My criteria for takeout isn't the same as when we dine in. I'm also, shall we say "penurious" with takeout. I mention this because if China King was a sit-down restaurant, I'd likely be one-and-done. Based on convenience and reasonable prices, we'll probably return. But know that I'm not enamored. Hot and sour could be dubbed 'hot and watery.' No distinct taste. HOWEVER, I doctored mine up with sauce and ingredients from the other dishes, giving it some punch. They skimp on wontons in the egg drop wonton, but I like that they have wide greasy noodles to throw in. T loves Mongolian beef. His assessment is different than mine -- he grew up with crummy Chinese food in Georgia -- and he considered this good. Eh. There was such an overload of onions. The moo goo gai pan was maybe eh-plus. Not bad. And a week later ..... 1) Wonton soup -- why don't restaurants make soup like they did years ago with slivers of pork, slices of water chestnuts, greens and more taste? This is okay with a few squirts of soy sauce. The wontons are pretty good, and to their credit, plenty of 'em. And as I said last week, I like the bagged crispy noodles China King stocks. 2) Double cooked chicken -- c'mon, this dish is devoid of any zing. It's supposed to be spicy. I often crave Chinese- I'm not very picky- but for years I've avoided this place because of several bad meals. Yesterday I decided to try again- Hot and Sour Soup- Shrimp Egg Foo Young. There were approximately 3 shrimp in it. Chewing the 2nd one I had to spit it out. It was rotten and I've felt nauseous since then. Not particularly friendly- and why does it bother me that they charge 50 cents a portion for both mustard and hot sauce. Very good Chinese takeout food, and a 1st Class business. We always get consistently good food from them. It's fresh, well cooked, and generous with both the protein and the healthy / delicious vegetables. They also care about customer service. If they have a question about a special order (You want that steamed? Sauce on the side? Black bean or the standard sauce?) they call you barely a minute after you put in the order. Delivery is usually faster than promised, and the delivery guy calls first, with Swiss-watch timing. He says "Chinese food is here!" and by the time I extract myself from doom scrolling or nose-picking, and make it to the door, it's always at the precise moment he's bounding out of his car with the bag. At a time when restaurants are struggling to staff up with barely competent workers, China King is kicking ass. They deserve your business (and generous delivery tips). read more

I ate in. It looked clean enough and the 2 women who served me were very nice. The food was average & cheap: "4 choices with soup" for $8." I chose chicken with broccoli, fried fish, eggplant and mushrooms. The tepid soup had no taste at all with scallions and chicken. The eggplant and mushrooms were very greasy. I put duck sauce on the fish for some taste. I left half my food as it wasn't going to taste any better the 2nd time around. You get what you pay for, I guess! read more

This is, I think, standard American Chinese food. It's dependable, it's decent, and it can come via delivery. I will say, they do cook the tofu pretty decently - perhaps a little tough sometimes, but not gooey or mushy. I wish they leaned into spicy flavors more. I stopped in about a month or so ago (haven't had since middle school) and decided to order out. I got the Wonton Soup and Chicken w/Garlic Sauce. Wonton Soup- Standard, it was good. In my opinion this particular appetizer cannot be messed up. Chicken w/Garlic Sauce- It was a disappointment, the portion was great but the taste was not there at all. It was very bland and the dish didn't seem to have the 'garlic' aroma to it. Very average food, not piping hot. My first time trying this chinese takeout and I will likely try a different place next time instead. I called in my order and the woman answering the phone was very hard to understand. I placed my order for beef and broccoli with white rice...quart...$10. They will only take credit cards for orders over $15. This is strictly a take out place; there is no where to sit and eat. My pick up was very transactional. The first bite of my food tasted a bit spicy and there was one piece of vegetable included that shouldn't have been....just seemed to me that they don't do a thorough job of cleaning pans between dishes. My beef and broccoli was average. Wasn't as hot as I would've liked and when I took seconds, I heated up my plate. I love having a place close by, but am often disappointed. The good: the hot and sour was very hot and sour. The people are very nice. The online order was done ahead of time. The bad: the seaweed salad was a very small amount; less half of the small plastic container was full. Plain and simple. This is easily my favorite takeout place. Hands down. No frills at all. A new favorite is the Fried Wonton in Szechuan Sauce. Old time favorite is the General Tso Chicken. Pretty standard Chinese takeout. I like their pork fried rice and boneless spare ribs. I usually get the Mu Shu Pork; however, one time they forgot the sauce that goes into the dish itself (as opposed to the black bean sauce) so I had to toss it in the trash. I've been eating from China King for the past 25 years. It's consistently good, not amazing, just good. The one thing I love about them is how they package their food when you place a large order. Went back, they said they remade it, but when I went back home a second time, I found they had just thrown it back in the pan and gave it back. The food at China King isn't as bad as Dara says it is, although she is right that it's pretty standard Chinese food. They have the usual offerings - lunch specials, lo mein, egg foo young, moo goo gai pan, etc. They also have a good selection of vegetarian options and "dieter's" options (no salt, sugar, etc. and the food is steamed). They also have Peking duck and crispy duck, which is a plus in my book because I like duck dishes. The staff is friendly, and the wait for food is very short. Inside, the store is pretty much like many other Chinese restaurants around the city - takeout is obviously their bread-and-butter, so their eat-in tables are minimal, the store itself is small, and you've got your basic counter with pictures of the various food offerings on a board over the counter. China King is certainly not on the caliber of restaurants in Chinatown, but I think the food is decent. It's also the only Chinese restaurant in Narberth. read more

