We came to Royal Thai for dinner and it was a nice homey experience. The interior is cozy and decorated with lots of cute little trinkets. It was not busy at all on a Sunday so we were seated right away. We ordered the fresh rolls and the crab rangoons for starters and I ordered the wonton soup for my main. The fresh rolls were indeed fresh, filled with carrots, cucumbers, avocados, and apple. The peanut sauce it came with was warm and savory, it paired well with the rolls. The crab rangoons were good too, smaller than what I was expecting, but it was executed well. The filling of cream cheese and imitation crab was rich and creamy, which went well with the sweet chili sauce it came with. The outer shell was fried and crispy, and the filling was generous for the small outer wrapper. The wonton soup is definitely large enough for a main, it had maybe 8-10 wontons, slices of bbq pork, 2 pieces of whole shrimp, and some type of spinachy vegetable. The broth was light yet flavorful, and I added some chili flake to make it spicy. The wonton wrappers were nice, but I found the filling to be dry and rough. It didn't have any larger pieces of snappy shrimp that I was looking for, it was all minced small with the pork and the filling itself was small compared to the wonton wrapper. Besides that, I liked everything else in the soup, the bbq pork, the whole shrimp, and the veggies were all good quality and cooked well. My bf got the tofu kra-prow krob, and the tofu was fried really well and covered in a nice sweet and spicy sauce. He had this with rice, but his only critique is he wished there were veggies or something else in the dish besides fried tofu and cashews. The other 2 people at our table ordered noodles, and they enjoyed both their pad kee mao and the pad see ew. Service was pretty attentive, our small water glasses were refilled a good amount, and the food was good overall. This is a solid place for yummy Thai food, with ample parking close by and a nice staff. read more

I've tried a good share of Thai places in Marin and I have to say this is one of the best ones! It was my first time ordering from here and it's safe to say that I will be coming back again. I ordered through DoorDash so I can't really speak on the service aspect but their food is convincing enough. I ordered the crab Rangoons as my starter and they were so tasty. Next I ordered the Bangkok street noodles which were something new but I can genuinely say that I will order them again. The entree was full of flavor and the chicken and shrimp were yummy. I placed an order via Uber Eats. I got calamari, shrimp pad thai, and a Thai iced tea. The calamari was pretty pricey for the small portion that I got. It was also really salty. The pad thai was better in portion size. Flavor was good and very fulfilling. The shrimps were $3 extra but they were huge and they gave a good amount. I noticed the noodles are thinner than usual which I actually really liked! Can't go wrong with the Thai tea either! It was refreshing and creamy. Finally ordered something after driving past daily and seeing decent reviews. Unfortunately, my fire cashew chicken was basically inedible. I could hardly cut through the chicken with a steak knife let alone chew it. This was the driest chicken I've ever had. I removed the chicken in hopes of salvaging the rest but there was such a heavy fish sauce flavor that I didn't end up eating any. Perhaps this was a one off but I'm not willing to gamble when the prices are so high. Sorry Royal Thai, I should have just continued to drive by. read more

My friend and I were visiting our homegirl and we decided to eat here because we came from San Jose and didn't know any food places in the area. We were greeted by this really nice server and made us feel at home. The restaurant also had that nostalgic Asian smell when you're visiting your family/friends. I was not craving Thai food, but guess what... it turned out to be one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever had in my life. Here's what we ordered; I mean devoured. Yellow Thai curry and green curry (spicier) with both chicken, papaya salad, green bean spicy beef, steamed rice, Thai tea, and mango sticky rice. EVERYTHING is a 10/10 of what we ordered. It was an excellent atmosphere and our food came out in a timely manner. It's a 70 mile drive back home, but we'll definitely come back when we're back in town! read more

Thus place is super sketchy. I accidentally ordered through Uber Eats because my wife had recently changed the delivery address to send something to a family member. I immediately noticed the mistake and called Uber Eats to cancel the order. Uber Eats contacted the restaurant to cancel the order, and the restaurant refused to cancel because they insisted the food was already prepared (not five minutes had passed). Vegetarian Friendly! The food was good I forgot to take a picture of all that was ordered! The veggie rice paper wraps were a great vegetarian appetizer. I enjoyed the pumpkin curry and garlic eggplant dish. Portions were perfect to share. Both were packed with flavor, soft and melted in the mouth! Unfortunately the curry did not come with rice. Other Thai restaurants I've gone to down the street have their curry dishes with rice at no extra charge. $55 for 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, side of rice and 20% tip. Pretty reasonable. read more

My family friend chose Royal Thai for us to eat an early dinner at. The restaurant's located in the French Quarter and has a private parking lot. The interior is simple and comfortable with Thai-inspired decor. They're operating during dinner hours, primarily as takeout, but plan to resume lunch hours within the next month or two. Their menu is expansive with traditional and non-traditional Thai style appetizers, curries, stir-fry, noodles, rice, and specialty dishes. We shared the Kha Nom Bueng appetizer--which I had never seen on a menu before. The appetizer was a scrumptious Thai crepe stuffed with minced proteins, shredded coconut, and bean sprouts. The crepe was on the more chewy and doughy side but still had a nice crunch to it. It had a strong coconut taste and was on the sweeter side. For dinner, I wanted to have something that I've wanted to try for the longest time--larb. I ordered the Larb Chicken, duck and pork are the other protein options available. The dish came with an ample amount of juicy minced chicken on a bed of lettuce--although I wish there were more greens. It was light but rich in flavor from the sauce--although I wish it was more acidic as it was on the sweeter end. The dish itself was filling and I ended up taking half of it home. Service was fine, it took a while for our dishes to arrive and we weren't checked on even though we were one of the only tables inside. Royal Thai is a decent Thai restaurant in San Rafael. It has a homey and comforting vibe to it, service is okay, and the food is good. Prices are a little on the higher end, but I'm happy to have tried new Thai dishes here. read more

