I never remember that this place is called China Express until I get there, I always think of it as Happy Chinese, which seems fitting because half of the experience was how surprisingly happy it always makes me to stop by for my favorite Chinese food. I used to live nearby and frequented the place, the staff are incredibly friendly and personable. They remember you and what you like, the food is fantastic and the service is quick. The two young people who work the counter always have a good sense of humor. They sell panda shaped biscuits filled with chocolate in little hexagon boxes. They make my favorite chow mein. The mood in there is infectious, the dinner crowd seem like the gathering of friends, meeting Tuesday for take-out Chinese food. The place gets crowded quickly with only a very tiny space in front of the counter and a few plastic chairs and tables stuck outside, but it's worth stopping by. You'll be in and out with your dinner in a few minutes to take home and you'll probably leave in a better mood. read more

The coolest Chinese take out anywhere! The hot and sour soup is as good as any sit-down-formal Chinese restaurant in the Bay Area! And contrary to what someone else has had to say, their food is cooked in small quantities to keep it really fresh. I have actually had to wait while they were cooking what I wanted. There is certainly a bit of the "comfort food" formula to some of the recipes. But it is the best take out in the county. Did I forget to mention how cool the family is that owns the place? Had to sign up for yelp for this place because they are great. Have been going to them for the past two years since I moved to Novato, they always have a good selection and are fast to ring you up. Also the son who works there is always in a good mood and is happy to help you. Tonight is the first time we ordered delivery and it was fast, easy and inexpensive. For the past few years I had no problem eating the very average food that China Express offers. On Sat. my pregnant fiance wanted soup, which is something I do not believe I ever purchased from China Express. After leaving and driving home both of us agreed that the soup was horrible and needed to be returned. Shockingly the brother and sister who I believe own China Express at the same time told me "the soup is fine and they would not exchange it for another soup'. At no time did I ask for my money back. So I just left the horrible sweet and sour soup which tasted like sweet and sour pepper on the counter and told them to have a nice day. I will never go back again. Michael read more

Ok so where do I start. The delivery girl forgot to bring change and the best they could offer me was store credit. If I had been aware of the quality of the food I was about to eat i would have never agreed to this. Secondly they didnt bring me any rice. NO RICE! Unheard of for a chinese food place! The crab rangoons had maybe half an ounce of cream cheese in them, absolutely pathetic. My potstickers (which they pushed me into buying to be over the $25 delivery minimum) were chewy and tepid. All I had to do was open up the hot and sour soup and smell it to know I didn't want anything to do with it. The orange chicken was passable but one saving grace hardly stands up against such numerous and blatant mistakes. Needless to say I will not be claiming my store credit, and so what i really ate for dinner tonight was 40 dollars I'll never see again. Save yourself the headache and find somewhere else to eat. (P.S. that hot and sour soup was SLUDGE. I threw the entire container in my compost heap without eating any of it) read more

I used to really like this place before they switched owners. Their food used to be the best in town...full of flavor and pipping hot even after you brought it home. Now, it seems the food lacks flavor, it's cold when I get it home, the broccoli isn't cooked....pretty much raw in the beef and broccoli. No flavor in the chow mein or chicken. Being a SF Native, I'm spoiled and know what excellent Chinese food when I eat it. This is your average 'to go' joint. Wish they had a bigger variety of vegetables. Fried rice is below average & has strange taste to me. Orange Chicken is good. The amount they give is inconsistent; One order of (insert dish) is same amount as double (insert dish here). Great Chinese to go. It is a small place, family owned and run. They deliver which is great. Dont expect the best Chinese in town if you go there. I go there because its fast, cheap, tasts good, and you get huge portions. If you get the bigger box meal you get well over a pound of food for about $8 out the door. This place used to be better. I no longer see Martin or his family and the quality has gone downhill. The food no longer appears fresh in the case and some of the dishes do not look appealing. I was even given rancid sweet and sour sauce. I called them to let them know and they treated the call and the report as no big deal. I just moved to Novato, checked Yelp, and discovered China Express. So far I have just tried about 10 items that you can see behind the glass. I agree with the 4 star ratings for all items that I have tried are good to very good, you get a value for the price, and the staff thanks you for your purchase. We've eaten there about five times, and it's been great every time. Friendly service, and if you're willing to choose from the buffet of food, it's also very fast. What a great value and best Chinese in Novato. Can compete with the best in SF at great prices. Favorites are Kung pow chicken, Mongolian beef, Hunan anything. Fantastic potstickers- big and wonderful. We go regularly and have always had great food and impeccable service. read more
