Driven past Chef Wang for nearly a decade and finally decided to give it a try! Called in an order for pickup during my last trip down to Tucson and waited for several minutes while my food was being completed (which meant my order was hot and fresh), so got a preview of what dining in would be like. Service was attentive and everyone inside was incredibly kind and respectful. Ordered Crab Rangoons and Beef Chow Fun, a couple of staples of mine trying new Chinese restaurants. Rangoons were perfectly crispy, while the chow fun had a delicious wok hei flavor. The noodles and beef were tender and the dish had plenty of onions/green onions/etc. The only thing I didn't care for - and this is a personal preference - is that the chow fun did have a little more star anise/five spice flavor than I care for. Otherwise, the food was hot, fresh, and delicious! Definitely looking forward to returning for a dine in visit to try out the full, very authentic looking menu. read more

Such a great spot for authentic North-Eastern Chinese food as well as some other Chinese regional varieties like Sichuan. I love their tofu pot with cabbage, the cold appetizer combo with wood ear mushroom salad and Chinese shredded potato salad, the málà (má: numbing, là : spicy) vegetarian plate and the tea mushroom pot. I definitely want to try more! My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I had an interesting experience. The food was great the first time with a friend. The very next day I ordered take out and it fell drastically in quality. I can recommend dine in. Although service was lacking and not attentive. We got the spicy crunchy shrimp, the crab puffs and the pork pot. Shrimp was amazing and deliciously spicy. The next day for take out it was overcooked and rubbery. The crab rangoons dining in were also fantastic. I was mind blown. For takeout they were undercooked. Lastly the grilled pork pot for dine in was just okay. I would lot order again. Flavor lacks and pork could have been softer. Presentation is beautiful tho. We also got Xiao Long Bao, broth filled dumplings, which were overcooked and busted so we didn't get to enjoy the soup inside. I kept looking around town to see which places I would like to try but this is just a simple choice. The pork belly was fatty and tasty. Wonton was okay. Finally a Chinese restaurant that makes real Chinese food in Tucson that's not some poor altered Americanized version. I've seen so many reviews for other restaurants where people claim the food is authentic sometimes when it's a dish that was made in America and doesn't even exist in China. The staff here are very friendly. The food is very good with it being cooked and served very close to the real deal. I've spent a lot of time in China and live in NYC near Flushing, the epicenter of real authentic mainland Chinese food, where we eat weekly so I can discern what's authentic and what's not. Be adventurous and try things you haven't had before. I'll use their dish names so not to confuse anyone. We've had the spicy diced chicken, Szechuan boiled fish, spicy pork feet, cumin lamb, eggplant with string beans and beef chow fun. Let me clarify my rating. I'm giving it five stars because they blow away all other Chinese food I've had in and around southern Arizona. This place has an amazing variety of Chinese dishes, from the very traditional, to the Americanized. There's some spicy dishes that will knock your wig off, and there's some with no heat at all. Very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes here in this Sichuan restaurant!! Definitely recommend the spicy boiled fish fillet, came steaming hot and the cabbage bean sprout layers were well cooked! Probably burned the roof of my mouth a couple of times but very good. The meatball and mung bean thread soup was also good, savory but not overly heavy. The host lady also recommended a pickled bamboo shoot and pork dish that was also perfectly cooked- tender, addictive flavor from the shoots. It was a nice change in palate from a few days worth of southwestern food. Good variety in their menu: Peppery flavorful dishes plus milder more homey flavor fishes if you need something lighter. Indoor/exterior decor was noticeably new/updated - love their custom ceiling lights made to look like Chinese liquor barrels. Felt very much like a clean modern restaurant plucked straight from Norcal- cooking was as good if not better than a lot of the restaurants in South Bay. Service was also very nice and efficient! We ordered Chicken Chow Fun and Spicy Pork Wontons. Delicious. A lot of flavor; smokey stir fried noodles with plenty of chicken, green onions, and bean sprouts. The wontons were very tasty, I like that they added a hint of vinegar in the chili oil. Tsingtao beer to drink, and it was nice & cold. Phoebe was our server, she was so lovely! One of the best unique Chinese menus I've spied with many options in the "Untried" category, I started my exploration with $14.98 Sauced Pork served with tofu skins. This on a Tuesday evening before a Taj Mahal concert at the Fox Theatre, when several, closer in, local restaurants were closed. What a surprise as I've tried most forms of tofu, including the stinky kind in China, but not a chewy tofu skin the size of a won ton wrapper, that is used to wrap the pork & green onions just like a taco or peking duck pancake. It's chewy, almost rubber band-like and doesn't easily break up as you chew, but I liked it enough because it was so different. The dark sauced pork has an almost licorice flavor and thinly sliced, the pork is also somewhat chewy as are the long fibrous strands of green onion. More surprising was how much my husband liked this dish, normally eschewing anything soy based (except for soy sauce his fave), he ate two skins and kept forking his way through the saucy pork too :D He requested a House version--chicken-beef-shrimp--of their chow fun and waiter didn't flinch, no problem. $14.98 too, it was a large dish but the noodles & veggies were a bit overcooked, mushing together and not separating as per norm. Still had good wok hei flavor and asking for