Favorite Chinese take out place in the area. My family ordered food from here when I was growing up (and they still come here) and now that I've been moved out, I still drive back to the area to get take out. I really enjoy the Kung Pao Chicken & Orange Chicken. Personally, I find that the Kung Pao Chicken used to be much spicier, but now it's more mild and bearable. If you like spicy, I'd suggest clarifying when ordering that you want it spicier. The Orange Chicken has actual pieces of orange peel in it and is nice to balance out the spice from the other dishes. The family that runs this place is very hard working and gracious. They're also open late every day which is convenient, and they get your food out pretty quickly even when it's slammed. Getting there can be confusing since it's hidden in the back and there's limited parking, so I recommend calling ahead to order so you can pick up your food and go without having to park. I say best in quotes because compared to Chinese take out in say NYC or San Francisco, these places would not come close to being the best. That being said, China Express has very solid take out, big portions for the price (slightly cheaper than their competitors), and they are very speedy. - General Tso - Good ratio of breading to meat and slightly sweeter than other General Tso. - Kung Pao Chicken - I was thrown off by the way they make it here. The chicken is breaded and the dish was dry. Typically, it's not breaded and there's a little bit of sauce. Honestly, it grew on me and I would order it again. - Combination fried rice - Needed more soy sauce or salt but overall very tasty - Hot and sour soup - This was not very good. This used to be my families go to food place, for delivery. Food always used to be fresh, hot and delivered on time. I discovered this place online, 4 years back and have ordered from here religiously. I have gotten food catered for family events from here. This place used to be my favorite chinese food takeout while pregnant, when food cravings kicked it. Never did I feel heavy, bloated or uneasy after having it. Something seems to have changed here in the last one year or so. The food has become substandard and there seems to be no quality control. The last 2 times I ordered the food, it was extremely oily. We couldn't taste any of the dishes, only tasted grease. Threw out everything. Kung Pao chicken, had a very strange metallic taste, i dont even know how that is possible. This food is not priced cheaply and I don't mind paying more for good food, but this was a complete waste of my money. Each time I just paid for oil. But, the spare ribs were a little too sweet for my taste. Tge sweet and sour soup was excellent. The dry noodles were not to my liking. They were perhaps stale. I do have particular standards for my dry Chinese noodles. They need to be on the oily side, crisp and somewhat "rough" in texture. Being that this was the first time I ordered from them, the distasteful noodles won't cause me to NOT order again. But if they are not pleasing next time, I will look elsewhere. Over the past few months I have ordered "Chinese" (actually, Americanized Chinese) food for lunch MANY times from several different Chinese restaurants in the Tysons/Vienna/Oakton area, and today I am going to review several of them, so you can check out all of these reviews to see my conclusions. So this is an updated review of China Express, focusing more on lunch takeout than dinner delivery as before. I have done takeout from this restaurant several times now, and after comparing it with many other places in the area, I believe they are about middle of the pack in food quality, slightly below average in value, and the service - factoring in their website - is just "OK." The portions are just average, including the average-to-small spring roll. Meanwhile, the food quality has deteriorated since I reviewed them several years ago. It's not bad - it's just not nearly as good as way back when. The freied rice is mediocre IMO, and the beef with green pepper is mere shell of its former self from many years ago. Now, the food is just "OK." And the prices are now significantly higher. Not a great value, IMO. Frankly . . . now I can get equivalent food quality and portions at the same or better prices from that huge national Chinese food chain in the mall, whom I shall not name. When you place or pick up your order, the person who greets you is polite and friendly. I think they use high school or college students for that, and they are pleasant. Their website, on the other hand, is terrible. And I do not understand why so many places like this one contract their ordering out to Beyondmenu.com, as their software just does not work on a computer, period. Only works on a phone. Boo. Bottom line is that China Express is "OK," but not a go-to place for me in the