Tasting mine, it was definitely sweet and sour. When the waitress came around I asked if that dish was really Kung pao chicken and she assured me it was. I said the sauce was sweet and the chicken was deep-fried and was unlike any Kung pan chicken I'd ever had. She told me she would trade it out, although I was unsure what she was going to replace it with, since she had insisted that what I had received truly was Kung pao chicken. She returned a few minutes later and said the chef had made a mistake and was making the correct dish for me. It came out and was fine. But what bothered me is the server just assumed she had brought me the proper dish to begin with. If she had simply looked at it and agreed it looked nearly identical to Kristy's sweet and sour dish, she would have easily concluded a mistake had been made. Which I would have understood. Instead, she didn't believe my explanation of why it was the wrong dish. If I was the chef in the kitchen, I would have brought the corrected dish out to the customer myself and apologized personally. He took the easy way out by putting it on his waitress. This is a restaurant we love and have spoken to the owner before. We will go there again, but this was a very disappointing experience.

The good: China Palace is the best I have found for Chinese so far in Idaho. I would go back to place an order to go, which is what several others were there doing when we went for lunch. Went for a late lunch at 3 PM. The Broccoli chicken lunch special was good. The Sweet & Sour Pork lunch special was also good. The side order of Fried Rice (with ham, chicken, etc.) was very good - home run. Prices are very reasonable, and portions are very good. Easy to find off State in strip mall on the south side. Ample parking. We were told that the restaurant has been around for over 10 years. Surprisingly clean for a Chinese restaurant. The bad: I took a star off for dirty tables. We were told to sit anywhere, and we wanted a booth. Two booths were open...but wait...they had newspapers, pitchers, dishes stacked up, etc. We were there for 45 minutes, and no one cleaned those booths, despite there being no new customers. I think the owner sits and reads in one of them when it isn't busy, which is understandable. I also took a star off because our server (the only one working) was nice, but very cranky, and battling a cold or something. Several other customers who we talked to warned us that their was a different chef when we went. They seemed unhappy with their order. The owner seemed to rush out of the back of restaurant each time our server pushed the buttons on the cash register and opened the till. I saw this happen 3 times, and was quite strange. In summary, I still believe this is the best Chinese I've had in Idaho state. Give them a try, and see what you think. I would hope that there is some way that the community of Emmett could band together to help save this establishment unless the current management is happy with the current state of affairs.
