the wonton skins touched themselves cut up my gums while I tried to chew it. Finally I had to stop trying to eat them. I broke all of the hard, inedible pieces choosing to just eat the center which defeats the purpose. I haven't tried my vegetables in garlic sauce. It smelled good. This appears to be the only place in our area that delivers besides pizza. They're hot and sour soup was my favorite. I suggest that everyone stay away from many of their appetizers. I've been giving this place my business for some years....now, food is generally good. My complaint is about the fries. This time the taste was good, but it looks as though they gave me the bottom of the barrel they were short and cold not full size fries for $3plus dollars you kinda expect normal looking fries ;) the foam container had been sweating making some of them wet not good. The wings were alright I gave them specific directions as I have since day one; and that is please pull thru driveway to the back entrance ring doorbells and you will be clicked in it's an intercom system that works very well. I always made known that there are NO doorbells in the front entrance and you can not get in. The delivery guy who may have been one of the owners? idk it's a family owned business so I thought, it does not matter but I would expect more! he calls my phone and DEMAND that I come down and there he is standing in the front, there are side window panels to see in and out on both doors. I am legally disabled and had I known I had to come down I would not of ordered from them I can walk, but it was unexpected and my knee was hurting he complains, when I said something about what he was supposed to do and he completly ignorged that! and says its snowing omg! Seriously It was melting upon hitting the ground, When i got in the bag was torn... my food could of fell out he had the 2ltr in same bag not good they usually bag their food very well, idk who he was or what he was doing I should of kept my tip, but I gave it to him anyway smh what a dissapointment they asked me in the beginning of my order which would of been on Google/ Beyound Menu), they wanted me to do a review I did not, so now they got it. Very pleased. Ordered on a Sunday night. Portions are huge. Egg foo young patties were as expected but no carrots and peas in brown gravy. Szechuan chicken was delicious but not XXX spicy like I asked. Hot and sour soup had wilted cabbage and threw the soup off. Will order again here to see what else I can find. read more

I've ordered food from here a couple times over the past few years. China Chef is located in a yucky, run-down strip mall next to the Old Kazmaier. It's not the best Chinese food I've ever had in my life, but I think it is perfectly adequate. With a tiny, undecorated eating area consisting of 2 tables, this really is mainly a take-out place. Be sure to check their website because there are always coupons for free egg rolls or free soup or free beverage, etc. You can also order online. Orders are usually ready within 10-15 minutes. I've tried several things on the menu and the only bad ones were the Lo Mein ($5.95) which I found to be very bland, and the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings ($4.50 for 8) which had an awful doughy, chewy texture like when you over cook pasta and it's just a mushy mess. I've never had a problem with the Wonton Soup ($2.95 for large) or Wonton Egg Drop Soup ($3.25 for large) and each come with 4 big wontons. I wouldn't mind a few more but I guess that's why the price is so low. The Chicken and Broccoli ($4.95 for small) and the Moo Shu Chicken ($7.95) have always had an excellent flavor and portions sizes are generous with plenty of chicken which is nice considering most Chinese restaurants really cut back on the amount of meat or chicken they give you and mostly fill the entrée with vegetables. The Egg Rolls ($1.00 each) are always good but it is pretty hard to screw those up. And I always finish with Chinese Donuts ($2.50 for 10) which are great when they are still warm! read more

Had ordered the Moo Shu Chicken and it was flavored perfectly along with the actual correct portion for the amount of pancakes. Most places uses flour tortillas but its been sometime since I've gotten the real thing and they weren't dried out nor did they break while eating. Hopefully they expand their menu to more an authentic one. People were very nice but they seem to still have delivery issues as stated in some previous reviews, overheard a call which came in during my meal. A somewhat bizarre series of events brought me to China Chef, an all but unique Chinese take out tucked in to a larger than average town in Ohio. I was driving from Philadelphia to Chicago when I got a craving for some good grub. (Read good: not the typical service station McDonald's/Roy Rogers variety). Pull up the Yelp ap: find me a hidden gem in Maumee, Ohio! Scan through the chains, a few local delis, ah... there you are. Call up my order and I'll be there in 15 minutes. Upon arrival, three school-aged kids are running around the front entrance playing some version of tag. The owners of China Chef clearly embrace the virtues of the "family owned" business. The cashier takes not one, not two, but three phone calls before I can pay the bill. (Wow, this place must be popular). I drive away, trying to shove sweet and sour chicken down my throat before I return to the turnpike. Overall, a nice place to stop if you're in the area. I assume the locals visit this place because it's the only game in town. Truth be told, I might venture here during my next trip through Ohio. read more

