Ms. Lucy is a very nice lady, always so kind and the food is the best I've come across in the area.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in North Chicago, not only is the food cooked fresh and to order but mainly because of the owner. She is hardworking. Im pretty sure it is just her working there. She is the nicest person and is personable. This has been my family's go-to place since I was young. Every time we call in the order, she already knows and makes sure to ask about the family and how we are. I've actually never ate inside, there are a few tables, but my experience is always take out. Depending on when you order it, it can be a bit of a wait. Call ahead. Food is usually pretty good. My go to is the general tso chicken. Among my others is the pepper steak ,swzchewan chicken, and chicken fried rice. Recently started getting the dinner combo. Great price for the amount of food. I ordered the Yanchow Special and it was a HIT! So much flavor and so delicious, it has a variety of chicken, shrimp, and pork along side some veggies and served with crispy noodles. The lunch special is something I will always come back for, great price and delicious. I got the seafood combination with plain fried rice, a crab Rangoon, and hot sour soup. I came in for dine in with someone and we were seated promptly. There were two people waiting for their carry out orders and they were receiving several calls. When it came time for us to order she seemed very rushed. Turns out it was only one cook and her so I understand why she was stressed. I ordered my meal and then I was gonna get some appetizers and when I started asking for said appetizer she said no and walked away. We weren't even done ordering. Really bad experience here. I saw the mixed reviews and was eager to give this place a chance. The beginning of my arrival was perfectly mediocre; one overworked waitress, was seated in a dingy dining room with only three regular tables, one of which was dirty with the waitress' personal items and food. But it quickly went from just okay, to straight up bad. NONE of the food was good. The crab rangoon was lazily prepared with a huge chunk of imitation crab carelessly tossed in with some cream cheese. Chicken was watery, rice was old, soup was tasteless and lukewarm. After the waitress delivered our food, we never saw her again. She never came back to refill drinks, she never asked if we needed anything, she never cleared plates, offered a to-go box, or offered to bring the bill. We both ended up eating all the ice out of our water glasses purely due to thirst. After an entire THIRTY MINUTES (yes, thirty actual minutes, we had a text timestamp) of being ignored by the waitress, I got up and went behind the counter and got us takeout containers from the shelf. We packaged up our own leftovers and went to the front to attempt to pay. We rang the bell and waited about 4min for the waitress to come out of the back and ring us up. Bear in mind, the entire time we were being ignored, the waitress was audibly taking carry-out orders over the phone. She was fine, she was working, but I guess considered her in-house guests less important than her phone orders. Which, I could possibly forgive, IF this had been some hidden gem, home-cooked-with-love food. But it wasn't. It was very standard, very low-quality, cheaply and carelessly-prepared, Chinese takeout. Not a good meal, and the leftovers ended up going in the trash. We will absolutely not return to try any other dishes. For the people who (incomprehensibly) want to order takeout from here... Well, first of all, why? But I'd recommend Tokyo @ siam, Ming Toy, or even freaking Panda Express as nearby options with better quality. Why do you enable bad businesses like this? read more

Found myself in Waukegan for the day so I headed here for lunch around 11:45am with a couple friends on a Wednesday. The place was empty but for 2-3 other tables. The lunch special here CANNOT be beat!!! $6.25 for an entree, white or fried rice, an egg roll, and soup (hot and sour, egg drop or wanton). Portion sizes are HUGE. I had the sesame chicken luncheon special and I could barely finish it. The waitress was as sweet as pie, too. When I ordered my sesame chicken she asked if I would like light or dark meat, which I think is a nice little touch! I ordered a mix of the two because I couldn't decide. The egg roll was super fresh, just out of the fryer. Delicious, but for some reason felt a little more greasy than the average egg roll. The sesame chicken was flavorful, and breaded and the fried rice was decent, too. We also ordered chicken lo mein for the table - it was a tad over cooked (the noodles were mostly broken) but the flavor was good and I like that they added some celery to the mix to give it a little crunch! Almond and fortune cookies served at the end of the meal, of course. This place gives you exactly what you should expect for a $6.25 Chinese lunch special. Was it the best Chinese I've ever had in my life? Of course not, but it was also only $6.25, the service was great, and the food came out in about 10 minutes. My Sailor graduated Bootcamp today and wanted Chinese. This and one other spot was all we found on the map. This isn't any fancy spot to eat at, but we definitely enjoyed the meal. The atmosphere is very "fast-food-ish", but the food was great. We had the family meal for 5 and still boxed food up to-go. We were very well taken care of and served. Ms Sally was very attentive. Yes, this is coming from a Taiwanese person who has lived all my life eating authentic Chinese food. After exploring a few nearby neighborhoods around for a few days, I rest my case that this is the best Chinese food you will get around the area. I didn't expect very much when I first entered but I was pleasantly surprised after the dishes came out. My favorite was the Cashew Chicken (translated to gong bao ji ding in Chinese). Lots of pieces of chicken with delicious chopped vegetables like carrots, celery, green peppers, green onions, mushrooms, and cashews. We ordered it made mild but next time I think I'll try the medium. The best part is that a plate of this for dinner can probably last me 3 dinners if I eat it alone for take out - a good deal for a student. I'm also quite a fan of the Beef with Garlic Sauce, Egg-drop soup, hot and sour soup, and the won ton soup. If you enjoy sweet and sour chicken, I'd say give it a try. However, a dish that can probably be skipped is the beef