Let's start with the primary reason for coming here. It's dang good Chinese food. We eat here every time we visit Estes. We do the the orange chicken a lot, but also love the Pad Thai. The appetizers are fun to try different things. The humans wife team work the place themselves and do a great job! The restaurant is well kept and clean. It is "carry out" only no dine in options, but with Rock Cut brewery next door even when dining in was an option we alway took the food next door to enjoy a great beer. When Covid hit they switched to "carry out" and remain this way. When asked why they kept the "carry out" model she said it's nice to support each other. The neighboring brewery send business to her and she send business to them. Long story short you can dine in at Rock Cut brewing. We've eaten at China Garden in the past for years and the food was excellent, but not under this new owner. The so-called coconut shrimp was small, tasteless little kabobs of shrimp with not even a hint of coconut. The soup had none of the traditional taste of hot and sour soup. I've eaten at many other Chinese restaurants all ranging from superb to good. This hot and sour soup had very little flavor and the aftertaste was very unpleasant. My dinner partner had the Beef Chow Fun and the smell that wafted up after opening the container smelled like very common meatloaf no traditional seasonings. And to add insult to injury, even though you place the order, you pickup the food and you do the cleanup, and absolutely no service is provided, still the minimum expected tip is an outrageous 18.5%! As much as we liked Li and wish her well in her retirement, we love the new owners! Everything was freshly prepared and very tasty. The recipes did not seem to be the same from the previous owners but were, in our opinion, much improved. The hot and sour soup and cream cheese wontons, for instance, were very different/much better than what we'd had in the past. We ordered 5 lunch specials: Kung pao chicken, chicken with garlic sauce, curry chicken, beef with green peppers, and chicken and broccoli. We also had an order of egg rolls on top of the soup and wontons mentioned previously. Everything was outstanding! Huge portions, enough for 2 meals each. The new owners, David and Kelly, I believe, could not have been kinder. One thing I will mention is that the online ordering let me place an order before they were open for right at their opening time (11:30am) so hopefully this gets corrected in future! We were overcharged way over the total it should have been. We even asked for an itemized bill, in which the lady proceeded to write out the prices by hand. We asked for her to do this in front of us, and much to our disappointment the total she came to was $15 less than what she had put on our bill. She then got angry at us stating that taxes were the reason for the discrepancy, but could not tell us the percentage for this supposed "tax". She then took out the 4 plastic utensils and napkins from our takeout bag (not sure if this was supposedly what those $15 was for--what a scam!) We lost all trust immediately and left hungry. We stayed in Estes Park for a week and this was definitely the top 3 memorable food joints we've been to. I can't understand why the local Thai place has better ratings than China Garden. We ordered the pork egg rolls, chicken and vegetables and Kung Pao beef. Evening was ready in 10 min and our order was not only accurate, but packaged neatly with every accompaniments you could ever need. Both of the dishes were loaded with vegetables; full of celery, zucchini, red and green bell peppers, bok choy, and snap peas. The medley of vegetables beautifully complimented the generous portions of meat. We were so happy to gain some redemption from all of the other just okay places we tried. I'm going to preface this review by saying that I'd give China Garden a 4-star rating for food, and a 1-star rating for service. The service experience was so bad that it biases my review toward the 2-star rating it currently has. I'll start with the service: We called to order takeout at around 7:45pm one night while we were staying in Estes Park. The woman who was on the other end of the phone was very short with us, but took our orders, no problem, and told us that the food would be ready in half an hour. We went to pick up the food and found that there was only 1 car in the parking lot for the restaurant, and only 1 couple inside (not a great sign to start). We walked in and wanted to check over our order, and were quickly berated on coming in past when they had closed, and the woman kept yelling at us that she wasn't taking any more orders, since they had closed. Apparently the restaurant has changed their seasonal hours, and that change isn't reflected on Yelp or Google, so it showed that they were open until 9pm, when the seasonal hours were changed to 8pm. She kept trying to charge us for extra things, and we had to fight to even get forks and napkins included with our meal. To say the whole experience was a mess would be sugar coating it. Ultimately, if they didn't want to serve us at 8:15, they shouldn't have taken our order at 7:45 and told us to pick it up at 8:15. The only thing that even slightly made up for this horrendous experience was the fact that the food was pretty solid. All of the people in my party had no complaints about their food, and it's one of few random Chinese restaurants that we've encountered that we can actually say this about. If you feel that you can brave the bad service and really have a hankering for Chinese food, maybe give China Garden a shot. Otherwise, stay away! read more