area any longer due to deteriorated food quality, increased prices, and better competition. If I could give them 3.5 stars instead of 4, I probably would, but they do give you A LOT of food for each entree so I'm comfortable with giving 4 stars. I used to order from this place a lot along with several co-workers during my past employment in McLean, VA, and it was great back then and was unbeatable Chinese fast food. However, ordering it again just today after a long hiatus from them, I experienced that a few things have changed in terms of their recipes. The general tso's chicken is NOW almost indistinguishable from the orange chicken in terms of color and flavor. It used to have a robust spiced flavor with a great, almost maroon color to match. The general tso that we got was this basic orange like the orange chicken and tasted far too similar to it too. Also the batter wasn't as crispy as it used to be. I was somewhat disappointed as this used to be among my favorites from them. The sesame chicken also lacked the bolder sesame sauce that I remembered them for when I worked in McLean. The only thing that stayed pretty much the same (in a good way!) was the kung pao chicken. Also, I ordered spicy for all four dishes (kung pao chicken and shrimp, sesame chicken, orange chicken, and general tso chicken) and none of them had even the slightest hint of spice except maybe the kung pao but very, very slight. Even my 11 year old nephew who normally prefers mild was able to eat from all entrees with zero issues and didn't realize they were supposed to spicy. Having said that, we all still enjoyed all the food but it was definitely less stellar than their recipes before. It's time for me to visit China, especially Szechuan area, to get some actually spicy and bold-flavored Chinese food. As a foodie who was lost in her cravings for something similar to home cooking, I resorted to my go-to: lo mein. While on my hunt for food close by work, I had time to kill and figured out where offers the cheapest options. China Express is located on the very back row of the business complex, so don't worry, you're not lost. Their bbq pork lo mein wasn't what I expected, when I realized it wasn't crispy roasted pork but char-siu pork my appetite wasn't deterred. Their dinner portion is enough for two small bodies or for one hangry taller body, as a short girl with eyes bigger than her stomach, I already know this portion is a separate sit down feasting occasion. It's loaded with sliced veggies (carrot, celery, portobellos mushrooms, and green onions) and bbq pork. The lo mein is the best part! It's your typical thick lo mein, my only disappointment is that it doesn't have that special charred flavor you can only accomplish with a very hot wok. Nonetheless, the noodles weren't too soft, the veggies were crunchy, although just on the more bland side which isn't a bad thing, we all have different palates for savory. I also ordered a side of their crab wontons, wrapped into triangles rather than a more bite size orientation. I think that's the best part, six huge pieces of triangles filled with imitation crab meat in a cheese sauce -which slightly reminds me of a fettuccine with a white sauce- soo delicious. Fair warning, don't wait 15 minutes for it to become cold, eat those while they're piping hot! The staff were few but very kind and extroverted. They do deliver at a limited proximity for free. If you work at the mall like I do, I've confirmed they'll find you inside to hand you piping hot Chinese food. :) read more

This was really good Chinese food that was astoundingly cheap (fed a whole office lunch for about $50). Considering there's probably a high volume of orders around lunchtime in Tysons, the delivery was fast too -- 45 minutes from calling it in at 11 a.m. The only thing I'd point out is that even the large portions are not very big. Order several things if you have a lot of people to feed or you're very hungry. I can't imagine how the small or lunch portions look because the large boxes were just the smallish to-go boxes you get from other places. I'm used to a normal clamshell takeout container sort of portion when I order something delivery from a restaurant, and with Chinese especially it always seems like you have more leftovers than what you get at China Express. Overall, I would totally eat this Chinese again! The orange chicken was very flavorful, the garlic pork was a really good kind of spicy and I also enjoyed what I tried of the kung pao tofu. This place is the definition of "hole in the wall" but I'm so glad I decided to give it a try. It's kind of in a sketchy location in the corner of a strip mall, but definitely worth checking out. Their pork fried rice and wonton soup were both A++ and ready within minutes. There's no area to sit down to eat, but the food remained hot until I got home.