fried rice. Nothing too special there. Anyway, for a town with barely any Asian food, Hunan will for sure be my go to place when I'm craving Chinese. I guess I'm having a hard time understanding why this place gets such great reviews? Maybe it's the neighborhood and it's proximity to anything else worth eating? Perhaps we went during the wrong time of the day (dinner time)? At any rate, we came here due to the reviews hoping to find a delicious meal just miles away from where we slave away at our academic chores, and well... that wasn't the case. The first impression was awkward, we walked in, got stared at, then eventually asked if we were going to eat. "No, no, we just came here to see easternly world chinese decore from the 60's." What the hell do you think? We were seated in a seemingly dirty booth, waited probably 10-15 minutes to have our drink orders taken, then another 10 to order food, and by the way we were 1 of 2 tables at the time. I ordered general tsao's. with an egg roll and fried rice and my pal got some chicken wings and... fried rice with some kind of protein. My food was chewy and gristly without any spice at all. The egg roll was cold and soggy, but I was super hungry so I choked it down. My friend had the driest and least flavorful wings i've ever had in my life, he didn't even finish them or the rice. I swear it's like they went out of their way to absorb flavor out of these things or something. To top it off, they only take cash (this was not noted anywhere), and so we had to go to the ATM next door at this super sketchy bar where dudes were playing craps and had pit bulls chilling on the bar top. I swear. And yes I feel like this is valid for my review of this dining establishment because they made it part of the process for us. Anyway, being the honest folk we are, we got the money, endured the $5.00 service charge for seedy ATM use and left to never come back. I've traveled much in China, eaten at most Chinese restaurants in Chicago including Chinatown, & have had food from this restaurant at least once a month for years. The price, quantity, quality is among the best in Chicago. The negative reviews make no sense. Except it happens everywhere on Yelp. Knowledgeable people are all using Trip Advisor because the real negative zero stars goes to Yelp which really sucks. Of course the atmosphere is low end. Went to this restaurant for dinner, was greeted with a straight faced worker with no interest to serve us. We walk in, there was 6 of us and one being a recent graduate of the Navy. We walk in and ask " do we order first" and her response was "are you eating here?" and our response was "yes". She looked at the clock and said "oh we don't serve after 9pm" well it was 8:36pm when we arrived. I feel like she just didn't want to be bothers. I've gotta say I was skeptical of this place as well - pretty meh on the outside, but decided to give it a shot. Their menu has very good prices, and their lunch specials are nice portions with a few sides to choose from, instead of just your standard fried rice & egg roll. Their soups are tasty, and are an option with your lunch as well. I ordered the shrimp lo mein today, and I've gotta say it's probably some of the best I've had. Lots of shrimp and they were seared perfectly with a great flavor, good sauce & vegetables too. I recommend trying it - the place seemed decent inside. I don't understand the negative reviews, although I usually order carry out. They are fast and effective and you get a lot of food for lunch. This place isn't fancy, but either is North Chicago. This is exactly what I expect from a Chinese Restaurant in this neighborhood. It's fast, cheep, and tasty. I often get one of the lunch specials for takeout. I order about 7 at a time for the whole office and no one has yet to complain. For an easy $5.50 you get a choice of a main dish (about 15 different choices) a side of white or fried rice, and choice between soup or and egg roll, and don't forget the fortune cookie. The portions are great, and the service is alway plesent even for takeout. I would recommend it to anyone that's in the area. read more

Stopped in for lunch and the food was pretty run of the mill standard Americanized Chinese food. I have spent quite a bit of time in Hong Kong, Kowloon and Guangzhou and can say with some experience that Hunan Sixth Happiness is Americanized Chinese. That being said the portion size of the lunch special was quite big. The hot and sour soup was pretty bland, but the rest of our meal was good. Worst expericence I've ever had with Chinese food. Keep in mind I do not expect much wowing when it comes of most Chinese places but this was down rugt DISGUSTING. How they can serve this mess is beside me. The 'fried rice' is simply overcooked rice with a weird brown like dye on it. Hospital food probably has more flavor. I also ordered sesame 'chicken' ,I'm honestly not sure what part of the chicken this was but I couldn't even manage past the gristle and chunks of chewy fat in it. They have pretty good lunch and dinner specials and staff is friendly, although English can be a challenge at times. Just moved to Chicago and decided that this would be the first Asian restaurant I would patronize in the midwest. I ordered a orange chicken dinner box to go and my friend ordered a sesame chicken dish to go as well. The dinner/lunch boxes are a pretty good deal since they're extremely cheap and come with your choice of two sides (I got the egg roll and hot and sour soup). The sides were really good and I was expecting the same with my orange chicken. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. The meat looked like it was taken out of a can (in addition to having a weird/metallic taste) and the broccoli had definitely seen better days. I think i'd probably come here again because the food is so cheap, but I definitely wouldn't think of carrying out from this place if I had company over. This place has been here for as long as I can remember. I came back after years to find that the insides have been decorated and made cozier. It really has a home-y feel to the place. You can be the pickiest person about your food so however you want your order to be adjusted, they can do it for you. For example, taking out MSG or having sauce on the side. The lady that works there is super nice. She seems to be the only waiter/waitress there. Be nice and give a tip. For a $6 lunch meal, the portion is really generous and filling and tasty.