some chili crisp, topped the dish nicely and still enjoyable. Saw the Kirin tap but was not available, and with only Bud Light on draft for $6.98, we opted to share a Lucky Buddha 12oz $4.50 which has a crisp light finish like most Asian beers but less lingering vegetal or grainy flavor than Kirin which hubby prefers. LuckyB also comes in a beautiful glass Buddha belly so we kept it to home a not-yet-purchased lucky bamboo shoot! Dining room has a cool modern vibe, asian lanterns that look like ceramic pots on ropes dangle from a dark ceiling, highlighting wood and metal chairs with red vinyl cushions and booths, an impressive wall of white grey marble backs the service area with a cold appetizer bar, also something I've never seen in a Chinese restaurant - price varies $10.98 small I think. If Chef Wang has a million fans then I am one of them. If Chef Wang has one fan then it is me. If Chef Wang has no fans, then I am dead. Have not been let down by a single dish here. I am still a diehard fan of the spicy pot and pork & bamboo stirfry, but the mapo tofu and low mein are also . Idk what they're putting in their food but I am addicted and often crave this place. Also the lucky Buddha is deliciously crisp and the bottle is adorable. The leftovers we get from such incredibly affordable prices are always delicious. I hate places that say "spicy" but it's like tomato sauce. No this place means spicy and it's always the perfect amount of genuine heat there tingles and enhances all the flavors. Hell, even the water tastes good after the numbing oil. Friendly staff, fast service. Every single time. Doesn't matter if they're completely packed or not. The service is always fast because they're prepared and equipped for a crowd and mean business. I wish I could single handedly give them all the good reviews to take them up to a high rating but alas I am one person. So I have taken all my local and visiting friends as well as coworkers and neighbors here. Maybe eventually we can flood the love. I will not stop taking people here until they can break through the well deserved 4-5 star range that they DESERVE. I did an analysis on the "bad reviews" and I see a lot of them are going for and complaining about the American Chinese dishes. My response to that is, my guy... you're at a Chinese restaurant, get REAL Chinese food. There is Chinese on the walls, on the TV, and on the menu. This place specializes in Sichuan Chinese food in the chengdu style. And it's REALLY so so good. My fave Chinese food can be found in NYC and Chef Wang is right up there. I can usually tell how good a place will be based off menu and lighting. Both of these were on point. The menu is beautiful!!! It's like a magazine. Menu creation is a dying art. As well as lighting. Also when 80% of the guests are Chinese people speaking in their native tongue.... That's a good sign. We ordered the beef and scallion dish, thin noodles and custard buns. WOW- really fresh, great flavors. It's the kind of Chinese food that doesn't make you feel gross after. Two hungry people can definitely demolish a single platter, no left overs over here which might make this place a little more pricey than other spots. But the quality is great. Custard buns had an intensely real vanilla flavor to them. Another cool feature is they offer 5+ Chinese teas!! That's very rare to find and super traditional/special of them to offer. Along with a few others, such as Jun Dynasty, Chef Wang seems to be one of the most recommended Chinese restaurants in Tucson. Redditors, the Tucson Foodie, all rate it highly. I can see why. Chef Wang has the sort of Chinese menu I think works best in terms of business sustainability: the full suite of 'Americanized' dishes for the less adventurous along with an array of more traditional dishes. It's the latter I look for, although I enjoy American Chinese as well. - water-boiled spicy fish: one of my favorite Szechuan foods, the name here seems to imply a watery dish. It isn't - it's what you expect if you've had boiled fish elsewhere. Large chunks of a white fish cooked in a spicy broth with some non-dominant vegetables. You'll get a moderate dose of the 'hot and numbing' sensation from the Szechuan peppercorns. This entree comes out in a huge bowl - enough to feed four. - fried spicy tofu: also excellent. The tofu is well-prepared and served on a bed of cooked cabbage. Comes out in a hot pot. - fried green beans and salty fried cabbage: our side dishes, both tasty. Another interesting Chinese restaurant in Tucson. The restaurant itself is in a repurposed building that obviously housed a totally different restaurant concept and is clean and reasonably modern. Our server was friendly and had some difficulties with English (always a good sign in an ethnic restaurant) but got our order right and the food arrived after an appropriate period of time. While they have many "traditional" Chinese-American dishes, there are also many dishes that you won't find in most other Chinese restaurants in the US. All three of our dishes on this visit (steamed dumplings, MaPo Tofu and Grilled Lamb Pot) were very good and we would recommend them without reservation. Grilled Eggplant with Potato 4/5 Best to consume immediately upon serving. The high-heat cooking from a wok makes the vegetables dance on the plate. Texture is intact with bursting flavors on every bite. Will not be good if you consume it cooled Shrimp Walnut 3/5 Not salty enough (shrimp tastes plain), coated mayo sauce is too sweet, not enough walnuts. House Fried Rice 2/5 Plain fried rice, nothing special, and can't experience the wok heat. Doesn't taste fresh either. Grilled Pot Pork Ribs 2/5 Meats are dry and there is not enough seasoning. Fried Croaker 1/5 DO NOT ORDER THIS. For $30, you can get two inappropriately prepped fish that provides a dinner-long pungent taste. Meat is dry, sauce is just plain sweet and bland. Overall, an excellent authentic Chinese restaurants that offers a variety of dishes. Despite half of the dishes that I rated on this review are not the best, I have tried many others in the past years that are amazing.