Terrible service, ignored, overpriced, and took almost two hours to get our meal as it all came out staggered! This was our first time dining here, and we were really excited. We had family from out of town and was looking forward to a special dining experience. Unfortunately, we received the complete opposite. The staff was obviously overwhelmed by the amount of takeout orders, and with only three tables dining in the entire restaurant, they could not provide even adequate service to their patrons. They definitely put the takeout orders ahead of the few tables dining inside. That's a shame. Long story short our meals came out at different times. One person waited an hour and a half for their meal. The rest of us were finished by the time the last person got their food. Someone kept coming to the table and saying the food is coming, but never apologizing for the delay or acknowledging that this has become a very uncomfortable situation. All the while we remained kind and understanding because we know that things happen. Yet, I would have expected some sort of courtesy to make up for the delay in the food. How about offer a dessert? How about don't charge for the meals that took over an hour to get to the table? how about just talk to the table and explain what's happening? But instead they decided that ignoring us was a better option. The icing on the cake and why we will never return is because even after all of that they stuck us with a 20% gratuity! The thing is we would have tipped them well because again we understand that things happen but to add 20% gratuity to our check with such horrible service, people eating at different times, not trying to make it better... That's just bad business and very rude! They even had the audacity after all that to charge us $4 for a side of peanut sauce. It's like they could care less if we came back. read more

Why the low rating, yelpers? This, in my humble opinion, is one of the best Thai places in San Rafael. Cozy dining room, good service, and delicious food. I got the pad see ew with tofu, and it was seriously the tastiest plate of noodles I've had all year. Excellent sauce. I always request soy sauce on the side just in case, but it was perfectly balanced already and definitely didn't need it. Good portion size, too. I was able to pack some to go. The fresh spring rolls my friend ordered were quite good as well. Very crisp and vaguely sweet; what was that, asian pear? Our waters were refilled and everything was brought promptly. Another Thai place in San Rafael? Yes. It is really interesting that I still haven't been able to go to everyone and still finding "new" ones. That said Royal Thai isn't anything but new. This place is here for ages, over 30 years to be exact. It is a place that has a warming, charming feel inside. It is placed in an area where you might never have been before in San Rafael : the "French quarter" you might have driven by but did you stopped? The Royal Thai is worth a stop. They have the typical Thai food like green, red and yellow curry and pad Thai but also some unique item like the crap meat and pork filled prawns (dancing prawns or shrimps) they look great when my friend got hers. I had the vegetarian egg rolls (since unfortunately the egg rolls with chicken also contain shrimps (in my my case I would say "contaminated with shrimps" since I don't like seafood lol). The first serving came out half way frozen ( they are obviously made in house but of course pre-made ) but I have to admit that we have been the first dinner guests very early and I'll think the fryer wasn't just hot enough. The second serving was indeed that good that I'll had to order another serving! Then I'll had the green curry. It was hotter then I'll had it at other places but I don't mentioned that I wanted it mild (and the server didn't asked). But it was good. Was it the best green curry I ever had? no but a real solid good one. And especially with curries it's always a family recipe. Then I'll had the fried coconut ice cream as desert which was fancy (not my first one) and I also had better ones before. When I write it it sounds awful and it is not at all, it's a great restaurant with good quality, big enough servings and very friendly always smiling waiters and fast service. It is just that I had a lot of food to compare and it's hard to the top when you have international experiences. Beside that the restaurant it self is cosy and very inviting from the inside they use a better napkin then others. So it's not a tissue napkin that rips apart easily. But it's also not a cloth napkin. It's in between and has a good feeling. For me that is a sign that they really care of what they are doing. So they still earned five stars since I have no reason to put one away only cause I had better when everything was good. Not even the flaw with a half frozen egg roll will bring it down. It is a Taste opinion and you can make your self. If you are going ther just make sure you walk in the middle of the French quarter which is (unfortunately loud due to the freeway surrounding it) but at the same time it is a. But I can speak to their food, which I'd place at the upper end of generic Thai dishes. I nearly always get chicken satay and green curry with chicken over rice, which I quite enjoy. I loved the lunch special of Roast duck with rice and veggies. The rice was plain and not flavoured as at chao praya. The rice they served was not jasmine rice and that was a tad disappointing. The portion was just right but might come up a bit short if I was famished. The price for the lunch plate at $7.95 was perfect! On my second visit, I had the Pad Thai. It was tasty and was definitely worth the money. It's definitely the best Thai restaurant in the San Rafael downtown area. Even better than My-Thai and that's saying quite a bit for around here. Very good. Flavorful. I did feel like the portions could have been bigger as I was still hungry after the garlic duck in black pepper sauce that I ordered. The papaya salad is delicious. Could have used extra fresh lime juice for more acid but I'm picky that way. The salmon wrapped in banana leaf is good but the accompanying green sauce is too sweet for my personal taste. Would have preferred something more savory. Somewhat bland to me. Needed salt. The eggplant entree is gorgeous. They know how to cook eggplant with acid so the purple color of the skin is retained. Very well executed but again on the sweeter side of a savory entree. The sticky rice was old/dry as a side. Maybe it's better earlier in the day. Jasmine rice was fine as a side. All in all it's good. On the higher side of price though. I'll just have to ask for extra limes for acid and bring my own salt. read more
