Let's keep this review short: this is the best takeout Chinese food in Lawrence. Sure, it's not Chinatown in NYC/Phila/SF good. I doubt that's possible anywhere nearby. But for the price, you get a metric truckload of food, and it's good quality. I've eaten a lot of the chow mei fun, and it's always terribly tasty. The crab rangoon are by far the best in Lawrence (I believe they use real crab, and the cream cheese is just a bit sweet, which allows for a unique and tasty flavor). I'd probably go here more if it weren't on the other side of town. If you're nearby, give it a go. read more

Ordered take-out at China House for the first time, based on the recommendations of friends. The woman working the counter was rude and took our order while she was on the phone. We left with our order only to find out they didn't include the crab rangoon - however it was marked on our order sheet. We drove back to retrieve our missing crab rangoon and they accused us of circling the item on the order sheet and made us pay for the crab rangoon AGAIN. We won't be returning to China House. I love this place! Okay, so that might be partially based on the fact that it was practically across the street from my apartment, and the fact that I'm obsessed with the containers they serve their food in...they make great tupperware! maybe i eat way too much bad chinese food, but this place really surprised me a good way. this is a small, narrow chinese diner in a west lawrence strip mall with food that seems very fresh and well-prepared. i ordered a lunch special (they run 'til 3:00 PM) that costs $4.95. one gets choice of soup, egg roll, or crab rangoon along with an entree and rice. i ordered, took a seat and waited. i sat near the kitchen and heard as two youngish chinese dudes hit the woks. it probably took 10 minutes before my to-go order came out and the counter person handed me a large plastic dish inside a paper bag inside a plastic bag. oookay. i grabbed some soy sauce, a fork and hit the road. inside the final container of the package i discovered a present. what i found inside with a steaming hot serving of general tsao chicken laid on a few stems of cooked broccoli. no soy sauce needed. the sauce was rich, but wasn't overly sweet. the chicken was well-cooked with a crunchy exterior. the egg roll had a very nicely cooked exterior and tons of fresh, cooked cabbage inside. everything was piping hot. i indulged too much and my stomach isn't happy now, but the stuff was too good and too fresh. again, i'm a sucker for bad chinese like you'll find at a food court and pwns that shit. i shall return. read more

I was skeptical about finding a good Chinese restaurant to eat at in a college town. China house did not disappoint! Their crab Rangoon was amazing, orange chicken and sweet/sour chicken was on point! I wasn't real happy with their steamed dumplings, but the awesome egg drop soup made up for it. The cost of eating there did not break the bank either. Service was fast and friendly and the woman on the phone was easy to understand when she read back my order! It does not look fancy, it is small and small family crew. But you will not find better Chinese food. Combination Plates are great. I had Orange chicken and Sesame chicken combination plates. This includes crab rangoon or egg rolls and pork fried rice. Too much celery in egg rolls so if you don't like celeries just choose crab rangoons. Chicken menus were really great as well!! read more

A mixed review. The place is a shabby hole in the wall with questionable cleanliness. I ordered Kung Pao Beef with black bean sauce, my wife ordered sweet and sour pork. I looked askance at the slimy, cheap beef and was not sure I could eat it. The first few bites were almost bad. After getting down to the sauce it tasted pretty good. My wife's dish took a lot longer to prepare and was okay, not great. I think if I go back I will order vegetarian. The meat is a little hard to stomach. read more

I like this place so much. Wonderful lunch menu , fast service, nice portions nice prices. Love the shrimp and vegetable in black bean sauce, big tender shrimp cooked perfectly in that spicy sauce but my favorite may be the pork and green peppers. That's just yummy. Without a doubt, the best fast food Chinese in Lawrence. Huge selection of dishes. Well-prepared food with quality ingredients and if you get to-go/carry-out (unfortunately, no delivery), even the containers are high-quality. I have also found them to be amenable to modifications to dishes (I can't stand celery in some things and they didn't have any problem leaving it out). My particular favorites are the Hunan Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, the Sa Cha Chicken, and the Hot and Spicy Chicken (without the celery). The various egg foo youngs are also one of my frequent purchases. I have yet to be disappointed with any of the meals I've had from China House. Also, they have "homemade" spicy mustard by request and that stuff'll definitely clear out your sinuses. read more

Ate at this place for the first time last week with my brother. It was okay, but definitely not anything special. I ordered take- out and sat to wait for my meal...it took a while (15-20 minutes) for only 2 meals. When I ordered I made a special point to tell them it was "to go" and they tried to bring the TWO meals out on a tray to me...the ONE person sitting by the door. I then had to tell them again that I wanted it to go and they had to repackage it. Kinda frustrating when you only have a certain amount of time for your lunch break. I wasted well over half of it just sitting in the restaurant. The place was kinda dirty & ugly...I most likely will not be returning here to eat a sit-down meal. However, like one reviewer mentioned...I liked the containers they used. Food was sub-par, prices are very reasonable. Only a little over $11 for 2 people. read more

10 years ago was the first time I went to China House. I suppose I should write a review from my extensive studies. From 2006 on, if you ask where to go for Chinese in Lawrence, it's China house. Or China as we call it. The food is always hot. Always what you ordered since they check it before you leave. On the busy days Peng answers the phones/takes orders. Lunch and dinner combos are the best deal. Entree, rice and choice of Rangoon or egg roll. If you are looking for a fancy place for a special occasion this is not the place. However; if you are looking for consistent hot food made to order almost always in 10 min. This is where you need to go. Eating there is doable if you want, but take out is the way to go. They make the food extra hot most of the time so even on my 20 min drive home it is still scalding when I open it up. I could go on all night. I've literally gone here at least once a week, sometimes twice or more for the last 10 years. And the ONLY bad thing I can think of, in 10 years of consistently eating at China is about 3 years ago they started using smaller squares to make their crab Rangoon which are still the best in town! Come on people. If you want to bash this place due to a bad experience you had once or maybe even twice I respect your opinion but please save it for another restaurant that actually deserves a bad review. China house addicted for the last 10 years, let's see how many more good things I have to say after the next 10!!! read more

It's always pretty quick, the service is as nice as you can except in this type of place, the prices are REALLY cheap, and the food is fairly tasty (this coming from someone who frequents China and likes REAL Chinese food...the thing is, I know I won't get REAL in Lawrence, so I adjust my expectations accordingly). Tried China House this week as I just moved down the street. The prices were extremely reasonable and the amount of food you get was impressive. We tried the General Tsao's chicken, which was delicious and the chicken was plump and moist, and the plain fried rice, which was good but didn't have much flavor and only had onions in it, and the crab Rangoon's, which were wonderful as the shell was light and not too hard and crumbly and the filling was very flavorful.