Very friendly and nice lady but I felt sick the whole night after eating the sesame chicken

When we got back to our cabin, we realized they had left things out of our order. Called, trying to remedy the situation, and the lady did nothing but argue and not let my wife get a word in, insisting again and again that they did not mess up. So, terrible, as far as service goes. The food was so-so. My daughter refused to eat hers. The rest of the meals got eaten, but we're nothing exceptional. My family and I searched for a Chinese restaurant and came across this place. When we walked in, everyone was in the back and no one greeted us. The place was filthy but we decided to stick around and attempt to try the food out of sheer hunger. We sat down and mins later someone came out from the back kitchen to hand out menus. The following in this review will highlight my 1 star review. If I could give a zero star review, I would. Moment before the waitress delivers the menus, my son accidentally knocked over the soy sauce on the table.... when the waitress saw the very small spill, she began reprimanding my son and told him "why, you knock over sauce, don't do it again". Being taken back from her response I explained that it was an accident. She stated "I don't care l, don't do it again"... I told the lady that we were going to leave and she stated "that's fine, I don't care". I asked her what her deal was and she stated " you are the parents, you should watch the kids... if it was my kids, that wouldn't happen". That just pissed me off! Price was sky-high...but food high everywhere...so did not ding for that. Guessing the strong seemingly unmistakable taste of iron I encountered at bottom of the take-out dinner was from rust. Do they cook with cast-iron pans? Sincerely hope so. Hoping was not blood, since--among other things--it was a chicken dinner. Could not eat another bite after tasting that and left to use my imagination what it could be. Threw out about half of the meal including side orders. Did eat the [wrapped] fortune cookie. Pro Tip: you should never be left imagining what is in your dinner. I give it a 5-star #WTF rating [Worst Terrible Food] for having to rinse my mouth out & left trying to figure out explanation. P.S. I do not understand why the Thai restaurant gets the good ratings! China Garden is fantastic & their food is wonderful...They only have one waitress (the Owner) but she works as fast as she can! We live in Estes Park and this is our go-to place for delicious carry-out. Their curries are AMAZING. Choose any one, seriously, they are all AMAZING. My kids always order the sesame chicken, chicken fried rice, and General Tso chicken and they are always delicious. And, over the years, we have also tried their Mongolian beef, beef with broccoli, dumplings, spring rolls, moo shu pork, etc., and, in short, everything we have ever tried has been hot, fresh, and delicious. As for the staff, they are all wonderful and work incredibly hard. Li is super sweet and I am always amazed by how tirelessly she works every day. This is the best chinese restaurant I've tried in Colorado. That's really all you need to know, but if you need more convincing, I'll go on... It is excellent. The quality of the meats is high. The food is prepared fresh and tasted delicious. The prices are reasonable for the Estes Park area and they have a good size lunch menu. Lunch specials average $10 and come with a entree, rice (white or fried), and an egg roll. I tried the seasme chicken. It was fantastic. The sauce was certainly house-made with generous flakes of chili pepper. I also tried the mongolian beef and I was reslly impressed by how vibrant the veggies were and how tender the beef was. The flavors are bold, fresh, and delicious. The egg roll was so crispy, the rice fluffy and fresh. The enviroment is peacful and clean. The restaurant smelled clean with a hint of incense waifting in the air. The Eastern decor is pleasant and far from overbearing, with beautifully detailed artwork hanging on the walls. Most of the seating is comfortable booths but there are a few table and chair settings for larger parties. They appear to handle up to 8 people. From the outside, the restaurant appears a bit divey, but the inside is a welcome surprise. The views are beautiful, as is the case throughout Estes Park. You must try this place. They are good! I saw some bad reviews and was reluctant, but I had a good experience tonight with China Garden. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken and General Pso's Chicken. Both orders were delicious and more than sufficient in quantity. Because of COVID, it's carry out only. The lady I spoke with was very kind. I'm glad I didn't listen to the few negative reviews. These guys are good. Our first two nights we ordered expensive steak from two pricey recommended steakhouses for carry out; it was alright, but cold--disappointing for what we paid. Tonight when we came back to our hotel with our order from China Garden, our dinner was packed nicely and WARM and we were able to enjoy a delicious hot meal.