My fiance and I moved to Penn Valley a few days ago. Having minimal dinner options at home and after fighting the Schuylkill traffic, neither one of us felt like going to the store or to a restaurant. The best option was delivery. I never have high expectations of take-out/delivery food. My only compliant is that the delivery took 2 hours, but I have to say, they gave me an accurate estimate of time. Don't get me wrong, I was hangry, but at least they warned me up front. As far as the actual food goes, I have to say that I am very impressed. I ordered General Tso's Chicken and Vegetable Fried Rice, Beef and Broccoli, and Wonton Soup. All dishes were delicious and and still HOT when delivered. The silence during dinner tells me that my fiance enjoyed his meal as well. The fact that the food was still hot when delivered is very impressive. The amount of food provided is very generous and will feed me for at least another two meals. We will be ordering from them again! read more

This is basic fast food style chinese food. The only that separates it from all of those fast food places you see lining Broad Street is that it's in the suburbs. Otherwise, same kind of thing- gloopy sauces, boring menu, over cooked dumplings, salty soup. The reason they received two stars? Vegetarian options that are edible and they deliver. The staff is adequate. If you're in a hurry and not too picky, this is your spot. Otherwise, skip it. I started working in Narberth in October and the girl who was training me claimed to usually dislike Chinese but strongly endorsed this place as clean and the food as fresh and minimally greasy. I'm usually pretty iffy on Chinese but I decided to give this place a shot and I have to say that they won me over. They have a lot of veggie options for a suburban take-out joint (many of which are very good, I especially love the Sesame Tofu) and I'll also go ahead and verify my co-worker's claim that the food is noticeably less greasy than most Chinese and add that I think their sauces (scheuzan, general tso's, etc) are also somehow less "goopy". Since I'm usually in Narb during the day, I get their soup for lunch a lot. I love that they have vegetarian wonton and I also really like the bean curd soup ...it's so good if you add egg drop. read more

This looks like your typical hole in the wall Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, but in downtown Narberth. Let me preface this by saying that I love the Empress Garden in Chinatown Philly (funny thing is that a friend who lived in Taiwan told me about Empress Garden unprompted - and I told him it was my favorite place in Chinatown) Anyway, back to the China King. As I walked in I was greeted by a very friendly lady and she was patient with me as I scanned the many options. We were in the middle of a move and had nowhere to cook so I thought we'd give this a try. Decided to go with some typical fare: 2 orders of dumplings Orange Chicken Pad Thai Beef & Green Bean something or other. Everyone thought the food was great. Kids loved the dumplings and Orange Chicken Adults loved the Pad Thai and Beef and Green Beans. All in all was great! In a town with very, very few edible vegetarian options China King is a stand out. The General Tso Tofu is yummy, the soups in general are pretty good. They would deliver in a hurricane always with a smile. The chef is an amazing whistler! Go in to hear this guy whistle out complicated Chinese opera in a way that you can feel his wistfulness of China, as if he was thinking, "I wish I was in my homeland rather than next to this greasy wok slinging moo goo gai pan to indulgent Americans." I used to live in Narberth before I moved here to San Francisco and the only thing I miss from there is this restaurant! They have the most amazing pizza rolls!! I used to order 10 at a time.
