Not the most exciting place, the menu sign inside was 1/3 burnt out, but the staff is very friendly and the food is pretty good at a fair price. They didn't have soy sauce, salt, pepper, duck sauce or anything like that out, but when asked they were super nice and brought us different sauces we asked for didnt skimp either. We got the fried Egg Rolls and Chefs Mia Fun I believe it was. I asked for spicy and wasn't disappointed. It was quite good. If it wasn't for the interior I'd give a solid 4 for sure. With that being said, I believe 90 percent of thier business is carry out. Due to location and the customers coming and going plus how long they have been in the same location. Over 20 years. SKIP THIS PLACE! THIS IS THE WORSE Chinese takeout I've ever had. I love Chinese. My husband doesn't like it as much so I don't get it very often. When I do order it I get a couple meals worth. I ordered 4 dinners, 2 egg rolls, and a crab Rangoon. They charged me $76.00. This was way more than what the menu said. Ok fine I thought that's kind of high but I'll just watch what I order next time and I'll go home and check prices and then call them. I called them and asked why I didn't get the egg rolls I was supposed to get with my meal. They say you don't get the egg rolls anymore. Ok? I let it go. I sat down to eat. It was horrible! The chicken was dry and hard. You couldn't chew it period. My husband got sweet and sour shrimp and it was the same. They gave us fried rice when we ordered steamed. The crab Rangoon was the biggest disappointment. It didn't taste anything like what you expect it to taste like and half of them were burned. Don't waste your money or time. So I didn't actually go in - my friend picked up food for us, but I was so pleased I decided to write a review! (Especially since all reviews are so old and negative) I got the vegetables and white rice. Seems simple but you can tell a lot about a restaurant by their veggies. They were obviously fresh, big portions, and idk what sauce they used in the veggies but it was GOOD! Decent portion of white rice as well. I've tried this place about 3x in the last 9yrs I've lived here. Every time a huge disappointment & complete confusion as to how they are still open to the public?! Today's fluke : I was one bite away from putting a piece of sharp metal into my mouth. Also we paid $23!!!! For a lg chicken fried rice, S&s chicken, & rangoon- felt like about 7-9$ more than it should have been, before tasting. My husband can eat about anything if he's hungry enough & he took 3bites before giving up. Freeze dried peas & carrots in my rice, maybe the rice too? No egg. No flavor. Maybe it's premade? READ UPDATE down below:: This place is decent. The inside may seem a bit run down, but majority of local Chinese places are this way. The lady and man is always friendly, sometimes I can't understand her, but she is polite and is very patient. They overload our boxes every time. The young man who works sometimes is exceptional. We have been eating here for over a year and have no real big complaints. Once they forgot our sweet and sour sauce but let me come back and get it. Not sure why this place has such a low rating. UPDATE January 2019: I finally had my first bad experience. I get the take out home and I go to eat my general tso chicken, out of the box, with their plastic silverware. The first few bites were delicious and then I realize I am chewing on a piece of metal??!? I spit it out and I realize it was a piece of utensil used for cooking, like a stringy metal. (I don't have any hardware in my mouth and never had a cavity lol- per what the owner said to me). I call the owners up on the phone and told them about it. I wasn't looking for a refund or free anything. I just wanted to make sure they were AWARE and someone else like a CHILD go through this and happen to swallow a piece! Who knows if there were more pieces of metal...Well the owners gets rude with me and tell me "YOU IS A LIAR" "ITS YOU TEETH NOT MY FOOD" "YOU IS RUDE NEVA CALL AGAIN". I really, really wanted to like China King. Having a quick, cheap Chinese joint within walking distance of my house is a rare thing in Independence, so I was excited about trying out this local option. I went with the rather pedestrian option of sweet and sour pork and crab rangoon for my carryout order. While I generally think it's pretty hard to mess up fried food, my dinner was hard and tasteless. The sweet and sour pork lacked the usual components of carrots, pineapple, onions, etc and the crab rangoon had an odd taste about it. Been going here since they opened. Personally I am not a big fan of Chinese food, but my hubby loves the food here. I don't think he has had one bit of nasty in the several years he's been eating here. Portions are a good size and typical of other Chinese places I have been to. I am the food picker-upper and the owners have always been friendly and smiling. I made a stop along the way back to Lexington from Indiana and I'm glad I came here! I ordered the beef with broccoli and it was amazing. Fresh broccoli, steamed rice, tender beef and delicious black sauce hit the spot after a few hours on the road. Grew up eating from this place. One of my favorite Chinese food places. Always super friendly, reasonably priced, and fast.

I've tried this place several times. It's much improved from a year ago. The portions are better and there is really some meat inside all that dough now. That's the good. The bad is the chicken still has a stale refrigerator taste. The dough or coatings on all of the fried chicken recipes are heavy and chewy. I much prefer the lighter crispier recipes. My egg rolls were very greasy and the grease tasted old. The "General's" chicken was unrecognizable from any other recipes I've ever had. It wasn't that bad it just wasn't the "General's" and the chicken had that refrigerator taste. The sweet and sour sauce tasted of too much vinegar. I'm not sure if they know what Bourbon Chicken is and that it's actually made with real bourbon. I could go on but I think I've given a good overview. I'd really like to "like" this place. I hope they will continue to improve. I know it can be done. My favorite place is "Dynasty" in Florence, KY. I love their food but they're too far away. read more

Horrible food. The General Tzo's Chicken is more like BBQ chicken, however I'm not sure the meat is even chicken. The Mongolian Beef is mushy and rubbery, not edible. We had to throw both meals away. Bad hygiene and the owner was untrustworthy. I started to investigate. I found the restaurant to be unsanitary. I found the food unfit for eating.I got on the horn with the state. There were numerous violations for unsafe food handling and high levels of bacteria. I went around the rear where there was sanitation and maggots. It stunk and I noted a rat. Placed an order to go. It was ready and took food, got in car and started to drive away. The daughter chased us in the parking lot to tell us they accidentally put an extra egg roll in the bag. I have gone to china king in independence 2 times previously, the last time about 2 years ago. Both times the food was terrible. Yesterday I gave them one more shot hoping in two years things turned around. I was seriously mistaken. I really have no idea how they stay in business it really is that bad. Go next door to Kroger buy a frozen chinese meal, take it home and cook it up in about 10 minutes.