Unlike other Chinese restaurants, the food here is exploding with flavor. #2- The value. China Chef features 17 lunch specials for $4.75. Yes, for under $5, you get an entrée, rice and your choice of soup or soda pop. #3- The staff. All of the owners and employees are polite, attentive and efficient. First time ordering chinese take out in the Maumee area and decided to try China Chef due to decent Yelp reviews. Ordered the lunch special Szechuan Beef with Hot and Sour soup for 4.95. The soup was good, nice flavor and spice. I'd prefer more spiciness but theirs was probably appropriate for the general audience. The soup also had large mushrooms and a decent amount of some type of vegetable, not my preference again but it actually complimented the soup quite well. The size was also decent; approximately a pint or so. The entree was kinda small but with the soup I personally wasn't able to finish; and for 4.95 it was still a good amount. I wish it had more beef but I can't say they skimped on the portion, next time I'll just order without carrots, water chestnuts, and maybe broccoli since I don't touch those; maybe they'll give more meat to compensate. The sauce was nice and the beef not too chewy, overall I was very satisfied. Being new to the area, I'll try a few other places before I return but I would be content with this place as a go to if Yang's or some others all turn out to be a duds. read more

I've been looking for good fried rice in the Toledo area for some time and while many Asian restaurants serve it, only a couple offer truly good fried rice and the price is usually above $10 for it. China Chef offers what is probably the best fried rice and the price is between $5-$8 for it! I highly recommend ordering from here if you want quality food and want to eat in. I was there picking up the food for less then 5 minutes and three people stopped by to pick up theirs. They also took a few orders over the phone while I was there. They must be doing something right to be this busy. They only complain I have is that my beef wasn't as spicy as I would have wanted it to be, next time I'll ask for extra spicy. It's 2 degrees outside and I just drove 7 hours. I'm staying at a hotel and this place seems to be the only Chinese restaurant that delivers. Online ordering was simple using Beyond Menu and the food arrived in under 30 minutes. The food was hot and it was correct. The Triple Delight was okay- way too salty for my taste and I've had better Hunan sauce. The egg rolls didn't look like the photo at all and they were edible, but not great. Always had yellow gravy with almond chicken. I got the sesame chicken and I did enjoy the meal. Waaaaaayyy to many onions in the fried rice. I am all about this place. I love Asian food and I get it a couple times a week from various places around town. From high-brow to low-brow and expensive to cheap, I love it all. China Chef falls into the "cheap but good" category, similar to 3 Happiness (if you know the place). You can get a great lunch combo for $4.75 that includes an entree with fried rice and a bowl of soup. That is crazy cheap for that amount of food, especially food that is actually really good. I'll start with the soups: The egg drop soup is very standard; just like you'd get at dozens of other places around town, but they execute theirs perfectly. This is a go-to soup--you can't go wrong here. The hot and sour soup is definitely above average, and I prefer it over many other places' attempts, although I wish it was spicier. The won ton soup is perfectly serviceable; the chicken broth stands out as very good while the won ton itself is just okay. (There's a couple of takeout places whose won ton broth is super bland, like it has been watered down way too much.) The chicken noodle soup is really great, reminiscent more of classic Asian "noodle soup" rather than the American dish known as "chicken noodle soup", so don't be confused. I especially appreciate the long noodles in the soup. Really good stuff. The general Tso's chicken is really good, and I love that it is actually spicy, as opposed to just being sweet. The pork fried rice that comes with the lunch combo is the only weak dish I've had here. It isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. If you like chicken wings, theirs are awesome and cheap. You get 8 wings for less than 4 bucks, and they are nice and crispy and juicy all at once. On the other hand, the "buffalo wings" (at a Chinese place? huh?) are actually pretty good, but it won't be what you expect. The wings don't seem to be the same great wings used in the regular appetizer, but rather these seem to be heavily breaded and are decidedly less crisp. Furthermore, they don't use a buffalo sauce on them; it is some sort of Asian BBQ sauce with a hint of spiciness. Not my favorite, but they really aren't bad either. Personally, I'd rather order the regular wings and throw some real buffalo sauce on them. I'm looking forward to trying more entrees, but after eating here a few times, I really like this place. From what I've seen so far, I recommend the place based on the great soups and appetizers and well executed entrees and sauces at a good price. Also, I LOVE the online ordering. It works flawlessly and it is super easy and quick. I just build my order online, click "pay at the counter", and my food is waiting for me when I get there. We went online to order which was easy and the food was ready in 15 minutes. All three of us liked the food. There serving sizes were more than enough, in fact too much. We have been ordering from China Chef for several years now. Over the past couple of years, we've ordered their beef teryaki--and it alwasy came juicy, tasty and cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, tonight our order came in tough, dry and overcooked. We called and they sent a replacement order--unfortunately it was in the same shape as the first. When trying to explain this to the manager over the phone we had a disconnect on juicy well cooked Vs. undercooked. Unfortunately, she couldn't or wouldn't comprehend what I was trying to explain. She also insisted that the sticks were cooked correctly. Unfotunately, the impasse has lost them a customer. I can't recommend them any more. read more

Some food very, very good...better than most American version Chinese restaurants. Placing an order for delivery (by phone) is very painful...English is NOT a second language for the staff. And if you place an order for delivery, you are gambling on the time frame. We have placed orders online and it will say 45 minutes. An hour an a half later we call, and are told another half hour. This is consistent. They then say if we pick it up, it will be ready, so obviously, not enough drivers. They do not call you telling you they will be late, and they get a little testy when you ask for a time frame...I am sure because they are busy. read more
